I am actually currently rocking the setup you are suggesting @ 5:30 (winterish season) - Terra Speed (Front) G-One Allround (Back) and both 35 mm, it feels perfect. Kind of the best of all worlds: Comfort, Speed and Grip. Of course probably not the best in each individual discipline. No experience in terms of lifespan yet though.

Agree with all of your sentiments. The Speeds are sublime on hard pack and dry gravel. Super fast on sealed paths! As with with any tyre design, there are always engineering conflicts. More grip at atomic level means more micro tearing - to reduce that tearing and enhance wear, you need to reinforce the polymer chains with other chemicals that tighten the bonds at molecular level. Think mum and dad car tyres versus F1 tyres... So yes, the compound is astounding with its grip resins in the mix but tread life becomes somewhat sacrificial to traction. And as the tyre is the only thing on a bike that aids grip, I personally would not settle for any less as I'm not wanting to collect any scars soon :) I also run the Terra Trail. The tread blocks are a tad taller and the overall tread pattern is a bit denser. Tread life is better as a result. Trails excel in looser, wetter conditions. Both are fast. Both has have that superb Black Chili tread compound and both feature that robust casing. I like your Bossi. Mine arrives soon! Complete with Terra Trails ;)

I'm running the 35mm Terra Speeds on some Winspace gravel wheels, and they measured in at 35.3mm. I'm using this width/tire for a specific event with equal parts pavement/gravel, but seeing how much I like them after just one short ride, I'll probably try out the wider variants for more gravel-specific stuff.

Your findings with these Continental tires have been pretty much my experience with all my Continental Tires - grippy, reliable, puncture resistant, rolls nice, not great on the lifespan. I order a set (not these in particular) every year and while I'd like to see that higher mileage, they are super reliable. I like it when I have things in my life that I buy and it just works.

I've got a set of RoadSpeeds 42mm which have at least held 1500km and could possibly do another 1500 if it didn't have the problem that my rear tire keeps tearing tubes, I dunno if that's considered a long lifespan.

I have the same experience with the Conti RaceKing's in Black Chili on my XC MTB. Now I leave the brilliant, softer but expensive Black Chili in the front and use the harder, but longer living and way cheaper Performance version in the back. Best of both worlds. The Performance version is not that much slower and skiddier, but has a bit harder and sturdier rubber compount that lasts way longer.

Hi - need some help to select the right gravel tire. I currently have the Bontrager GR2 Team Issue Gravel Tire (700c 40mm) - but get flats all the time (even when i ride on the normal street - 1 week riding - flat - 4 flats on the back tire, 1 flat on the front tire in the last 4 weeks). I got the Tannus Armour Tire Inserts - but that doesnt fix the flat problem. Can you recomment me another gravel tire? which one has the best quality and prevents flats Vittoria, Continental or WTB or something else? My terrain: Road and also some Offroad (forrest with gravel and fine sand). I would say 60% road, 40% offroad. I have a Trek Dual Sport 3 2020 with these rims: Bontrager Tubeless Ready Disc, 32-hole, presta valve. (700c) Can you also recommend a small upgrade on the rims (also with TLR)?

This is a bit late and I'm not the guy in the video, but I can add some perspective on longevity/wear. Overall, if your riding patterns are similar to mine, expect around 1,000 miles before the rear tire basically has no center knobs. I'm guessing the front would last about twice as long if you completely wear down the center knobs, but it might be better to rotate the front tire to the rear before you reach that point. If you lose traction on the rear, you'll skid the back a little, but usually no big deal. If you lose traction on the front you are much more likely to lose control. Details: I purchased my first pair of Continental Terra Speed tires on August 10 and it's now October 14 (2 months and about 950 miles later). At this point, the rear tire is almost completely bald in the center of the tread, but I have not yet cut into the base between the knobs. The cornering knobs are still in good shape, which is something at least. By contrast, the front tire still looks okay (the center knobs have lost some height, but are still in decent shape). I've been riding a lot of hilly terrain with about 50% dirt roads and 50% pavement and often >1000 feet/mile of elevation gain. I weigh about 150 lbs. So they've seen a lot of climbing. Maybe the rear tires would last a bit longer with flatter riding? Climbing definitely asks a lot of a rear tire. For reference, I've run lots of Gravel King tires (the smooth, no-tread version) and a rear GK slick typically lasts about 1,200 miles, while the front GKs last about twice as long. I actually found his review when I was searching for other people's experience with tire wear. Yeah, they don't last that long. And they are expensive. But they are nice tires.

