Many Magic The Gathering Players ask the question, Is it worth it to buy a Kaladesh Planeswalker Deck? Brand new with Kaladesh, Planeswalker Decks have replaced the disappointing duds that were Intro Packs. But are these powerful planeswalkers the ultimate upgrade, or just sadly some of the same with only a new name? Let’s find out!

    Some people want to play with planeswalkers in their decks without having to spend +$10 on a single card. Like you said, if they printed good pws in these then prices would skyrocket, so they are made purposely bad for constructed play. The decks have a clear theme (vehicles and energy), some synergy, and a planeswalker, and I think that appeals to a lot of people. Not everyone is crazy into Modern or EDH, or know about which cards will hold value or not. Some people just want to sit down and *spoiler* have a fun relaxed game of mtg every once in a while.

    I agree entirely! I have about 4000 pokemon cards and I have maybe 6000 on the Pokemon Online TCG. I am just starting to learn MTG. To me these are like theme decks from Pokemon. They are built to go against each other. These are not made for anyone that plays friday night magic. My girlfriend and I play against each other in theme decks all the time since she doesn't want to build decks. Her interest is solely in playing equally built decks. She doesn't care if they aren't good in "standard" or "unlimited" format in Pokemon. We just started playing Blessed vs Cursed decks and she loves it. Those decks are super generic but we just shuffle them up and play. Got it for 15 bucks and we keep playing them over and over. These products aren't made for the "real" Magic player. I will never buy a Pokemon theme deck and use it at a tournament. It is just common sense.

    right... but the deck can be good and still accomplish that goal. that's why he brought up battle decks, because they're exactly what these are trying to be. i agree with you about the planeswalkers, but beyond that i cant understand how this has any appeal over a battle deck

    ericofire because they are diverse, which is exactly the opposite from most constructed decks that usually only have 10 or 11 different cards in them (which is what the prof wants). the decks serve as an introduction to the game and display many different effects that the color combinations can have. it doesn't matter if some effects are suboptimal for whatever the deck's main strategy is, they give you a sense of the flavor of the colors.

    idk man, i've been teaching new players the game at my own expense for 10 years, and i've found that having a variety of different cohesive decks to pic from trumps having a few decks that try to be multiple decks in one. i'm not talking about suboptimal effects, sometimes that is necessary to keep things balanced. i'm talking about consistency. if these are supposed to be a teaching tool, then consistency is FAR more important than diversity. you can argue against that till you're blue in the face, but that is just a raw fact of teaching. and not just for mtg. just like with the commander decks, if new players had an arsenal of starter decks to pick from, then they would get that diversity you are talking about. but having a red deck that sometimes works like a fast red deck, and sometimes works like a midrange black deck is just going to confuse new players, and slow their progression.

I basically threw myself into through Pauper, and much of my learning experience with the format has been getting measurably wrecked by decks I didn't know existed and didn't know how to side against. I have yet to do a single true home brew, which is what drew me to the format in the first place. If I were actually part of an IRL playground, these intro decks would have been a way better foot in the door for me.

    Najarala they were designed for that purpose. To fetishize walkers to new players. They are designed to revolve around the walkers and implant that idea they are necessary in new their heads. I despise this direction for MTG. We all know they want you to chase Chandra/Nissa from the packs as your standard legal one will get curb stomped in comparison to the pack ones. Folks are just now seeing this? I have been saying this since the day they dropped their new product article describing these messes.

    So usually I wouldn't pay for these but my local store here in South Africa (woohoo #teamunseen) has a great plan). You buy an Planeswalker deck and play with the deck as it is out of the box. Each week you pay R100 ($7.39) for entry, (except the first week) this covers your normal event entry of R35 ($2.59) and gets you a booster for R65 ($4.80). The contents of the booster that you buy is recorded and you may augment the deck with cards from the booster only. (Except week one where you may use the 2 boosters from the Planeswalker Deck box) This happens for 4 weeks, normal prizes, but the winner of the league gets free entry into games day! I am a new player (since gatewatch) and never do well at making a deck or even at a standard fnm and so this seems like a great idea for new players to not only learn how to play the game but also learn how to modify or even build decks better. Plus everybody will be on the same level week one and will give players like me the chance to learn more.

