Ustad Salamat Ali Khan said he couldn't get himself to sing Darbari for 6 months after listening to Mehdi Saheb for the first time. It was this ghazal. Even after 6 months, he said he would start darbari "magar Mehdi ke sur aise' yaad aate thae ke wahin rok de taa thaa. This is the same Salamat Ali Khan who would perform Darbari for the audience for 3 hours, come home and start darbari again. When he heard Khan Saheb Mehdi for the first time, he asked his son for a few hundred rupees ( a lot back then), got up, and went to the stage. Mehdi Saheb stopped the raag, Khan Saheb aap kiyun uth gae? Salamat Ali Saheb responded "Tum gaa sakte ho yeh to jaanta thaa magar aaj patta challa tum Gaviye ho." That's the biggest compliment anyone can receive from a classical singer. 1977 there was a huge show in London, all big names were there, Jagjit, Ghulam Ali, etc. When MH started his performance Salamat Ali quipped "Baaqi saare Kuze' (a small water container) se samandar tak pohanch ne ki koshish kar te' haen. Mehdi Samandar ko kuze' mein band kartaa hae.

Mehdi Hasan sings like a Yogi ,in conversation with the Almighty. He sings ,as if for giving peace and pleasure to his own soul .In the process his nectar like voice envelops the listener in his magical singing . There is no one like him . His choice of Ghazals is also remarkable .

No matter how many views these bolly and Hollywood songs can get, none of them can match the beautiful aura and the subtle peace that is in khan sahab's voice.

These are God's very own men, rather his replica. What a mesmerizing singing!! I feel goosebumps every time I listen.

I, M.A. Hashmi attended Mehdi Hassan's Concert In Jeddah KSA in 1981 Ist Time, with Pir Bukhash Tabla Nawaz, I can't forget performance of both Artists how fine it was.

He outclassed in this ghazal the whole subcontinent. Versatile and indigenous, so a crispy and equally the rythem of melodies of vocal surpassed the uniqueness of the rhymes of the eloquence of the poetry of rare kind.

Mehdi Hassan saab was not just a singer he was a university. Shahen shah e Gazal for sure... like if you agreee

Recorded without any rehearsal in Darbari Kanda( one of the most difficult Ragas). But sung so beautifully and with love, left no scop for further improvement. Great. Mahdi Jee. Great.

Ultimate. Out of this world. My profound tributes to a great man.

Mehndi Hassan is an all time master of gazals. I have been his fan since 1983. Never even once could i feel a flaw in his singing.

You are right... both nations share same classical music and both sides have great respect for all great classical musicians no matter which country they belong to. Indeed, I can say, there is not as much similarity in any other field of life as both nations have in music. I have often observed more comments from Indians on most of the performances of Pakistani legendary musicians and singer and also observed most of the comments are from the people who have deep knowledge of classical music.

Mehdi Hassan Sahib has immortalised this Ghazal for times immemorial. It touches the deepest part of your soul & there is nothing parallel to this I ever heard. Truly, Goddess Saraswati used to reside in his throat !

My absolute favourite Ghazal of Ustad Mehdi Hasan saab

Now I know why I appreciated Raag Darbari Kanada so much. It is the most difficult one to sing. But I love it and Mehdi Hassan ji did complete justice to this incredible piece of creation. It truly shows the talent, love and appreciation for his own art and towards the field of ghazal singing. He was at par with other ghazal singers because of his deep knowledge of using specific Raag for a ghazal based on a certain situation. He was truly one of a kind. And the incident where Salamat Ali ji praised Mehdi Hassan ji was probably at this event. This is truly a precious piece from the pages of history.

There will be no one like him... divine voice ..and completely out of world experience to listen to Gazzals from Master,,,

The Kalam of deceased poetess Parvin Shakir was marvelous.The melody of Darbari enhanced it's beauty.The deceased singer and maestro of Ghazal ,shahinsha of classical music Mehdi Hasan saheb made the Ghazal so wonderful that it gets in our memory for ever.

Parveen shakir's lyric was no doubt classic romantic, but in addition to her creation Mehdi Hassan's baritone voice with darbari raag made this ghazal immortal in support of Tari Khan's hands on tabla. Every ghazal singer afraid of this ghazal but every ghazal lover embraced this ghazal. Departed soul always survive in our million hearts.love from Assam.

my dear .... Jagjit is our fav too .. but just check the history .. he also tried to sing in Mehdi sb's medaan ... he always tried to follow him ... Jagjit has his own color .. never mend things just for ur own satisfaction .... enjoy the music ;)

Apart from musical/sheer bliss, mammoth offerings of knowledge for the right ear and mind, RIP Khan Saheb and the 161 soulless steeds.
