Jay was stunned to say the least. What does it matter that he is possibly weak in one back position? This does not diminish its uniqueness.

Still i think it was controversial cuz Dorian had 1 arm completely injured so he had 0 symetry. If Nasser had better condition he would won.

it's not just size, he had the front but never had the back. Washed out and nonexistent glutes and semi washed out hamstrings, washed out back with subpar development. So many people talk about Dillet's and Nasser's backs but Lee's back was 2x worse than the rest of his body. He makes people we call "narrow" look wider than barn doors.

Loved Dorian, but Shawn Ray was so perfect in many ways. Physique, looks, overall presentation and excellent public speaker. He would have been a great representative for the sport as Mr. Olympia.

Ronnie Coleman was out of top six at that time. But a year after, he began his reign. What a big progression in Mr. O history. I thought Nasser, Levrone, or Flex Wheeler would be the next Mr O after Dorian retired, but it was Ronnie.

The reason why Dorian won and nasser came 2nd was that Even Dorian had injured arm but nasser can not defeat Dorian in back double, Back lats spread , front lats spread, and side tricep. Dorian didn't have perfect scores in 1997 and even if he did all that means is that every single judge on the judging panel had him 1st in placings. If even a single judge had him placing 2nd or 3rd or whatever, he wouldn't have perfect scores. Maybe acquire some knowledge before calling someone "boy", boy.

he was really off in prejudging( this footage is from the finals-the end part where he got drier/better) i have the scorecards and kevin was tied for third in finals with ray on scoresheets. Back then condition really mattered

A friend of mine went to this show. He said hands down, Lee has the hardest muscles out of all of them by far.

@@dj_m1999 Usually a person with the lowest bodyfat will have the hardest muscles. But sometimes its not the case. How hard you can flex your muscles is determine by how you work out. I also remember him telling me even when compared to Dorian Yates. Lee's muscles are just harder. From our perspective Dorian looks the hardest. But It is something you have to feel in person to know. And that is what my friend did.

Dorian still the best, still the most shredded.

I don't know where is the controversy here.... Dorian is way drier and conditioned than everyone else... He is winning the most number of mandatory poses

The only thing that matters is how Yates and his midsection looked during the actual show when the judges were judging them, during posing.

dorian is one of those guys who really shines when placed next to other people cos it shows his conditioning and size, things you can't judge as well when they're doing their individual routines. He doesn't look the best just standing there on his own but put him next to people and he makes them look small and soft

he had a different physique than most of the lineup and he played to his strengths. Arguably he could've should've tried to come in fuller and bubblier but he had very thin skin and was naturally just lean, so getting shredded opened so many doors for him in terms of the placings. BECAUSE he always lacked that fullness, his physique didn't translate well on cut off pictures and video footage with no objects to compare. That's why Flex Wheeler doesn't look 218 pounds when he's by himself. He looks 250. Then you put him next to Dorian and suddenly he looks that 218 again, because there is simply a larger object to actually compare him against and gauge size.

Sonbaty from the front was sensational but his back was really weak. Dorian wasnt at his best here but he still was overall better

Dorian best back ever. Nasser always looked amazing in front but miserable in the back. Always was his weak point. Greatness .

Exactly! Dorian is so much more conditioned than the others and still has a great volume. I agree Lee has the best arms, Paul has the best abdominals and lats, Levrone has the best shoulders, Nasser has the best chest and lines. But the best physique overall, considering volume, density, conditioning and posing was definitly Dorian.

I can see where the Dorian haters and naysayers are coming from, however just imagine the mindset of the great Yates, with all his injuries, training limitations, behold the physique he brought on stage, says a lot about his steely determination and spirit. Many thanks for the upload, all the physiques on stage look awesome but Yates was the best even without the bicep in my opinion.

Yeah it's a bit sad. Back in the 90es the bodybuilding press were making features on what a warrior he was for fighting all those injuries and sticking to it. Nowadays people call him a "train wreck" in 97, and whinge about the title being stolen. Hindsight and malice are a strong combination.

