Conclusion: all Spanish children are always glued to their I-pads and phones. Right! Children mostly interact socially in Spain. If you want an illustration: go to Madrid's Plaza del Dos de Mayo and observe the pupils of the school nearby during their lunch break.

Nothing makes me happier than seeing Americans living abroad and loving it. We Americans have that saying here "the greatest country in the world". Well, we know this isn't true. In fact, it sounds immature and it doesn't exist anywhere. I think people here don't realize the tension and stress the average person lives with. I've only visited Barcelona in Spain and loved it but I know the south is beautiful. I hope you're still enjoying living there.

Spain is great, the people are so friendly/respectful and welcoming. No aggression/violence.The only downside which you get used too is the administration which is a nightmare. Been here 5 years and will never return to UK. The best place on earth!

@@enzoh4385 that’s right we do and I don’t mind at all. I’ve seen many folks from Canada and the UK traveling to the US just to get simple treatments because otherwise they have to wait 4 to 5 months or the care is subpar.

I lived in eleven countries and visited over 80. Spain is the greatest country in the world to live, I have not doubts. By the way, the food is AMAZING! Where did you eat!?

@@ruk2227 where you wanna go? Madrid and Barcelona compared to Cádiz and León is a huge difference. Just like Leeds to Oxford. But about €500-800 single apartament in Madrid usually a little cheaper than Barcelona. Then €300-500 in cadiz or leon.

@@ruk2227 that's mainland Africa, I've found out so no idea about the culture, I know it's part of Spain but will be different I imagine. Supposedly in expensive areas around 700 in less expensive areas around 500. It's just a simple Google search man.

I am originally from the Philippines and currently living in Australia, but I am planning to move to Spain since my heritage is Spanish and to improve my Spanish language since the Philippines was named in honour of King Felipe of Spain

Tony James Spain has the world best diet (many scientific studies say that) and that is one of the reasons why Spain has the highest life expentancy just behind Japan (and many studies say that by 2040 Spain will be number one). Have a nice day, Mr. Food Expert.

@@lourdessimon7813 Of course: 1) Research the public transport around the place where you will go to live, because is more easy use it than rent a car and find a place for it. 2) If you going to live there more than a few months, you must to register yourself in a document, "El padrón". It's essential for you. I know you can find a good explanation in English here in KZread. 3) I recommend you use a bike in Málaga, it is cheap and easy to use. If you don't have one, don't worry, you can hire one for the publics ones. Málaga is a great place for use it bc the good weather and the great bikes ways. 4) Take care about the hot in summer, specially when the wind blows is "terral", from the South. This wind is from Sáhara, and is very dry, sandy and hot, dangerous if blows some days one to another. 5) I'm sure you will enjoy Málaga in a lot of ways, but I hope you speak Spanish, is important to integrate even in this area you going to find a lot of English speakers.

I've lived in Catalonia for the past 20 years. I miss some things about Southern California where I'm from but I am happy. I have healthcare, good food, good wine and have made good local friends. I am grateful for having the opportunity to live in this part of the Iberian peninsula

I lived in Puerto de Santa Maria for 4 years & absolutely loved it. We plan to go back permanently ASAP. ❤️🇪🇸

I’m so happy to hear you say you like it there. We lived there for three years & we didn’t want to leave. We were the only Americans in our neighborhood & the Spaniards took us in and literally made us their family. Your video made me happy! We lived by Aqua Sherry the water park and Prica the mall. Miss Spain’s slow life so much. We knew several military families that never left the base & they missed so much. We lived in Naples, Italy & The Azores before Spain.

Spain is not tropical tho, that why game of thrones and many other films are filmed here just because how rich our geography is, we have snow, rain, dessert, mountains, plains etc... we have 4 seasons and many different climates in all our geography

I saw a doco on Spains wster crisis abd hiw ut qill need to build more coastline desalination plants. Tourism as wondergul as it is for the economy is a double edged sword as it sucks so much fresh water. If the the tourism increases and they have other dry year they'll be shipping water in by tanker.

