As a current teacher, this is a LOATHSOME trend. How are guns *in school* safer than, I don't know, limiting access to firearms? Schools are not prisoners. Teachers are not prison wardens, nor are we the military. I teach music for crying out loud. If my state tried to issue me a gun, I would refuse, and if they fired me for it, so be it. I will not be party to this insanity.

It's not really.a second job. Unless school shootings are a daily occurrence at every single school in the state, most of the time, it just means carrying around an extra accessory to work. Also, it's not mandatory.

I'm a teacher in a public school in a rural area where most people own guns (we even have classes in school where students shoot shotguns at clay targets, called trap-shooting), and even I can think of coworkers who shouldn't be armed.

I am an armed security guard. In order to get licensed I have to go through 68 hours of use of force and firearms training. I have to pass an accuracy test and a mental evaluation every year to renew my license and complete another 8 hours of firearm range time.

Where I live, it takes 18 MONTHS for all that including 24 WEEKS of firearm safety training BEFORE being granted a license for a hand gun in any security position.

Mike Johnson’s courage in allowing The full House of Representatives to vote on a bill may even surpass Mike Pence’s courage in not violating the Constitution and overriding the votes of the citizens of the USA. One of the teachers in my junior high was arrested because she threatened some students and had a loaded gun in her car. To say that I am apprehensive about arming teachers is a huge understatement.

I am a teacher and I would not sign up for carrying a gun in the classroom because that would be batsh*t crazy to have a gun in the classroom.

@@tjjames9846 Your little fantasy scenario makes no sense because you misunderstand the law that was passed. It doesn't make it mandatory for all teachers to be armed. It allows those that wish to exercise their 2nd Amendment right to do so. There should be no way any student would know whether any particular teacher is armed as they will be carrying their firearm concealed. Concealed means hidden from sight or secret.

My airline ticket was literally just downgraded from business class to premium economy because they changed the plane they are using. I was told I could only request compensation after my flight. I really hope they pass this law requiring refunds around air travel. I saved and bought a business class ticket, not premium economy

If teachers are allowed to carry guns in school, it kind of implies they may need them. Which, also, sounds like Tennessee just admitted its teachers are underpaid/underappreciated - being as how they may have to defend themselves and their students with deadly force and all.

I wish mr Jordan en mr ronny will get a chance to interview mr putin. It might give them a new perspective on world peace😢

Better late than never. He was swimming upstream against internal opposition and he started from going the wrong direction to begin with. However, I think many people getting their first gun, or a new type of gun might take interest in a free gun safety course if it included something else. Maybe they could include some free time at a shooting range, shooting lessons, or gun cleaning lessons. Those are just some ideas.

​@@JuanMPalacio All of those things are included in a course to get a permit. It's hardly free though, neither is the paperwork. The wait time for an appointment down here is quite long as well. In hindsight, since we dropped the requirement for a permit I'm guessing it's a lot quicker.

I don't think it's a bad idea for some teachers to receive training and be armed in case. I also don't think everyone should be required to take classes because the teachers are. Just saying I complain a whole lot about our politics but I don't see the issue with this one

But the number of people that would be willing to come in and forcibly take it from a teacher and use it against students can't possibly be larger than the number that would just get one from somewhere else. I don't think trying to take one from a teacher would be their first option. So in your example I have to think the benefits would outweigh the potential consequences.

So, lets say you have a hostile student that loses his or her control and decides they'll go for the teachers gun. Now you have two people struggling for a gun in a classroom where there should be no gun.

A long time ago, a history teacher at my junior high school (yes, a long time ago) told all of his students to get down on their knees and worship him, because he was annoyed that they weren't paying attention. Yes, he was removed from his duties that day; but imagine if he had a gun?

Just came here to say that Grace Kuhlenschmidt has been crushing it in these correspondence pieces lately, such adept and subtle characterisation, timing, mannerisms, etc. I hope she gets more and more screen time and producers pick up on her obvious talent.

Russia has taught its neighbours that peace with Putin comes out of strength, not appeasement.

These two work well together.

Paying for deterrence, is paying for peace. I love TDS and have loved TDS since Johnny's first first Tour of (desk) Duty. Everyone and every writer has been exceptionally capable of articulating nuanced opinions about everything, except, why we absolutely SHOULD purchase peace through the Arsenal of Democracy. I would rather pay $1,000 to buy peace over there, than buy it with 10 lives of American boys from here.

Summed up the insanity around guns in America perfectly - live in Australia.

Yes, peace. Because the cultures involved only respect strength and action, not bowing and capitulation. Obama gave Russia the reset button and they tried taking Ukraine, first by politics and then by proxy war in the East, and then by an invasion they lied and said would never happen.

Yeah, I don't get this childish pseudo-pacifist BS he was peddling here. Peace does not come from throwing friends / allies under the bus to appease aggressors. Ukraine was invaded, and the U.S. was a signatory of the Budapest Memorandum; therefore helping Ukraine defend itself is just and right.

Well to be fair, I think teachers could carry a gun outside of school without meeting the requirements.

A former substitute teacher, former school resource officer, did something horrible with a gun at an elementary school here in S.E. Washington just a few days ago

I think most sane people find supporting Ukraine to be acceptable... Aid sent to Israel will be harder to find acceptable.

Yeah, this topic was handled very poorly. They made it sound like the aid to Ukraine was wrong somehow, but it's old military equipment and a loan to a country whose babies and old people are being shelled and which is making WW3 less probable. Ukraine is a linchpin. If Ukraine falls, there's no guarantee Africa will get its grain, which might mean unrest and hunger (and even more immigrants to the U.S.) There's no guarantee the Middle East will gets its grain, and I don't need to tell you what that means. Russia will have potentially more courage to attack Europe. Europe will be scared and ramping up military production at the expense of other sectors, which means problems for the world economy. China will have more courage to attack Taiwan, which means problems with the microchip market, which basically means the world economy making a nosedive.

For them, this is about genocide and a land grab. Ukraine is defending itself; Israel is not. Israel had the chance to do that, but decided to go the genocide/land grab route instead. Israel is the Russia of its war.

I liked Grace's bit here. I think she's figuring out her persona and/or the writers are. Several of her pieces have been more cringey than funny, but I've enjoyed her last couple of appearances. Kudos!

How many jobs teachers do at the same time? They don't only teach, they educate children where their parents failed and in Tennessee they are now unpaid security guards.

Totally get what Joe means. Helping Ukraine win is the first step to world peace. He signed a bill which will help them. If Ukraine loses World Peace is in jeopardy because of Russia. Use your brain guys!

If you don't think giving aid to Taiwan and Ukraine promotes world peace, think of China taking over Taiwan and Russia occupying Europe and what "peace" that would look like. And, after 50 years as an educator, no teacher I know wants to carry a gun in school.
