Hey, great to know the Barrage is still finding good homes. It is a solid first rig. There's not too much I would change about the original video except to soften up the suspension, as mentioned in my follow-up kzread.info/dash/bejne/im13yZOHqsa7c9I.html. Also, those aluminum spools are in finally back in stock at this time, but my plastic one is hanging in there. Hi I got some aluminum steering knuckles and bent the rod Like yours and the turning improvement is awesome thanks again. End points for the servo settings on my radio controller went from 44% to 71% real happy

I've had my eye on those knuckles, as well. Glad to hear they're worthwhile. Doesn't take much, and improving the turning radius just a little (shaving off those stop-wedges for example) sure makes a difference. Cheers.

Right on! I'm still running a plastic spool in the back. When I switched to those little tires (and now Element 1.5 tires) I stopped ruining those spools. Cheers eh and thanks. Gonna check your video.

Thanks, David. Buying accessories (like the new 3d printed ones) is a great way to spruce up your rig, and i highly recommend it. But, no one seems to mind that I made many of my own out of leftover junk and re-purposed material--yet another reason RC is a hobby worth pursuing.

Such a good little rig. Mine is still going strong, though I am on my second motor having burned up the first -- I didn't exactly take care of it. Lately I've been pitting the Barrage against my SCX10ii and guess who wins! Okay, the Axial wins every time, but not by as much as you would think :-)

Some good news. Back when the Barrage came out and we were looking for different pinion options you couldn't find one if your life depended on it. Now I notice on Amain there's dozens to choose from in the less than 3mm shaft size. I assume it has to do with the proliferation of 1/24 and other mini crawlers. Couild be time to try gearing down the Barrage again, since one knock against it is that it has always been geared too high.

Thanks for this video and keeping things up-to-date; it was the first video I came across about a week ago after finding my Barrage for $90 CDN on Facebook Marketplace; I've just bent the steering rod and replaced the steering servo, I got a brand name one in a blue casing but similar to the red amazon ones; just from my local hobby shop. I also disassembled the diffs and transfer case; gave them a coating of grease, along with lubricating all the linkages as I went. - I'm curious if you could recommend things I could do to the stock shocks to make the rig bounce a little less and articulate fully now that I've made space in the front for the servo to travel, the only thing stopping it seems to be the shocks, I've yet to disassemble one and measure the springs; but I'm thinking lighter weight oil along with some softer rate springs? Apparently the stock shocks aren't even filled all the way from factory, but if you have any educated guesses on the weight that was in the originals; I'm all ears. - I was considering just tracking down the ones you swapped to in the video; but considering the price and your comments after the fact; I figure I may try and just get the stock ones to behave closer to what I want, I plan to upgrade to a more common platform eventually; but I'd like to get this truck totally in a state it can be a spare I can trust to bring along for friends. - Love all your body mods; thanks again for keeping things up to date; creator activity on older videos is probably what helped your video always pop up near first anytime I'm searching for anything related to this truck. - Cheers, and happy trails.

Sorry for the slow response. Not sure why I'm only finding your comment now?? Sounds like you're doing everything right. As for bounce, physics is physics and light rigs will always float less realistically than heavier ones. The best hardbody scalers come in at around ten or twelve pounds! Something you might try with the stock shocks is 15wt Losi shock oil instead of what is probably 30wt. Cheers and keep us posted on your Barrage journey!

Hi, Nick. There are some very good threads on RCCrawler.com where guys have done just what you need to do. Number one, you need a stronger steering servo for crawling enjoyment in the tricky stuff. I strongly suggest you take it easy with aggressive wheel/tire spinning to avoid damaging the spools front and back. Plastic replacement "connect boxes" are easy to find (and will also fail), but at this date the aluminum versions are out of stock. And with a stripped diff (okay, not a diff) you can't drive. Next I would say invest in some squishier crawler type tires (not expensive) and you are good to go. Oh, and don't forget to oil all the moving parts, but not the splined sleeve and slip where the shafts interlock. Keep that dry.

