@@OrphanCrippler1 the squeaky wheel gets the grease. It may seem odd to those raised under the idea of not saying anything if you have nothing nice to say but I have always felt the opposite is a better policy, especially if the intent is to see improvement.

I think the Professor really hit the nail on the head with this one. My greatest disappointment with this is just that my playgroup of five people can't really sit down to it as it stands. I think I'm going to create another five half-decks myself so we can each run a full deck and have some un-fun. Also, I just want to add, I personally really like the precon aspect of this un-set. It's just going to be something I keep on the shelf and whenever my group wants to do something silly we can break it out and quickly get an un-game going. Un-drafts always left me with a pile of cards I'd never use again that wind up in a shoe box I stumble on every time I clean my room, get surprised by, chuckle at, and then put back in a corner.

Ross Calhoun That's very true... Luckily I bought myself a complete set of unstable some time ago, because I wanted to build a silver bordered cube I never built. I think I'll make some more half decks out of it to include more players and use it instead of the cube.

Who's to say you couldn't do a mashup of say, one of the Game Night precons. Or better yet, take Explorers of Ixalan to an absurd new level.

Absolutely love the dead pan delivery of the adverts. Always so much fun.

Take out the bling lands, lower the price a bit, repackage it with more half decks as a starter, and get it into Target next to Cards Against Humanity and Exploding Kittens. Then you get to sell "expansion packs" to a whole new gamer base.

To do this it would also have to drop price to ~$20. The current price is a joke. Remember the full art lands will always be majority of single prices. So if they included all full-art non-foil lands and sold it for $20, the lands would be valued at around $4-$5 per 10.

The reason why they are "bling" lands, is cuz of the retail price wizards puts on this shit. They sell the product at a high price so the resale of individual cards is high as well. Why should they give a fuck about the price we resell for? Release the fucking product for like $20, so it can only be resold for a couple of cents.

Honestly I was never more hyped and then more let down by a magic product. When I found out it was only two player was the biggest let down. Then I found out that those decks don't even have cool lands even more let down. Then I found out the price and knew I was not getting this product.

I do not think the Sword of Dungeons and Dragons was an exclusive promo. I know there was a promo *version* of it, but I did see it at the pre-prerelease for Unstable, which leads me to believe that it was in the set.

The Professor isn't wrong about the origins of the Sword of D&D - it absolutely was originally an exclusive promo, specifically one created for and available at Hascon, along with 2 other silver-bordered cards also referencing other Hasbro properties (specifically Nerf and Transformers) - he's just overlooked or forgotten that it was then later reprinted as part of Unstable (as the lone silver-bordered reprint in the set). Unsanctioned makes the 2nd time it's been reprinted.

Un Sets were always about fun, and the full art lands were a great bonus for picking up packs. WotC found a way to make both worse.

I disagree on one point. Whilst the full art land quantity was a joke, having preconstructed decks has some advantages. I can't get enough friends interested to run an Unsanctioned draft (and I have 3 boxes in the loft), but getting one or two friends to throw these precons together on a whim is feasible.

What's up with WOTC and being so stingy with the sought after lands? The Pokemon lands from TBD are only in booster packs and not in deckbuilder's toolkits or fat packs... It's like they EXPECT people to just open this product and sell the full art lands because that's the only thing you CAN do with them. It's a pre-constructed, silver-bordered product; I'm not going to buy 7 or more of the exact same product to bling out the basics in one commander deck... so what's the point of the lands at all other than generating buzz in the existing player base?

I don't think that'd a valid excuse though. If anything it'd help sell the product better. Instead they artificially keep their prices high by making the barrier to entry high for the lands. I'd say make all the lands full art and make the product sell well. If people are worried about the value of their basic lands, then there's inherent problem with this game.

Another thing... a few hours later, watching another video about this product. Wizards should stop depending on Magic players to have everything they need for a game. There should be cardboard punchouts for mechanics like acorns and more tokens. This also should include more of a comprehensive rulebook, all the dice we think we'll need, life counters... It feels like Wizards is using the phrase "not for every player" as a blanket statement for purposefully bad made decisions. I usually think your reviews are good, Prof, but this review feels bad to me at a B' rating.

It would only be more expensive that way. I prefer if only the most necessary things are included. If there were dice in every Magic product, you'd end up having so many that you have to throw them away.

