ECX Barrage Gen 2 First Look & Review

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video I take a first look at the Horizon ECX Barrage Gen 2! This is a fun little 12th scale truck with some nice details and hardware. My thanks to Horizon for providing three trucks to the SBG for a very cool project!
Follow along on the forum with the three of us as we take these stock RTR's and create amazing custom trucks out of them!

The barrage gen 2 is how I got into crawling. I have 2 of them now, and I love them. They have their shortcomings, but they have been a great way for me to learn and get experience with what's important on a crawler.

I've had an interest in this truck for so long as the build it yourself rendition. It was "upgraded" with great little things like outside framework mounted shocks. It all so had wheel extenders. Now it seems they have taken the cool ass little build it yourself "upgrades", and actually built it themselves.

I ran the proline sumo body with a two tone copper and black. Little accessories from my trx defender. Running the stock rims wrapped with pitbull berserker’s. The provided pitbull foams are perfect for this weight. I also flipped the rear bumper upside down. Also had some rc4wd rock sliders laying around. Great video as always.

Matt... You know I'm already following all three!! 😉 As far as a comparison with the Associated rebrand.... In my too long in the Hobby opinion - there's NO comparison!! If asked by a N00B, or someone getting a Rig for their Kid.... *Hands Down* I would easily choose the Barrage II. Much more, for less! Less to have to buy, just to keep up with friends. The smaller Pumpkins (over the first Barrage) little torquier Motor, the 1.55" Wheels (!!!!), and the more robust Suspension, makes this a HIT!! 👏👏👏😎 I do apologize Matt... Really. I'm trying not to feel jealous. You and a few others spend a LOT of your time and talents, bettering the Community, and sharing often... Making GOOD Modelers out of average ones! You DESERVE any accolades and Perks that people and Companies are willing to give. I'm literally becoming Bitter in my older years. I have LESS than nothing, but I'm expected to be grateful for it. I LOVE this Hobby! I have since 1984. Lately, I can't afford *anything* - yet I'm expected to be happy about it. God FORBID I should ask anyone for help! I got treated like a child, and have been Banned from 2 Forums that I REALLY liked. One I've been a Member of, for over 15 years! Doesn't seem to matter. Someone needs help, I've always HELPED them! Not berate them, and leave them to suffer.... (I am absolutely NOT saying that YOU did or said anything to me like that) I Proudly Served my Country. I was seriously injured in Kuwait, soon after the cease fire in Desert Storm. My own Government gives me just enough to be POOR. I generally haven't asked for much in my lifetime. Breaking even would be pretty special. RC has always been my mental outlet. It's what I do, to feel better. I don't get even the smallest nuggets of happiness anymore.... And I'm not even going into my Wife's Cancer, which I've already mentioned to you. Right now, I'd Give whatever body Parts that still works on me, for ANY Rig that I can build, modify, or both. The early SCX10, a SCX10 II, even Broken.... I would be Honored to even get a Gen 2 Barrage, just to see what I can do with it... I do have SOME spare parts, hardware and sheet Styrene. None of that is going to happen. If I'm supposed to be happy about it, so be it. It's just that I'm not. That's the hand I was dealt. I'm drinking tonight, which I shouldn't be, but someone Did give me some booze! Matt, you're a good Man! Appreciate your Blessings, accolades and gifts. You truly deserve it! Just don't take any of it for granted.... You never know what life is going to do. Now, I'm expecting something pretty spectacular from you and the others. It's what you do, well. Me, I'll wake up tomorrow. Cheers Friend, Carmine 💥 ⛽

I had a Gen1 and the biggest drawback was the inboard shocks. I made outboard shock conversion kits that worked really good but eventually, the amount of plastic elsewhere held it back. I have plans on getting a Gen2 and reviving my Pajero G6 rig with all the parts I got for the Gen1.

  • @Krisly_Bear

I enjoy my Gen2 Suzuki Samurai, good challenge to try and get it places that other rigs will go easily. Being so light can be helpful, allows it to get wheel speed up on loose surfaces. Sadly axles and now lockers aren't the strongest. Running FTX rear axles. Looks forward to seeing what you 3 create.

I have a Barrage Gen1. Though I don't know where to buy the Gen2, they don't actually sell it on the Horizon Hobby web site but just link to stores that sell it. And it came up with no stores within the couple hundred mile search I did. The Gen2 fixed most all the problem we had with the Gen1. They've moved the shock towers to the outside of the chassis instead of inside, which gives better stability and allows for a full size steering servo instead of the short servo the Gen1 uses. I tried a chassis mount servo for awhile, after the stock servo that came with the Gen1 "caught on fire!" (made for a cool video though.) Problem I had with that was turning sharp to the left the servo pulls the axle up toward the chassis and an cause you to roll if you're sideways on a hill when the whole front-left of your truck dips down. -- They replaced the weird 3-link on the rear with a 4-link. -- They replaced the 1.9 wheels and tires that looked out of proportion and rubbed to 1.5's. I still have 1.9's on mine but got some smaller diameter 96mm tires that work pretty nice. -- The transmission is 2 speed, not 3. And to tell you the truth I've never tried the high gear, I like crawling not bashing. -- In my opinion the Barrage body is about the ugliest truck body out there. As you pointed out it really doesn't look like anything... sort of like a Jeep? Sort of like a Toyota? And has next to no detail to it. I added door handles, windshield wipers, and mirrors and that helped. It really is ugly though. I've been wanting to cut the bed off and build a wooden stake side flatbed for it. -- I've seen complaints about the small 320 motor but to be honest after owning the Gen1 nearly a year I really have no complaints with the motor. It seems to have plenty torque for crawling, and I don't care about speed. And it's very smooth at low RPM. If this one ever burns out I'll probably just drop another 320 in it.

My mistake, I misunderstood. And I was just recently eyeballing a budget trail RC truck that does have a 3-speed transmission; 4x4 in low gear, 2-wheel drive in the two higher gears. I thought that was kind of unique. Looking forward to see what you do with your Barrage. It really is a nice chassis to work with, sort of a clone of the SCX10 chassis. I've been hoping to find a hard body truck cab to fit on it, and been pondering trying to make a wooden stake side flatbed for it (using popsicle or coffee stir sticks.)

Nice info I have had 2 Gen 1 barrages and 1/24th barrage I really liked them. But now I have the barrage doomsday Gen 2 all scaled out and I love it! The Gen 2 is so much better then the original! The only thing that really sucks they still have the cvd pins that pop out and plastic lockers that strip very easy! But so far ecx aka horizon hobby refuses to make a metal replacement of the locker spools!!!metal diff gears don't matter if your stripping plastic lockers 😡 Now my buddy has a cr12! It keeps up with my barrage and even out does it here and there do to its size lol. But he beats on he cr12 daily and it's had 0 issues so far and still running strong!

Why leave the MST CMX out of the comparison? Same scale and roughly the same price, but has much better looking axles. I've abused mine for a couple of years and the quality is excellent..in any case, i enjoyed the review, and look forward to seeing what you create.

My son got the build kit version of this last year for Christmas my only complaint about this truck is that they use plastic on the diff gears where the axels connect to them and they strip out very easily. Hopefully they fixed this issue and are using all metal diffs now. Let us know if you open the front and and rear axles. Thanks

I think it's a good idea to have big wheels, a short wheelbase, be lighter, but they are not wide and the tires of origin are not versatile I think its price is very good but I'm afraid of being limited because of its size!