You had me HOOKED at "TRAXX-ASS" (which I've been saying for Years).... But I HAD to Sub, after finding out you came from Model Railroadin'!!! I started in 1975, in HO, then N, then G (1:22.5), then back to HO, tried 3Rail O27 "High-Rail", G again (1:29), On30 (which is STILL a favorite)...... And then back to HO, where I'm currently stalled at.... ONE thing that had never changed since 1975 - my Freelance Railroad - the Pacific Belt RR. Always been, always will be!! Life changed for the worst, and I'm stuck in an Apartment. SUCKS for Model Railroading, but great for revisiting RC, which I've been around since 1985... I Dropped out of RC around 2003..... I was Racing for Team OFNA, and the weekends became so stressful, uptight and cutthroat - that to me, STOPPED being a Hobby.... That was also when I came up with TRAXX-ASS!! It was Because they just JACKED UP the prices of Short Course Trucks, with the introduction to the Slash.... Crawlers and Scalers dragged me back in - in 2016! THIS is what I always wanted from this Hobby. 🍺🍺👍👍 And TRAXX-ASS struck again - with the TRX-4. 😥😫😬😬 Prices are ALREADY going UP on the others, since it's release!! 😫 As a Disabled Veteran, I already have a hard time with Hobbies. I currently only have ONE good Rig. An Axial Wraith - only because it was a Gift from Wounded Warriors.... I have a CC-01 Landfreeder, which I STILL try to make crawl - it won't. I'd LOVE to get an ECX Barrage - the new 1.55" Scaler Version. Can't afford one, but one never knows. Sorry for the Life Story!! TRAXX-ASS just got me going! Carmine 💥 ⛽

I sure do have this rig, and it was a lot of fun to build, modify, and drive. I haven't driven it much since building the bigger meaner SCX10ii, but when I do I am reminded how capable the little thing is. That said, I would only recommend buying one if you can get a really great price (say $US 129.00 nib), as there's a raft of other new crawlers out there at prices better than ever. Hey I loved this video! I am having a hard time trying to buy metal bumpers for my truck. Any suggestions? I've been looking at Injora metal bumper made for 1/10 Trax 4 but I don't know if this will fit? Any help direction would be appreciated.

I really like what you did. I have a new RGT 136100 it is essentially the gen1 barrage. I will be modding it . Any links you can provide to a good new servo, good new wheels/tires, new smaller front and rear bumper. so I can purchase all of that would be great. I found that the servo that is installed is super weak and hits the cross member so I need a shorter servo with high torque, or I will need to push it out a bit. The steering radius is terrible. How did you fix it? again any links to purchase these items would be great and maybe a single video showing each item to make this a great crawler and what you did to address it. Thanks so much!

@@amw4736 That's the best looking body shell of all for this platform. The place to get answers is a forum called RCCrawler.com. There's a thread there called the Barrage Bible run by HillBillyRC and this guy knows EVERYTHING about where to get parts. If you have seen my other Barrage videos you know that I am very happy with the Associated 1.5 tires and rims, which you should be able to get for next to nothing just by asking around, since everybody with a Trailwalker or Trailrunner just throws them away. The radius can be improved by bending the tie-rod as shown in this video, so it sorta clears the pumpkin. Beyond buying all new axles (which I do not recommend) you can dial in more radius with a DX5C transmitter or the like, so you can set separate servo end points. The ideal servo for this rig is the Savöx .15/208 Waterproof Standard Digital Servo. Or you can go with an Amazon 20kg like in the video at half the price, but it won't last as long. Finally, watch the video again. The details are all there including part numbers on screen. Cheers, thanks and happy trails.

I answered this to an earlier question about bending the tie rod: I put one end in the vice and slipped a pipe over the other end and pulled. Then I traced the modified tie rod onto paper with a pencil. Then I bent the other end, checking it against the pencil outline to make sure I had a perfect match at both ends.

Just ordered the 20 kg power servo the blue one should fit correct cause the red one is hard to find and I got a better deal on the blue one

The trailer is done! kzread.info/dash/bejne/fp2rmM2qgMirdKQ.html. It had a pair of stock Barrage Falkens for a while, but the no-name tires, which have gone hard like plastic begged to go on the trailer -- all four crappy otherwise useless tires. So, note the spare tire on the back.

@@NaturallyRC um, I only know of associated cr12 or something like that that is similar size and price. It seems like the chassis of barrage is better, but associated has nicer body? I don't want to spend for trx4 or sc10 because I don't know if I'll stick with it. I want crawler truck because I want something slow for backyard to have fun with with my 2 year old daughter. Looks like local hobby shop has the barrage gen2 rtr for us$180, might be a father's day gift to myself. Thanks again, enjoyed your vids, will have to watch more.

