    His 8 pack of abdominals and best standing relaxed pose alone deserved the Mr. Olympia title. Nasser is the bodybuilder who achieved the perfect balance ever of Mass and aesthetic lines. His legs could have been a bit longer..but other than that, he was a mass monster with fantastic lines.

    I'm sorry but Nasser did not deserve this. Dorian won because he was the best up there that night. Was he at his all-time best? No but he was still superior to everybody on stage just like Kevin levrone and flex Wheeler said Dorian was so dominant from the front lat spread the rear backlat spread the side tricep. These were poses that he just could not be beat on anything where his back was showing it was lights out. Nobody could touch him even in '97. He was still so superior to everybody else. As far as that dry hard granite look. I'm sorry I'm not even sure NASser should have finished second

  • @85mcarnold

    @85mcarnold

    5 жыл бұрын

    byarish I’ve been saying that instead of the judges giving a straight first through last for each competitor and instead ranking each competitor for every mandatory pose for this very reason. Currently guys only get compared to other guys in the same callout, so you are correct that when someone loses by a longshot they aren’t penalized. But with this proposal to rank each mandatory pose, a guy who wins 7 poses but comes in 10th in his worst pose (17 points) would lose to someone who took 2nd in every pose (16 points). That can’t happen with the current system.

  • @dj_m19

    @dj_m19

    Жыл бұрын

    that's not how it works in a lineup, Nasser could easily win 3 poses against Yates but also lose all of those poses to the next few guys, which takes him down a peg. Yates could lose those 3 poses against Nasser but beat some other guys in those same poses. That's how a lineup works, it's not a "1v1" contest like on youtube that we are accustomed to. In the end it evens out, Yates won 5 poses in 1997 which even if he got absolute sh%t on by Nasser in the remaining 2, Nasser himself got sh%t on in those poses. Think abs and thighs, Nasser may win it against Yates yet he loses it pretty convincingly to Levrone and Ray. Or the side chest to Levrone. Or the back poses to Ray. Nasser himself got schooled from the back, if you think he narrowly lost the back poses then you're in denial

    Great video and analysis as always. You were once again as objective as it was possible. And that case you've made in the end about politics, Fux and Coleman...so true. However I have one thing to notice and that is Nasser's lower body conditioning from the back. I think he had an excellent hamstring, incredibly huge and it showed adequate amount of detail. Dorian was great from the back and I give him the general conditioning over Nasser, but his flow, shape and incredible flaws all around made him having a way worse package than the poor old Professor. I always thought that Nasser was one of the most aesthetic mass monsters, even pretty aesthetic regardless of weight. And finally: regardless of eras and preferences, the front double bicep IS the most important, iconic and defining pose in bodybuilding, no matter whether you are an amateur, pro, in the 60s, late 90s or 2010s. Every pro bodybuilder should have at least a decent front double, and everyone who has ever flexed in front of the mirror or on the beach: it was a front double 95% of the time! You just can't crown a guy whose worst pose is that. Shows are won from the back...but that is because most pros are decent from the front so you have to make a difference from the rear.

Yates front double was awful after 93’ despite his lats and hard quads. If he takes 4 of the 7 mandatory poses and the side chest and AB’s and thigh are close, the only pose that’s lights out is Nassers front double. Dorian wins this show and the judges got it right. One of your best videos. So many people just give a default win to Dorian on the front lat spread without taking a more in depth look. But the FLS is about as much about the lats as the back double bicep is about the biceps. It’s still important, but the chest and shoulders probably play a bigger role in creating that look of width and thickness. And love how you brought up Ronnie and Jean-Pierre Fux getting screwed in the judging. How does one guy who is all back get 1st when another who is all back get 9th?

    Very good video. I absolutely agree. Sometimes we get too stuck on looking at individual parts and conditioning and stuff for a pose and struggle to pick one.. but then you remind yourself to step back and just ask "who overall just looks better in this pose?" and then it's often pretty damn obvious... that was the case for Nasser here. I agree that someone who just overall looks like Dorian there, shouldn't place high. You can't skate by with a bad looking body overall, just because technically the criteria allows for it lol. That's terrible. They gotta start looking at the overall picture a bit more. If a guy has a giant bloated gut... like come on.. the Olympia champ should at least look good overall. And not win because technically the criteria still allows them to. But even with the criteria the way it was/is.. he still shouldn't have won.. it still doesn't make sense.

He was 'taught' to do this when he was starting as a teenager by a guy in either Germany or Switzerland... when he found out that he was doing it wrong, he was in such a habit of doing it, he kept repeating it year after year. He had SO much potential. It sucks that he couldn't break that habit. He should have enlisted the help of 'The Chad...as Nichols was working with guys in the mid 90's.

    Yeah it depends how exactly they judge them. If they just count poses and not margin of victory per pose, then you could make an argument for Yates. His conditioning was still the best and he masked his torn arm well in every shot except the FBD. But his symmetry and midsection were pretty awful at this show. He was too flawed to win IMO.