THIS. This is why I hope WotC only included one of each full art - so that people who are only interested in the lands don't buy it, making it more available to people who want it to actually play with the silver-border card

For multiplayer options with 5 or less players, I recommend dealing these out face down at random and then fire up an Unstable draft, with each player using the half deck as a starting line.

I really like Unsanctioned, it's the most fun I've had playing 1v1 magic in like forever, and as someone who primarily plays commander it's nice to have something to pull out and play and have alot of fun with when only one of my friends is around, being able to support multiplayer would be so good but like it's still fun for what it is, and was also way more fun than most of the previous duel decks that I've played with

A friend of mine recently got into Magic, which had awoken me from my slumber and got me into it (again) as well. I don't have any decks other than a preconstructed commander deck, so I wanted to get something to have a few games with. Apparenty Wizards has released a version without any fullarts which goes for about 20 euros, found it on discount at my LGS for about 15, so I was quite hyped. We've had a good time with it, and having reprints of older Un- cards is great for those of us who haven't been around for the first two Un-sets. I had no idea the other version only had 10 fullarts tho, that is just quite disappointing. Great video, love Un- sets, don't love needlessly hiking up the price of products

A lot of good valid points. I think your grade was a little high still. Because outside of the fancy lands, there is no real collectabillity and the replay value is limited. Like you said, there should be more half-decks. I think wizards was worried about the synergies more than the replayability of this smash-up game. I think a 'C+' would be more fitting of a grade.

I would disagree, because I think the value is additive - I'm picking my copy up tonight, and then we'll play a bunch of games until we get bored with the 120 permutations possible. Then we might tweak them, but realistically then we're gonna take those new cards (and the reprints of stuff I missed out on in the past) and add them to our existing (and new!) commander decks. (I could add in "sell the fancy lands and replace with basics", but I'm keeping those.) 15 cards for 50 bucks is ~3 bucks a card. That seems like a better value than the Theros Secret Lair! tl;dr - viewed as "here's 15 new cards and 10 full art lands, plus some filler to play a side game with, for $50", I think it's a solid buy (if you're into Un cards, anyway.)

I think that C+ is over generous - it should be rated at below Games Night product! It supports less players than similar products (Games Nights / Explorer's of Ixalan) and is double the price of a Duel Deck. Definitely a D.

This product is a C- at best. I'm looking at as a board game. I would unlikely use the cards in commander so I would only play the set as in the box (maybe buy draft backs and make it draft-able but nothing besides that). Compared to other games like this you get half of the content for double the price. Should have been 8-10 half decks at a price tag of around 30 bucks. Hopefully the support for this product will be low so WotC wont release this kind of product for such a high price.

I had never heard of Smash Up but the box looks really cool. I'm going to check it out!

@@TheMagicAlien It is a great review and the product overall is not bad. I just think the premise of offering Magic as a board game is fundamentally flawed. At its current price the game just can't compete with other board games. Factor in Magic's complexity and it's not a game you can just pick up and play with anyone. Smash Up on the other hand appears to offer a comparable experience to Unsactioned, while being just a whacky, and less expensive. To me it just seems like a more sensible choice.

As a newer player with little to no access to UN-cards of the past, I'm excited for this set as a chance to try this format of Magic with only having to buy a single sealed product. Plus, if I buy my own copy, and a friend does as well, we can combine them together to play with more people or play two colors against each other. Your critiques are very valid, but personally, I'm looking forward to picking this up.

I have not needed a Prof evaluation of a product in quite some time - I find my own opinion already aligns with these videos frequently. But this is a product where I really was having an issue figuring out how much I wanted it. I am an Un-set fan and my interest in this is very strong, so I wasn't sure if it would be worth getting ripped off for. But at a solid B, you've definitely helped me see the value of the box and I'm going to pick one up. Wizards better be thankful, I was on the verge of skipping this thing and just trying to find the new singles.

