*Hey Everyone!* - PLEASE READ We are getting a lot of messages about the Okupas and our personal story in our newest video. We did not want to scare you, we just wanted you to be aware. Our story may not be common, but we thought it will be good for you to have a knowledge of it. (It's a crazy story) There are relatively NEW LAWS now that expedite the process to evict anyone that illegally breaks into your home, especially your prime residence. We have a Security system that is connected to a security center. If there is a break-in, the police will be dispatched immediately. You can do the same, and it will give you some peace of mind in case you are concerned. Here in Spain, it is MUCH, MUCH, MUCH more common for a squatter to break into a vacant house, a seldom used vacation home or bank-owned foreclosed property, where they can go months or years without being discovered! They do not want to deal with Police. There are a lot of great neighborhoods here in Valencia and the crime rate is very, very low compared to any big US city. Many apartment complexes here also have a doorman, a concierge or extra security. The positives of Spain and Valencia vastly outweigh the negatives. We are grateful to live here and LOVE our life. The sunny days, beautiful beaches, delicious food, kind people, and a really relaxed way of life. DO NOT let the thought of a squatter ruin your vision of living in this wonderful country. Plus, you already have friends here:) Keep that dream alive! Thank you all for your support, Josh & Vicky

It was not only that mistake (not the case, but to generalize it). + 1 Construction regulations for modern buildings here are demanding, and those rich neighborhood downtown palaces have the higher 50s building standards, but Cabanyal was a poor fisherman neighborhood and old buildings usually use tiles for isolation instead of double brick wall or other techniques. +2 it is not usual individual AC cold/hot in every room because central gas-water or modern electric "blue" heat is better and cheaper and even if you choose AC a central one is cheaper and better than one for each room if you are remodeling. +3 Valencia in winter is colder near the sea. And you feel cold if you live here. But anyone can read minimum temperatures 5 -15 C 41 -59 F. Some winter days you can even take sunbathes at peak sun hours. When people come in winter from any northern parts of Europe included Spain, love our "not winter" temperatures.

I want to travel quite a bit when I do make it to Europe and the last thing I want to worry about is if someone has taken my home from me when I come back from traveling. Buildings wall thickness vary, some are very thin some others newer are not that thin…the same goes with how cold is inside. My house is extremely warm, mind you…stays also warm in the summer, not so good. Okupas are not that common..although it does happen but rarely. you were just unlucky. It’s not cold at all here compared to most places! But I do agree that it is kind of damp and houses are not prepared for winter. Old houses are worse for that and people here buy heaters to use in winter and/or a dressing gown plus blanket for the sofa 😂 But hey…how many places get 23 degrees Celsius in January like it was today? Forgot to mention the washing machine and dryer. It’s Europe. Dryers are rare. My washer is outside in the service balcony (and I have a bigger 2nd balcony) my washer is small and doesn’t dry clothes (you don’t want one of those as clothes come out totally wrinkled to the point even an iron won’t fix them) used them in London and Paris. So you have to hang them to dry. And good luck finding a dishwasher. Not a problem as I used my dishwasher as a drying rack anyway. My aunt had a huge washer AND dryer in Italy and I told her I’ve never seen a separate dryer in a European home. She said, that’s where I keep my pots and pans and I looked through the glass door, and sure enough, filled with pots and pans!

But if you own a flat or house for rent , or for going on weekends or whatever , and you do not have your legal residence in that second house , and a group of okupas arrives ... you have a big problem. Remember , you are fully and fast covered by the law and the police in Spain if you have your legal residence in that place . It does not matter if you rent or buy . It only depends if you have your residence. And it do not change depending of the colour of the nacional goverment . It has been the same now , 5 years ago , 10 years ago , 20 years ago...

There is a solution: PAY for it. Here in Spain there are a lot of services that make the paperwork for you, "gestorias" and if you value your time a little are very cheap usually under 50€ or if it is a long package under 100 € (one hour of handyman is about 50€, and "gestorias" have lawyers and economists in charge). You can even ask for a recommendation and the same officers will point you to several that work there more. Most of the paperwork can be done online, but those "Gestorias" have all the software needed to do it all in minutes, knowing all the tricks.

We also have good friends that will stop by, open the place up for us! The process for the visa is pretty straight forward as long as you have all the documentation. It was more stressful for us because we lived in Denver and if we missed a document it could be very hard to just get back to the consulate with what they need. We actually used an attorney to review all documents and help us with the consulate. We don't want to scare you away, its a great life here once you cut through the red tape! Thank you for telling the truth. I'm Spanish and I can guarantee that OKupas/ squatters are a huge and real problem in Spain. Right now in Spain criminals have more rigths than normal people. Many honest families and people are suffering a lot because of this. They're losing their homes and watching criminals live in them without being able to do anything. And watching the goverment protect those criminals who stole their homes more than them (the víctims). It's totally insane, and although it seems unreal, it's completely true. You should know and be a aware of this cause this could happen to you. This problem is because of the comunist party, Who unfortunatly has dragged the socialist party into these horrible laws.

Javier is right. But elections in Spain are poinless as electoral fraud is around since year 2000 at least as nobody actually count the votes but a privat company and is all computerized. The same day of elections we know the results (totally unrealistic) Basically the ones that count the votes are the ones that decide what government will be. People in Spain live in pure ignorance and our society also is not educated to really flight for our rights. We depend so much in political parties to take some sort of action and media doesn't help neither as media is totally polarized politically and they are controlled by political parties...

Okupas is not a statistically* big problem, but alarm companies, pay media to spread it and make you buy alarms. There are 3 Million houses in Spain out of the market, and squatters usually look to occupy those and not family owned places. What your neighbor experienced probably was because of something different, as there are "revenge squatting" too for many reasons, but not because of living reasons. In fact a usual squatter do not want to be identified and do not want to have trouble with their neighbors. * 14.621 in 2019 (with 3 million unused houses) "As homes foreclose in U.S., squatters move in" was published by reuters in 2008 and it was also fake news in statistical terms

Hi Miguel, I would say statistically you are correct, and squatters would prefer a vacant, or bank owned property that reduces their chance of a run in with home owners, a good security system or police. This video is not to scare people away, it's just an awareness of a problem that homeowners can incur, especially foreigners that have never heard of such a thing. As far as my neighbor, I'm not sure, but I know he is gone a lot, so the property could look vacant. Thanks for watching and your comment.

@@ACoupleofNomads Hi guys! You don't have to apologize for saying the truth. Miguel is not correct. There is a huge problem in Spain with OKupas/squatters. Okupas are not afraid of the police as the socialist/comunist goverment protects them. They do whatever they want cause here in Spain criminals have more rigths than the owners, and they know nothing is going to happen to them. You can't even rent your house for fear of losing your house. This country is the only one where this thing happens and it's incredible to hear people say to you that you're wrong. If the house is your "Habitual House" the police expel the squatters in 24 hours, the problem of the occupation comes when the houses are not well "Registered" as your property or it is not your "Official" address, if this is fulfilled the OKUPA commits a crime (Morada Rise) punishable by 2 years in jail.
