This is why Keith Jackson is the best college football announcer ever. He was obviously excited when Westbrook caught it but then he quickly regained his composure quickly and described the aftermath of the play, about the joy of the Colorado players and the agony of Michigan players, capturing the moment perfectly. I was happy for him that his last game he called was an all-time classic (2006 Rose Bowl between USC and Texas).

As a CU grad and having lived in Boulder for 20 years, I absolutely remember where I was when this play happened. We were up at a friend's house on Sugarloaf, just west of Boulder, and I, of course, figured this game was over. I began to think they had a chance when Kordell had so much time back there to really step up and heave it, and when Westbrook came down with it, I realized that it was a moment that every fan, in any sport, lives for and rarely gets to experience. I thank you Colorado Buffs, and my sorrow and sympathy goes out to Rashaan Salaam, his family, and all the heartbroken people who knew or had seen him play. Rashaan, may you rest in peace.

So a little trivia for you guys: I played football for a Division 3 school called Wabash College, located in Crawfordsville, Indiana. In 2001, we had a play in our playbook called "Colorado". It was designed for last-second throws from around midfield. The play was a designed tipped ball; our 6'6" TE/WR would jump up at the 5 and tip the ball into the end zone, where another receiver would make the catch. Tied at 21 with our arch-rivals DePauw, we called "Trips Lex Gun Colorado Red". The play had only worked one time in practice. If you want to see what happened, find a video of "Monon Bell The Catch".

We were up in the mountains in Colorado driving to a favorite fishing spot when this play happen as we listened on the radio. I remember calling the Hail Mary pass as Stewart unloaded it. My friend Gary was driving and we came pretty close to going off the mountain as everyone in the vehicle went nuts. Didn't get to see the actual play until latter that night. It was sweet justice for me. I grew up in Michigan, was educated there and attended both EMU and Michigan. The real kicker was that years earlier I was a policeman in the Ann Arbor area and worked the games as such below the student section.

The Steelers under Cowher & Lebeau ran a unique defensive system, so they were always looking for “system” guys they could plug in. This enabled them to pluck up talent other teams overlooked or didn’t fit in more conventional defenses. A lot of Pittsburgh’s success was because it was difficult to prepare for them, and their 3-4 defense. Aaron Smith was a notable CU product who played a key role in that defense.

I came back to Boulder and finished my degree and worked as a bouncer at a bar called Potter's. I'll never forget the night I had to deny Michael Westbrook entry to the bar because we were full. There was a line about 50 yards long of people waiting and Mr Westbrook walked right up to the front and looked at as if to say I'm a superstar let me in now. I told him to go back to the end of the line and he looked at me like I was crazy. I had two later escort him out of the area. Let's just leave it at that.

Obviously, a great throw by Kordell (call it about 72 yards in the air - and on-target) and great overall play. For comparison - and it's hard to find - in a September, 2016 game versus the Lions, Aaron Rodgers drew the longest pass interference call in history. The most amazing part of it was that he was flushed to his left, barely had time to plant, and heaved it from his own 28 to 3 years deep in the end zone (75 yards) and right on stride. And it was a rope - not a Hail Mary - just a regular play. If he stepped into a throw, I'm thinking Rodgers can go 85 or so yards.

Just yesterday, I read an interesting theory which stated that this game might have cost Penn State a chance for the 1994 national title. The theory goes that, if Michigan had held on to win, Colorado wouldn't have been as highly ranked when Nebraska beat them; thus, the Huskers wouldn't have vaulted to #1 (as they were) when they beat Colorado, especially not in the same week as when Penn State blew out Ohio State 63-14. In addition, a little earlier in the season, Penn State beat Michigan at the Big House; presumably, if Michigan had beaten Colorado, Michigan would have been ranked higher and Penn State's win over them would have carried greater weight (at the same time that Nebraska's win over Colorado would have been less important). (NOTE: What got me thinking of this was when I was reading articles about this year's Penn State team, who beat then-#2 Ohio State, and their snub from the playoff in favor of the Buckeyes. That got me thinking of the '94 team, and many of the comments on some of the articles I read mentioned this game as the one which eventually gave Nebraska the 1994 title at Penn State's expense.) All in all, a very interesting consideration about the 1994 season.

