Many Magic: The Gathering players ask the question: Is it worth it to buy a starter cube? Cube is quite possibly the apotheosis of Magic: The Gathering, the greatest expression of the game in the ultimate format. Unfortunately, Cube is also extremely expensive, with even non-Power cubes often costing in the high hundreds if not thousands of dollars. Now, Card Kingdom has released a Starter Cube, designed and refined by Magic pro and game designer Chris Van Meter, and priced at only $99. But is this a genuine cube experience of balanced yet powerful Magic gameplay, or just a strictly worse cube that can’t hold a candle to the real experience? Let’s take a look!
But first, I quick word about this video. This channel is sponsored by the maker of this product, Card Kingdom, a Seattle based brick and mortar game store with a growing online presence, but my review of their product is just that: my own. Card Kingdom neither instructed me to make this review, nor have they even seen so much as a draft of the script for it. Although I am indeed sponsored by them I want to keep my evaluation open and honest as I would for any other review.
And thus along those lines, I am posting the entire deck list for the Card Kingdom Starter Cube in this video’s description. You do not have to buy this product from card Kingdom, there is no mystery as to the cards contained within, and you may assemble the components yourself either from your own collection or other sellers as you see fit. I am reviewing the construction of this as a Starter Cube, in other words, I am analyzing and evaluating the CUBE itself and asking if this gameplay experience is worth $100, but the complete list is yours for free and you may do with it what you wish.

Professor, The Starter Cube list you linked to is not accurate. The very clip you showed of LRR playing this cube shows a Profane Procession being played. This card is not in the list within that link. The fact that every guild except for Orzhov and Azorius have 3 multicolor cards and it is missing Profane Procession makes me think there is another missing card. White is also listed as having 2 more cards than every other color. So I suspect there are a couple extras in there.

Why does everybody seem to assume that every Cube is supposed to have extremely powerful and expensive cards in it? A Cube can be anything you want it to be, composed out of any type of collection. Skill in design can turn cards of any power level into an amazing strategic experience. I'm glad to see products like the Starter Cube moving the Cube community in the right direction.

@Proton I understand that, but there can be a big difference between just playing with powerful cards, and playing with a cube designed to create an interesting strategic experience. The recent Historic Cube in Arena is a good example of bad design: it's jammed with a lot of powerful stuff, but IMO it's not actually very well designed (doesn't have much in the way of coherent deck archetypes, too many multi-symbol monocolor cards making splashing super hard, etc.). The games I played basically devolved into either bomb races or color-screw, with very few interesting strategic decisions to make during gameplay. In fairness, it was a Sealed event, so maybe drafting it would help some, but I doubt it.

A re-review of the starter Cube would be interesting. Buying all 360 cards as singles in NM/EX condition currently costs ~ 38 Eur including tax and shipping. Since the current cube does afaik not contain sleeves that only leaves out the lands which are also So the current cube costs you about 2x what you would pay if you just bought all the cards individually. Not a great deal in my opinion.

Considering you talk in euros, might not even be a matter of time if you got those prices from Cardmarket. The price calculation was propably based on Card Kingdom's prices themselves, which are horrid for bulk. They seem to have a minimum price, right now it's 0.35 dollars, even if the card could be bought for few cents on TCGPlayer, or GameMarket.

Watching this video reminds me of the Cube’s predecessor: Type 4. Type 4 was a giant stack of magic cards that you drafted (just like cube) except with a few rule variations: start with 25 life and 5 cards in hand, no hand limit, one spell a turn, and infinite mana. This meant you of course had to avoid spells like Fireball or Shivan Dragon, but instants and abilities became absolutely vital. Another old school variant was Emperor. Played with at least six people (add four each increment) there would be generals (players) on each side of the emperor (also a player) and both teams would be set up this way. Teams would take their turns all at once (phase changes dictated by Emperor) and all creatures had “T:transfer control of creature to teammate sitting next to you. Lastly there was a targeting rule, where you could only target an opponent(s stuff) if there was no other opponent on that side sitting closer to you. This would mean emperors could target outer generals and their belongings but not the other emperor at the start of the game, as well as if the western general fought all the way to the opposing emperor, they still could NOT touch generals to the east, as the emperor would be in the way. Game would end after an emperor falls. I wish more people knew of these variants, ESPECIALLY emperor as the few people I know that have combined it with Commander have had great experiences. The reason I brought type 4 is that while you have to omit some cards, you get to play with other cards that were previously terrible due to high cmc or things like upkeep costs. I find variants to be the spice of magic life, and maybe others would too. Seems to be true with all the hype for Battlebond. Another game variations video would be perfect around the time of the set release...if that sort of video sounds like a good use of your time, of course. Keep up the great work!

I have wanted to build a cube ever since watching your videos. I am a low budget builder though and wasn't sure what I wanted to do that wouldn't cost an arm and a leg. Last year for Father's day, my wife bought me a booster box of Conspiracy. It was my first time drafting it and I loved the experience. I pulled some, but not all, of the expensive cards in the set. I'm working on a pseudo cube for Conspiracy so I can experience that draft environment with friends without having to buy more boosters. I think I'm about $50 off from finishing.

While there is a bunch of overlap between normal and EDH cubes I can not find any good content specifically regarding EDH cubes and would love to hear from a person who knows a fair bit of cube. Thanks for the video on this, while I like the idea of this, I'd have said a pauper cube would have been a better fit as a product. The gameplay would be more powerful and I'd say the price wouldn't be that much different. After building one on the channel in my budget cube build a long series it's been so much fun to create and play. Going through all the steps required to help a new player build their first cube and decisions they'd need to make. Plus let's face it pauper is a fantastic format! And then it's easily upgradable to peasant cube if you wanted to to increase the power level without too many of the cards becoming wasted.