One thing to note if you plan on keeping your Unsanctioned cards in the box they came in and bringing it out for super-quick, super-casual Magic gameplay: the pre-moulded plastic insert inside the box doesn’t fit the 30-card decks once they’re sleeved, even in the most basic Ultra-Pro sleeves possible. If you take the insert out, the box does hold three of the super-cheap Ultra Pro deckboxes (or other brand equivalent), so you can use those to organise the decks, two per deckbox with the last deck and the tokens in the last box, just to stop the cards sliding around loose inside the box, getting unintentionally mixed up and, more importantly, potentially getting damaged. This does add extra cost onto the product though, and it’s an oversight you’d expect Wizards to not be making any more since even the super-basic cardboard boxes they include in Planeswalker decks are big enough to hold a sleeved 60-card deck. For me it was an extra £15 on top of the Unsanctioned product ( £9 sleeves, £6 boxes) to sleeve and store the cards in a way that made them ready to just play with at a moment’s notice. For what it’s worth, though, the games are super fun, especially if you and the people you play with have their own Unanctioned box so there’s less limited deck setup choice. My LGS had a little thing this weekend for Unstable’s launch, and we wound up playing three or four-way multiplayer games, which was pretty great. There are people on eBay flipping their Unsanctioned boxes mostly still sealed, just missing the fancy full-art lands, for a big markdown on price - I’ve seen some go for as low as £20-£25, your mileage may vary - and while you should support your LGS where you can, if all you want is the decks that’s probably the best way to go about getting them, because at the end of the day, that’s where the issue lies: gameplay is fun, but the cost is pretty high for what you get.

Love how if you want to load your decks with either version of the full art lands you only get 1 copy each foil/nonfoil. I’ll go to the prerelease event but that dropped me from a “buying 2 box sets” to “maybe, maybe not” on one. (I just like to have all my lands be one version or all two versions. Can’t afford to fill out a deck with even one land type of the nonfoil...don’t see the prices dropping anytime.)

I'd like that Urza's Saga pack. I remember opening those in middle school. Oh man, I wish I still had some of them, or knew which cards I had back then that I sold while in college. Only cards I know I had were Defense of the Heart, Aura Flux, and Phyrexian Debaser. Only things that really stick out in my mind when I look through the sets from then.

As always a well done marketing strategy analysis. I'm currently doing an MBA program and it's becoming glaringly obvious that WotC pays little attention to the aspects of strategy that you easily identify every time. Time after time they make strange and or poor strategy decisions.

Is it possible to add the links for the other games you mentioned in the description as well? I'm now interested in checking those out too since they are better priced.

Very good, honest review that made many, many good points. But Professor, you forgot about one thing - that the non-fullart lands do have some value beyond regular basics, much like the guild kit basic lands. They are all squirrel-themed. Each art has a squirrel hidden in the topography. Of course, how much these squirrel-art lands are worth in value, is up to the player.

Agree all around. When the announced it, it sounded great. But also like a $30-$40 product at most. When I saw stores dropping it for $60, I was flabbergasted. It's so clear that they inflated the price because of the lands and then didn't even give enough of the lands. When I mentioned this on twitter, Maro tried to fire back about all the 'value' in the box. Look, I love Un-sets. I love full art lands. But this ain't it, Chef. The only silver lining (bordering?) is that I might just sell the lands so I can get the new uncards for cheap, but I really wish I didn't have to do that. I bought a box of Unstable to draft and not only did I have a great time doing so, I got some awesome lands that I use as my draft kit. Those packs weren't marked up for the land and they felt more like a nice include rather than a price grab as these do.

That's not upside down; it's right side up, at least if you look at the back of the card. The face of Topsy Turvy is printed upside down relative to the card back.

I only bought it because I built unset commander decks out of the unstable guys and really wanted to do the 5 2-color legends in here as well. Considering I am needing of about 95% of the cards in the box and seeing as ordering the singles I needed was more expensive than just ordering it, not to mention the fancy lands or the included tokens, which I was pretty excited for, I just decided to buy it.

I would've preferred the art of B.O.B. to be a collection of beebles all mashed together similar to Myr Battlesphere. That would've made more sense to me.

First video of yours I actually 100% agree with. It's a good base product to have fun with and build upon, but it is a bit too pricey. I bought two of them just so I could support multiplayer instead of it being strictly a 2-player experience, and swapped a couple cards that either did nothing in games, or prolonged the games waaay to much (looking at you Enter the Dungeon!) UN games are already pretty long to begin with. But after watching this video I'll probably try to make each of my 10 30-card decks unique now for even more replay-ability.
