Masters of The Universe Revelation First Impressions

Фильм және анимация

Here it is everyone. My first impressions from the Masters of The Universe: Revelation. It's a real mixed bag for me. There are some elements of it that I like, and then there are some elements that make me wonder what the writing team was thinking. To say nothing of how the series was promoted.

I was so excited for this from the trailers, only to get the old bait and switch. I’m not against Teela being the main character she has an interesting backstory that could be explored if handled well, but unfortunately that was not the case with revelation. I am morbidly curious to see where this goes, but with a high body count from revelation I do not have high hopes for this. Also if they kill off Cringer in part 2 then fuck this series.

Nitpick: You say there is no character development for Teela, but going from rejecting magic, and being frightened of her own destiny/heritage, to instinctively using magic, by way of briefly embracing said destiny/heritage, is a change in character - whether or not it's the change you wanted. Though the scene is rather ham-fisted, and not as easy to parse first time through as it probably should have been. I agree it should have been longer. Though unfortunately they clearly want to save that revaluation for Part II.

lemme just spare you the pain. She basically becomes the best sorceress ever, she gets all the powers, she is able to say fuck you to Grayskull's need for the Sorceress to be trapped in the Castle as the Curator and having to relinquish her attachments, in order for her to be an impartial guardian of Eternia, one that stays away from Society so no one can claim allegiance to her other than He-Man as a helper and mentor. And she either remains single or in a relationship with Andra, who is now Man at Arms. There is basically no character growth other than Magic bad, technology good then back to magic good And of course Evil-lyn gets a tragic back story, just so they can redeem her....despite her having destroyed the Afterlife, both Heaven and Hell, and all Souls that dwelled there. Women cannot want power and be evil for evil's sake due to deep ambition, no her parents wanted to eat her.

Here is where I have the biggest problems with how they did this show. 1. They promoted it, as you said, as HE-MAN and the Masters of the Universe. If they wanted the show to be about Teela, they should have promoted it that way. 2. I have always thought Teela's story was a fascinating idea that I wanted more story. This show, however, only read the cliff notes to the Filmation show. 3. Teela is the biological daughter of Duncan and the Sorceress. I think this diminishes her story and removes a great story telling arc. Who was Teela's biological father? How did he die? How did Teela-na (the Sorceress) meet Teela's father, considering she would have already been the Sorceress? 4. Even though they didn't say it outright it was very clear she was meant to have a relationship with Andra, thus making her at best bisexual. I have no issue with this except it was made very clear in the original series that Teela and He-Man had romantic chemistry. I get it, it was the 80s but they made it clear there was an attraction there. They could have gone a little longer showing that Teela and He-man had developed a full on romantic relationship and that when he died, revealing himself as Adam, that betrayal of her trust would make even more sense.

There is so much content to watch too so it will sustain you for a while with 15 seasons and still more to come! Revelation...just gave me the push to watch the Filmation's series. I never watched the whole series as a child but now I am. I have younger friends that are in outcry of this "sequel" as well so its not just the older fans. They made not of watched He-man, but they knew of him. He's the strongest man in the Universe. It isn't that hard to figure him out. I just want to know who this series was marketed for. I can't see OG, Filmation or 2002 fans interested in this. I can't see new MOTU fans into it either. So I'm lost on who they are aiming for. I will say for the first time in my life I bought a He-man figure though. I grew up on Filmation's cartoon but never got or cared for the toys but now...as I'm watching the series I went out and got one. He-man is just chilling on my desk and I feel...happy. Revelation can do whatever it wants. I'll stick to what I love. Sure I *might* buy He-man or Prince Adam (I liked his design. I know it was just a standard "pretty boy" look but I thought it was good. Only thing good out of the show imo) but that's it. No one else was that interesting to me. If this series wanted to go full woman-mode why not do a twist and have his mother step up and save the day? I doubt He-man/Adam would sit by on that (it might make Skeletor go "uhoh.." ) but it would be a great way for both mother and son to bond (she already knew so...) I'll keep my hopes that part2 will give us a twist and bring Adam/He-man back but I doubt it. This was a good review. Thank you for taking the time to post it.