@@joeh773 See if you can get the local guy to shave off a few bucks or throw in one or two 2S LiPo batteries and charger. If you do take it home, dial it back, eh. Listen to the motor. When a tire gets stuck, or the front wheels won't straighten, reach down with your hand. Don't gun it and try to blast out of gnarly situations. That's how you break things, and nobody wants that. If you drive it like the F150 you rely on to get to work on Monday, it should last and last.

I haven't really looked into it yet, but care to recommend lipo batteries and charger for this, please? I don't want the cheapest stuff, but again, not sure I'll stick with it. Inexpensive quality would be good. Or I'll just get second nimh battery for now...

Nice GEN 2, I have a GEN 1 RTR version and the big design flaw was having the shocks mounted inside the frame rails which can interfere with a upgraded servo in not careful. I will say that the I noticed a change in the design on the GEN 1 kit version as far as placement is concerned. I swapped in a set on old SCX10 stock axles and which allowed me to mount the shocks the the outside. Also went with a droop HR shock set. As wheels I am using some small Flash Points on some old SSD raw steel beadlocks. Added a Sumo body from PL, and Scaler fab front bumper. My biggest gripe about the GEN 1 was the non locking wheel adapters... be very mindful the 12mm hex drive pin falls out easy. You can use the stock rock sliders from an SCX10 on the Barrage just have to drill a new hole. Their cheap but I opted for the RPM rock sliders just for the design. Looking forward to more.

I too have a Gen1. The stock 1.9 tires look really nice but pretty useless for any kind of crawling, and way too big (out of scale.) I put some 1.9 beadlocks on it and replaced the stock 110mm tires with smaller diameter 96mm ones with nice mud grip tread. And put 5/8ths ounce weight on each wheel which lowered the center of gravity and really helps the Gen1 problem of rolling on it's side if you sneeze on it. The smaller tires also allowed me to lower the body all the way down with no tire rub, looks better, and lowers the center of gravity. -- I lost one of my wheel adapter pins and for a quick fix cut a piece of a spare body clip and stuck in there. -- I got some Wertymade sliders for it, but not overly happy with them. Since I lowered the body the sliders are higher than the bottom of the body, so kind of useless. I picked up a set of SCX10 sliders but haven't mounted them yet. -- I cut a piece of the lid from a small disposable food storage thing I got at walmart to make a sort of half depth interior, and painted it black. Mostly because it's a pet peeve to be able to see wires and stuff when looking through the windows, and to see light up through the windows when filming from low angles. I just tape it in with black duct tape which allows me to easily open it to switch drivers or to stick an action cam in there for some cab view video. No driver in a scale vehicle is another pet peeve that goes back to the late 1950's when I was racing 1:24th scale slot cars, if you had a viewable cockpit they wouldn't let our cars on the track without a driver in it. I kept the stock 110mm tires because they give a really smooth ride. I sometimes mount a wearable 3-axis gimbal in the bed of the truck and don't want a "bumpy" ride from the mud meats I normally have on it. Since I have no one to play R/C's with to drive the camera truck for me I just use the throttle trim on the controller to make the truck creep along real slow while I drive other R/C's past it and video them. -- I bought a small cable cam setup that I should be getting sometime next month, so that will give me another way of getting some cool video of my trucks. (I have no videos on youtube, I deleted them all in 2017 because I was tired of getting 2 or 3 scam music copyright claims on every video.)

@@DFDuck55 Great information, especially on video. When you said "I cut a piece from a thing I got at Walmart" I knew we were kindred spirits. Funny, however, I have no plans to ever do an interior or driver. I prefer lexan bodies where you can peek in and see the robot guts. Which is weird because I used to sculpt, cast and sell highly detailed figures for the 7/8 scale train fraternity, and my rolling stock was detailed to the extreme. I carve my own pilots, too, and would never fly open cockpit without one--that's just wrong. Ha.

