    For the cost of a Deck Builder's Toolkit, you can check out great decklists for Friday Night Magic gameplay like this $20 G/B deck from SBMTG: kzread.info/dash/bejne/rJuGqbybosqwoM4.html

    Igor Della Pietra because a deck with majority one of and two ofs will not be good at FNM. you want good cheap decks check out devs channel ive taken three of his budget decks to 3-0 finishes at FNM. also his dynavolt tower deck i 3-0 everytime i played it. his decks are cheap but powerful.

    Hey, prof! Odds are you won't read this through the 162 comments before it but hey, it's worth a shot. I'm a huge fan of the toolkit. It helps me figure out some new deck options for standard, sometimes (more on that in a sec). Therefore, I have learned a good number of things about it: The deck builder's toolkit is a little more complex than I think you give it credit for. The 4 non-booster packs each serve a purpose. The one with the rares in it is the guaranteed pack (semi-randomized has a semi in it for a reason). The abrade, cast out, doomfall, etc. are guaranteed. Those are cards that every deck builder's toolkit has in it. The evolving wilds pack is something else, however. It is my personal favorite part. Between each of the evolving wilds is a set of 10 cards (5 uncommons and 5 commons) that act as a basis for a deck. In Ixalan, specifically, the 4 are seperated into 1 vamprie deck, 1 merfolk deck, 1 of 2 dinosaur decks (Either RW or RG), and 1 of 2 pirate decks (Either UB or BR). There is also a chance of getting an off-tribe deck, which is UG ramp. The rest of the packs are just lands. That, in my opinion, is the great part of the deck builder's toolkit, to new and old players. It shows people how the new set translates into standard! What cards go into what decks and what decks are viable, etc. My friend just entered Magic the week before prerelease and he got a toolkit last weekend. With a little help from us and the cards from the toolkit and his prerelease pack, he made a really good RW All-in Dinosaur aggro deck for the budget he has. I think the toolkit's imperfect decks are a good thing: they teach players what aspects of a deck are important and what to improve upon. Nobody learns from a perfect deck nearly as well as they do from a bad one. So, to answer your question at 8:08, yes. You're not gonna make a perfect deck out of a toolkit, but nobody can learn what a feast is without first knowing what famine is. (Eh, get it?)

    Since you mentioned them, I wanted to say that I got a set of the Rookie decks a little while back and had some games with my brother and a friend with them. It was scary going in because I had the most recent experience with one entire hour of Duels playtime under my belt, my brother was astounded that the card backs are the same as they were in Ice Age, and my friend had never even heard of MTG before. We taught her the flow of the turn with the aid of the inserts, taught her about the different kinds spells from memory, and had a jolly good time of things! I had yet to watch the video you made on how to go about teaching friends to play Magic, but I think my brother and I would have done ya proud. We advised her on better times and targets for Unsummon, how to assign damage in such a way as to maximize her creatures' effectiveness, and even ended up letting her win. Not because we had the means to stop her but chose not to, but because we all took care to split damage between the three of us so nobody was getting ganged up on and she ended up with too many flyers to deal with. Of the lot, Red was the most inconsistent. Blue and Green featured 4 of each card it included, Black and White had mostly 4 with a couple of 3s and 2s, but Red was entirely 3s and 2s and none of the 4s were particularly powerful relative to the other decks. I know each deck is made with what they have on hand and they can't guarantee a deck with specific contents, but I was hoping each would be equally consistent. As a teaching tool and as a kitchen table funsies product, they were great! Certainly better than buying an equivalent cost in packs and hoping to stumble into something decent, thanks to each deck having a theme it was built around. The cases are greatly appreciated since we have a lot of board and card games to keep track of, and hard plastic defends against our cat's attempts at murder much better than thin cardboard. I do think a third insert explaining the card types would be a fantastic addition, but our little group didn't happen to need it.

    Yeah I've always been of the opinion that they should be released with the second set of a block and give you 2 boosters from each. Cos at the moment the 100 fixed cards you get with the pack end up being a mix of the most mediocre commons/uncommons from 3-4 disjointed sets. Whereas if they just waited to the second set you'd at least have mediocre cards that synergise properly and if you've got 4 boosters from the same block you're 2/3 of the way to a pre-release pack anyway. This is especially the case for a tribal set like Ixalan given that tribal synergies from it don't really work with Amonkhet/Kaladesh whereas a load of mediocre tribal cards together can at least do something

Casually getting back into magic now, I still use the box it all came in.

