I towed a 5,000lb camping trailer from AZ to PA and back with my 2022 Nissan Frontier and it did a GREAT job. Much better towing than my 2003 Tundra. The Frontier was powerful, quiet, and stable. Transmission picked a gear and held it. It was a very low-stress journey in the Frontier. Fantastic truck.

I'm a boomer who has fond memories of the older pickup trucks we all loved in their day, but... it's easy to forget that the relative dimensions (LxWxH and weight) of modern midsized pickups are roughly the same as full sized trucks of the 70s/80s/90s with more horsepower and torque, better brakes and MUCH better safety/convenience tech. We're lucky to still have these tools for our work/play needs.

I fully agree with your comment, with One glaring exception ! Bed size! A truck should be built to haul items in it's bed.I have a 2004 GMC reg. cab short box. Six and a half foot bed length, a sheet of plywood easily fits between the wheel wells flat on the floor and just past the tailgate in length. I am 5 ft. 9 in. tall and can reach over the sides and pick up items of the bed floor. Please tell me which dealership I can go to that can match those criteria points.

I love these Ike Gauntlet videos. It was enjoyable to see them all compared in one video. The normally aspirated engines suffer at high elevations compared to the turbo engines. I suspect long-term, they will be more reliable since they're not relying on an expensive turbo to make all that torque for pulling. I don't really tow, but I need a 6ft bed. That wipes out this entire lineup except for Tacoma and Frontier. I currently drive an old Colorado and it's been a great little workhorse. I've maxed out the 1,610 lbs payload several times over the years.

(I'm currently leaning towards the Frontier and Ranger - fell in love with the Frontier at an auto show, but the Ranger seems to really pack a punch).

Way to go, Colorado! Very thorough and entertaining review.
Always a fun shoot with Mr.Truck, and heck of a job grabbing all this info guys. There was one wrinkle I caught with the 35-60 test. The Ranger was a second quicker than the Colorado there, so it should have gotten the 5 points alone, the Colorado 4 points, The Tacoma 3, the Frontier 2, the Gladiator 1. Also, The Colorado uphill time was 7:54, the Ranger 7:50. There was the hiccup on the Ranger run with the tunnel being closed, but you had to slow down before you stopped the clock, and the signal light you use as the end marker was only a few car lengths ahead. You listed them as tied on this one again, as I know your metric is the 8:00 mark. That being said, the actual time should be the tie breaker, as the "8 miles" isn't exactly 8 miles anyway. I have no dog in this fight, but those things did jump out at me. While you guys have all of these trucks, you should do a Dyno test to see what they all are producing at the wheels. With the Ranger being mid pack on power and torque, yet somehow beating the rest in acceleration unladen and towing, someone's lying somewhere. Again, awesome work gentlemen.

Even this video, if I read it right, Nissan beats Tacoma by the numbers. That being said Andre and Mr Truck seem far less biased to me.

@@thewireman134 Define "unreliable". My 2020 Ranger is at 60K miles with zero issues. I live in Wyoming and drive it a lot at elevation and the turbo is amazing. So much low end torque. You couldn't pay me to go back to a NA shit box. Worse gas mileage and altitude they turn to wheezing crap.
I woke up early and saw this video was released. I guess I will watch it before I go to the lake. The fish will wait. 👍👍
these modern four-cylinder turbos don’t engine brake very well because they’re relatively low compression ratio. I have a built 2.3 L focus ST and I lowered the compression the bottom end and I lost some engine braking performance on track.
Removing the cost aspect and basing it on performance the ranger wins.

Based on the scoring presented. What gave the Colorado the edge was the price. Now if how they weighted the categories is representative of trucking expertise idk… 😅
Not a Nissan guy but right NOW id say its the most reliable.

The Nissan, up the hill, took so long to reach 60 that unless you were speeding up the hill there is no way you finished in under 8 minutes!

I thought the same thing. And with the Ranger they did it in 7 mins 50 sec's. In order to do that, you'd have to average 63.5 mph, if I'm doing the math correctly.
I love the Frontier and I love nostalgia but not together. I dont want to pay to have my truck already look outdated.

I think the Frontier looks modern and probably the best looking midsizer out there! It definitively has an old school vibe too!

I specifically chose my new 2022 Frontier for it's old-school nature. Simple durable workhorse and nothing more. No shame in that.
If I needed a midsize I would go with Ranger! I currently have a Maverick and love it!
Great work, you two! TFL always coming out with great content. I think this just shows that the competition has caught up to the Tacoma. Toyota better hope their reliability reputation keeps going. If not, they got heavy competition!

I loved this video. Now I'd love to see this exact thing with the Ranger raptor, zr2/zr2 bison, TRD pro but include the flex test! I'm in thr market for a mid size offroad truck to tow my small 3200lb camper and want one I can unhook at my destination and go hit the trails!
First truck out of the gate and Mr. Truck is repeatedly fumbling with the iPhone/timer at crucial moments like it is a scorching hot coal. Sheesh! lol. ;-) ;-)
When the Ranger gets the 2.7L it will blow the competition away.

It might feel better towing but the Chevy will still have class leading towing capacity, the ranger is locked in 7500 lbs across the board.
@drewelliott9062

The Colorado with max towing is 7,700 lbs if i remember correctly and it didn't blow away the Ranger with the little 2.3L engine in it so it won't even be close to competing with the performance of a Ranger with a 2.7L in it.

@@drewelliott9062 no it did not blow away with towing. But I am saying, either engine you choose in the new ranger. Towing capacity is the same. If you do the eco boost V6 payload actually goes down but towing capacity remains 7500. So Chevy will still be class leading because it is rated for 200 lbs more.

If you’re towing over 7K on a regular basis you need to upgrade to a full size. These trucks are good for 5K towing if you’re doing it all the time. Never tow regularly at the limits of any vehicle.
Great video. One of your top ones for sure.

You guys are definitely the benchmark on good vehicle reviews.
The problem with midsize trucks is they've gotten a lot bigger over the last 20 years, but rear seat room is horrible, especially in the Frontier. So you're getting a bigger truck, externally, that's more expensive but still has a cramped interior and is less capable than a full-size truck. Doesn't make a ton of sense.
Can't wait to see the Colorado Zr2 Vs the Ranger Raptor Vs Tacoma TRD Pro.
Are your brake applications the same on all the trucks?
This was awesome thanks guys! 👍🏼
