    Cheers! I’m running Ramblers on my gravel bike and I like them, but not in love with them. Their key advantage here in Adelaide for me is that they are available, and cheap! Have been meaning to switch up to the Pirellis but always find that when the time arrives to fit new rubber they are either unavailable or brain-meltingly expensive.

    I've tried quite a few gravel tyres, but I keep coming back to my Maxxis Ramblers. To me, they make all the right compromises. The sidewalls are sturdy enough to maintain good tyre shape under load, but supple enough to provide great feel. The small tread blocks provide excellent straight line speed and confidence-inspiring cornering on bitumen and superb grip on hardpack and easy singletrack. I've completed a lot of 200-300km gravel Audax rides on my Ramblers with no incident. When I want to go faster on easier terrain, I fit my Challenge Gravel Grinder Race tyres or my Compass slicks. When I want to tackle rougher terrain, I ride my XC hardtail with Vittoria Mezcal and Barzo tyres. Thanks for your excellent review. I might try the Pirelli Cinturato M tyres that you recommended next, but then again, I might just stick with Maxxis Ramblers to stroke my cognitive dissonance.

    Thanks for another great review! I would love to see a review of the TUFO thundero or Speedero from you. I've been riding Pirelli gravel H's 40mm for over a year now after your reviews. I saw the Tufo Thundero scored great on bicycling rolling resistance and where I live they are only half the price of the Pirelli's.

    I agree that 700x50 is where I’m leaning towards to max out what my frame can hold and have a bike that can plow through rugged trails. I think you really can’t beat the incredible low price to value of the American Classic. I have the Panaracer SK and that another amazing value, especially for a proven tire when it comes to quality,traction and durability. If you want to spend more for a premium offering, you can go Rene Hurse. Once you get that premium level of course you have more pattern, designs and quality materials from many brands. At that price one must consider that you are double the price so that 1 premium tire that may or may not have 120tpi, 180tpi and 240tpi on some brands. In my opinion higher TPI make a big difference for ride feel. Of course rims and rim width also need to be factored in.

    The fact that you tipped your hat to the gravelking SS for speed piqued my trust in your credibility.. ran those tires in the 43 all season and they are my go to now. But I am kinda tire shopping for bwr Arizona (I’m gonna need more rubber and more tread) and the rambler was starting to look like a front runner but I do agree, the tire tread has been around a bit.. I will definitely be looking to some of your other recommendations in here, cheers

    Was surprised how grippy these were during a gravel road ride with some sand. Comfort is top notch on lower pressure but I have to keep it higher to support my heavier body weight. Plus zero flats since these were installed!

    Rode the Rambler 40 60 TPI Silk Shield at DK200 2018 no issues at all. After I ran through those I've ridden a plethora of different tires including Goodyear Bontrager Ultradynamico. Well on my most recent build I ended up getting some size 45 120 TPI EXO Ramblers and fell back in love with them. They ride beautifully. I totally agree with you on the grip they are not the gripiest but trade off for the multisurface riding with a fair amount of grip is good enough for me at the moment. Plus they are lighter than most tires. Also the price as you said. Still a very viable tire in this market.

    I agree have been running maxis ramblers 45 x 700 and I have hammered these on all sorts of terrain and they have been great, the comfort has been very good, but on wet grass or a small amount of mud they spin out very quickly and they are not as grippy as I expected on loose gravel, however they are pretty predictable and hard wearing plus I have had no punctures that effected the ride despite running over thorns and large rocks. I have just put a pair of Pirelli cinturato tyres on and they seem to be slightly heavier but outperform the ramblers in every way and it is surprising how low you can run them so these are now my all year tyre. It remains to see how they cope with heavy loads and how they wear but they seem very good so far. The other tyres I like are the Teravail Rutland for British winter but can’t seem to get them at the moment.

    @@chychy4568 hi I’m in the gravel m camp as in the uk we get so much varied weather and riding terrain. A lot of of our routes have gravel, but also grass, single track, limestone, etc so I need widest possible range a tyre can cover more than a tyre aimed at a specific type of riding

  • @peterharrington8709

    @peterharrington8709

    Yes. In the UK the M is the better option for off road stuff that can and will often include mud, rocks, broken roads, mountain bike trails and thousand year old rights of way that have seen better days! I actually bought a pair of the H spec ones when they came out and I DO often use them as a rear tyre, especially when I know there will be a good bit of road riding on route. I was lucky enough to get them in 50c width which I think is discontinued now. I figure its more comfort, more traction, more speed and better grip when cornering on the road. So for me... M front... M or H back. I've noticed that Pirelli have brought out another tred option too now.... that is perhaps LESS good! Also, Hutchinson and Bontrager seem to have offerings that look like they come from the same factory, but with their own different tred patterns. SO many options! But speaking personally I can probably easily rely on what I already have for two or three more seasons.😄

    The maxxis rambler and the maxxis ravager were designed for trial and downhill riding. They’re not dedicated gravel tires. I’d love to see you use your “modern” tires against the former, mountain biking, and see if your opinion still stands on which ones are “grippier”.

    I don't know what point you're trying to make. These are gravel tyres branded and marketed as gravel tyres that I've tested as gravel tyres and compared to gravel tyres. Scaling them all up to 2.1" wouldn't change the fact that they're less grippy than something like the Pirelli Cinturato Gravel Mixed Terrain or American Classic Krumbein.

    @@JustRideAdelaide In contrast to their gravel tyres, the Maxxis MTB variants are a lot better and more sought after it seems. @@pascaladl Ditto their road tyres. Maxxis High Road 2022 model is by all accounts an incredible tyre, big step up from the old one (which was already very, very highly rated among those in the know). You can tell the new one by it’s tread pattern which is similar to the Pursuer model. But almost impossible to find (in a 28c at least).

    I had the Rambler in the 40mm version too, got them for the lighter weight (375g as you mention) and some other positive reviews. But I had several punctures in a short time frame; perhaps I just had bad luck since they are working out for you?? Now I'm back on Panaracer GK, but I tried the SS version. The 42mm with balloons to 44mm to 45mm depending on the tire pressure. I'm overall very happy with the GK/SS. Never had issues with any Gravelking tire.