74 yard is more like it...see where Stewart is standing when he threw it. I know, I know...only counts from LOS. That is absolutely the most impressive Hail Mary pass I've ever seen. Beats out the Flutie pass vs Miami, even though that was a great one too. From that far away, I knew the game was over, comeback impossible, etc. Why I didn't turn off the TV at that point I don't know, but I'm glad I didn't. Kordell made the impossible possible. Absolutely incredible.

This is why Keith Jackson is the best college football announcer ever. He was obviously excited when Westbrook caught it but then he quickly regained his composure quickly and described the aftermath of the play, about the joy of the Colorado players and the agony of Michigan players, capturing the moment perfectly.

I watched this in my den and absolutely lost my mind when it happened, still can't believe it happened. Go Buffs!
Look at that protection! Hell of a job by the offensive line. Amazing throw too of course!
Back when Colorado was a top 10 program. They've fallen so far in stature over the past 25 years.
As a college football fan I felt the obligation to come by and watch this video today. Although it's with a little bit of sadness. I'm not a Colorado or Michigan fan, but this was my favorite Keith Jackson call. Especially his poetic comments after the dust had settled. College football has lost one of its great titans. Parents, have your kids watch this video for a good history lesson in CFB.
Every time I hear Keith’s “IN-CREDIBLE”! In this clip, I get chills!
They always talk about the Flutie play but this was a longer pass and is hardly ever mentioned by the national media as one of the great plays of all time...
there was a stretch maybe 10 years when no one put as many guys in the NFL as Colorado did and I think Bill Cowher drafted half of them
@scottweisel3640

I was in high school when this game went down. My old man was on me to mow the yard and do some clean up as fall was approaching. This game was over but kept watching to delay doing my work. I remember thinking to myself, they're too far out for a hail mary as there's no's chance Stewart can chuck it that far. OOOOPS. Maybe not. Great game.
This was my childhood. I replayed and replayed that play over and over in my yard with my friends. And I’m not even a fan of either team. Good times.

At the end Keith said that Colorado’s next game was at Texas. This season was a few years before the Big 12 so that means the Buffaloes non conference schedule was at Michigan & at Texas? Not to mention they’re playing in the old Big 8 so they still had conference games with Nebraska & Oklahoma too. What a tough schedule.

Was that Kordell Stewart, or did they wheel a howitzer out to the 27-yard-line?! Couldn't tell!
This brings back a lot of memories. I had just graduated college and moved about 1500 miles away from home. I watched the first part of this game and then listened to the end on the radio in a mall parking lot. I can remember that day like it was yesterday. How in the world was that 23 years ago?
As a Penn State fan I've always wondered if this play didn't cost them the 94 title. Nebraska got a big bump beating the undefeated Buffaloes and PSU then beat a one win Michigan team, whereas Michigan whoulda been like 2 when PSU played and beat them in the Big House.

I was lucky enough to get a full-ride scholarship to CU in 1987. I left in 88 to play for another team. One of the biggest mistakes of my life.
Remember this! Was a Penn State fan, and thought Colorado did us a favor by beating Michigan, then laid an egg against Nebraska.

This was a back breaking loss when it happened. This was also a time when you celebrated if you could beat Michigan.
Stewart heaved the ball more than 70 yards in the air. wow

It's 2020 and I'm still smiling about this play!
Holy shit what an arm! Kordell bombed that one!
So crazy. I was 13 when this happened and still remember. I'd watched almost the entire game over at a friend's house, but my dad came to pick me up before it was over. We listened to the end on the radio in the car. I couldn't believe I watched the whole thing and then didn't get to see this play.
One of the few high points in Colorado Football--- fun to relive it !
I remember thinking there was no way in the world he would be able to reach the end zone. When Stewart releases the ball his front foot is planted at his own 27. What an insane throw. I think I jumped and yelled for 10 or 15 minutes after the ball was caught and I'm not even a Colorado fan.

As a Pitt guy who was only 12 years old that season I greatly appreciate this post.

RIP Keith Jackson. Truly a giant among commentators.
Never gets old.