    I also think that getting only a few cards, not a playset, that are the good tools are helpful for a new player due to exposure. First, it shows some options which helps if you may not have friends who play Magic or something. Next, if they know they can put multiple of those cards in a deck (I remember when I just started, I probably would have assumed it was more similar to commander, where you can only have one of each) it helps give a little push to seek out singles. Not all new players might go along with it, but the community helpful, giving pointers to new players. It's a way to learn what I've learned, that it's difficult to go anywhere in this game alone (outside of playing, of course), so make some friends and the level of fun will rocket up exponentially. It provides help and a lot of opportunity for casual games to learn from.

    I really like the lid on this box. I got a huge box of cards for Christmas and recently ended up dropping my entire collection, still haven't gotten around to reorganizing.

    I started playing MTG in this set and I bought one of these! I hold this set near and dear to me since it was my first. In fact I bought this box after watching this video years ago! Ah sweet memories :)

    The planeswalker decks and intro decks have always been good to me as well. I got a lilly of the dark realms, a growing rites of Itlomac, and several other high value items from the packs that come with. Don't know if thats just luck, but I've never lost money just buying the decks and i always net something.

    Showed Dev some love, I'll show it back 👍... SBMtG might be a little "long winded" when explaining his decks, but he DOES give you as much info about why each card is included into his builds (and also why he included X amount into them)

    While you left in a noticeable repeat near the end of your conclusion, I think it's still fine and enjoy your analysis and recommendations. Also, that toolkit at least gave that new player a valuable way to gain some tools with the Tyrant :)

    When me and my friends first started playing last years we all bought Deck builders toolkits and it was awesome. There was four of us and we were all on the same level. Would recommend for kitchen table players.

    I bought this pack as I have only started in the last few months and was outstanding lucky and pulled a Chromatic Lantern Masterpiece out of one of the boosters. That has paid for at least a few good decks.

    Hi Professor. I was wondering if you were going to review the Planeswalker decks too?

  • @Arghore
    @Arghore6 жыл бұрын

    *NOTE* ... imo some things were missing from this review ! ... 1. The stack of cards that have the evolving wilds in them are NOT random, this is a stack with (what i would call:) a suggested start for a deck. SO this toolbox holds 4 different 'semi-pre-constructed starter decks', and you would use the cards from the actual pile of semi random cards (with the rares) and the 4 boosters, to add to these suggestions (here we saw: "merfolk, pirates, vampires & dinos"). 2. Then when it comes to starting off with magic, when more then often you end up with budget decks, the toolbox holds some budget duals and the evolving wilds (if you check Dev's budget lists these are almost always in there, though noted will be that replacing the tapped dual with non-budget lands will be the likely first place for upgrades). And there are plenty a competitive decks that see a use for Evolving Wilds ! 3. Would also like to mention that, as a starting player you will likely want to go to pre-releases, and having your own (pre-sleeved) basic lands to take to this event is something i personally value pretty high. And lets face it, every deck will have some basic lands. 4. Imo. the toolbox seems to be designed to point new players towards the various synergies that are to be achieved when building a deck, which is likely also why the aforementioned 'deck-suggestions' are in the kit. 5. I think that if you were to combine the cards from a deck-builders toolkit, and actually understood the packaged lesson within it, and were to attend your first draft (using the (pre-sleeved) basic lands to save yourself some deckbuilding time). You could end up with a solid base for a fairly nice budget deck (yes you would likely still need to buy some singles, but at least you have a base collection to add cards to). End-closing, and this was in this video, i still think that for a beginning (or returning player that sold his/her collection) the toolkit is packed with value (mainly the lands and evolving wilds), seeing that as a 'budget player' (don't think i classify as starting anymore) i find myself grabbing these elements of these toolboxes every time i build a deck.

    Honestly I love picking these up. Great for new casuals like me imo to help me learn how to build a deck pretty easily which means when I get to spending more money on a more serious deck I will waste less money in duds or mechanics I'm not familiar with and also learning about synergy etc
