Most Common Mod 2 Mistakes [14. Hill Starts]

This video focuses on successful hill starts for your DAS module 2 motorcycle test.
Passing your DAS DVSA motorcycle module 1 test & module 2 test can be a challenge, as there's so many road safety and machine control procedures to remember when learning to ride a motorbike. Take your time to practise the new skills you learn whilst on your motorcycle lessons.

    Another great video, thank you. For me, once I got the hill start nailed, using the method showed, it has improved the smoothness of all my starts at junctions etc. I have a few hills nearby that I can practice on, and hopefully wont develop too many bad habits from the 125cc before going for my A license.

    Hey, I have my Mod2 next week. Just past my Mod1 yday with 1 minor. I struggle with hill starts but this tuition video is great. Very well explained and demonstrated

    Brilliant explanation Leanna of bite vs brake.. I found that pupils always had a mental picture of a hill start as... Brake released now go!, as opposed to how you demonstrated... Brake released, now am I held on bite, if so now go etc.

    hi Leanna, nice video so in depth its frightening 🤣my instructor almost frighted the life out of me as we were going up a steep hill then he just asked me to pull over as he got me to do a angled start from behind a car going up hill 🤣 i thought it was going to be really hard but i was concentrating so hard on doing the angled start i didn't think about going uphill and i moved off nice and smooth then i found id done hill start when he said well done 🤣 hope your having a lovely weekend. kev

    I've been waiting for this vid. I'm currently waiting for my cb500f to be delivered and I just seem to of lost my confidence for hill starts, not sure why 😮. Thanks for sharing 👍

    Have my mod 1 in the morning, only 2 minors in my practice test Saturday in my hour of practice for things I was fine with beforehand so I think even if I slip up here or there due to nerves I should be fine. Figure 8 are effortless when you're looking at the cones and doing the maneuver at 50-55 feels SO easy it's not even fair 😂 I think I've got this just need to make sure I get the speeds which I had 52 52 52 55 53 for my last 5 passes on the speed trap Saturday. Riding home on the 20 minute ride after felt like I was riding a 125 but it was a ER6, though it is undeniably easier to keep your speed consistent on a 125 compared to a 600+ which changes 2mph either way a lot 😂

    Another question if i may : What about hill stats on a junction with a camber? Today this caught me out and i almost decided to pull the front brake and that would of been a bit bad for me. I came to a stop just to cool my heart rate and as i went to set off again with foot on rear brake the camber of the road took me to the right side. Luckily it's a 125 and not all that heavy so i saved it from hitting the ground. Scary though.

    Learn how to gently use the front brake when needed. You can do hill starts on the front brake if you need your right foot down, it's just not as easy as the rear brake. It's much easier if you only use 2 fingers on the brake lever as you can use the other two to control the throttle. Raise the revs whilst holding the brake lever on, and do the hill start as you would normally. Just don't grab the lever at any point if you can't find the bite point, gently reapply the lever. Have a go and let me know how you get on 👍🏻

    Hi Leanna , on my test I don’t remember doing a hill start . I must have done one but it was probably just a lot gentler than the slopes I had been practicing on. I think I am saying to the others not to overthink the hill start in advance of the test.

    My mate was a (car) driving instructor and used to get his students to 'set the revs' and then feed in the clutch. I've never done that (having taught myself to ride a motorcycle...as we did back then...) and then learnt to drive. Bike or car I've always held it on the brake, found the biting point and increased the revs as required as I pull away. My (car) instuctor never gave me any 'instruction' on hill starts (on a 'test course' that was pretty much a hill start at every 'Give Way' or traffic lights.) I have a question, it's often difficult to tell on action cameras, when you stop at traffic lights how much distance do you leave behind the car in front. PS Your 'chuckle' is so funny!🤣

    Did my 6th cbt recently and was with a novice doing hill starts, the instructor didnt even ask me to do it again as I followed the novice away completely in autopilot without even thinking about it! Its fun to analyse all the steps involved but its kinda like saying how do you walk, I dunno I just do it. Hopefully I wont mess it up on test after being such a smart alec.😂👍😎

    Haha, the key is to remember we all have something to learn despite a wealth of experience out on the road. Even when we think we are good, we will still get it wrong sometimes, instructors included! Good luck with your tests 😊

    What about stop start traffic on a hill. Know the principle will be the same. However are there any tips to make life easier should you not be able to go around traffic for instance on a very narrow road?

    I'm not sure I understand the question, sorry. Do you mean what about multiple hll starts due to flowing slow moving traffic?

    @@motorcyclelessonsuk that is correct. It's one of my most feared obstacles as there are plenty of hills with slow moving traffic here that it can be difficult to co-ordinate yourself on the controls quick enough should you need to react to something or at least not fall off :)

    Yes. I had a student hold the bike on the bite point with lots of revs and the rear brake on. Big puff of smoke from the exhaust and the clutch no longer worked. When we took it apart the clutch plates had got so hot they had fused together. We still have them in the training school as a reminder to others.
