    Correction for the end: Flex beat Nasser in _every_ round, not just the symmetry round. But the perfect score in round one does suggest some questionable judging at this show IMO.

  • @timjones7336

    @timjones7336

    Perfect score just meant every judge ranked Flex first. Ronnie was overlooked in the first round & didn’t have enough oil on so looked a bit smoother than he probably was. Flex was a great poser and was very confident, so eyes tended to follow him vs. Nasser; who was a bit akward in comparison. Like 1997, Nasser sort of “lost” 1998 more than being beaten. His physique was there (questionably smoothly delts & suspicious biceps aside) but they way he moved and posed opened the door for those with more gravitas

    Yes, Nasser got shafted, imo. He got shafted quite a few times throughout his career. Most people suggest that it was due to his back. But I think that there was more to it than just that. It probably had a lot of do with off stage or political things.

    What this video fails to convey is the sub-context of the day. FLEX was the heir apparent and sported some of the most insane God given genetics this side of Phil Heath. Every pro from that era said an on point FLEX was a mind boggling sight to behold. As far as Nasser, he was legendary for his critical views on the IFBB and especially the judging. Even if Nasser liked you, he was difficult to deal with. If he didn't like you, shit, forget about it. The IFBB was never going to reward his amazing talent because he was always at odds with them.

    Good point. Flex winning the AC and Ironman in stellar form earlier in the year probably put him as the frontrunner in the judges' minds going into the show. Yet let's not forget that Nasser was a close 2nd to Yates the year before. But you're right about the personality issue and politics going on behind the scenes.

While still outstanding in 98 he was no where near the level of Ronnie. Post 99 Arnold WIn , Nasser was totally washed up. Ronnie NEVER was close to losing an Olympia to Gunther despite your fanboying. It's surprising how small Ronnie looks in many of the front poses his legs are like the same size as Wheeler's its crazy to see how much bigger he got in later years like 2000, 2003, and 2004. Nonetheless Ronnie's victory was well deserved. As for Nasser pose for pose he is definitely second so if you think that is enough for him to be in 2nd place then he deserved to be 2nd but for me I think overall it was still pretty close between Flex and Nasser I don't have a problem with Flex in 2nd but if Nasser was 2nd that would be fine too.

His quads are noticeably larger than Flex, so are his glutes, lats and chest.Arms, delts, calves look same size tbh. On footage it is not very clear, but Nasser lacked a lot of symmetry (especially the lat and delt) due to whatever he used which ruined his physique, and he was always very soft (other than the crazy ham) from the back... Just another side of the coin and my opinion though, after watching your video I can clearly see why Nasser could get a 2nd spot just like he did the year prior. Looking forward for the 99 now! Dorian Yates' retirement from winning was the beginning of the so called "mass monsters". Dorian Yates was however the first, after a long string of wins by Lee Haney who had mass size and amazing symmetry. Flex Wheeler was era defining.

    @1:54 Although we can agree that we would probably all like to look like Flex Wheeler, his biceps looked very soft this year along with other body parts lagging in size. From the front I still lean towards Nasser, because I have a very low gyno tolerance.

