    @@motorcyclelessonsuk Hi, just to follow on I was out today doing a bit of practice and noticed at some lights it is hard to identify when they will change. ( the other lights are out of view or traffic flow is low) At these I just did shoulder checks every 10 to 15 secs to cover me. Just wondering on your thoughts on this and if that is a reasonable approach?

  • @motorcyclelessonsuk

    @motorcyclelessonsuk

    Жыл бұрын

    @@05gt99hello 👋, yes and no, it's possible to do your checks relatively quickly as soon as the lights change whilst simultaneously raising your revs and preparing your clutch (don't rush the clutch though for the pull away!). Or... Watch for the traffic that is flowing slowing down to stop. There is usually time to see them beginning to slow down for their amber light to anticipate it might be yours next. There's no problem with doing lots of checks whilst stationary however, it is just a lot of effort if the lights really are on a long sequence. Experiment with different approaches and see what suits you 😊

    "If you think you are in neutral ease the clutch out slowly....If the bike starts to move off...find 'another neutral" 🤣🤣🤣 I rarely leave it in neutral during 'normal' riding, especially if I'm the last in the queue at lights, you may need to get out of the way quickly for an emergency vehicle or someone searching for another radio station.....My (car) instructor always taught me to be 'prepared and ready to move off' and (in a Mini) get out of first gear as soon as you can! 🤣🤣🤣

    Ha yes, I'm sure bikes have more than one neural 😂 Hmmm, I've never known anyone "ride out of being rear ended". In the time it would take to see it happening, decide where to go and engage the clutch, if it was going to happen it would have happened anyway. The requirement for emergency services is more to do with keeping a good eye on mirrors, which would give plenty of time to pop back in gear and move. Also, sitting with right foot down, left up and ready to quickly pop back into gear helps too. Thanks for your comments.

    Traffic lights.. What can possibly go wrong they are so simple haha.... A simple question I used to ask my pupils (oh god here he goes), which rarely got the correct answer, or the one I wanted was... When turning right, what's the difference (in most cases) between a solid green and a green arrow? The answer I wanted of course was "on a green arrow the opposing traffic is on red"... The answers I would get would go on about priority, or well, you can only go that way, blah blah blah. Eventually we'd get there, like the sedative scene in 'young frankenstien'... You might have to Google that haha. I've condensed that Leanna, (someone called you Lianna, tell them off!!) thanks again for video.

  • @motorcyclelessonsuk

    @motorcyclelessonsuk

    Hi Graham, certainly worth having the discussion isn't it?! Except that with a green arrow that is not always the case... there's a dangerous junction in Nottingham where we have the green arrow (to turn left in this instance) and the opposing traffic is on green and CAN turn across right in front of us. Frightening. Thanks again 😊

  • @Grahamvfr

    @Grahamvfr

    Жыл бұрын

    @@motorcyclelessonsuk yes we also also have that, not good. It was the however the right turns I was referring to, fortunately they seem consistent in Middlesbrough, although we have one junction with a solid green for turning right, when opposing traffic is on red, so newbies end up waiting in middle for oncoming traffic, whilst the locals behind are blaring their horn as they know you can proceed. 🙄

    Apparently DFT (department for transport) wants riders to do their theory test before their cbt, its a draft to be brought up. Its already difficult as it is now. The government should be encouraging new riders not discourage them.

  • @Brandy._

    If they want newer riders to have a theory test present prior to riding then get rid of CBT and make it purely an A1,A2 and full A licensing system!

    Personally I'd welcome a theory test for CBT. It would certainly help the 16/17 year olds who nowadays sit glued to their phones whist in the car rather than paying attention to the road.

    I sometimes struggle with mistake #10 (coming down through all the gears before stopping at lights). On my 125cc, I sometimes find I can't shift down when stopping quite quickly - I get stuck in a false neutral. I remember being told this is a common problem on 125cc bikes, but it doesn't really help my practice before I do the DAS later on. I've held up a few (very patient, it has to be said) cars as I struggle to get the bike in any gear, then down into 1st (having then to wait for another cycle of the lights).

  • @motorcyclelessonsuk

    @motorcyclelessonsuk

    10 ай бұрын

    Hi William, this is usually due to waiting too long to change down the gears and then trying to come down all the gears at once too quickly. As you slow down through deceleration or braking you should be coming down through the appropriate gear for the speed you are slowing down to. Once you are below 20mph the clutch can stay in whilst you smoothly brake (this is not coasting because you are braking) but you still continue to select the appropriate gear for the speed you are slowing down to. If you do this, and you are positive with your foot for the selection of 1st gear at the correct speed (anything below about 5-8mph) you shouldn't hit any neutrals at all. Sometimes if you slow down too quickly through poor planning ahead and forget or don't have time to change down enough gears the bike will get "stuck" in a gear. If this happens, take the clutch out to the biking point, pull it back in again immediately then tap the gear lever (down), and it will change gear. You can do this repeatedly for each gear you are stuck in. Don't rush and don't stamp on the gear lever. If it gets stuck in a real not false neutral, then the clutch needs to come all the way out and back in again before it will change gear. This is due to the sequential nature of the gear box. Essentially this can all be avoided through better planning ahead and gear selection on the approach to stopping, but if it happens now you have the tools to deal with it. Thanks, Leanna
