Sublime ! Serene ! Soothing ! Soulful ! and what not ! The feeling of listening to the soulful voice of the great Mehdi Hassan Saab is like embarking on an eternal voyage in a small dinghy on a moonlit night in a deep blue sea with solitude and a little breeze to give company ! Such was the wizardry of this great wizard of music ! Those, who have missed it, have missed many things in their lives ! Those, who dislike this magnificent ghazal, may either have no music sense or they don't have a knack for good soulful music ! Because, under no stretch of imagination can this rendition of the great Mehdi Hassan Saab be treated as below par or substandard ! The style of gayiki of the great Khan Saab or for that matter, any other singer can't be bad simply because it doesn't suit the taste of a particular listener ! It's not fair to cast aspersions or pass any disparaging remark on something which is not within the grasp of someone or beyond someone's comprehension ! My humble advice to the nay sayers --- " If you don't like, kindly don't listen ! No one is under any sort of compulsion to listen" ! Let it be very loud and clear that still, there are millions of music lovers the world over who can live and die with the soulful music of the great Mehdi Hassan Saab ! I am one of those fans who spends hours listening to various renditions of the same ghazal, just to hear the flights of improvisations of the maestro. Some days and some versions are chosen by him perhaps based on his mood of the day. This one is a masterfully lengthy exposition of this beautiful ghazal. He weaves a beautiful web of pathos in this one that is unimaginably beautiful. Words fail me.

I think no comparison

The great Mehdi Hassan had a rare GOD -- GIFTED ability to catch the imagination of the listeners, while performing, get them captivated by casting a web around them and carry them along with the rhythm, owing to his magical voice and inimitable style of gayiki ! Personally speaking, the great Khan Saab had cast such a spell on me that it will be difficult to get out of that spell during this lifetime !

Devyani Patil Ma'am,. Sorry, for this belated response ! While hailing your choice, l propose to add a few lines of my own to your narrative ! Infact, it's very difficult to rate the creations of the great Mehdi Hassan Saab as to which one of them is the 'Numero Uno' ! Because, each and every one of his creations was so unique in its own right, in its own individual way and each and every one of them was so rich in content -- lafz, sur, taal, and loy and aesthetic value ! To be very true, he had mastered all 38 odd ragas through their deft handling and appropriate application in his divine creations ! What is even more astonishing was the fact that the great Khan Saab was able to maintain absolute control over lafz, sur, taal, and loy all along, in doing so, and had never ever compromised on purity of ragas ! He had a rare GOD-GIFTED ability to make the most difficult of the ragas look pretty simple --- viz. Raga Sahera, Raga Darbari, to name a few ! Perhaps, the great Mehdi Hassan Saab was the finest improvisation artist in the World Of Ghazal Gayiki !

As a matter of fact, the great Mehdi Hassan Saab was 'MOSIKI' (music) personified and 'MOSEKAR' ( musician ) par excellence ! He was, infact , Beethoven, Mozart and Back rolled into one ! Here, in this ghazal penned by Adeeb Saharanpuri Saab, it was as if the beautiful lafz of Adeeb Saharanpuri Saab had found its right expression in the magical voice of the great Khan Saab with the exact feel, as depicted in the kalam, owing to his inimitable style of gayiki ! Regarding his singing qualities, it's the least said, the better ! He was just 'INFALLIBLE', as a singer and was, therefore, beyond the reach of us -- 'FALLIBLES' ! Perhaps, such a resourceful singer will ever be born again in this world! It's someone's sheer meanness and narrow - mindedness, which is speaking up now ! To be very true, someone, who has failed in life on all front, uses to have such a negative mindset ! Yes, I have every reason to boast of being successful in life ! If it burns someone's heart, it's certainly one's problem ; not mine ! Propriety demands that one should also try to inculcate the habit of seeing goodness in others as well ; instead of finding fault on every available opportunity, on the slightest of pretext, and at the drop of a hat ! It raises one's spiritual level by several notches up! That's it ! I often wonder - why does some people always try to evolve a story out of nothing ! Perhaps, leg - pulling and back - biting is their favourite pastime !

Some of the audience are of the opinion that Mehdi Sahab was God gifted singer but I do not agree with them. He acquired this brilliance and perfection through his sheer hard work, devotion and dedication towards music over a period of decades since his childhood. Such dedication is hardly found in singers. It was his deep interest in maushikee that he developed the ability to understsnd intricacies of different ragas and then portraying it perfectly woven in his gazals .... Portrayal of Yeh bhi kya jeenay mein jeena hai bagair unke adeeb.... tells the whole story....
