Good informative video thank you. Great solution to have the mullet setup with the grippier tyre on the front. I think you would enjoy the tubeless tyre experience. I have done this on 3 sets of older wheels and tyres using the “ghetto” system ie using part of a smaller inner tube with valve attached as a sealing bed. It works so well, and has survived a 1/4” shard of glass and a big hawthorn spike without any intervention. One of the setups is on 17mm I.d.rims and 26x 2.1 inch tyres. Worth thinking about.

I've been using ghetto tubeless for 20 years. ZERO pinch or puncture flats in all that time. The only tires issues I've had was tearing out sidewalls on rocks or something due to my own ignorance. Such as,forgetting to pump up tires preride or failing to add sealant. Once you get your particular set up dialed, it's easy!

@@JourdainColeman based on your review, that’s exactly what I was planning to get. In summary, would you recommend them even for mostly road? I would be riding tubeless and ultimately across the US this summer while hitting as much dirt as I can along the way.

​@@vamp9713 I think the 35mm are pretty good on the road. A good balance between absorbing all the bumps and rolling resistance. With tubeless you can also run the pressures a little lower for even more grip 👌🏾 - Overall, a great tyre, I don't think that you will be disappointed. If it's summertime then I assume it will be mainly dry, or surface water (not deep mus) so I think the 35mm would be fine. Overall, I guess you could put it into a simple equation and then decide what's best for you Thinner tyres = Faster & less comfortable | Cover grater distances each day but not as good in the mud Thicker tyres = Slower more comfortable | Cover less distance each day but nice a comfy (don't forget, comfortable can be faster is the terrain is bad faster) Your trip sounds awesome! Where/how long are you planning to ride? 😁

@@JourdainColeman 2 months or so. I live in the Bay Area (near San Francisco) and the plan is to end in Massachusetts. I’d be taking the SS version of these tires rather than the SKs, but I found it very helpful to see how big the tires were once they were actually on your bike. I think the 38’s will be perfect. Jack of all trades master of none. The only reason I was considering bigger is I love to climb so I have a bunch of brutal dirt climbs planned through Utah and Colorado and I was debating on going with a tire better for those specific climbs or if I should focus more on the road riding portion. Since I think I’ll be riding mostly road after Colorado and will still have over 2,000 miles left at that point, I think having something smaller than the 43’s would be best.

Sorry for the delayed reply, Wow! That sounds like an epic trip you have planned. I wish you all the best 👌🏾 I think the 38mm would be the best choice as well. With that many miles being covered the 43's would probably absorb to much of your power. Interesting about the climbing as well, it sounds like there will be some amazing views.

Anything over 35 psi is mad, 45mm to 2.1

Good vid bro, I use the panaracer 38c sk and I just use diff pressures. Road is 40 psi and gravel is 35 psi, really cushy on gravel and fast on knarly texas gravel.

Nice and interesting video. i was slipping and even fell the other day while having my gravelking 38mm, no way i would even put back my "summer" 35 ers back on . It is indeed quite muddy and wet here nowadays. I was searching for some info/feedback and i now i''m sure i'll go for the 43's during the winter and early spring . Tbh i prefer riding my Salsa Fargo with big fat Maxxis ardents but my Cannondale Topstone is actually my "winter bike" so Gravelking SK 43 it will be :)

If you aren't racing, I HIGHLY suggest getting the + version. One more ply where it counts. Currently, I'm riding tubeless and have to top up at least once a month.

One thing I HIGHLY recommend is getting the '+' version as it has an additional ply where it counts. Saves tubes or sealant.

@Jourdain Coleman I checked several U.S. stores and they are available. They cost more than the non-plus version but they offer increased puncture resistance. That is very important in this area.

I've been running the panaracer 700x32 slicks on my Bokeh since jan21. Lov'em. Work well on road and when i fancy the odd off road /gravel section (assuming its not too wet) they are very good.

@@gamaro74 yes, I agree. I’m using the American Classic 700x40c Kimberlite tires now and have the 700x43 Gravel King SS on my second wheel set. The original comment was over a year ago and I rarely use 700x38c now

Looking to put 40c on my triban rc520 that has 17mm internal rim width. Definitely fits frame but you think it’s safe considering the narrow rim width? Just subscribed and love your channel

I just ordered new wheels and planning on getting these tires next. Are the tires tubeless? If yes, do you always use them with tubes? My new wheels are 23mm wide (inner) so I assume 35mm tires would measure even wider which could be a problem due to not having enough frame clearance.

Hi Harish, I believe that they are tubeless compatible, although I've never run them tubeless before. I know that wider tyres work well with a wider inner rim width so good choice there 👌🏾 As for the clearance, it's a guessing game really. The only way to know is to get them on the bike and have a look. If clearance is tight (couple mmm either side) then it's only an issue when mud gets on the wheel, which is mainly in wet conditions. In the end I settled for the 43mm on the front and the 38mm on the back. The wider tyre at the front inspires grip when cornering and braking. The smaller tyre at the back is the biggest I could fit hahaha. I looked online and other people have done the same thing where clearance is an issue. I hope that helps!! 👍🏽

Oh man. I just bought the 43mm for a bike tour through England in September. I'm hoping they're not too slow. But I wonder if it makes a difference given that I'll be touring at 10/12 mph and not necessarily trying to go 15-17mph. I'll be carrying two panniers in the front and and a saddle bag so I'll have a little more weight on. Assuming that the 43s will add more stability? Just thinking out loud here. In case anyone wants to comment. FYI: Riding a Surly Bridge Club with 27.5 tires.

