I actually went 32mm Gatorskin because I mainly ride on asphalt but want to be able to take also rougher gravel paths. Silent on pavement, but can take fair beating. The bike is Masia Special Randonneur. One bike for everything outside MTB.

My golden rule is to buy what's on special. Tyres from a year or two ago are often much cheaper and usually just as good.

My golden rule? Well since Covid, shortages and the fact that I live on the edge of the world (in terms of availability of anything) I just get what I can get my hands on. A mediocre tyre does not make riding NOT FUN, it just makes it more challenging, and we all like a challenge, don’t we? 😅

My golden rule Schwalbe G-One RS or Specialised Pathfinder gravel tyres - currently running the Schwalbe G- One RS in 40c and loving these tyres - I have run WTB Riddlers in 700c, they were ok but mostly they looked good with tan walls

It's not just about which size fits into your bike but about how the wheels feel. You want the optimal inertia for every width. That means 622 mm for up to 32 mm, 584 mm for 42 mm and 559 mm for 56 mm and more.

I completely agree. Wider tires, wider rims, tubeless and inserts. Personally I use CushCore on all my gravel and MTB wheel sets. I carry extra sealant and the 🥓 tire plug repair kits. Rarely ever get a flat that needs a tube inserted but carry a TPU tube just in case.

TPU works much better for me than tubeless. It's lighter, less messi and easier if you want to change tires. 👋🏻

Pirelli Cinturato ! No loss of PRESSION, no punctures for the past 9 months, good grip, extremely durable and made in France. You can't go wrong with those underrated tires. Tried Schwalbe, Hutchinson (worst), Vittoria, Specialized, WTB, MAXXIS....

Pirelli Cinturato Gravel M. Been on it for two years now. Great on the pavement. Great on the gravel. Only niggle, it only comes in 35c and 40c. 40c won't fit on my frame (rear). So I'm running the 35c. Would kill for a 38c.

Could you give me advice please. I recently bought Pirelli Cinturato M 35c. It was a good deal, so I didn't think about it much. I will travel off-road as much as possible, but I will spend a good amount of time traveling on pavement. It's a like a weekend bikepacking adventure. Will they be too slow and noisy on the road? Should I give it a go, or should I sell them and buy something else?

  • @jonathanrobinson2628

Golden rule? On tyre width, a simple formula is a great place to start when choosing your tyre. Bodyweight x 0.3 + 15. For me, at just over 100kg, that is 100 x 0.3 + 15, which equates to 45. That is the minimum tyre width I'll generally use, though I'll occasionally drop to a 40mm when I need something fast on smooth gravel. I've gamed out the formula at all bodyweights, and it seems to work well.

There is a huge factor that you always miss: weight of rider and extra loads. If you weigh upwards of 100kg, you will need very strong wheels, so 650b MTB wheel set will be stronger than the average 700c. It will also change the needed tire pressure and a wider tire will be better.

Congrats on missing the all-rounder in WTB’s lineup: the Nano 40. I’ve ridden that year-round and the wear pattern proves the tire’s versatility. The continuous central lug strip takes most of the wear on tarmac (it’s what balded first), while the very aggressive and widely-spaced edge lugs provided tremendous purchase and excellent shedding in snow and mud. Good rolling on the smooth stuff and great bite in the sloppy. Yeah, the tread pattern was borrowed from an MTB tire. Is that why you don’t like it? Or could you not recognize the function in the form?

Can somebody please help me, I'm so confused about tires. I got Pirelli Cinturato M gravel 700x35. It was a nice deal, so I didn't think much about it. I want to travel on dirt and gravel as much as possible, but I will also spend a decent amount of time on pavement. Will these tires slow me down? Will they be too noisy for the road? Are they too narrow for true off-road? Should I sell them and get something else? I will do longer trips, weekend backpacking, and maybe longer. I will constantly switch between different surfaces. Can someone please recommend me something?

Hardly a trend when CX has been around decades buddy gravel bikes are just bigger and comfier for longer distances MTB are great but too slow and hard work for the long days in the saddle with what could be 80/20 road to gravel ride.
