This is definitely the best and the most sensible tire review i’ve heard for a long time. I intend to buy a pair of these tires soon and set them up tubeless on my new gravel bike, which came with a pair of Vittoria Terreno Dry that are useless in mud, and rather prone to going flat on rough terrain. Thanks for the review. I have purchased my first gravel bike ever and got the stock tires changed with Pirelli Cinturato Gravel Mixed with tubeless setup after watching your reviews.

I was so happy with the Cinturato H that I recently installed the M for winter. Living in Canada we have limited time to ride a 45 mm tire in the snow. But I have gotten out on them and the traction is insane. Yesterday I did a 50 km mixed terrain ride that combined pavement, gravel that was pure mud and slop and 5 kms of a iced over gravel walking path. I replaced the Rene Herse Juniper Ridge (which are super grippy) with these and the Cinturato M are staying on, just amazing traction, even on ice and snow. I seated these tubeless with a regular track pump on the first try, my compressor broke, how impressive is that. I am now an official Pirelli fan boy.

I bought a pair of these when I saw your previous review. I ride from home (San Francisco) to the gravel and was worried about your "vagueness" on the road. But after seeing this review, I'm not so hesitant about riding on the roads with the mixed terrain (M). I haven't had to change my tires yet, but the time is coming soon. Thanks so much for your thorough reviews!

I got a pair of these tires thanks to your reviews and they are outstanding. I've never been so confident on a trail and they are not much slower on the pavement then the vittoria terreno zeros I was running. Did you end up trying H in rear and M on front? How was it?

I went with the gravel H and it immediately became my new favorite tire, thinking maybe I should try the M as well now.

You convinced me! Just ordered a set of 650b/50mm to replace ageing (not worn) GKs. Can't wait to plop them on and see how they handle the ever changing Flemish surfaces.

Just done the same following your review. Amazing tyre ... great mix of grip and rolling.

Ride them since 3000 km and they´re still fine. Even after heavy bike packing tours in rough terrain.

I have these in 40c and run them at 40&45psi. About 1500km in, they got 4-5 punctures within 150-200km. Only ever had one puncture before wich sealed perfectly with tubeless milk. Now, one of the new punctures does not seem to seal. I get tubeless milk splattered onto my seatpost every ride. Front tyre still zero punctures. Found them so great, bought a new rear one.

Ive been using them in 45c for 1kkm now and I love them. Super grip and still rolling pretty fast :)

@@chychy4568 no problem - he does a review of the H as well if you search his vids! Basically if you will use this for a true mix of terrains - gravel, singletrack, road etc all year round (dry and some wet conditions) and don't want to keep switching tyres, go for the M (m for mixed). If you want a fast rolling tyre with predominant use on dry gravel, road and occasional drier singletrack conditions then go for the H. But this dude loves the M because they are an amazingly versatile tyre.

Can't wait for your GK SS review. I've been riding them since they came out. I have to ride tarmac to get to the gravel and these tires are quick.

@@Thomas-fy9yc i have the bontrager carbon wheels with 25mm internal rim width and the tire ended with 45.1 width after I measured it with caliper. Best bang for your buck.

James...I’ve done about 1000km on these tubeless Cinturatos and I’m having the same reliable experience. I’m using 35c (due to clearances on my frame), these tyres have tank-like grip in English winter mud, I can ride across pretty much anything, I just dive in and keep pedalling!

I have 1,300 Miles on a set of Ms. 70% of it rural chip and oil in very poor condition, 30% of deep deep gravel and river wash stone. This tire ROCKS! You can't beat their confidence building in the worst of deep loose gravel. I run Tubeless. Total kit weight including myself is about 220 lbs. I run 28 PSI in the front and 31 PSI in the back. I would buy them again.

Awesome review. Loving this channel dude. Grip > Rolling resistance 👌 I’m riding this type of bike to have fun and not set some sort of record. Do you track tire mileage with Strava? I’m thinking about doing something similar for my reviews.

4:22 $100 for a bike tyre my first reaction was f$%k! Those Bridgestones I just put on my car costed only $115 per corner fitted and balanced! By the way a Pirelli Cinturato P6 car tyre is only $125 and you'd expect 10x the life span. Bike tyres profit margin is ridiculous.