    As a relatively new player (2.5 years), I must disagree on two points. 1. Lack of multiple copies of cards. As a new player, I wanted to play everything. Even a playset feels too boring. I want to play all of the cards! I would much rather get to experience a variety of cards, and have different game play each time, than a more consistent deck. 2. Mostly commons. As a new player, the common/uncommon/rare/mythic designations meant nothing to me. I wanted cards that had lovely art and interesting flavor text. I drafted tons of commons because I thought they were neat. (And then would construct a deck with just one or two, because again, I wanted to play all the cards.) I grabbed a Chandra and Nissa deck over the weekend at pre-release, but haven't opened them yet. I can't tell you if these decks are good or bad, better or worse than intro decks. As a still pretty new player, I don't know all the ins and outs of the various business models and trends. I do remember being grateful for the Theros (and other) intro decks, though, to help me get into the game! I like drafting, but it was so intimidating! I admire the Professor's passion and love for MtG, but when immersed in the topic for so long, it's easy to forget what it's like to be new, and what new players might be interested in. Regardless, thank you for the video -- even if I disagree, I still enjoy watching!

    I think people view these products from the wrong angle. From a standard players perspective, I like them, and here's why: Standard itself gives me customization and competition. Duel decks, into packs, and now these planeswalker packs, are a neat way to just kill a few hours and get a game in with little to no preparation. I never bust these decks up. I like having them to just play and get the feel of the plane. You can upgrade them if you like, usually for cheap, and go back to tarkir or theros or wherever you like. It's about fun and feel, not power and value with these types of decks. I'll admit, I would like to see them focus more on balance of play with products like these, ESPECIALLY in the case of duel decks. I'm all for seeing them have more playable cards included or cool reprints, but these products are more like buying a board game. I like them that way. Some of my favorite play experiences are from duel decks. Knights vs Dragons, Jace vs Chandra, Ajani vs Nicol Bolas, Heroes vs Monsters... Anytime, anywhere, let's do it. Making these a great playable experience should be the primary goal. I would love to design duel decks based on magic lore, or see others homebrew duel decks! Planeswalker packs, as long as balanced, could be similarly playable. I miss clash packs for this reason. Wizards could give out planeswalkers as fnm promos if their value gets too high. They could have an unlimited printing policy on planeswalker decks, or simply begin to include the cards in the set. There are ways to solve that problem if indeed they climb in value. And as far as the one or two of copies in a deck, that keeps the experience varied. You might always have a three drop on turn three, but it might not be the best one. The casual game doesn't have to have the same board state every game. Limited is fun because games aren't pushed like that. I think these products should be looked at from a different perspective than money or standard playability. I probably didn't communicate in the best way everything I love about preconstucted products, but I hope you get the gist of what I'm saying. Thanks for keeping the honest content coming. Love the idea of battle decks. Never would have heard of them if it weren't for you. We appreciate all you do!

    The problem is with these decks new players have no real viable way to get into standard or have a decent deck for FNM at a reasonable cost. I'd actually go back and play standard again if there was a pre-con that was reasonably decent and upgradeable. It obviously doesn't have to be PT caliber but I'd like a reasonable chance at FNMs.

Keep track of how you won the game or more importantly how you lost. Remember magic is better balanced now than in the past.

    WhoniverseReview on the flip side, and I'm not disagreeing with you as I do see that point.... Might as well teach new players decks that have "Focus" which are decks with play sets of 3 and mostly 4 cards. After all, this is what most decks try to become. Focused, synergies! But yes, I can remember liking decks with all kinds of different cards, it was fun to see the cards in action. And two decks alike are great for really new players. But fairly soon, new players need to start getting focused synergy to their decks if you want to be even a little competitive.

