I cannot thank you enough for actually opening up the door 'guts' here. This was such a super helpful video! You saved me so much time and money!! A locksmith wanted to charge us over $150 to fix the handle. With the help of your video I realized two screws had come out of their holes and one was completely missing. It cost 20 cents to replace the screw and 15 minutes of fixing once I found your video. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

Took my kwickset handle set apart last night and found the two screws completely removed. Took everything off the door for repair this morning. By time I got around to it, the parts were moved and my memory failed me as to where everything went. Your situation was exactly like mine and saved me so much time. Thank you for the great tutorial vid. God bless.

I’ve ran across this problem numerous times. The other one I’ve seen a lot is those latches with the small “bar” you lift up to adjust backseat those fail a lot too where the actual latch disengages from whatever pulls it back inside of the latch body so you have to take the lock off the door and drill the latch body a bit and take a orange pick hook thingy and manually retract it. I love this channel so fun to watch and see someone doing the same shit I encounter

Great video - thank you!!! I fixed a family member's handleset where the thumb lever was not working properly by following the steps, which are, uninstalling the lockset, loosening the screws shown, repositioning the lockset components, and retightening the screws this time with Loctite. After that, you reinstall the lockset and it works like new with the thumb lever now responsive and working. I'm about to use this same video again as the same problem is developing on my own front dooor handleset, just like what happend at my family member's house. It seems like Kwikset has been shortcutting adding Loctite to the positioning screws during their manufacturing process. If they'd just do this, the Loctite would greatly reduce or perhaps even eliminate the apparent inevitability of needing to make this repair should you use your front door regularly like most people.

We get this problem so often that I have an entire section devoted to both latch mechanisms (the two post and weiser’s four post model) in the truck. The plastic cam that actuated the latch is made from plastic and becomes brittle during our Canadian winters. It’s a real PITA doing a lockout when that’s the issue.

This was incredibly helpful, thank you! I noticed my interior handle was loose, had some difficulty getting the interior cover plate off, then realized I pried too hard and the exterior thumb press stopped turning the latch (aka working). After three or four tries and this video finally got it fixed. none of the screws had Loctite on them, but there was some white crust on the floor? Also, there appeared to be small broken pieces of metal but the tabs were intact? I left the lower bolt in while dis-assembling but the upper mechanism just popped out, the screws were not engaged at all. I did the repair without Loctite, but now I think I should get some. My exterior handle has the thumb press in the upper position, but it works the same way. I think my kids have a tendency to jiggle the handles often and that loosens the small mechanism screws; wonder if they offer these with some kind of set screw or nut? better yet, a groove for the assembled mechanism pieces slide into, this way the screw just becomes a vertical set screw, and doesnt get jiggled/loosened

Problem is everyone thinks the blue material that comes on the threads of screws for locks etc is loc-tite. It isn't. It's a thread lubricant. So you can put in those soft screws without stripping out or rounding out the heads. Don't believe me ? Take one of the factory screws and tighten it into a nut. Then take another one and use actual Loc-tite on it. Check it the next day and see which one has more resistance. Do a little research and you will understand the way loc-tite works. You can't put it on a screw or bolt, throw it in a bag and then have that product sit on a shelf for however long it takes to sell it. Lubricants will last much longer in that environment.

I hace a baldwin front entry handle set im trying to remove for this reason , i can unscrew the "brass" bottom of handle from inside door , this model has a hole on the door knob cylinder. Phillips, or T15 fits but spins, is there a model with an allen key? Its 25 yrs old but cant get the door knob to pull off, i ve removed the screw above & below the bolt that would prevent the doorknob from being removed . I explained that as well as i could.... I was a video that says u have to push in the button on the knob cylinder wirh one hand & pull off the knob w/ the other hand , didnt really feel it " push in" when i tried this technique. I have taken pictures and theres definitely no screw , no flat or phillips head when i blow up the picture. If you get a chance i appreciate it. I feel dumb, because i feel this should be very simple. Thanks for your time .

Something is usually too loose, or too tight. Why is it a 1/16th of a turn one way; lock works, but turn other way lock won't work... Seems like most of the time it's never quite tight enough to trust it not work itself loose with use. I agree, always use real Loctite(r). The Blue 242 [Medium Duty]. Even around the house it's handy. Just use it anytime you put something together and save the frustration of a rogue fastener coming loose in a weird inconvenient spot. - Sometimes I sneak in a little Purple [Light duty]. But that's between us... Shh! 😉 Although... For a more heavy usage application, needing more "Oomph" - Or just where maybe the Blue fails to perform for whatever reason ... Jump up to: Red 271 Red [Heavy Duty]. Be prepared though. Red 271; may need tools and quite possibly heat to remove.
