feel like he's more of a Guardiola type player than Busquets; both are/were DMs that attack space rather than players and prefer interceptions over tackles, but Guardiola and Carrick were also playmakers, while Busquets is closer to a pure DM and sometimes even a CB (grossly oversimplified because of the way Barça/Cruijffian teams play and the fact that Guardiola usually played in a 3-man MF rather than a 2-man but you get what I mean)

It's a real shame that he was competing with flashier players in the England set up. He's exactly the sort of intelligent, level head which England have needed for several tournaments. It really shows how good he was at reading the game that he was also a functional CB cover despite lacking in a lot of the physical components compared to a normal CB. His ability to make the right call meant that he never had to make flashy tackles, interceptions or aerial duels.

very underrated.. but United fans know his quality do David Beckham please

As a liverpool fan, Carrick was absolutely quality just overshadowed by more conventionally "productive" midfielders of the same generation (Gerrard, Lamps, Scholes etc.)

Sad to see a very great humble player retire, he is the last one from the 2008 champions league squad wining side, so that's the end of an era. Thanks for the insight joe .

As a West Ham fan, I always had a soft spot for Carrick. He was unassuming and sometimes got overlooked for his contributions during the early part of his Career. He wasn't made 1st choice starter straight away, unlike other midfielders at the time. It's always a bit harder when your dad and uncle don't pick the team.

Carrick was a highly underrated player, he has done exceptionally well for Man U. I hope to see young players getting his guidance at Manchester United academy.

Really controlled the midfield when he played, shame how he never got the glory he deserved, for me I think he is a regista

I think the PL was just not the best league for Carrick. He is underrated for years. Maybe he would have get the respect he deserves if he played for a La Liga top club

Underrated definitely. But he was the signing in 2006/2007 that really changed the dynamics of the manutd team of that era.

I mean when great players like xabi alonso and xavi Hernandes,all rated him and baffled why he isn’t in the national team? That just speaks volumes about how good he was in his role. It’s just a huge joke that some of the British press paints him in a very negative light when carrick was at his peak

I think he has always been quite under rated I feel he has been such a consistent player that Manchester United needed with new players coming and going. He doesn't make mistakes that hurt United like some CDMs do and his touch and passing is pretty good too. People say his lack of pace hurts him but he is always in the right spot so pace is not as important.

He was the Orchestrator, not only did he dictate the play but he always made everyone around him better

If Carrick had played for England during their 'Golden Generation', it would have gotten the most out of Lampard, Gerrard and Scholes, and would probably have meant they would have won something.

At the time scholes has retired,a midfield trio of lampard and Gerrard with Carrick sitting behind would definitely bring the most out of them to venture more forward. Like the whole Le Tssier and scholes BS,managers often loves to waste a central cog in the team

Matt Moore I get what you mean. This highlights how badly we need a manager who has actual tactics rather than just putting all our star players in the starting XI and hoping for the best.

The only thing I can say is: "It's Carrick you know, It's hard to believe he's not Scholes"

Always liked Michael Carrick as a player he had such a good positional sense and an intelligence that was pretty rare for dm's in the English game so happy to see you give him a bit of time in the spotlight. On a side note the drawing paul scholes looks a bit like voldemort but with receding ginger hair.

In that 07/08 season, he got forward quite a bit, he and Scholes always switched roles, when one sat, one went forward or pressed, they complimented each other very well. I never really saw Carrick as just a sitting midfielder till after Scholes retired.

Its a shame that he was overlooked in the england squad who preferred to play 4-4-2 with lampard and gerrard in midfield even though it didnt work and two strikers on top. Imagine the england team of 2006 world cup with a 4-3-3 with carrick as the base of the midfield with gerrard and lampard pushing on and a single striker. More balance.

Thank you so much for covering my favourite player at United he's not the greatest talent wise or the most exciting to watch but he's such an important part of how United play he's the engine in a car whilst all the other gadgets get all the attention and praise everyone forgets without the engine the car doesn't go anyway regardless of how good and flashy the gadgets are.

Less England caps that Theo Walcott, Jordan Henderson, Glen Johnson, Gary Cahill, James Milner etc. Like Scholes, overlooked because he didn't run around like a headless horse (Gerrard, Rooney) and constantly play glory diagonal passes that went out for throw ins (Gerrard)

I'd go as far as saying the single most underrated English footballer of all time. The man's a fucking genius.

Carrick as the CDM, Gerrard as the 8 & Lampard as the 10 would have been the right mid for their golden generation. So sad he was overlooked while he was the solution to bring the right balance in that midfield. Him being infront of Ferdinand & Terry would have been superb

Along with Matt le Tissier,hands down one of the most underrated English players who wasn’t selected for his nation purely because he wasn’t an all balls in and out players like Lampard or Gerrard.

Pretty much became the heart of the team like Keane was before him and it'll be great to have him training younger players because he is somebody with pretty much every skill a footballer needs other than a bit of speed. Unfortunately though the Carrick era is ending and we need somebody else to become the heart of the team. For me I'd look no further than Fosu-Mensah but I can't see Mourinho using him in midfield so we need to get Weigl from Dortmund who is both young and a carbon copy of Carrick.

Busquets, Alonso, & Carrick are similar right? Not carbon copies ofc But if you had to compare them with other deep midfielders, these three would be grouped more closely together than others, is that correct?

Yes! They are/were brilliant. All are great positionally, defensively and attacking. Busquets was the best of them though, because he played in a rigid possessive and positional system. Barça took his role and talent to another unmatched level.

Alonso and Carrick perhaps are the closest in terms of playing styles and skills, both blends defensive skills to break opposition attack with offensive skills to sprays pass all over the field (Though Alonso is better than Carrick in this areas). Busquets, however is a different breed of DM, he is Barcelona's key in maintaining possesion. Who else could break opposition attack and dispose pass to anyone one in a split seconds like busquets?

Yes. Some recongnition for a a criminally-underrated player. I read a piece from Goal.com that referenced him as 'The English Pirlo' and while Pirlo' himself remains a class above most it's not too far off. He's another English midfielder who went under the radar as the national team was consumed by the Gerrard-Lampard midfield saga and I like to think that he was a lot like Paul Scholes in the second half of his career - a deep-lying playmaker par excellence. Sadly, while Scholes always had a chance to stand out due to his goals (and that ginger beacon on his head), Carrick is more likely to get lost in the shuffle. He was a key man in one of the great Premier League squads and continues to remain so in a new capacity to do this day - consistency and quality over such a long tenure at one of the biggest teams in the world is the surest indicator of the class of this player. Proud to have him as Skipper of Manchester United. Thank you Tifo - only you guys could have done him justice!

He was the perfect replacement of roy Keane, if he had the bite roy had he would have been much more different I believe but yet he was still amazing

If Pep could have one of all those England midfielders it would probably have been Carrick. Or maybe Scholes.

A shame he was under utilised for England. Players like him and hargreaves are important in balancing the midfield.

Many fans don't understand the game. One red the other told me that Carrick is overrated and he slows our game. Other say he makes sideway passes. I think people don't watch the game properly and they rate the B2B midfielder who will carry the ball and shoot from distance.