NaturallyRC: Part of my love of scale realism is also from model trains. When I was a kid in the late 1950's and 60's my dad had a large HO train layout. For Christmas and dads birthday my brother and I would make buildings from balsa wood for him. And when out in the woods we would collect bags of Spanish Moss to make bushes and trees with. My brother and I also built 1:24th scale model cars then set up set up scenes that I would photograph with a b/w 110 film camera. The scenes were often based around drag racing, using fiberglass angel hair for tire smoke, and UFO's flying by in the background which was a pretty popular theme back in those days. We also built model airplanes but they usually didn't last long on the shelf, we would take them outside and blow them up with firecrackers :>

Thanks for the compliment, DK. My apologies--I should have said bike "sprocket" (cassette) cleaner, and it came free with some chemical bike solvent I bought ages ago at the MEC. Wish I could be more help, but it was in my junk collection waiting for the day I might need it for some such application, and I can't find it online anymore. Basically, it was flat plastic with lots of holes. I had to look past the colour to visualize it, since it was bright orange. Sorry I can't be more help, but you're on the right track. Nothing against buying ready-made bits for a scale rig, but finding / making your own has a certain satisfaction. In another video some guy had taken an old cox 049 finned cylinder and used it an air cleaner. I had to say, yeah.

The tires...A word of warning...like the Barrage they're small, and cheap for good reason. But they do get the job done on a 3-pound crawler. Larger trucks, I don't know. They say the height is 108mm but 105 is more like it. Also, they stink. You need to leave them outside for three days. Proline etc rubber gets better, softer as it wears-in, while these have stayed hard(ish) and shiny. The plastic rims are also not up there with metal beadlocks, to be sure. But for 26 CDN I'm not complaining. I would like to try them with softer foams, or no foams at all, but with glue-on rims you really only get one shot. Thanks for watching and subscribing.

Thanks. I'm happy with my decision. Cheap way for me to try out the hobby and see if I like it. Since then I have bought a more expensive and capable rig. Lots more options to choose from these days. So, look around. Make sure you get a good deal.

​ @Mike Ashbaugh contacted me recently about a problem with axles bending. To him and others in the same situation: I'm stumped, because it sounds like you are doing everything right. Also, I have never bent an axle and can't imagine under what circumstances that would happen. I suggest you ask a guy who knows everything about the Barrage. He goes by the name of HillyBillyRC and you can find him at RCCrawler.com. He has a thread there called the Barrage Bible. The contributors to it have done mods far beyond anything I have ever tried. Good luck and kindly keep us posted.

Important Reminder: If one wheel gets wedged relative to the one at the other end of the axle DON'T STEP ON THE GAS. You will strip the "connect box" and be out of commission. Trust me. Plastic replacements are available but not the aluminum version at the time of this post. I will try to keep everyone up to date. UPDATE : Aluminum spools were briefly available online in America 10/27/2018. But not anymore. 6:08

I left a detailed answer at RCCrawler.com for you, I think. Note that I did not like the 18T pinion and went back to the 22. Couldn't tell the difference. I bought it on Amazon. Important that you choose 7041 or equivalent because you need that small diameter shaft.

Im interested in the ecx barrage gen2 and since im in the west with wet conditions so what upgrades should i do?

The Gen 2 is waterproof right out of the box and will stay happy as long as you remember to oil ALL the roller bearings with a very lightweight lube after every wet excursion. I prefer 3 in 1 or sewing machine oil. You should also squeeze the water out of the foams. The Barrage Gen 2 is a fine little rig, but make sure you haggle a low low price, because today there are new and better rigs for only slightly more than I paid back in the day. No complaints -- it's a good thing.

I have questions on the tie rod. Which one did you use to get more angle? I know you said you bent it but did you bend the stock one or get a different one?

Stock one. It's lengthy enough to be bent twice and still be long enough. I put one end in the vice and slipped a pipe over the other end and pulled. Then I traced that section onto paper with a pencil. Then I bent the other end, checking it against the pencil outline to make sure I had a perfect match at both ends. OCD or what? LOL.

What size wheels and tires? Also, what is the rim material made out of? I found what appears to be a similar tire on Amazon with a black plastic rim and 108mm Tires and another set with 96mm tires... Not sure which size to go with.

Do you think the 98mm will be too small? Luckily they were Prime so I may be able to return them.

I think those tires are going to be just fine. 98mm in 1/12 scale is around a metre high. In the real world that’s tall for any truck outside Gravedigger. In other words, those skins will be more scale than the next guy. And I think you'll like the traction. Sharp sidewalls come in handy on side slopes. Black "steely" rims too, for a military/construction vehicle look.

One minor error spotted in post--the body is drilled too far BACK making it sit forward too much, as stated correctly.

Also, I'm waving my finger in front of the Robinson Racing pinion because the hole diameter is 2mm too large for the stock motor shaft. Even if a bushing were added, the gears would not mesh anyway, without some shaving of the transmission housing, as the pinion diameter is quite small. Most of the mesh adjustment is used up with the stock pinion, as it is.