I was brought up in Spain (the island of Mallorca) way back from 1956 onwards - before package tourism was invented and the hoards started arriving. It was a simple life - the beaches were virtually empty in summer - no concrete apartments and hotels. The morality of the local people was amazing - no crime, no divorces, happy and hardworking people. I miss those days - however, I also lived in Madrid during the 60’s near the Retiro park... bustling and lively. Everyone is open and friendly in Spain. Children are considered with great affection. The only thing I didn’t like was people’s treatment of animals - but that has now improved enormously. I hated bullfights, but my parents made me go - but it was all part of the colour of Spain. If I lived there now I would live in Madrid, but also buy a little place by the beach in Mallorca - preferably away from Palma and based in the north east and north west of the island. I speak Spanish fluently and also Mallorquin (which is similar to Catalan). Espana, te amo, tierra con alma.

Where are you now? Will you make it back for retirement?

In Spain they have a samaritan law which makes it illegal not to stop and help someone in need.. You have to remember the siesta, everything except the big stores close from 2pm until 5pm which you have to get used to. Up side is they can stay open until 8 or 9 pm, especially in the summer.. Also everything is shut on sunday... If your a single guy there's beautiful women everywhere.. The best place to live....

As a spaniard I have to say the "siesta" thing is a myth. Yes, small and medium shops close from 2 or 3 PM to 4 or 5 PM, but not to have a nap, but because people go to eat, if they can they go home and eat there. Consider it a big break to eat. Its an cultural thing I suppose. Sure there are people that takes naps... but its not he majority. :D

Lived in El Puerto de Santa María for 9 years, Im spanish and my best friend back at school was Jessica, we were 8 years old and she lived in Rota with her american family original from Oregon. Now she lives in Austin and cant wait to see her again, she showed me some words and expressions in english that I will always remember as my first slang skills. Que tal friends, one of the most striking things about Spain, even in the big cities, is that you will catch whole extended families, grandparents, cousins, babies out on the weekend just strolling and enjoying life, Germany and Italy also...its sad as an American that we absolutely cannot be bothered to even come together a couple of times a year and our family outings usually consist in going to some crappy mall for a couple of hours. Also, the POLICE in Spain are so cool, the exact opposite of American police, they are actually there to help you with 0% attitude its amazing. Sometimes are really feel like there is something collectively wrong with the American mind.

Thank you for this video, it’s refreshing to see Americans seeing other realities than theirs. It’s obvious that when you travel abroad they can see real freedom and it’s real meaning. A country without weapon is safe and lighter And it’s a place where you can be yourself an experience culture without fear. I wish that more Americans would travel because it’s really eye-opener for them.

Glad you have enjoyed your stay in Spain. I love Mexican food too but I have to say i Spanish food to me is one of the best cuisines. I will be moving to Andalucia in the next couple of years and although now I do experiment with Spanish cooking (I try to find recipes cooked by an actual Spaniard) when I get there I am sure I will learn alot more from the locals. I experiment with my cooking and would put my own touch but first and foremost I like to learn the authentic way of cooking a dish. I am from the UK. I am a coffee drinker too and love Spanish coffee. I would be very happy to live in a Spanish community. I don't mind some mix with a few immigrants from other countries as I even in the UK like a mix. It is nice to get to know people from other countries However I want to immerse myself in the Spanish way of life. I will still be an immigrant but want to mix with a local community of native Spaniards as much as possible as I want it to be my home not just somewhere I happen to be living for now. It is not a good time for me now as I have to be practical but I look forward to my dream. I know there are negatives no matter what country you move to but the more I read about Spain the more I think I should have been born Spanish. The food, the coffee, the people I love . I am a practical person and do a lot of research and look at all aspects pros and cons so I do not see things through rose tinted spectacles. I do think I will fit in very quickly indeed. PS Tapas is not the food. It is dish size like a little taster. I think the name means a cover or lid and one of suggested origins which makes sense to me is the land workers would cover their drink with a small plate of cheese or ham to keep the insects, dirt etc out of. I have done that camping in the UK so I guess with the meaning of the word that is why that origin makes sense to me :) Then media racion (half a portion) then racion (full portion) I think. I am sure you tried some main meals too. I am sorry you were not so keen however we are all different and I do not expect everyone to have the same tastes as me. Live and let live I say :) PS Re your comment on packaged foods, what is with the obsession in the US to buy ready grated packaged cheese instead of blocks? It takes seconds to grate fresh. Sadly this is coming over here to the UK too. I was in a popular supermarket and saw a whole shelf with different ready grated packages all sizes. We used to just see the odd package of grated parmesan. I just looked at a local shop worker and shook my head and said why? He agreed with me. It is strange. Everything packaged and instant. How lazy does someone have to be not to grate their own cheese :) I am from an era when one would go to the greengrocer (fruit and veg shop) and would bring a shopping bag (not plastic bags) and would put all our fruit and veg in loose (sort it out at home) or at the most put some to keep seperate in a paper bag. I would love to go back to that way of shopping.

