    I believe there is a memorial tablet at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church on High Street dedicated to the nuns of the Daughters of Charity from Emmitsburg, Maryland. These brave women nursed the wounded after the battle.

    The best book that I've found for currently cataloguing an locating all the monuments is called "Guide to Gettysburg Battlefield Monuments" by Tom Huntington. Wonderful color photos and short bio information is available for each monument, as well as GPS location data.

    Looking forward to it Tim, you're like a scientist of history because of your attention to detail. Anyway I'd like to see stories about the Battlefield buildings in the war and what happened during the battle. Were people inside, who controlled them, is there still a lot of bullets or other marks in them, were they used as field hospitals?

    Would be nice if the aspects you mention were compiled in one place. Realize it would enter a crowded field, but a well written, thoroughly researched, carefully illustrated work could add so much detail and organize content now spread across multiple books.

    Thanks for Monuments Monday, Tim. I'd love to see an episode about the Longstreet equestrian statue. (Sorry if you've already done one that I missed or if you don't count it as a monument.) It almost looks like an insult to Longstreet since his horse is undersized and, unlike other equestrian statues, is standing directly on the ground without a base.

    What about a Momument begins and ends episode. Explain the approval process and why some monuments like the 13th Vermont have their Axe at his feet vice carrying and why Sickles bust never made it to the Excelsior Brigade monument. Interesting from where they start and where they finished.

  • @Grant25
    @Grant257 ай бұрын

    A good idea for a video would be viewers sending in ideas of things for Tim to say that we know he would never. Such as Sickles being his favorite and responsible for the park, Jenny Wade not being that interesting, Devils Den being just a bunch of rocks that aren’t important, John Burns being his personal hero. Viewers could donate to the historical society for it.

    Monument Monday is a great idea. How about some focus on campaign monuments/markers vs battlefield proper monuments/markers in chronological order? Perhaps the airing can coincide with the campaign dates in June/July?

    Tim, maybe you could focus on a specific monument(as usual)… then explain, in detail, where they actually fought. -Like, if you disregarded the nearness to roads and rules about monument placement, where did the brigades actually fight. Thank you!

    I enjoy Monuments Monday. The monument 's position are temporal, just a moment in time. I like detail on the Regiments movements in the whole Gettysburg campaign. My ancestor's monument is in the Wheafield, I visited it for the first time in the mid 70's. Over the years I learned the unit was up on Stoney Hill and postioned at one point in the woods of Wheatfield road. Sure its the same for all regiments. I like your background on the regiment's intial formation. I think qoutes from the dedications of the monuments give insight into what the war meant to them. I like your idea of going to other monuments across the region to tell the Gettysburg Campaign story. I live near the Pipe Creek line that Meade had proposed. A number of Markers to visit and stories to tellbin that context.

    The Monuments Monday presentations are great. Please, not to be critical, but when filming in the field, avoid presenting as though you were talking to a tour group instead of an individual watching from California. Verbal explanations and pointing are lost to those of us not intimately familiar with the geography, especially when you refer to present day roads. Would it be possible to show a map or aerial photo with an indicator where the monuments, the associated flank markers and advance positions are? Adding a set of arrows indicating the movement of the unit from the monument to its advance position would be terrific. Understand the focus of the presentation is on the monument, but, as you do verbally now, some context adds a lot. Complicated visuals aren't needed - for someone on ACHS staff, it would be neither complex or time consuming to create a visual that would be sufficient. NPS GIS specialist might help you with background images / maps - as the care of battlefield artifacts is a major allocation of NPS resources, GIS likely has inventory he could share.