    I don't think I agree with that. An introduction to the game and a learning experience should be effective at what they do. You can't learn through variety, they are ideas that are inherently at odds. I think trying to make a deck with a variety of cards is simply a wrong headed idea because it will only lesson the value of learning to play with those cards. This is a bad idea because such a product is trying to be two incompatible things, a good learning experience and a complete experience. This is just fighting entropy. Will a player really learn to understand the value of haste if their haste creatures only show up randomly and inconsistently? I think these decks suffer from keyword and mechanic overload, they are too complicated. I remember in the past there was a very clever Magic intro deck thing that had a super simple base deck with only french vanilla creatures and some simple spells, then it came with an additional pack of cards, not a booster pack but preselected cards. These cards were meant to be added to make a complete deck and included things like artifacts and activated and triggered abilities. I think this modular idea has a lot more merit than just shoving against the the complexity wall and hoping you magically make something complete, yet beginner, simple, yet varied, round, yet square. My suggestion would be a basic 40 card deck that is easy for beginners to learn and comes with 2 or 3 expansions packs that can be used to upgrade it into different decks. The Chandra deck could be a basic R/W deck with nothing very interesting and then it could have one pack that adds what you need to make an aggressive vehicle deck and one package that makes it more of a reach based burn deck. The Nissa deck could be split between energy tempo and straight ramp. This way you can cheat complexity by providing multiply products in one. Each deck runs more smoothly than the current Planeswalker decks because it doesn't have as much chafe from the other strategy. I got totally off topic talking about product ideas though. Not only do I think the idea of providing a diverse experience just isn't a good one. I do think you've hit on a lot of the reasoning but it's just so random. Why is skyswirl harrier in the deck? Why only 1 of each pilot? Pilots are fun! Why would you only put 4 in the deck? Because the new player must learn how to play with Trusty Companion? really, is that relevant? Wouldn't the deck be more fun with more pilots instead of Trusty Companion? What it actually seems like is that there's a small sample of anything fun, but only 1 or 2 of them, then if a player finds that piloting vehicles is fun and they want more pilots they're encouraged to buy more packs. Yeah that's kind of cynical but why else would the most fun cards be represented only a tiny bit more than Trusty Companion? To benefit the .005% of players that like Trusty Companion more than piloting vehicles? No sir it's because if the vehicle player has playable pilots (which by the way are worth nothing anyway) instead of Trusty Companions they will have to buy that many fewer packs to get them.

  • @WhoniverseReview

    True, but there are also ways to allow focus while also having variety by having similar cards instead of having the same card. For instance, 2x Shock and 2x Searing Spear. With a rules card mention that you're allowed up to 4-of, people can buy boosters if they want that fine tuning. On the other hand, single copies in an intro deck are a terrible idea if they're not legendary.

  • @dyrnwynski

    @dyrnwynski

    7 жыл бұрын

    I agree in principle. I think these decks and ones before often fail at this in practice. The cards need to be really comparable for something like that to make sense. For instance in the Chandra deck I don't find anything wrong with the inclusion of Fateful Showdown alongside the common burn spell, it's a different take and it's a little more situational and techy. But on the other hand there is no real justification for some of the other splits in the same deck. Skyswirl Harrier should just not be in the deck, it's not good and it has no synergy with any of the strategies. It provides nothing of value to the play experience. These "filler" cards are what make me suspicious as they don't really do anything but make the deck less effective.

    But the experience isn't magic. The first problem is, you give a beginner their first experience with magic with something that isn't anything close to an actual deck for any format. So they enter the game filled with misconceptions about what constitutes a deck of magic cards. Then, when they work this out, they also realise the deck has no financial value - so they wasted their money. Finally, and by far the most important - these decks can ONLY play against themselves. ANY standard deck, heck any kitchen table deck, will take these decks to the cleaners. How will you improve or learn anything playing a deck that never wins, except that the game of MTG is unfair for new players. Even the old idea of upgrading this deck into a standard playable deck is laughable. You'd start by throwing the entire deck away. The new player who buys this deck will quickly realise that the "game changing planeswalker" as you put it, the best card in the deck, is completely unplayable and worthless in a real game.