Doe the knows seem to wear down as you ride on road??

Hi Brian! Good question. I would ask, do you ride in the wet? What is more important to you, speed or grip. Comfort vs speed If you ride in the wet often - 38mm If you prefer comfort over speed - 38mm If you want the ability to go on trails - 38mm If you prefer speed over everything - 38mm If it was me, I would get the 38mm. Then if you are on paved roads pump them a little higher, if you go on trails drop the PSI a little and get more grip. It's the best of both worlds. If you are literally on pavement all the time then you could also consider the semi slicks I hope that helps! Safe riding 👍🏽

I would go with the wider 38c. You won’t notice much in resistance but the grip and comfort is worth it. I actually went up to the 43c SS on my bike and they ride pretty quick on asphalt.

Why not run them tubeless? I’ve got a set of CST Pika 700/38c on at the moment but looking at the Gravelking’s in 1.9in for a set of 650b wheels I just picked up. They look pretty good from the reviews I’ve seen and seem to measure up pretty close to the stated size which is good to know.

Unfortunately my wheels are not tubeless compatible. I need to get some that are 😁. I want to convert to tubeless soon, on my road bike and gravel bike! The Gravelkings do get good reviews... I like them personally. Safe riding friend!

@@JourdainColeman You can run most rims tubeless mate. Just use electric tape to seal inside the rim and buildup the sides a little. Super easy hack and saves a load of cash 😁

That's a useful comparison between the two Jourdain. Any particular reason why you went for the same tyre? Did you consider other tyres?

Hey Sameer, thanks for your comment. That's a good question 😁 I like the reviews that the Gravelkings got, so I've stuck with them for now. As we are coming into summer this will be the tyres that I use for summer. I have now also got a 38mm and I'm trialing the 43mm on the front and 38mm on the back. Just for a bit more grip while the weather is still wetter (I really notice how much more grip the wider tyre gets under braking). I was also looking at the Schwalbe G-One 40mm, that also has good reviews and would probably fit in my frame. Maybe I'll give that a try at some point. Coming up to winter I'll swap to proper mud tyres... I have no idea what to choose for that 🤣 Are you a gravel rider? 👍🏽

@@JourdainColeman newbie gravel rider 😄 my fitness story is similar to yours. Was going to the gym and trying to do big compound lifts until last year, and only just started cycling this year. I've got 40mm schwalbe G-one all rounds on mine, came with the bike. I was tempted to change to something more gnarly, but now that it's drying up a bit I'll stick to them until they wear out. My experience so far is that they're good for hard surfaces, wet or dry. But not so good in the mud or sandy roads.

Hey Leo, the tubes that I use can be used in both the 32mm and the 43mm. On the inner tube box (and written on the tube sometimes) it it tells you the width that it can be used for. Chances are if it fits the 32mm then it will work in the 43mm. Give it a try and see what happens. 👌🏾

What can you recommend? Im riding 1-2hrs everyday, mostly on pavement 70/30 30 percent being mixed rough pavement and light gravel, and I only ride on daylight no wets,im 58kg. Im opting on GK SS 35c or GK SS 38c😢😅 pls help me choose before i miss the sale

I think that you would be happy with both. Given the conditions you ride and the fact that 70% is paved, I'd go for the 35mm for the extra speed. 👍🏽

The 35mm do look good. To be honest there isn't much difference between the 35mm and the 38mm. If you have the space in your frame, get the 38mm 👌🏾

Yes, I think it may do a little bit. The tyre will have a better more curved profile and less like a mushroom of that makes sense.

Were you not aware there was a 38 available when you did this? Maybe you wanted to go that much smaller since you mentioned the commuting? I would have rather seen the difference VW between the 38 and 43, especially since that’s such a big jump compared to the 35-38..

This would work. I now have the 43mm on the front and a 35mm on the back. This works well. The front tyre does a lot for your braking and steering so having the larger tyre at the front is beneficial. Ive ridden this for quite a while and I'm happy with the results.

So basically, the 38 would be the perfect compromise for you?

I have changed since. I now have 38mm on the from and 43mm on the back. 👍🏼

I switched from 35mm to 45mm because I thought I need more comfort but actually they are so much less fun tbh - they are less agile and very sluggish - especially if you wanna accelerate up a hill or even on the straight, they are heavier and you can feel it if you are used to smaller tires. I am going back to 35mm for sure its the optimal width for my taste. I ran the 45 tubeless with 2.2 bar and the better comfort is ofc noticeable but doesn't make up for the speed you loose imho. It felt like riding a rigid MTB.

Where is all this good gravel. Nowt like that where I live. You'd need a 4x4

That is a very narrow rim for a 43mm tyre. That internal width of 17mm is a road tyre rim not a gravel tyre rim. The rim should be around 23 or 24mm minimum

I agree... new gravel wheels are on my list of things to buy. I want 23mm or 24mm rims as you said. For now the wider tyre on the narrow rim still gives better grip. But no ideal. Cheers for commenting 👍🏽

It would depend on how you will use the bike, If it's all off road and gravel then I'de recommend the a wider tyre for more grip. If there is more road then a narrower typre for more speed. Panaracer do a gravelking 43mm which could work for you. Then you can choose knobbly or semi slick 👍🏽