@@chytaan youtubers who were kids( if that) in 97 dont qualify as experts dorian destroyed nasser in the 2 back poses and edged him out in the front lat spread and side triceps in pics nassers side tri looks comparable but in video you can see how clumsy it was but then again the abs thigh was close also, because when he did flex his abs dorians waist was comparaible sized to nassers, as were the lats quads etc nasser only dominated one mandatory and one only-FDB side chest?DORIAN WINS look closely at 4 :29 just how grainy dorian was in that pose, how much more striated his chest is and how more separated his side leg is also.Nasser has some giant but sot looking delts thats it.Arms difference isnt THAT big in this pose at least so even if you want to say some poses are tie, dorian still wins because he dominated more poses than nasser he also had better conditioning, esp in side and back poses he was more detailed he also had a better strucure, nasser was very shallow in the side poses look at first pose in this video how much denser and thicker dorian was in the side relaxed pose, and he also trounced nasser in the rear relaxed pose nasser had a very long torso and short stumpy legs which is hardly ideal structure for bb sorry but dorian won this , it was closer than in years prior but a win nonetheless

After re watching this olympia I think it's not as controversial as people think with Dorian winning. Granted the torn bicep looked like shit but the torn tricep is not really noticeable. His gut was slightly distended. His conditioning was still rock solid. Maybe Nasser did just enough but it was not a clear robbery.

I agree, yes Naser looks better in the front poses but I called it 3 for Naser, ,standing relaxed, FDB, and abs and thigh. - Dorian took all the back shots. - The side shots could go either way and it’s evident Naser did not Knockout the champ.

Yea, you know, I've been into lifting and fitness my whole life, and have followed this since the early 80's. This is the first time I've actually seen the full comparisons of this contest. I agree with you that Dorian won, and it was the right call.

Dorian Yates is one of the greatest sportsman my country has ever produced, though very few English actually know who he is. If he would've achieved what he achieved in any other sport that wouldn't be the case. Sad 😔

Dorian is the driest of them all. No one can hit that inner leg (sartorius) like the shadow. Short torso/long legs....winner.

Agreed..dorain had the best overall physique ....even with the injury he has it..he looked awesome

Fun fact,more than 30% of professional bodybuilders use Synathol, and the muscle tear that hit Durian's biceps wasn't from Bicep workout, but from training back 3 times a week

Lee Priest tremenda definición merecía el 4to lugar.

That is a crazy lineup. Late 90's was so stacked. Early 00's as well.

If there was a 212-pound shorter than 5'5 in height division Lee Priest would have won it 10 years straight. For a 5'4 guy with zero bubble gut to place 5th against these mass monsters is insane

Yates brought a graininess which made him look like stone. It literally made everyone else look soft. And his back was second to none.

Dorian is a human tank and now after watching this...he was in better condition than everyone else. I can see why they gave it to him despite this being a "controversial" win.

Funny how he was , even in off mode, harder than anyone.He did hold a slight film of water id say but it is small.. Ppl always go on about his torn triceps/biceps but the real issue , both here and 94, after watching the tapes and seeing all the pics posisble, was the midsection which was kinda blocky...well in 94 the tan was off also the torn body parts hardly affected him really.

Honestly frustrates me when folk say nasser wins this show. He's no where near Yates. There's 2 competitions here. Yates is in one. The rest are fighting for 2nd. Yates even with the bust arm and ripped quad. Dominates. He loses one pose that's it. Nasser (rip) is too long in the torso and too short in the legs. Throws his balance off. Let's not start on his back, it's poor. Dorian dominates in all the super hard body parts which everyone struggles with. I could go on and on.. Dorian was a genetic freak with his body. Short torso long legs, a back that was inhuman, unbeatable forearms, calfs. Just unbeatable...

@@stevenmccusker2563 Well I have the list with ALL the call-outs in this show The first call-out was DY-Nasser and Dillett.There was another call-out with Ray Nasser DY.And another one with just the 2 of them.The fact that they had had a 2 man call-out shows they werent quite sure..aka its close. Id say he loses the abs thigh too here. Agree Dorian had a much better structure-shorter torso and longer legs, and from the side a deeper ribcage.He also hit the mandatories better. He was also a little harder and more detailed especially in side and back poses. So even if they weighed more or less the same( I think Nasser was about 5 lb heavier), Dorian was more conditioned and had better frame.

had paul dillet knew how to pose and improve his back without cramoing he would have been unstoppable

Everyone saying Nasser won, look at all compulsory poses, Other than front double biceps, Nasser couldn't beat Dorian in any poses. Dorian maybe in his worst shape but while posing, he hid his muscle tears and weaknesses very well. There's no controversy.

7 mandatory poses. You need to win only 4 of the 7. People seem to forget that.

Better quality video. For all the Nasser fans out there that think he won this quality video shows the quality muscle density, maturity. Muscle separation, graininess and dryness that Yates has over everyone else. I think this video shows that Dorians gut wasn’t as large as stated and hell Levrone has a little one going too.

Lee Priest and Nasser the Best.