And the unique cards that you will not get anywhere else. Honestly, I'd say it's a pretty good deal. I think this assumes that every player will end up competitive, and that consistent experience is the best way to learn. I would contend that the variance in play adds to the experience, and allows a new player to decide which cards are good/bad/fun and invites them to swap them out for playsets of different cards. I started with the Elspeth side of EvsT duel decks and ended up refining it over years into a mono-white soldiers tribal that finishes with Armored Ascension. Had the decks been super consistent, I wouldn't have had the opportunity to change it as I grew as a player. Also, competitive decks are relative to the meta power level, but also often include more complex strategies that may not be able to be tailored to new players. Unless they're all burn or aggro.

    Thanks for your help Profesor, this video really helped me, as my Standard deck rotated and I hoped this could be an starting point to build a new one, but I figured I had to change almost all the deck either way. Maybe I'll attempt to do what I did in Khans, build a deck from my Pre-release pool and upgrade it overtime, as I'm in a budget I just can't buy all the singles at ones. I really hope one day WoTC would do for standard what is does for Commander for example: Complete playable decks with not too much value but enough to compete in your local game store... Thanks you again, you basically saved me some bucks! keep the good work

  • @Tedurbin202

    @Tedurbin202

    7 жыл бұрын

    Anders Kjøllesdal Hansen I said I hate the obviously underpowered cards that wizards prints, and that's ONE reason why I don't play standard anymore. I never said standard was underpowered. Gideon is one of the few good cards that exists from the ass stain that was the BFZ block. It's why he's one of the only few cards that is still worth anything that doesn't have the word expedition tied to it. The new Innistrad block was a lot better than BFZ, but compare it to the old Innistrad block. Many of the cards that exist now are underpowered versions that existed back then. And before you come back at me with the "standard was busted back then" argument, keep in mind that nothing from that block was flat out banned during its entire standard rotation. My main point is, just because a handful of modern playable cards come out of a few sets, doesn't mean the sets themselves are powerful. Standard will be as powerful as wizards lets it be, whether you're playing with mostly good, powerful cards that come out of the set that aren't just good in standard but other formats as well, or you're playing with a pile of jank that will be mostly worthless garbage in a year with a small amount of exceptions. If it makes you feel better though, Kaladesh is looking pretty promising so far.

    The rares mention the cards by name, while the uncommons only care for subtype.The wording is slight but there, it keys off of how all planeswalkers of the same person mechanically share a subtype to support the Planeswalker rule. Here is the Text for Chandra's Uncommon: "As long as you control a Chandra planeswalker, Renegade Firebrand has +1/+0 and has First Strike." The rare however says: "Liberating Combustion deals 6 damage to target creature. You may search your library and/or graveyard for a card named Chandra, Pyrogenius, reveal it, and put it into your hand. If you search your library this way, shuffle it."

    There are many excellent points in this video. I purchased one of each of these and thought a lot about each card. I ended up buying four of each, and one of my most effective decks is a blue-green energy deck based on Nissa, with multiple win conditions (and with only 14 lands!). The most common resolution so far has been getting an Aethersquall Ancient out around turn 6 or 7 with high energy production each turn, creating a board wipe with 6 flying damage until game over.

