रंग पैराहन का ख़ुशबू ज़ुल्फ़ लहराने का नाम मौसम-ए-गुल है तुम्हारे बाम पर आने का नाम दोस्तो उस चश्म ओ लब की कुछ कहो जिस के बग़ैर गुलसिताँ की बात रंगीं है न मय-ख़ाने का नाम फिर नज़र में फूल महके दिल में फिर शमएँ जलीं फिर तसव्वुर ने लिया उस बज़्म में जाने का नाम दिलबरी ठहरा ज़बान-ए-ख़ल्क़ खुलवाने का नाम अब नहीं लेते परी-रू ज़ुल्फ़ बिखराने का नाम अब किसी लैला को भी इक़रार-ए-महबूबी नहीं इन दिनों बदनाम है हर एक दीवाने का नाम मोहतसिब की ख़ैर ऊँचा है उसी के फ़ैज़ से रिंद का साक़ी का मय का ख़ुम का पैमाने का नाम हम से कहते हैं चमन वाले ग़रीबान-ए-चमन तुम कोई अच्छा सा रख लो अपने वीराने का नाम 'फ़ैज़' उन को है तक़ाज़ा-ए-वफ़ा हम से जिन्हें आश्ना के नाम से प्यारा है बेगाने का नाम

What is so special with the great Mehdi Hassan Saab was the fact that he had an uncanny ability to lend credence to any labz of the shayar owing to his magical voice and inimitable style of gayiki ! Besides, he had a rare GOD-GIFTED ability to render the tragic and romantic nuances of URDU couplets with equal proficiency and with the exact feel, as depicted in the kalam of the shayar ! Perhaps, these might have been the reasons as to why the great Khan Saab could unleach such epoch-making masterpieces at regular interval with consummate ease ! Let us bow our head in reverence to this great legendary singer and gem of a person for his impeccable track record and monumental contributions to the World Of Music ! As a matter of fact, the great Mehdi Hassan Saab originally hailed from 'LUNA', a small hamlet, in the district called 'Jhunjhunu' of the state of Rajasthan (India) wherein sixteen generations of this family of traditional musicians (locally called 'Kalawants') lived ! After the partition of the country, the great Khan Saab had migrated to Pakistan in the year 1947, along with his family, wherein he stayed until his sad demise in 2012 ! As such, the great Mehdi Hassan Saab had represented a composite culture ! To be very true, the great Khan Saab was neither an Indian nor Hindu nor a Pakistani or Muslim ! He belonged to the entire world and was, infact, its prized possession ! It goes without saying that the great Mehdi Hassan Saab was the Brightest Jewel in the World Of Ghazal Gayiki and was, indeed, its Crowning Glory ! I have been an ardent fan and avid listener of the great Mehdi Hassan Saab for the last 40 years or so since 1978 when I first came to know him through his divine creations ! I am now in my late sixties ! The great Khan Saab is my all time favourite ! Listening to the magical voice of the great Mehdi Hassan Saab during the evening through his choicest ghazals for hours on end on daily basis has infused a new lease of life and the will to live in me every day in and day out ! The feeling thereof is divine and can't be expressed in words ! It has raised my spiritual level by several notches up ! The great Mehdi Hassan Saab had made me understand the true meaning of love and its universal appeal and had made me view this World and Humankind in an altogether different perspective -- full of hopes and aspirations ! Those, who dislike this ghazal penned by the great Faiz Ahmed Faiz Saab and brilliantly sung by the great Mehdi Hassan Saab, may either have no music sense or they don't have a knack for good and soulful music having high aesthetic value ! Because, under no stretch of imagination could this ghazal gayiki of the great Mehdi Hassan Saab be rated as below par or substandard ! The great Lata Mangeshkar, who held the great Mehdi Hasan Saab in very high esteem, used to say -- "GOD resides in the voice of Mehdi Hassan Saab" ! Perhaps, Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was absolutely right in his assessment that no one else can ever compete with Mehdi Hassan Saab in so far as his control over the Sur is concerned ! Does the great Mehdi Hasan Saab require any complement from any other quarter regarding his abilities as a singer of exceptional merit and the least from a novice like you or me ! The ghazal gayiki of the great Mehdi Hassan Saab or for that matter, any other singer can't be bad simply because it doesn't suit the taste of a particular listener ! Propriety demands that one should not pass any disparaging remark or cast aspersions on something which is not within someone's grasp or beyond his/ her comprehension without any plausible reason or evidence whatsoever !
