When Paloma cried on the perch and multiple adult females come to comfort her is such a lovely look into the nature of this species. You don't see this in many other non human primates like macaque. I just love these guys.

That was incredible how many of the monkeys came (literally) running to her aid when Paloma was alone on the perch and started crying! Amazing! Thank you so so much for all that you and the entire crew there, all involved, are doing for these abandoned monkeys. An absolute blessing, the second chance y'all are giving these incredible creatures. Makes my heart so happy to see them truly cared for, in every sense of the word. 😍🙏 Keep it up!

Freya was hilarious to me in this video! Just like a typical baby or toddler, she does everything to demonstrate the OPPOSITE of what you were trying to show her doing. Lol. She feigns sleep, puts her hand in her mouth, smacks the bottle down and hides behind her blanket all while you’re trying to show how well she can still eat with thrush. 😂 I love her little defiant personality. ☺️

I used to work at a school for the blind and saw this condition several times. My youngest brother, who had cerebral palsy, also had it. I hope that she does well with the troop that she gets included in. Bless you all for all you do. Thank you.

Both the females wanted Vera. I think Acorn was actually testing Vera by touching her so many times. Vera would not submit to the touch, so Acorn tried to get her to calm down and submit by holding her to the ground. Other animals do this. Vera looked up for a clue and Acorn lip smacked to her. Vera is having none of it. But Acorn really wants her. It looks like Vera is too young yet. Good luck Vera!

One Guy Online yeah I agree. Often the moms get worried when a baby reacts so negatively to their advances most likely cause in the wild it would mean the baby still has a mom who will come by any time to fight off the invader. Something else that is interesting though is many monkeys smelled Vera and every time they did the did not like what they smelled. Unfortunately I don’t think it’s age related, usually the younger they are the more willing they are to accept. I think the real issue is that Vera was so young when she arrived and she was injured for the first two weeks and getting constant human care and so I think she’s more humanized than would generally be liked and it’s confusing for her, the strongest indicator of this is her incessant desire for blankets rather than a monkey mom.

I’m rewatching the old seasons because these little guys brighten my day! I will say though I wonder why when the babies have thrush and have a hard time eating why they don’t try feeding them through a syringe like they do when some babies first get there and are either to weak or injured to suckle from the bottle. I know they want them to get used to another way of feeding...I’m sure they have their reasons and obviously they are pros and know what they are doing but I was just curious.

Baby season usually makes thrush something more common thing to seeing in poor monkeys :( since theres a lot more monkeys around expect in an increase of exposure and contamination happens more so due to their instincts /natural anxious behavior, they always find themselves choosing or rather after for the usual... body contact and oral stimulation(eating and suckling) stressed out orphans especially FRESH orphans unto road to recovery (rather be malnutrition, wounds, or trauma of a heart💔/trauma) fight their psyche mainly from adjusting and that' usually why it's vital to distract them from depression .. w love n cuddles :)

As I watch these monkey mothers pass on Vera over and over I can't help but wonder if they can possibly smell a baby's parental line, and therefore smell some kind of birth rank perhaps?? The moms walk over to Vera, lift up her tail and smell her, and then walk away. Sometimes Vera approaches an adult and they very forcefully physically hit, scratch, and bite her to drive her away. It's as if they are saying: "LOWBORN! GET AWAY FROM ME YOU LOWBORN!" A similar situation happened with Dixie to a degree. She seemed to match up with adoptive mother Elsie at first, until Elsie changed her mind and decided Darcy was a better choice. Many factors went into Elsie's choice of Darcy over Dixie. Size, temperament, and other stuff all went into her choice I'm sure. It's possible Darcy's birth mother was simply higher born than Dixie's was, I guess. There is also the possibility that Vera and Dixie had some other kind of illness or wrong behavior working against them?