    I also sort of like it a little bit. I pulled a good Nissa at Pre-Release, and if I can get more of the decent energy-based green and blue cards, in theory, I could make a half-decent deck out of it. Also, unpopular opinion here, but I actually want these plainswalkers, but not for 60-card or competitive play, I want them for Commander. I have a Leovold deck that wants the under-powered Nissa as well as the nice foil Ob Nix from the dual deck, and a budget Narset deck that could probably make some use out of Chandra, if I didn't put her in my Aurelia the Warleader deck. (Although, admittedly, Nissa is better, and I can make more use of her)

    So, when I started playing about two years ago, I bought an intro deck, because they were $10 at my LGS for a little bit. I learned how to play with this intro deck, and went to the LGS again, sat down to play a couple games with random people there. Got creamed game in and game out. I didn't understand what was happening, I thought my deck was so good. Then some people showed me some cards, which were in standard, that I had no clue about. It was as if they were play a completely different game. I felt like I wasted my money (which I certainly did) and I almost quit right there. Luckily, I persevered and turned my shitty intro deck into a standard deck that had rotated out the previous year. It was cheap, and super fun for casual play! I feel like they should do this, print semi-standard legal, but totally playable casual decks, with the inclusion of some relevant cards for either standard, or better yet, modern.

    Exactly. I mean I thought that's what the Intro packs prior to the 2 new decks were meant to be, Introductions into the game itself. They weren't meant to be full on netdecks, or rogue builds, if they were they would have been more expensive than just $15. So no offense TCC...sorry I'm not typing out the entire thing and I don't know your name...but not everything can be the typical complete netdecks and rogue builds you seem to think they need to be. Even the "Free Decks" you mention almost every other video aren't that great to learn from and most LGS's don't carry them. Now these new decks are meant for new players as it is, not for established players like yourself or any other Meta Dork and Elitist that do nothing but complain about most of the new products that pop up.

    I bought a tezzeret master of metal deck from aether revolt and i like it quite much, because it is so centered on artifacts that when you eventually get tezzeret out you can defend him quite good. his +1 abillity gets you some more artifacts and at the point that i play tezzeret i can basically play said artifact immediatly because im already swimming in mana and many cards have improvise so you don't even need the mana. If you can get him to 9 and for me that is pretty fast, you can basically nuke the other persons bord and get those creatures at your side that you can attack and win the game.

  • @stolenova1210
    @stolenova12107 жыл бұрын

    I disagree with the review of these decks. I grabbed the Nissa one @ Prerelease just to check it out. Personally, I was very impressed with the improvement compared to the Intro packs. The fact that you wanna complain that Wizards was upfront about this specific product being inferior compared to the product received in packs, is kinda petty. They basically said that these decks target the same audience that the intro decks do. When speaking of value, your numbers are off too. You didn't take into account that for the fact that your getting 2x Booster packs on top of the exclusive cards and to purposely try to omit or downgrade the fact that the exclusive cards are included is misleading to that target audience. Overall, the decks are a great value (with great trade value) for any new player looking to get into the game on the ground floor. Lastly, I'd like to respond to your complaint that Wizards should make a competitive deck that can be FNM ready upon opening. This goes against the idea of the creativity of deck building and would essentially be a slap to the face of the existing user base that has put the hard work and dedication into making their own deck within a competitive environment. Let me also mention that if wizards did offer a competitive pre constructed deck, it would likely cost far more that a $15 price point with likely no pack included. So, as I understand this concern, it doesn't take into account the financial repercussions that doing something like that would entail.

    probably because what is inside those boosters means nothing for the product. Whether his specific boosters were complete duds or filled with foil inventions, it means nothing when evaluating the contents of the product for the rest of us. That being said, I also agree with Charles. If the product costed like 5 euro or something, it would so be worth it for new players to get some cards and play with.

    The packs don't matter in this evaluation because the contents are random. Someone might open a masterpiece and someone else might just open straight bulk. The odds of you opening something that's meaningful to the deck is pretty low. Your analogy is flawed because you know what else is inside your constructed deck that plays Etherium Sculptor and Metalworker. You don't know what's inside the 2 boosters you get with your planeswalker deck. Including the boosters in the evaluation is like the professor giving these decks an A just because he opened one of the swords in his packs. It's an evaluation that isn't going to reflect your experience with the deck because most people who buy this aren't going to open a masterpiece.