Hey Dan, I haven't tried those. I did the Mawson Trail in 2019 and 2 of my ride buddies used them for the whole trip. They seemed really good and I think that tread pattern looks great, especially for where I live BUT I want them to be wider! A 43 mm would be so sick and that's the width I want next after the 38mm Schwalbe G-One Allrounds, and 40mm Continental Terra Speeds are gone. I miss the thicc tyres!

I'm running them on Mavic Ksyrium (road wheels, 19mm Internal) and they measure 41. I would recommend, run them on my 650b in 47c as well. I'm using the 33s (got it free!) on the rear of my singlespeed and they're a surprisingly grippy tire on mellower yet steep mtb trails. Haven't given them a good beating on my local rocky trails yet! No bueno once it gets very wet though. Probably why they're called 'dry'! We'll see how long they last. My favorite gravel tire in drier conditions are the Donnelly(Clement) Xplor MSO. Clement MXP or PDX once the trails get sloppier. Clement make wonderful tires! I used their silk tubs way back in the day. Conty has always treated me well too. They make high quality tires too. Just avoid WTB, the quality is inconsistent. Its a shame, they have nice treads. They're Just not worth the money they're asking. As a mechanic I sell lots of tires. I can't recommend WTB. I almost refuse to sell them!

While Conti makes great road tires they have miserably failed in the Gravel dept. They wear fast, won't seal properly tubeless and at that price point they should at least then be stellar to ride which doesn't seem the case. I have tried a few gravel tires myself in the past few years: Challenge, Schwalbe, Panaracer. All ok. In the end I settled for Rene Herse which are worth every penny. They last, they are grippy, they are fast and they look the part. And for puncture resistance you just need to pick the casing suited for you: extralight if you feel adventurous but want to ride on clouds, regular for a great allrounder and endurance and endurance+ for more rugged conditions. Tires is settled a subject for me.

May have to look at the all arounds. I ran the Gravelking SK and also didn’t really like their performance, felt sluggish and slippy. My biggest surprise tires choices recently is a set of 45c WTB Riddlers I have on my Topstone Alloy and a set of Soma Cazedero 650bx50 on my 3T Exploro. Both are wikked fast rolling tires for the size on every surfsce.

Continental is a German brand, hence their products are cheaper in places where they do not have to be shipped over 10,000 kms away. Plus German mail order companies can exist on extremely low margins, so they can sell such tires at particularly aggressive prices.

  • @DilbertMuc

@@einundsiebenziger5488 Complete nonsense, sorry. The shipping costs per container and individual item are neglegible. The market prices are set by market purchasing power and the maximum exploitation strategy by manufacturers. You can buy a VW, build in Germany, much cheaper in Asia or Russia. And then re-import them to Germany and sell them for a profit. That's why VW or other firms try to criminilize this and refuse to service their products. Continental prices their products as premium in some markets while they have a strong competition (Schwalbe etc.) in home markets.

Mine die a quick death also. I can’t get more than 1500km out of a rear tire! Otherwise they’re great.

I have over 6,000 miles on a Continental GP4000S2 riding a combination of gravel and pavement and the tire is still fine. I can't believe you are getting that much wear in 250 miles. Are you skidding at every opportunity available?!? That black chili compound really isn't transitioning well from a slick to a knobby.

Haha, no unnecessary skidding. It's the raised knobs. A smooth surface, or a more dense tread pattern, spreads the load a lot more. I've moved onto a set of Pirelli Cinturato Gravel M which are doing really well for tyre wear because they have a raised centre tread.

Attributing characteristics of the Conti TerraSpeed to tread pattern, and tread pattern alone, is a clueless thing to say. Not once did I hear mention of rubber compound, and this is the true secret to how Conti dials in tire performance.

Continental notoriously undersizes their tyres to cheat the rolling resistance performance benchmarks. Same happens with their road bike tyres. They advertise a tyre with superb rolling resistance, and you think you are getting super fast and wide tyre at the same time, but you don't. You just run undersized tyre, which obviously will have lower rolling resistance than competitor's that has accurate sizing.

Wear out very slowly and still talking in same sentence about G-One Allround? Man.. those wear out very fast. But roll so nice on pavement and easy gravel roads.

I was happy with the life I got out of my G-One Allrounds. 1,500km and I reckon at least 500km more in the rear tyre remaining before I had to switch to another review tyre. They're still going on a mate's bike!

all these modern gravel tires are so much better set up tubeless. most of them are light and have thin compound. they are really bad with tubes but excellent without.

haha....spoken like a true roadie. its not tarmac, you won't have perfect grip 100% of the time. gotta learn how to 'surf' the gravel, shifting weight/weighting the outside of the bike, etc...these are off-road riding basics

ooook, but that doesn't change the fact that these tyres destroy GravelKing SKs for grip ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