    If I was judging this competition I would have had Dorian Yates probably 5th or 6th this year. He had multiple torn muscles, a bloated stomach, and his conditioning didn't look as good a it used to. For Dorian to compete especially as a returning champ and giving him the victory on top of that is so so embarrassing and such a major offence to the sport of Bodybuilding as a whole. I'm sure that the audience members and Dorian's fellow competitors were very disappointed with the final outcome. Without a doubt Nasser El Sombaty deserved to win the 1997 Mr. Olympia plus Shawn, Levrone, and Lee Priest to beat Dorian. Instead what maybe should of happened is, the Olympia organization should have had Dorian Yates Guest posing at the 1997 Olympia and presenting the title of the 1997 Mr as crazy as that sounds. The 1997 Mr. Olympia belongs to Nasser El Sombaty.

He knew it was a lucky win, and got out before his record was tarnished. Unbeatable at his best, but that was 1 year only. In 1994 he tore his left bicep, and although he looked pretty good in 1995 and 1996, he then tore his left bicep in 1997 and that was the end.

    Pretty good analysis. I too have Yates winning the 2 back poses and side triceps and Nasser front double , abs & thigh and side chest with the FLS debatable.Maybe the judges gave it to Yates because it was his signature pose?Nasser looked amazing in the FLS in 96 too and i'm positive he didn't beat Yates in it, yes Yates was better there but you get the idea. Also glad you noticed how insane Dorian's back relaxed was, it was imo the best ever, better than Ronnies. Sorry Ron but oversized calves is better than oversized glutes, on a male bodybuilder at least. However, like most analysis you forgot 2 poses that Dorian always beat Nasser in- the 2 relaxed from the side shots. Dorian was way thicker and denser and had more depth in those 2 than Nasser always.He did explain how he won those 2 several times in recent interviews. Nasser for a 270-280 lb man was notoriously thin and shallow in the torso from the side.He looked like he had no traps or lat thickness and his rib cage wasn't as good. Now If Yates won the 2 relaxed shots besides the rear relaxed, that means he won the symmetry round 3-1 , yeah I know it sounds ludicrous but its the truth. And with a 4-3 win ( or loss) in the Muscularity round, the 7 mandatories, if we do the math it's either 6-5 or 7-4 to Yates. It might be shocking but its simple math. However I think we shouldn't just look at the 11 poses, because the posing round and posedown were equally important in teh scoring back then. Remember Ronnie lost the symmetry and muscularity rounds to Cutler in 01 but won the posedown and posing round so he ultimately won ?that may very well be the case here. I cant find the official scorecard for this show, but Yates won all rounds with perfect scores.He has a 5 in the posedown and a 5 in the posing round. The scorecard is on the back of the DVD but i cant zoom it out to properly see the scores for the top 6 guys, sorry. As for my opinion overall, Yates was at his worst by far here.Nasser was huge but not as conditioned in certain areas, but then again Yates wasn't as shredded as usual either-still better overall condition than Nasser. It could have gone to Nasser, but I can totally see how Yates still barley won going through the poses. Maybe the ifbb ad some bias against Nasser-being from Yugoslavia( how many Americans even heard of that little country), or considering he had been disqualified for diuretics the year before?just saying... Here is what Peter McGough( who is sligthly biased towards Yates obviously) said in the report Yates and El Sonbaty represented the battle for first place , and many observers were surprised to learn that Dorian took straight firsts throughout the contest. They thought Nasser had won or at least had forced a closer finish. The consternation can perhaps be explained by one simple fact : From the front , Nasser looks better than Dorian , and when the duo was not involved in comparisons and was just standing in line , Nasser was constantly presenting his best side , while Dorian wasn't . Compounding this state of affairs was the reality that the reigning Mr Olympia didn't help his case by relaxing his midsection when he was back in line. His midsection , compared to Nasser's clear-cut eight-pack , couldn't help but incite unfavorable observation . The bottom line was that for the better part of two hours Nasser faces the audience showing his physique to its best advantage , while the reverse was true for Dorian. When the two were compared , Nasser took the front double biceps and abs-and-thighs poses , but as soon as they turned to the side , Dorian's greater development , thickness and detail overshadowed Nasser , and when the champion's back came into play , it was all over. But Yates' overall superiority was only apparent in six comparisons ( three in the relaxed round , and three in the muscularity round ) that he and El Sonbaty were involved in , which accounted for about eight minutes of the two-hour prejudging. Head-to-toe , and when all the angles had been considered , Yates was the clear winner

  • @Tomn8er

    @Tomn8er

    Yeah I couldn't find even a single pic of them in the side relaxed. Was thinking about it last night though about how Dorian could've won by virtue of the side relaxed shots... and how stupid is it that the left and right quarter turns should count the same as two of the mandatories?? I mean it's essentially just one pose, because it's gonna be a pretty rare situation where a guy wins the left quarter turn but loses the right! It'd be like if they made you do the side chest or side tri from both sides and counted it twice. Makes no sense. IMO the quarter turns should be weighted only 50% as much, because they're not as important for bodybuilding. Make each relaxed shot count for .5, not 1. Anyway just goes to show the problem with judging a show this way.
