Michael Carrick was one of the most underrated midfielders ever! He saw everything going on the pitch. He always kept things simple and that was the key to his brilliance on the pitch as a deep lying defensive midfielder. He's the kind of midfielder United's current team badly needs. I also remember the varieties of long range intelligent passes Carrick sends to the strikers. Rooney scored many goals through Carrick's assists. His vision as a deep lying defensive midfielder was brilliant. I doff my Hat for Sir Alex Ferguson's foresight in bringing him and making him a key member of United's squad back then. Michael Carrick is arguably one of the best midfielders the English Premier League has ever seen.

Just now realizing Carrick was United’s Busquets. Not too flashy, keeps it simple and helps the team maintain their balance. And above all: GOOD BASIC TECHNIQUE, which seems to be missing with a lot of players nowadays

He had a very acute positional sense at covering funcions. And he is way more technical than Busquets. That is why he is, in my opinion, the best in that holding position. He adds the organizing dimension to the role that Makelele, Gattuso or Busquets lack. Xabi Alonso is also great at both tasks but he is clearly more an attack minded midfielder

@@firellparker7463 is Busquets more capable than Carrick was at passing? Only recently Busquets has discovered himself as an assist man. Carrick did that all along his carreer. Carrick is also better at long range shooting and they are equally good incorporating at the attack. Busquets is one of the best ever at shielding the defence, something at which Carrick was certainly way above average but not godlike Even Lampard said that Carrick was more technical than him since their West Ham days.

One of the most underrated players. United really struggled once he left.

I know little about football but thought Carrick was so underrated especially by England. If he'd been Spanish, French, Italian he would've won 80+ caps. Always seemed to have so much time. Wish him all the luck in his next chapter.

He had what few other players ever had or will have, the ability to pick out a pass for a run that hasn't even started yet. Paul Scholes had that too. They both would send a pass from so deep down in the midfield the player receiving the ball didn't need to start the run until way after. Magic.

At one stage he was known to be the the most accurate passer in Europe I remember it well. Great player

Carrick, Calm, Collected, Honoury Manc.

He was somehow a blend of Xavi and Busquets. His guile was that he would appear going through the motions and then, would kill you with a sudden move: a pass or a shot. An absolutely serene player. An anti Roy Keane, if I may, which is somehow funny and sad. It will be difficult now that he has moved on - from the sidelines as well. Thank you, Carrick, for the memories.

We definately miss his successor in the current squad. how i wish Mactomny gets to his levels quickly

Master of the pre-assist. Good defensively good in the air. Massively respected in Spain particularly by Xabi Alonso. Had the difficult task of replacing the irreplaceable Roy Keane and took a lot of the blame(a bit harshly) when they lost to Barca. Maybe lacked mobility but was all class

Looking at this just reminds me about the good old times in my life and also at United. When things were good I never had to worry about anything. Colloquial Soliloquy I see your point but with the current roster I'm pretty sure Ole is gonna keep him as a CDM and keep it simple..I think fletcher is more adventurous and dynamic then Carrick, but Carrick is more composed and always in position to start an attack from the base of the midfield(Busquets) That's why I think McTominay is more a 'Carrick type of player. Weigl, Llorente, Carvalho, Gundogan and Neves also fits that description.

Mctominay can be a tank in the midfield but he's passing usually frustrates me. You can't be a CDM if you not a good passer. Carrick was a great passer.

Karan Bhardwaj morata is not good at finishing we have seen him miss plenty of chances, giroud is too slow to get in behind the defence and many teams play a high line in the premier league recently even if he did get in behind most defenders will catch up, and higuain is absolutely trash when he was on loan.

Always check you're shoulder when receiving the ball. Don't overcomplivated things. 2 or 3 touch max and keep the ball moving. Stay back and offer support to your centrebacks

Meh.. Carrick cost us in the big games with mistakes often.. but past his 30s he became better and didn't do it as much, not on the same level as Scholes etc

Carrick is a good footballer not more than that. Anything else is overrated. Of all English players...Glen Hoddle, Ray Wilkins, Steve Macnaman and Bryan Robson were better players.

He lost 2 finals against Barcelona

Abhishek RC stfu, most of these passes resulted in chances and opened up the defence

Overrated. Couldn´t run, couldn´t defend, couldn´t shoot, couldn´t operate when pressed. Had good vision and passing range ONLY when he had time on the ball. Against top sides he always played like shite.

He's one of those players whose FEW skills shined only when he had amazing players around him: Rio and Vidic in defense, Scholes, Giggs and Keane in midfield, Rooney, Cantona, CR7, RVP as forwards. To compliment such an incredible squad all that was needed was a disciplined player, which Carrick was... BUT that is ALL he was. And let's not forget that when United started losing all of these great stars, Carrick's true comportment as a ONE DIMENSIONAL player became obvious. Average player on an amazing team. People call him "one of the greats" simply because he is English and has something like a dozen trophies, all of which United would have won whether or not Carrick was fucking born.