More precison needed is what makes these bike tyres expensive. Bike tyres need to be thin, uniform, strong, and have tiny teeny well designed tread pattern. The mould machining dictates the price, not the rubber material needed. Not to mention the casing material engineering really dictates the ride quality.

Good review. I reckon the mountain bikers are better off with lower grip tyres when they go to gravel as they are used to the bike sliding around more and can handle it. Depends though how much they were "under tired" on the mtb and level of experience.

These are now my favourite tyres and I don’t even have a set yet! Last year I went with the conti Terra on your advice so I’m gonna follow on with the Pirelli. Great review as usual.

Thanks for the review. Got them following your review. Love the grip and rolling resistance. Coming to this from Road and started on the WTB Sendero (stock tyre on the gravel bike). They are great for winter mud but with the weather getting better in the UK, I wanted a faster rolling tyre but still have grip for dense gravel and single track bits. Thanks again

Just slapped these Bad Boys in the 700 x 45c flavour. I had Teravail Washburn semi-slick they’re okay. These roll better over tarmac and gives confidence over the CHONK. By far the best all round gravel tire. I think they pair well with wide drop handlebars. James you’ve singlehanded cost me the most money of all the cycle channels I frequent! Bike purchases because of you: Bontrager Aeolus comp saddle Wide drop bars (PNW coast 52 cm) 2017 Bombtrack Beyond Plus Bombtrack BPC fork Carbon wheel sets for both Bombtrack and my gravel bike. Also.a big fan of these tyres and use them on a 700c wheel set. Disappointing they don't come in wider sizes though, especially 650b (thinking something like a 54m / 2.1"). How do you think they compare to something like the G-One Bite or Panaracer GravelKing SK (which do come in wider 650b sizes)? - looking for something comparable (or potentially more on the grippy side) for my big volume setup.. thanks.

Just watched your video of the Manson Trail. You used a massive tire and it failed in the sidewall for the second time. I purchase the Pirelli Centurato Mixed 650 b 50mm. I am doing a rough track for 7 days unsupported, the Oregon Outback trail. Will this be enough tire? Your video also showed an Apidura feed bag you didn’t much care for. Try the Revelate Design feedbags. Simple and excellent closure!

Hey Dave, my tyre failures were because of shitty tyres rather than actual damage from riding the trail! I'd absolutely ride these tyres on the Mawson. They'd be excellent and 650x50 would be a nice size. The only problem will be deep mud which no tyre will be good at. At least these will be a good option among gravel tyres!

It's a shame the gravel tyre market limits itself to 47-50mm for the 650b option. There are plenty of bikes out there with up to 2.1-2.5" tyre clearance but left with only aggressive MTB tyre options. Manufacturers need to step up the tyre widths now!

Honestly if you have the clearance for 2.1+ I would go with thunder Burt’s and just never question it (assuming that’s the volume you need)

I use that setup, a 40c M on the front and 35c H on the rear, for me the best combination.

Have you tried the WTB Resolute or Teravail Rutland? I am looking at these 3 options and cant decide, it seems all 3 get good reviews.

I am looking for all-purpose tyres with a bias toward good performance in the UK mud. Do you think the Pirelli's are better than the Teravail Rutlands, WTB Venture, and WTB Resolute?

Hi, I got them in the 700x45 to replace my pathfinder pro 38s. On my mixed tarmac and gravel 100km loop, my average speed is as good with lower watts on the Cinturatos, which is great. I’m not 100% convinced they are the right tyre on really loose pea gravel. Had a few pretty scary slides on them yesterday, but as you mentioned almost anything will suck on pea gravel. Any other tyres/tread patterns you would recommend for the pea gravel? I have official clearance for 47s. Regards

Im running the WTB Resolutes in 700x42mm they air up to 44+change on my 21mm ID rims tubeless, I think they do pretty damn good on pea gravel, thats the majority of riding that I do on them. I dont own a set of tires that Ive yet to wear out lol Im always on the search for the perfect tire for pea gravel and loose chonky gravel, the Resolutes are pretty damn close to beeing perfect, right now Im deciding between the Teravail Rutlands in 47mm or the Cinturato M's in 45mm. The search continues!!

Cant wait for SS review too, I used them and I kinda like them. Now building another set of wheel and thinking to try these Cinturato. BTW, do you think it's silly to use Gravel M front and H on the rear?