    Ronnie barely deserved to beat Nasser here.The only poses that he obviously won are side chest( pics show it better) and 2 back shots, thats it. I think his side triceps was as good as it ever was here too, and i have hunch its the one pose that clinched it . I just dont see him winning the FDB. Nasser is clearly bigger and his quads although not as shapely look just as cut( Ronnies quads lacked separation in 98 ).And we can't dismiss Nasser's better looking chest abs and calves and even taper advantage.Heck even his lats form the front look better. FLS is clearly Nasser.Even his lats are better. Abs thigh i still think goes to Nasser, his abs and taper are still way better than Ronnies and in terms of quad size and separation they are tied imo. In the symmetry round Ronnie was a distant THIRD, i think he barely beat Ray( who was in his all time worst condition ever) by 1 point.Its almost a give Ronnie lost the 2 side relaxed poses and i suspect he lost the front relaxed too. As for Flex, he really wasn't a factor in this show.He really peaked earlier that year at the Ironman and AC( which many experts consider his best ever versions).At the final announcement the crowd seriously booed when Nasser was announced in third place, even more proof he got royally screwed. I just dont see how the judges had him a close 2nd when he is down in muscularity to Nasser( El Sonbaty was a reported 275 lb and Flex said he weighed in 227lb in the Flex report), and in terms of condition they seem close.Flex also had something funky in his shoulders( Ray said it was esciclene), but Nassers arms might not be pure muscle either. By most accounts Ronnie got better as prejudging went along.He was also somewhat flat according to Peter McGough.He also was among the last if not the last competitor to pose in the both( he was competitor # 16 out of 18).So by the time he hits his individual mandatories the judges had already made up their mind on which guys to have in the first call-out. Here is the list with all call-outs in prejudging Round One: Symmetry Sonbaty-Wheeler-Levrone Coleman-Ray-Priest Flex-Dillett-Ray Ray-Coleman-Sonbaty Ray-Coleman-Dillett Priest-Levrone-Wheeler Matarazzo-Cormier-Fux Coleman-Sonbaty-Levrone Coleman-Wheeler-Priest Coleman-Sonbaty-Wheeler Coleman-Ray-Wheeler Cormier-Taylor-Moya Sarcev-Taylor-Moya Sarcev-Charles-Baker Groulx-Schlierkamp-Haidar Priest-Ray-Levrone Dillett-Ray-Levrone Dillett-Cormier-Fux Priest-Cormier-Sarcev Coleman-Ray-Levrone Ray-Wheeler-Sonbaty Levrone-Coleman-Dillett Ronnie had alot of call-outs, so the myth that he was overlooked doesnt hold weight. Round Two: Compulsory Poses Sonbaty-Coleman-Wheeler Levrone-Sonbaty-Ray Levrone-Coleman-Ray Taylor-Cormier-Priest Levrone-Ray-Wheeler Taylor-Cormier-Priest Sarcev-Moya-Fux Ray-Levrone-Cormier Baker-Charles-Moya Haidar-Schlierkamp-Groulx Levrone-Priest-Ray Wheeler-Sonbaty-Coleman 1998 was also the year when Ronnies posing routine was really good also.He even admitted copying Shawn Ray's routine from 97.And for a fun fact, he copied his 98 routine and music choice in his last Olympia in 2007. This was most certainly not his most dominant win( 2003) nor his best phisique (99 -bigger more separated quads, wider lats, bigger delts and no gyno) but it was , along the 2001 AC his best ever condition. That begs the question, is a bb best ever condition necessarily his best ever look?This is where bb is at its most subjective. 99 review should be fun to do as there are 2 different tapes available( Russian version and Weider version) and more pics too, and it had better lighting( maybe best ever). PS.now that i think about it Ronnie seems to look not as impressive in footage.He also tends to look bigger than he really is by himself-having a small head, joints and round muscle bellies with genetically good separation does that.

    "PS.now that i think about it Ronnie seems to look not as impressive in footage.He also tends to look bigger than he really is by himself-having a small head, joints and round muscle bellies with genetically good separation does that." pretty much the reverse for Yates, he doesn't shine until you put him next to others and then you really see just how wide and big he was. A 280 Nasser couldn't do crap against him (size and width wise obviously) so I don't see why a Coleman would (given that he looks narrow as hell next to Nasser in this very comparison). There's an ongoing misconception that Ronnie was extremely wide but that's not true. He WAS wide, but he was no Paul Dillet that's for sure. Put him next to these guys and he'd be behind Yates and Nasser for sure. Yates also looks much much better on footage than he does on photos. I have rarely found a photo that does him justice and looks as good or comparable to the footage version.

    At the end of day Nasser was too outspoken for his own good, and was punished because if it with his controversial placings, and imo rightly so. When you are Mr Olympia you are representing the brand, every bodybuilder knows this and understands you not only have to have the best physique but also be the best ambassador you can be, unfortunately Nasser didn't give a fuck about "policy" and what was expected of him as a professional so this went against him. I know this sounds unfair but it's business and its just the way it is unfortunately, he was too arrogant for his own good, people say his back was his weakest body part, I think it was his lips.

In other words his relaxed pose probably looked very similar to when he was posing. Standing next to Ronnie even though he easily matched him in size if not bigger Ronnie's muscles moved in his muscle bellies was like nothing anyone had seen up until that point. They had to give it to him. Nasser probably could have been a several time Mr Olympia winner if you didn't try to enhance his physique and go get too carried away.