I had a lot of fun putting my first cube together. I did a "reconstructed booster box", meaning that I used 36 rares, 108 uncommon, and 396 common. I'd heard that (at one point) mythic rares were 1:8 ratio in the rare slot, which would give me 4 mythics, but instead I went with 5 -- one for each color. My friends and I only played it once, but I had a lot of fun building it, testing it, and tweaking it. It stayed together for about six months until I started picking it apart for commander decks, and still sits in my pile of 'needs to be sorted' cards while I make the decision whether or not to rebuild it. Not only was it a fun exercise in creativity, it was also a great way to spend time with my magic collection thinking about some cards that I don't often use. Building a cube from scratch is time consuming, but worth the time investment from my point of view. I wouldn't buy the starter cube (personally) because I already have 95% of the cards from the list. But, I would recommend it to someone like my best friend who is seeking new magic experiences without wanting to spend a lot of time building "decks", and I did recommend it to a friend who just got back into MtG.

Milo: The Gathering I still have no idea how to construct a cube despite watching videos and reading articles. But I could certainly swap cards out of an already constructed cube.

I've always wanted to have a cube but constructing has always been the most intimidating part. I didn't realize that this even existed but now I really want to buy it just as a means of playing magic affordably with my draft friends. Thanks prof

This is an awesome product! I play pauper, legacy, standard, and modern. But sometimes I want to sit down with my friends on a Friday, and have a commander esque experience without really playing commander, as it’s not exactly something I enjoy. This is something I can get, and put cards into such as sideboard cards that will make the overall cube better. I can play dig through time, treasure cruise, batterskull, Jace, and all the other fun cards, while still having a casual, solid games! I’m really excited about this, and think I will eventually get one, to not only start with, but add great cards that I will find and enjoy over time. Card kingdom hit a home run on this one!

Constructive feedback: When you explain the three archetypes you discovered and overlay cards from them on the screen, you mix up the "Blink/Flicker" and "Sacrifice Matters" cards and titles below them. Around 4:45. I hope that makes sense and wasn't rude. Thank you for your video and everything you do for the Magic community!

Question prof: what is your opinion on adding the draft specific cards from conspiracy and conspiracy 2 to this cube? Are those sets even considered good for cube?

I’ve been playing for approximately 23-24 years now and if I make this decision to move I will lose all my play groups I play with because I am thinking of moving about 18 hours away, and I can play cube with newer players and teach my kids how to play

This looks wonderful! I have always found playing at my LGS or with my local friends to be disheartening as they have often shown to have extremely powerful decks that are more win focused than play. It’s sad but understandable that they can’t ship sealed product internationally or I would save and buy this in a heart beat. Perhaps I’ll visit the Seattle HQ next year and see if I can pick one up, this looks like literally endless fun at a nicely balanced level.

I've watched a few of these Cube videos and was able to go to Card Kingdom, see their list and go, "hmm, I have many of those cards" and built my first Cube from that list. I had maybe 2/3-3/4 of the cards listed and then used comparable cards to fill out the missing gaps. Now I just need for COVID to end so I can use it with friends!

I’ve been toying with casual cubes for 2 years and had some fun with it but never settled on one I liked. This gave me a template to go by, so I looked through the list, pulled all the cards in my collection that goes in there and then matched as many of the missing ones with similar cards in terms of type, cost and impact I could. Bought the rest as singles and I’m really looking forward to trying it out. You can even upgrade it over time if you really enjoy the archetypes. Just replace a few cards with better ones at the same time and get better non-basics like scry lands or whatever your budget allows.

a friend of mine makes cube to be very close to a real pack(only taking out useless jank cards) and uses blocks to make cubes, even combining two different blocks with 8 players can be fun too, an 8 player Ravnica block and RTR block was a very fun cube experience because most of the packs felt like a regular pack. i feel i had the most fun with that way to cube so when i make my own i wanna make it as close to real drafting while cutting the jank cards, i love the traditional cube decks but i found only the more serious players can enjoy it and the casual friends who play have a tough time knowing what to draft.

Hey professor, one thing I missed on your video was that you didn't commented that are 3 versions of the cube, like if is it worth it to buy different versions to complement each other the simple differences between then.... but overall great video thankss for sharing this product

FYI, not sure if it's been mentioned yet, but the archetype breakdown portion of the video has an error where the key card images and archetypes are backwards for blink/flicker and sacrifice matters cards see 4:50 in the vid.

  • @ChrisVanMeter

Yeah it would actually! V1 of the cube had a lot of "draft matters cards from Conspiracy and Take the Crown". In our initial testing before we pivoted to a "starter Cube" we did have conspiracies in it. It was very fun, but didn't quite provide the gameplay experience we were looking for for the first cube product.

This looks like it may just be the perfect product for me. I love limited and don't own a cube myself but have been curious about cube. I rarely get to play with anyone and when I do I almost always have to teach them with the card kingdom battle decks which are awesome but don't teach them how to build a deck. Plus I get tired of playing the same decks and I wanna brew myself sometimes without braking the bank.

Good starter cube list: Can attest first hand. I built this from cards I already had and ordered the rest for like $30. It's basically a powerful pauper cube with key uncommoms, rares and mythics to spice things up. Very well balanced and a ton of fun to draft or play sealed. Great list!!!