Everyone slams Yates who won the show, yet he didn't have a quart of synthetic in his arms like Nasser did. You can compare Nasser 1996 to Nasser 1997 and you'll see the difference in the hardness and cuts in his arms. That and the film of water he was holding overall as well.

@@shred9475 his weaknesses were condensed in a single body part, Nasser was soft all over. When he turned around he looked bad and unimpressive from the calves to the neck. That's not a "oh he looked bad calves, oh he bad hamstrings" that's the entire physique from top to bottom. 0:04 that's your Mr. Olympia? Mr. Oilman more like. Mr. Softasabarofsoap

Он сам говорил потом в интервью что не был готов к этой олимпии...тяж подготовка много травм и надорваный трицепс не позволял ему подготовится на все 100 проц...хотя мож это все отговорка...по мне сомбати был лучше формой и качеством... меньше талия была...

It was a gift💀he literally got perfect scores while riddled with injuries and was uncharacteristically smooth from the front torso and rear lower body he didn’t deserve the sandow that year he honestly should’ve been lucky to even take 3rd or 4th but the politics back then was insane

Hopefully you have a working set of eye balls to realize that his glutes are the most etched out and sunk in, everyone else in that line up has pancake glutes with 0 striations (except for little Shawn at the end) Of course you're peddling the "it's all politics bro 💀💀💀" while not even possessing the bare bone knowledge on what "perfect scores" even means.

Shawn Ray and Lee Priest would be battling for 212 if that class was available back then. Amazing physiques.

I had Nasser winning but if Kevin won, I'd be ok w/ that too.

so it was not only about front double biceps, right? Dorian still took front lat spread, two back poses, side tri and even side chest, He was not overdieted and flat here any more and dominated Nasser in side thickness. 5 pose out of 7 means he is the winner. no controversy here

@@David-es8dy no, that's a fact not only my opinion. bodybuilding contests are not judged by back, legs, biceps or any other bodypart. It's about mandatory poses and rounds. Dorian wins more poses and more rounds. get a clue

@@David-es8dy Dorian beat Nasser from the front AND the side in the majority of the poses. Nasser won the FDB, A&T, SC and front relaxed! Dorian.. FLS, BLS, BDB, ST, and 3/4 quarter turns. With superior conditioning, 7-4 dorian... Nasser looked amazing from the front, shallow from the side, A back that was nowhere to be seen, and mediocre conditioning! Nasser actually pushed dorian in the FLS and we all know that's dorians signature pose but dorian didn't actually win that pose by a landslide (like he usually does) so even if Nasser won that, dorian still wins it 6-5! Simple mathematics!

I almost thought im alone with that opinion.zero controversy.i think a lot of people make the mistake to judge bodypart for bodypart and forget that is the complete package that counts plus the quality and how hard and shredded it is...especialy by dorian it made a big difference..

Nasser the Dominant and clear cut real winner of this show... What a scar on the sport

@@dj_m1999 comically, at 0:05 you can actually see striation in Nasser's left glute, none of which can be seen for Dorian. Dorian still has the best back, but Nasser has the over-all better physique on that day. Dorians arms are just way too bad to be considered the winner. He literally has no left bicep

he had mediocre leg, and bloated gut at that time, he never had a good chest to begin with. He only had a great back, and god level conditioning. He's the first responsible of the bubble gut era, what a legacy.

Nasser was miserable in the back. Always was his weak point. Greatness

Seriously thats it? just because he had one weak point!!!! so you giving Dorian the title just because he had a good back!!!!! what about Dorian's torn biceps and his awful mid section .

I agree Lee has the best arms, Paul has the best abdominals and lats, Levrone has the best shoulders, Nasser has the best chest and lines. But the best physique overall, considering volume, density, conditioning and posing was definitly Dorian.

Dorian's conditioning was on another planet. Even with a suspect left arm, most of the poses he won. Nobody else brought anything new or better.

The camera man is focusing on Nasser for a reason. Everyone watching the show that day knew who the clear winner was.

Я десятилетия так думал пока не посмотрел внимательно на эти кадры и индивидуальное позирование, сзади Дориан выигрывает все и у всех, в 1997 его спина стала еще больше без потерь в качестве, добавим сюда широчайшие спереди и трицепс сбоку и по совокупности поз он выигрывает не смотря на рваные руки и беременный живот. Я бы скорее Шон Рею дал, но не Нассеру если уж Дориана наказывать за травмы. А так Ятсу уважение при таких травмах и недостатках его кондиции все равно лучше чем у Эль Сонбати