Nothing silly about M on the front and H on the rear. I've had quite a few people ask me that and I reckon there's some wisdom to it.

Question - have you played with mixing tires like you would in XC MTB? Like would you consider a Cinturato Gravel H for the rear and a Gravel M for the front? Much akin to the beloved Maxxis Aspen/Rekon Race combo for 29ers

If you're on a tight budget the Schwalbe Smart Sam offers a similar tread from $30. Stops hard as you like on gravel and rolls OK on paved surfaces. Not designed for tubeless, but that works out OK when switching to/from GP5000.

You mention these are "vague" while cornering on tarmac. Curious what kind of limits they have descending on road, and if there's a better all around option for mixed descents. A lot of the rides/races around me require a climbing and then descending on tarmac to get to a good gravel loop. And I've definitely had trouble on my 42mm Specialized Pathfinder when trying to scrub speed going downhill without washing out.

Hey, it's been like a year so you probably found a solution hahah. The Gravel H version of this tyre would possibly have a slightly faster centre tread but the side knobs are very pronounced in comparison to the centre so would probs not be great either. He did recommend recently the Panaracer Gravelking SS for drier conditions (and I think he said it is faster too) - the tyre profile is more rounded, and the transition from centre tread to side knobs is much more graduated and I think this would be a good compromise if you want a gravel tyre that performs better on road. Check out his review!

Are they good for commuting during winter on asphalt and gravel on weekend?

hi there, love your tire reviews. This one sold me on the pirelli's. I riding contidion is 50% dry and 50% wet and ride terrain is 40% road 30% gravel and 30% mud. Are the Pirelli's suitable for this ride conditions? could you suggest better alternatives if any?

What would you recommend for a gravel tire in the width range 47-52 mm purely for racing? Assuming I don't need loads of knobby grip and the conditions are dry.

Hey buddy, I'm deciding between this Pirelli and the Gravel King SK 50 for my Cutthroat for gravel on broken terrains, but also for a smooth ride on asphalt in between. I need good grip in wet conditions, dry, or mixed terrains for riding in Melbourne and gravel route around Victoria Here are the things I consider for comparison: - Grip on wet terrain - Grip on dry terrain - Grip on muddy terrain - Wear resistance/wear rate - Rolling resistance - Puncture resistance - Cornering ability - Ease of mounting/seating - Better value for money Which of these options should I go with? Also, any other recommendations?

I'm also thinking about replacing a rear Schwalbe X-one with a Cinturato velo, on my bike... they have very high puncture resistance (on paper). Or maybe both.

Any update on your mentioned gk ss review. I'm thinking of switching to the purely and wondered how it compared. Ive used the gk ss and found them a pain to mount even with an air compressor. I'm currently using vittoria terreno dry and they were a dream to mount and doable with a standard floor pump

The test period on the GravelKing SS is done, I just need to make the video...At the risk of giving away too much, I really like the SS. Totally different to the Pirelli Cinturato Mixed terrain though. If you mostly pound compacted gravel then the GravelKing SS are brilliant. If you need more grip to shred then get the Pirellis.

Hmmmm, I don't think the H would last quite as well given how much less tread is on it. I had some puncture issues too that some others have reported in the comments under my video review. Check those out before you spend money ✌️

These are 40mm and I typically used 30-35 psi in the front and 35-40 in the rear depending on weather and riding conditions.

@@Thomas-fy9yc I guess it depends where the widest point is, I have seen a bit of variety in that whether it be the side wall or the widest piece of tread. I measured them to be 47mm at the widest point with verniers.

I usually count the side knobs in the width, guess I could mount them and see if it fits, if not then off to eBay or save them for my hopefully near future Surly bike packing rig.

$100 for tire is a joke. i have been ride for a long long time, beside a set of gatorskin tires....i have never bought brand new tires. Bought used tires for pennies.

Have to disagree. A set of Maxxis ramblers in British money are £45 each. They’re on the cheap end of a good tyre and they’ve lasted me less than 1200km before needing binned. (Probs should have done it 200km ago) I think if a tyre is giving you more performance, grip, less weight and better durability by a measure of 100%. As with anything that offers that much more over competition, I think they’re within their rights to demand a little more cash. Especially when that extra cost is marginal at a measly £10 extra each.