@@NaturallyRC It likely has a .175" shaft, like Tamiya 380 Motors have, instead of 1/8", like nearly ALL 540 and 550 Motors do. If I can get one, I might try a Redcat 390 Motor... Little longer and more Torque than a 370, same mounting holes, and a 1/8" shaft, that fits 98% of the Pinions available. 😉 Carmine 💥 ⛽

Yes, the tie rod, not the drag link. This is one mod that worked out very well. Remember to bend it just a little, and try to be even on both sides. I did one side first, traced it on paper, then did the other one to match.

Can you only go for the 78mm suspension or could a guy put some 100mm suspension under?

Good question. I'll pull a shock off my scx10ii and see. Experience tells me the fatness of the spring will complicate installation and decrease the available turning radius up front. Plus, the driveline angles will become extreme to the point of causing premature u-joint failure.

I can confirm that 90mm shocks will fit, with some tinkering, and if you don't fill them full up with oil. Can't say about 100mm shocks, but my guess is, that would be pushing it. Don't be fooled. At 1/12 scale, the entire rig is small, compared to your average Axial etc.

So u still running stock gear but the part that's plastic in your video for the drive the one that broke and left yeah 3wd mind telling me that part too.

We're talking about the big gear inside the pumpkin, or differential housing, sometimes called the locker, right? I stripped the rear one, bought an aluminum replacement (680010 Connect Box with three screws holding it together) but installed it up front, moving the still good plastic one to the rear. This set up has not failed so far, because I also switched to smaller tires. FACT - The rig is simply not meant to drive huge tires. Other owners with two aluminum lockers and big heavy wheels have snapped axles! I would rather run scale equipment and live with the tiny truck's limitations. Cheers.

Turns out I also call a certain model company “dumb ass boats”, when I have nothing against either brand. FYI RCG, you’re one reason I kept my dog in the video, when he wandered into the shot.

Ok so I upgraded the servo matches yours but I need more travel on the front shocks can you send me a link or email on how to fix that I dont want to cut out the battery tray or remove the cross brace that blocks it

Are you sure you need more travel? It's important to remember that for crawling, rather than racing. you don't need travel when pressing down on the hood. You only need articulation (one wheel up while the other is down) and the Barrage has lots. Trust me, my SCX10ii is set up this way and it's a goat. Try and decide for yourself.

Again, about 1.5 cm is plenty. I ordered my shocks from Amain or Amazon, as I recall. Looks like both vendors have stock. Hot Racing 78mm Temper Internal Spring Air Shock (Blue) (2)

About servos. I put one of those cheap red "20" servos in my Axial rig, too, where there used to be an a Savox that would fill up with creek water and short-out. In fairness, Savox never said it was water proof (at three times the price).

If you mean the middle part, Ronan, it was just orange plastic with evenly spaced holes that came attached to some bike solvent, I think. It was in my junk collection for ages, where i save interesting odds and ends for a rainy day kitbash. If you mean the round headlights, that's covered here (8:30) They're separate from the perforated plastic, but work together to make up what I consider a funkier looking nose than your average Barrage.

Found that servo on amazon. ca. It's on amazon.com too. 20kg 180 degrees: ANNIMOS Digital High Torque Servo 20KG Full Metal Gear Waterproof for RC Model DIY,180°: The servo horn that comes with that servo is nice, but too long. You will need a shorter one, like maybe the one in the kit, or an aluminum upgrade.

Yup. Thing about the Barrage...it's a mishmash of existing parts put together by Horizon. And there's no aftermarket support for the Barrage. You have to find parts for other vehicles that work. Part of the fun. kzread.info/dash/bejne/im13yZOHqsa7c9I.html

Here is a link. However! They're not good tires in the long run. The rubber has become hard like plastic. Also, they stunk up the house when they first arrived. I would leave them outside for a week if I could do it over again. But mostly I would look elsewhere for tires. Thanks for asking. No, the CR12 has nothing in common with this truck. The CR is from Associated whereas the Barrage (and its ugly sister, the Doomsday) is from Horizon via ECX, and can also be found the world over with minor variations under different names, such as the RGT Rock Cruiser/Bowler and FTX Outback. Somehow, Redcat is involved since some of their parts are interchangeable. The CR12 has a wheelbase of about 9 inches and the Barrage around ten. Cheers...