    I agree wholeheartedly about the decks, and honestly it's killing me to see such a great concept as Planeswalkers be given the intro pack treatment. However, I actually think that Renegade Firebrand has a chance of seeing some play. Chandra, ToD is likely going to be played in a huge variety of decks, and while I'd never consider playing Pyrogenius anywhere, that card curves from the Renegade and means you can hit for a pretty sizable 6 on turn 4, discounting all.your other R/W aggressive creatures.

    I'm extremely appalled by this review. Especially with the mention of buying the battle deck instead of this. Here are some things you missed: - people actually like planeswalker and that will get people through the door to try magic. Yes, they will get destroyed by other standard players. But your battle deck would be as well. If not "sorry your deck is not legal, you cannot play". So in this respect battle decks are worse - this is an intro product, you cannot have 4 copies of every card, that's what the booster is for, you play a few games, and realize what card is good, what card is bad. Open the booster and replace the bad cards with 3rd and 4th copies of the good cards. This is not a con, it's a pro. - this deck has much more value than MSRP as of the filming of the video, the value alone should give it a C or B, think of duel decks with good value. Completely trumping battle decks. - the planeswalkers are bad for standard and modern and legacy, yes. But commander and cube players would love them. They are foil and only obtainable in this set for good value. I can see casual players buy this product for the planeswalkers and packs. And donate the rest of the cards. - this product has so much more value than battle packs yet the rating is so abysmal. I feel the sponsorship made this review biased due to the monetary gain from the referral code. TLDR: Every magic player is going to buy packs. Would you pay 9.99 for draft chaff (battle deck) or ($14-$8=$6) for draft chaff plus a foil planeswalker? Both decks will get creamed in standard. Both decks decks are underpowered. Both decks can be improved by boosters(though some battle decks may not be improvable by standard boosters, aka enchantments). Both decks will have card synergies. Planeswalker decks has unique cards not found elsewhere. Planeswalker deck fails. Battle deck gets B+. Bias much? I don't mean to shoot down potential buyers for battle deck from the Prof, but there is no value in that product. I don't think planeswalker decks are amazing but it's better than battle decks. I really wish the prof did not endorse that product. My second thumb down video from all of TCC videos. Sad day.

    The professor's review of the battle decks is consistent with his past opinions, though, and so is this. Your argument, for lack of a better word, is all over the place. Focus on a relevant point you want to make then back it up with a logical argument; you cannot just proclaim something to be an advantage when it isn't. Your arguments: -new players like planeswalkers and will get them playing(HOW do they even know what a plansewalker is? they're brand new players - no face validity, invalid argument). -having an incomplete deck is good because you can complete it with the 2 booster packs(unlikely, weak argument - you can replace cards with a good, consistent deck just the same). -this deck has more value financially, though the cards of value are unfit for use for any serious players and the prices will drop off in short order as per past trends(weak argument). -the cards are good for other formats(invalid argument, that's not who this product is designed for). -comparing value of this product to a separate product for a separate market(invalid argument). The battle decks serve a purpose some people are interested in, these decks do not, for the reasons the Professor already laid out; which you have dismissed based on some rhetoric and the notion they must be rooted in a bias from the professor based on sponsorship. If you want to debate the professor's grades you watch the videos again, pick out the professor's supporting arguments, then explain why they don't have merit - THEN people can debate with you.