Will be visiting the Mediterranean soon Turkey, Greece even Israel. But Spain is on my bucket list. My ancestors were from Catalonia.

Here in Holland the trains are also so expensive. I'm looking to move to Valencia and was shocked to see we could get a round trip to ibiza and Mallorca for 20 euro's a person. It's insanity but I really can't wait for that. Spain look awesome for living in.

@Captain Brandon Cinema Lover I can believe that. I don't absolutely hate the US but from what I know (family living there), it's anything but perfect. It's just really sad to see that people go broke because of healthcare and how people's life's get ruined by violence and crime. Besides that I really dislike the patriotism, it's a little sickening 🙈 there's definitely good parts about the US, but I understand why you'd like to leave. The Netherlands does have a lot of good things, it really does, the Healthcare is great, the job opportunities and all the benefits that we have here, when needed, it's really helpful and good but there's a lot to dislike for me. I am the type of person that loves nature and dislikes a lot of people (😅), I'm very much an introvert, and that's really hard here. So many people in such a small country. We are so lucky with where we live, a lovely 3 bedroom house with 2 gardens, in a good neighbourhood with a fairly decent amount of nature for the country, but still, it's not for me. It's so hard to get away from people and to find nice nature. For some people, this country is great but sadly not for all. I also have a health condition that gets worse in cold weather, so that's another reason for me to move, a warmer climate haha. There's so many lovely countries though, we were thinking about a whole bunch but finally decided on Spain. It's not all set in stone just yet because it's still a few years away, but Spain sounds great to me haha. Just like every place it has their cons, but also a lot of pro's.

That's what i liked about Spain, its safe.

Awesome video, alot of insight and cool topics, I was born and raised in California and when I visited Granada in Southern Spain, I was amazed and shocked to experience the slower pace of life and how laid back and relaxed everyone is even more so than California , also very safe, I could be walking back home to my spanish host family's house from a bar at 2am, no worries at all and I agree you have to get used to the slower pace of life but it is amazing once you get used to it. I feel you on the Mexican food lol, I went to a few Mexican resturants in Spain, nothing compared to USA, let alone México. Although you can get some what similar food in Andalucía with the moorish influence, they have amazing dishes with Lamb, rice and pita bread.

I was stationed in Rota for 8 years loved every second of it and now stationed in Italy and I miss my home

Gracias! I lived in Spain and traveled widely too on other occasions, including visiting relatives in Asturias, where my mother was born. The best food is in the north, from Galicia across to Catalonia. País Vasco is among the best culinary delights! It was such a delight to hear your impressions. Buen viaje!

Man, the trains, in general, are not expensive except the High-speed trains. If you buy any other tickets for a different kind of lines you'll be able to see a big difference. And even those trains are not as expensive as many people say if you think they just take 500 o 600 km away in 2,5 hours without having to pass all those processes you need to do to travelling by plane. You even save a lot of time because High-speed trains leave you in the center of the cities. You don't have to travel a lot of times till airports or from them to the cities. It's a modern and safe way to travel among cities which are 500 to 1000 km away.