Honestly,I can't say that I blame Teela who's not in the mood for forgiveness, given that Adam waited so long to tell her his secret. As much as I would hate to admit it,as much it would butt-hurt the fans,Teela is neither ready nor willing to be vulnerable right now, given that she clearly lost both her best friend and the love of her life, and then finding out that they were both one and the same,is just too much for anyone to handle, let alone Teela. Both Adam and He-Man were the only ones that Teela could allow herself to be vulnerable around,to not be the captain of the Royal Guard and Prince Adam's bodyguard and just....be. With He-Man,Teela could be vulnerable around him, without being weak. With Adam, she could let down her guard in a different way,let her hair down,(metaphorically speaking,of course)cut loose and have a little fun. In both of them,Teela has a willing and reliable partner who has always been there for her whenever she needed them the most, and in areas where Adam sorely lacked,He-Man was there to pick up the slack. They were always there for Teela, whenever she needed an extra sword arm,or a shoulder to cry on or to commiserate on Skeletor's latest scheme to conquer Eternia. Come to think of it,Teela wasn't exactly given to having emotional breakdowns on the old Masters of the Universe shows or movies, either. The fact that her closest friends and family were in on Adam's secret, while she was kept out of the loop has done nothing to bolster her sense of trust and faith. In particular, her father not only being in on the secret, but encouraging Adam to lie to her,cut her to the very core. Teela is hardly the first human(or Eternian)to act like a jerk when confronted with a terrible loss of,and the revelation(no pun intended)of a great secret about,a loved one. And frankly,we need to cut her some slack and give her the space to grieve in her own way🤔 As the casualties mount and the bodies pile up,the weight on Teela's shoulders will become greater and greater and despite how massive those shoulders become, she will realize that she can't bear the burden alone. Assuming that the show’s not canceled, the weight of this challenge will undoubtedly come crashing down on her in one devastatingly implosion and maybe, just maybe, she could even learn to forgive herself. In any event, again assuming that Revelations continues, further viewing is warranted before any final conclusions can be passed down.

Her character really grew in the comics across those 10 years, especially in the first three. I loved He-Man growing up but He-man is nothing more than a screw driver or a hammer. He just fixes a problem when needed. There isn’t any real context to him. He’s just put back into a drawer when trouble is dealt with. In this series, we’re without that tool that can fix a major problem. So how do the rest of the characters handle it? Seems like an interesting concept to me.

@@TOAOM123 Teela was basically treated like a dog in the original. You threw her a Frisbee so she’d look the other way just so Adam could turn into He-Man. They made her a moron for years. Now we fast forward to today and fans don’t want the series to evolve. They want something generic. How many times can you throw a frisbee into the woods. The truth is, the original show in the early 80’s never really worked with anyone over the age of 10. The outrage is not justified.

@@joeydrakeward4077 Tldr: I dont think youre correct in what people's issues are but a 2.1 audience score is excessive (id give the show a 5) Youre not wrong However she also wasnt the protagonist I completely disagree with your assesment that "fans dont want the series to evolve" In fact: the number one thing 99% of all fans say about a he-man adaptation (or any other nostalgia property for that matter) is how they want these franchises to go more "adult" or "mature" to see how they can progress The overwhelming majority of actual complaints are the biproduct of the marketing and Kevin smith's reaction- both initially before it came out as well as his reaction to the reaction Im not saying the fan reaction is justified in regards to how people are expressing their frustrations (twitter mobs, etc) However: i think the vilification of the show is perfectly justified For one: while the story beats aren't "bad" the script itself is horrible And while still images of the art are fine- nothing spectacular- this is another series where the actual animation is choppy and stiff Its the same problem a number of netflix shows have I also hate this new trend where companies are claiming that two halves of a story that are released in different seasons of the year dont count as two seasons but rather two halves of one season These are all things that I feel justify a poor rating Does it deserve an audience score of 2.1 on metacritic? Id say no But it definitely doesnt deserve a critic score of 7.2 Personally id give it a 5

Agreed 100% He-man himself was always my least favourite part of the show. I always loved the variety of different supporting characters and always wanted to learn more about them. He-Man was usually like superman, coming in and being an unstoppable power, I always wanted there to be some challenge, for characters to have to band together to face a challenge bigger than they could handle individually.

Rather unlikable. HA! She is one of, if not THE most self centered and unlikable protagonists I have ever seen.
