My favorite “monuments” are the First Shot Monument, “The Loop” Monument, and that one wayside monument on East Cavalry Field.

It would be nice if all of the battlefields had followed a similar format for marking Corps HQ and such. However, it is interesting when visiting these other battlefields to find out the convention they used and it gives each of them a unique feel. They have the Confederate burial trenches marked at Shiloh and I don't think I have seen that elsewhere. At any rate, more great nuggets of information. Keep them coming, Tim!

Such a quandary with the use of cannons and cannonballs, Tim... 😀

So many great monuments and stories at Gettysburg. A Teenager’s Guide to the Civil War: A History Book for Teens is a history of the Civil War specifically for teens.

I did realize there that many memorial and/or markers at the Gettysburg Battlefield! It would have been interesting if Confederate unit memorials - or at least markers were placed on the battlefield. It would have given a visitor a better sense of the scope of the battle.

Good information. I was just there mid April and I was guilty of passing on some untrue info to my grandson. I will try to correct this. Also my grandson wants to know if you use a teleprompter? Ed from Lynchburg

In case anyone is interested, ‘Gettysburg Then and Now’ is available as a reprint. Also, I recently purchased the book ‘Guide to Gettysburg Battlefield Monuments’ by Huntington which has location and pictures of monuments in the park. It does not appear to have any of the markers outside the park. Even parks (that I have visited) where the Confederates won have few if any monuments from the south. E.g. Bull Run/Manassas has just the Stonewall Jackson statue and a few northern monuments, as I recall. Interesting video, as always.

The lack of continuity between the states in terms of upright cannons and stacks of cannonballs always tickles me. It’s the states right to do as they please, after all. Why should they pledge an allegiance or form an alliance with any other state or government other than their own, to please outsiders. It’s sort of like a microcosm of the civil war. It would be very nice if there was uniformity, especially because some of these sites (Antietam and Gettysburg especially) are very close to each other, and can be visited by the same people. It gets confusing!