Of course many different neurological condition present with some visual disability and odd or rapid eye movements like that, nystagmus its called. On thins about "blind" does not mean that some things cannot be seen such as lights and shown od extreme nearsightedness, narrow vision and so on. She is certainly showing nystagmus that would be associated with a neurological issue, But I am not sure she is "totally" blind which is what people outside the medical field think blindness means. I caught this is the first close up of her in the video, she was able to stop the eye movement for a couple of seconds twice while you were filming which means that something caught her visual attention, a shadow of someone moving about or something was moved that let more light in the room, anything like that and when she had some stimulus to focus on she could control her eye movements to do that. Not sure if that means she has really usable vision or not, but some individuals that can only see shadows and light will tell you it can be put to use. How much and if it will aid her in some what is difficult to tell, and often young born with only light/dark vision stop using it as babies as it gets then no reward and while they may grow up with still some vision because they never use ed as a baby it was not something they could adapt it to to be useful as an adult. I would consider trying to use 'shaws ' and see if she responds. especially if you call to her when feeding, let's say and then stand in a doorway with the backdrop of sun behind you so that she was seeing a shadow in the light and can associate it with food and get her to look at you and focus on the show in the light . Once you see her rem stop for a few seconds and she appears to focus on you give her the milk.

Pam Duncan she for sure can see shadows and light, but she doesn’t react to visual cues such as presenting her bottle, but it’s fine cause she comes to find it when she wants it and what staff has been trying with her is ringing a bell by her bottle and while she’s drinking so she can associate that sound with the milk.

I don’t understand, Paloma didn’t bond with a specific Mom but went out with Luca and was still alone until she found her place. I thought the point was to bond with foster mom, then go out to the troop. Why was this one handled differently? Is it because she made friends with the Moms? She faired well and I’m sure you kept close eyes on her, and I’m definitely not judging...just curious, for my own knowledge, as to why. BTW, the crunching sounds of them eating in the background are adorable! I giggle every time I hear it! 💙

It all depends on the support of the troop and the interaction, when the yougsters are a bit older they dont really like being held to much, and in certain cases they get on well enough with the troop to be intergrated

Poor Veara, I would scream to If Acorn was coming at me like that to. The crazy thing is Acorn wants Veara and she is screaming, the little boy is OK with Acorn but she don't seem all that interested in him. Acorns the one that kidnapped one of the babies from her brand new foster mother last year, if i remember i think it was one of mrs. Gold's babies? That was last year and she left the poor baby in a tree all by itself and Acorn just took off! I think it's was mrs. Gold who came and got her baby back and out of the tree. I dont know about Acorn though, she seems to really be trying with this little veara. Veara would have quite the life if she goes with Acorn, she will be spoiled for sure! I don't know tho, we will have to see! We got a cliff hanger here! Can't wait till next week!

Bell's story would make great video for everyone to be able to buy...a book would be a great seller too... A funny, but a great story book about keeping your independence l, would be on Vera...have you ever thought about using your still shots to integrate into children's books? Split the profits between you and VFF...

Nope, no way to monitor, or help the baby if need be, also babies wouldn't have access to milk or the feeding cage.

Are you giving the babies any probiotic along with milk/formula? Human babies, especially preemies are very susceptible to thrush and some decent studies showed that premature infants not getting breast milk given a probiotic supplement had a 57% less chance of not getting thrush. Preemie infants that were able to get breast milk consistently had a marked reduction in the chance of getting thrush than did the ones getting formula/probiotics or just formula. It appears that breast milk likely creates an environment in the mouth and gut that prohibits the overgrowth of the normal body fungus that causes thrush and when looking at the numbers the idea that this could be do to a more normal growth of bacteria in the gut that keeps the fungus from over growing. Of course we already knew stress in any animal can damage the immune system and possibly cause the die off of natural bacteria or fungus allowing the other to overgrow and cause disease/illness. We started supplementing both formulas and whole milk given to orphans with small amounts of probiotic according to relative size - did not want to kill off the fungus completely as that would cause other problems when then the bacteria could over grow, just try to get a balance going. Until back in the wild where they were maintaining their own diets we also offer yogurt or other food that supply a good level of probiotics

I honestly have no idea, I'd have to go ask the meds staff, but its hard for me to communicate a message of this detail and to give you the proper response you deserve. I appreciate the fact that you're commenting and supplying your knowledge to the community, sadly I can't really help you here and I wish I could but that side of the care is not my job and I don't want to overstep my bounds in the workplace. If you do have direct questions, concerns or ideas please email Josie@Vervet.za.org, she is head of animal rehabilitation and is co-director of the sanctuary. She will be able to answer any of your questions and take all of your suggestions and have much more detailed and productive dialogue with you than I could ever have regarding the Vervet Monkey Foundations medical and animal husbandry practices. But please feel free to continue commenting and asking questions, I just can't guarantee that I will always have the answers for such detailed inquiries.
