Pirelli Cinturato Gravel M 50x650b Tire Review

#TireReview #PirelliCinturato #GravelM
Tire choice is crucial when it comes to a gravel bike’s ability to take on the unknown. Tire width, tire pressure and tire thread all contribute greatly to where and how the bike can be ridden. With this in mind, I recently decided to go all in with my gravel bike and maxed out the tire size that I can run on my 3T Exploro. I decided to go with the whopping 50mm wide Pirelli Cinturato Gravel M tires fitted to 650b wheels and the result has been the most entertaining bike setup I’ve ever ridden. In this video, I’ll walk you through my experiences with the Pirelli tires and provide a breakdown of its performance thus far.

I am considering this tire as well, and for similar use to yours. I have dedicated road and gravel wheelsets, so my 650B setup sees little tarmac. This may be the perfect tire for me! That was a great review with great and to the point information, well done sir! Thanks!

Now that's how a tire review should be like, awesome job! Versatile review of a versatile tire! I was already interested in this tire one year ago and even ordered it, yet ultimately decided to choose the Vittoria Terreno Dry in 640b x 47 because the Cinturato had few reviews online, whereas the Vittorias were a widely popular tire with great reviews. There have been new reviews of the Cinturato in 2020, however yours is the first one of the 650b x 50 that I've been eyeing on! So hats off for making this content 🙂 I especially appreciate that you shared the actual width of the tire with the rim inner width mentioned. Even more importantly from my point of view, the review included testing on snow, which is exactly what I'm planning these tires for! In Finland the winter is long and I've noticed the Vittoria Terreno Dry is definitely showing its weakness in such conditions (obviously it's a dry condition tire, so no wonder), so looking for something else but not wanting to go with studded tires as we don't really have ice on the roads but rather snow. Particularly the fact that you mentioned no loss of traction when out of the saddle was highly appreciated. Small details but extremely valuable! On Vittorias I'm even having a bit fun intentionally skidding on them when out of the saddle 🙂 With regards to the recommended tire pressures marked on the sidewall, I reckon the manufacturers tend to be on the conservative side as usual to cover their bases (after all, I don't think they want to advise for lower minimum pressure so as not to risk denting the rim). For instance, Vittoria recommends over 2 bars on their mountain bike tires (2.25"), yet they can and should be ridden at lower pressures than that (if running over 2 bars on such a tire, it would get quite rough and bouncy on the trails! 😅). Lots of people doing this including me, you just need to be aware of what's the absolute minimum you can safely go without tacoing your rim 🙃. It's also a matter of puncture prevention if riding with tubes (risk for snake bite punctures if running too low pressure with tubes), however with tubeless setup there is no such an issue, as there's no tube to get pinched between the rim and tire! I would've liked to see the tire weighed on the video. Interestingly, I've seen the 700c x 40 version having a incredible variety in weight on the reviews I've looked at, some state around 479g and some 540g (!). Also, a review on a German bike product website says the 650b x 50 tire weighs 663g, even though the manufacturer's claimed weight is 550g. Now that's over 100 grams of difference on a single tire! That's why I would've appreciated if you were able to provide the weight of the tire you have, but perhaps might be too late at this point when the tires are mounted, especially if mounted tubeless (not sure if it was mentioned in the review if running tubeless/tubes)? An amazing review altogether, keep up the good work! 😊

Kiitos! I really appreciate this comment. This is by far the most detailed comment that I’ve received on this channel to date and I certainly like details. Very glad that you found this so valuable. I visited Helsinki during December a few years ago and know your winter riding conditions well. The rides I did while there were some of the coldest I’ve ever done, but certainly memorable. I’m sure these Pirelli tires will come in very handy in those conditions. About the pressure...Yes I was also thinking that the manufactures just like to be on the safe side. I’ve been testing out lower pressures and have gone as low as 25 psi on some of my trail rides. When it was that soft I didn’t have any issues, but I do remember one occasion when I hit a tree root a bit hard and that bottomed out the tire against the rim. I’ll say that was more rider error than tire error. You’re right about the weight. I wanted to include this, but neglected to check this and film it on the day I fitted the tires tubeless. Sorry that I can’t give you that info at this time. Thanks again for checking out the channel!

@@MountainRoadRide Yeah, no worries buddy, with a weigh-in the review would've been too perfect! 😉 Great to hear you've had a glimpse of the local winter riding scene 😃 The winter (and weather) conditions here (especially in southern Finland) are very variable, with the terrain alternating between bare gravel, slush, ice, and dry or sticky snow, which is exactly what makes it challenging for cycling as there's no tire that can handle it all without compromising performance on one of them. Obviously the cold also sets some challenges, like you mentioned :). Will follow your channel, take care!

@@MountainRoadRide an earlier comment posted stated that it is worth pointing out rim inner width and tire width expansion overtime. I do want to point out, just in case your 650b tires are too wide, my 650b Donnelly stradas started as 50mm measured on the hunt wheels and as of today they have expanded slightly over 52mm. I'm contemplating whether I should keep them on for the February monstercross race outside of Richmond.

Great review! I just ordered a set for my new gravel bike - looks like I made a good choice! One thing... I say this just to try to be helpful, (not being critical) but when you say "thread", you really mean to say "tread". Thread is what holds your clothes together. Tread is what's on a tire (or the bottom of a shoe).

Great review. I have had these 650b hunt wheels for two years and two sets of tires, 47 specialized pathfinders and 50c Donnelly strada. I have used these from the local network of forest trails in Montgomery County to the C&O canal with no issues and all comfort. On tarmac, they do run slower than my previous 700x40 setup. I am looking to upgrade to xc 27.5 tires as I tend to favor rough gravel over taamac. The vittoria mezcal and teravail echline are on my short list. See you around the area!

Hi! I haven't tested these tires on a hookless rim yet. My understanding is that the hookless rim manufacturers will specify which tubeless tires they recommend. To be 100% sure I'd suggest that you ask your wheel company first. That said, the tire bead of the Cinturato Gravel M tires are really well made. Very sturdy beads, and I don't see why they won't be a perfect candidate for hookless rims.

  • @MountainRoadRide

They both fall into the aggressive tread category for sure. The Nanos only give you one width option (40mm), whereas Pirelli gives you 2 sizes with 650b and 3 sizes for 700c with the Cinturatos. I also think that the Nanos aren’t as good in very wet and muddy conditions since the knobs are much smaller compared to the Cinturato Gravel M. Nano might be a bit quicker in a straight line, but the Cinturatos give better cornering ability thanks to outer knobs.