I see what you mean about Spanish food. I've both lived and been a tourist in Spain, and I noticed that when just visiting I quickly got sick of the food I was eating in restaurants (largely tapas and stereotypical dishes). But when you live in Spain you can really enjoy the different regional cuisine - Basque springs to mind!

I lived in Madrid for five years and I agree with you. I always felt so safe. I loved the fresh Spanish food. For some reason, I never found a good Mexican restaurant or good Chinese or Italian foods. But every other country is well represented. Fresh food is right!

I am Puertorican too and really thinking on retiring to Spain. With a Puerto Rico citizenship certificate Spain will grant you Spanish citizenship in 2 years and not the standard 10 years. The more videos and commentaries on living in Spain I see the more I want to live in our motherland, after all I am supposed to be 60% Spaniard :)

OK that sounds super cool and all, but how about housing costs? how about rent? do every young person there lives with their parents until their 40s? that's not living life either... gotta have independence... or am I missing something, legit curiosity coming from scandinavia, maybe there are some different aspects

@@FeelingShred Everything was lost when we joined the EU. The country began to be known for Europe and its vultures. There has been so much speculation with tourism and with the construction sector, that now our new generations cannot, in any way, live better than their parents. Expenses are impossible, no matter how hard you work, salaries are immoral and are not enough for anything. Spain, as we know it, is going to shit, thanks to our politicians and the banks of Europe. The only thing we have left are the simple things in life. Friends, family, a good meal, talking, dancing ... all that which in most countries is not considered "essential", is implicit in our character, and it is also cheap! ... that's the only thing we have left .

i will retire in 5 years and my wife and i will live in gran canaria (canarian island spain) better weather lower costs and more relaxed people

Good advice here. Especially live in the town with the locals. Visit different regions of Spain, get to the beaches, swim in the Mediterranean sea. Take breaks in Greece, France, Austria. Good fun.

The problem about left turns at 5:14 is known as a spanish turn(atleast here in Sweden). It might seem like a problem and bad infrastructure but it’s actually a really smart solution to reducing the percent of accidents when turning left on highways.

I love seeing my land through your eyes. Many people confuse variety with foreigners. Spain is a nation of countries, many different cultures in any corner. There is only a 10% of foreigners in Spain but the cultural richness itself is huge, or is it that tourists come to Spain only to eat paella and drink sangria?

@@UrquidezFamily since you mentioned the Moors, Paella is an Arabic word, which is whatever remains from different food, you can mix it and make a new dish .

I'm from Austin. I broke my femur in Seville. The ambulance, operation, four days in the hospital, and a walker came to $4500. When Spanish people go to the hospital, the whole family shows up. They keep a party atmosphere so nobody worries. When they leave, the whole family chips in on the bill.. Women kept straightening the blankets on my bed. I checked into a hostel in Seville. I made friends who worked in an Irish pub. I forgot to leave for 17 years. I'll be back.

I lived in El Puerto de Santa Maria and enjoyed every minute of it. I felt save everywhere and I do agree with everything this couple has said. If I could live there I would.

Thanks so much for the great information. My wife and I are looking at retirement there. I've been to Madrid briefly in the military and felt at home and comfortable there.

We are definitely considering living in Spain.

Spanish food it not all tapas! Everyone would get sick of tapas after awhile. I encourage you to try food from other parts of Spain :) Nice video and thank you for sharing your experiences.

It's all about paella dude. Paella is really good. Paella > risotto

My husband and I lived in Mexico for almost 8 years. The culture, families doing things all together, etc. the freshness of the seafood and fruits etc. all are as you describe in Spain. Transportation still iffy, lol. And the waiters NEVER gave us our bill until we asked for it. They NEVER rushed us through a meal. And the pace was slow. I learned to speak Spanish living there (I first took 3 years of it YEARS AGO in High School but learned much more by using it) Good luck in your travels! (In Las Vegas NV now!)

I really miss Rota.. I was station here early 2000's and lived in Puerto de Santa Maria. Great experience!

Yes everything is cheaper but the wage is lower also.

I live in Los Angeles and its very common to have a low wage but high expenses. so it still seems better to have a lower wage with low expenses. more balanced.
