The way I understand things the surrogates naturally prefer the biggest, healthiest, and most well behaved infants to spend their limited resources on. Vera is small, VERY vocal and a generally needy as infants go. She's frequently terrified and screech-'panic'-calls when almost ANY adult monkey even tries to approach her. While this does nothing to help her get adopted it is totally understandable. Vera is probably in a great deal of danger overall. The most dangerous position to be inside any monkey troop is being the smallest, weakest, lowest ranked female infant of the lowest ranked female adult. They have the shortest average lifespan by far. When Acorn inspected Vera last episode she knew that accepting the small and fussy little girl would probably cost her several rank levels down. Acorn wanted to keep the privileges of being a high-ranking female and she had to pass on adopting Vera to do that. I'm anxious to find out where Vera is now! I hope she found someone to love her!

Jessica T I know this is a old comment and video ...I like to rewatch them sometimes! I personally think Vera was so traumatized as a baby losing Her mom...well they all do but maybe hers was really bad and also her first time around a possible surrogate mom Was alpha Acorn and she touched them up due to being alpha and also inexperienced so she held Vera down and sat on her aggressively and Acorn was a big girl ....also I think maybe she put her scent On Vera marking her and makes sense since They would smell her and walk away, which I’ve never seen before and I also haven’t seen a female sit like that before on a baby very possessively, but who knows. I’m just happy she eventually found her spot. 😃 🐵 💗

I would love to do this and help with the baby monkeys I love what you do for them!!!

Yo Kyle...i agree with general consensus...alpha mom sat on Vera so nobody will cross that line of monkey politics.....if washing her doesn't work then u will have to move her to another troop....pair her up with edgar ??? Then he won't be alone in Disneyland...just an idea....love the way Belle sits in the plate so the food doesn't get away....take Dougie's ball away when he's asleep....outta site outta mind hopefully....

Kyle, has Vera been to the vet? Maybe she has something going on that they can detect... An illness or parasites? She's just so sweet it's breaking my heart.

A few months ago, we ended up adopting three kittens. The first two were rescued together, and had fleas, and were too young for flea medication, so we had to give them baths. (They were not fans). The third one was adopted a month later, and she'd been in foster care before we adopted her, so she didn't have fleas, and didn't need the baths. The other two kittens didn't take to her at all. Then, we gave her a bath and they accepted her. I'm not suggesting that Vera needs a bath (though she may smell like Acorn's baby to the other monkeys, since Acorn sat on her :), but since all of the mothers seem to reject her after they smell her, maybe she needs some monkey perfume. Sounds bad, but maybe a little dusting of a possible foster mom's urine or some other scent marker? Edit to add, I know this happened a while ago, so this is too late, but I'm just curious :)

It's interesting the vervet females will let an orphan suckle. Macqaucs don't. Is this usual for this breed of monkey? I find it intriguing that they adopt so redily too.

Aww poor Vera. ☹️ Do you think she could have some kinda internal illness and that’s why the mothers didn’t want to be near her? I pray one of them takes her in. Bell eating was so cute.

Would it be possible to bathe Vera and put her in a different intro enclosure? Maybe some other troupe would want her? If that troupe rejects her then take her to a veterinarian.

what hits home is without your sanctuary and rescue...every single baby we are seeing would be dead. That makes my heart sink. Thank you so much for all you do!

Who on earth could click a thumbs down?? What kind of person does that to a Non profit organization? I know what kind of person does, and I am sure all of you know what kind of people do that as well! Anyways I feel bad for Edger and Vera! I hope Vera will not spend her baby days sitting with a mother who don't care about her. I am sure they will do what is best for the babies so I ain't worried I feel sad that Vera has no momma to hug her. Maybe they will put Edger and Vera together and they can find the mothers that are perfect for them! I was wondering about the males that are in the troupes. I was wondering if they spayed the females and neutered the males, and someone answered me and said they neuter the males. I saw a male in one of the troupes and he was very well endowed and he had those famous blue testicle which did not look neutered at all. I don't know the person who the person was that answered me, i am not even sure if she worked there at VMF bur thanked her anyway. I was hoping I would be enlightened about this situation, seeing how important it is to any enacted vervet male who wants to be able to display his naturally blue testicals. Its very important for the females to see because the bluer the better! What causes the males to achieve this bright beautiful blue is through testosterone and positive endorphins in their brains from grooming and low stress levels. So my question is how do they keep their population controlled? I am curious concidering all the circumstances.

@@lerigby2473 Thank you for that answer. The reason why I was curious is because the happier the males are, the higher levels of testosterone and chemicals which in return, causes bluer testies. Females are by nature attracted to the males with the bluest of testies. It means the male has a good life with less stress because some Alphas don't have a lot of stress. They get the other males to do the dirty work, like the parimeter checks, looking for intruders in their area, and breaking up fights and starting fights. All the while the alpha male sits around getting groomed by all the girls, which makes the alpha pretty lucky and stress free causing that blue hue to happen. If they do give males a visectomy do they stop producing testosterone or does this effect how the alphas are portrayed to the females? Do they still have that blue hue after all of that?

Maybe she even smells like someone's aftershave or perfume? Or some spray around there or someone with medicine or ointment on their hands touched her last? They have a keen sense u know that..I would think the sniff then reject is abnormal for a baby to be rejected so...esp since Vera is such a loive bug.

I know this is a older video and Vera found her spot in a troop, but the more I rewatch this episode and the one before when Acorn claimed her possessively and sat on Vera I think she somehow marked her as hers .....even though she didn’t want her she was punishing Vera for defying her and not being submissive at first like Horst was. If you watch the episode before you will see Vera kept running, screaming and defying Acorns “invitation” to meet her, I don’t believe Vera did it out of defiance but fear , but Acorns lack of experience with babies she took it as disrespectful to her as alpha. Horst pretty much bowed in respect and fear I’m sure but ironically he had no problem getting a mom and she did until they moved her to another enclosure. I’m sure the lower ranking females figured having Vera wasn’t worth the problems they would have in the future with Acorn. I may be wrong but it appeared that way and primates main rule is respect their Alpha and monkeys who rank higher than themselves...but who knows there may be no reason at all.

Are they going to move Vera to a different troop to see if one of the moms in them will want her?

I’m wondering why they hold their food up and look at it before eating it. Maybe giving thanks?

Sometimes its to check it has any dirt on it, we do see them brushing grit off now and again, some even dip it in water and rinse it

Quiet Inspiration some years apparently are worse than others, but in any case it’s as simple as the babies being more susceptible due to weakened immune systems and heightened stress levels.

@@VervetMonkey Ahhh, ok! I know that human babies often get it if they are nursing while mom is on antibiotics, and diabetics are prone to get it, so I was just curious if it may have been related! The poor little vervet babies look so miserable, it can't be fun!