  • @Starfury117

    @Starfury117

    The argument is all over the place because both the planeswalker decks and the battle decks are an inferior product with problems everywhere. Arguments: - New players want to have cool things, why do you think planeswalker are so popular? Planeswalkers are cool, people dig them, thats an appeal. Battle deck has nothing special. It has only junk which cardkingdom can't sell, hence they built a deck with them and try to sell them to people. Smart on their end, but as a consumer, this is a terrible purchase. Planeswalker decks come with a learn to play mtg guide. Does battle deck come with one? Prof didn't mention it, so I doubt it. So you first point is already counter-intuitive. You don't buy a product if it doesn't teach you how to play. Yes, planeswalkers might be confusing to play, but atleast the product comes with a guide on how to play. - The decks are incomplete and require 2 boosters to upgrade. Yes that is true. But a weak deck or not, it offers a starting place for some new players to start out. You can't take either the planeswalker decks or a battle deck to friday night magic. You will either get tromped or be told your deck is illegal. Neither decks are competitive right out of the box. However, unlike battle decks, planeswalker decks are much easier to improve. They simply need to replace the "bad" cards with the 3rd and 4th copy of "good" cards. This is definitely a pro versus battle decks. New players will have trouble determining power levels of new cards, being able to follow an outline set up by wizards will help new players ease into the game. Battle decks just give you a deck, no instructions, and no guidance for improvement (everything is already a 4 of). Now that is an unfriendly product to new players. - Financial value. Wow you didn't even both to elaborate on this point... Its true, you cannot argue that the financial value is there because money talks. While the value will go down over time as people buy them and sell those cards. It should be mentioned that the planeswalker in the deck is EXCLUSIVE to the product. Therefore this product will ALWAYS have value. Unlike battle decks where there is absolute NO value. Long story short, planeswalker decks have unique cards not found elsewhere while battle decks can be built from any collection and not worth money. - Other formats. I disagree. Have you heard of the archetype superfriends? he truth is, over many years, planeswalker has been very popular (hence the inclusion of this product). There are decks built just with planeswalkers instead of creatures. Casual players adore planeswalkers. While these planeswalker won't see standard play, it will definitely make their way into kitchen table magic decks and cube and edh decks everywhere. This product definitely has an audience. Again, unlike battle decks which will make NO ONE excited. Its just draft chaff. Atleast battle decks can still be played by kitchen table magic players. - Comparing value to a separate product for a separate market? Sorry this made no sense to me. I will try to interpret that as "Planeswalker decks' audience is different for battle deck and hence saying planeswalker decks are more financially valuable than battle deck is an invalid argument". Who are battle decks for? - Casual kitchen table players (formatless) - Not interested in competitive format - Sit down with preconstructed deck - Cheap (9.99) Who are planeswalker decks for? - Casual kitchen table players (formatless) - Not interested in competitive format - Sit down with preconstructed deck - Cheap (14 - 8 = $6), just sell the boosters for $3-4 a piece if you really don't want them - EDH, Cube players - Possibly people who want to buy, sell parts for money (if you are early enough, cause prices will fall, all preorder prices are too high) - Collectors (for exclusive foil planeswalker) So tell me where is the different of market? Neither products will get you anywhere else in magic except a starting point. Both decks cost similar if you remove the booster packs. But one deck has a cool foil planeswalker card which looks nothing like the others and greatly adored by the general audience. You decide. Wow. for a person who said I lacked support for my argument, it seems someone didn't even bothered to do any research before posting... Even after I wrote the comment saying TO DO RESEARCH before posting... Internet is full of people I guess. Feel free to comment back. From a scientific logical standpoint, I still consider battle decks to be a complete scam and detest the notion that someone as fair as the prof is endorsing it. I know money speaks.. but damn... I am not the only one who says this. Maybe the most vocal one. YOU should take a look at some comments in the battle deck video. Then come back. Please, don't waste my time. Hope this has been an informative session. Cheers.

Rather than streamlining your argument you just wrote a bunch more to try and validate your original, unfocused argument; 122 lines it says, and you're talking about people wasting your time. So what would you recommend for a returning player who understands all the nuances of mtg, has deck building experience (even if not amazing e.g. My game store only has standard and I rarely won, but most of my cards came from a deck builders tool kit/ fat pack) but doesn't want to spend a ton. I have looked into draft, sealed constructed (preferably pre-release), and tournaments (I think that's what they were, its the format where you get X many packs the first week and get 1 more each additional week), but I'm wondering if there is another way because the closest card shop that offers any of those events is at least 30 min. Away, I can't drive and I'm sure whoever would drive me there wouldn't be stoked about shuttling someone else at midnight. Anything helps, thanks for reading, I know it was long.
