Out-of-Placers is a Strange Gem in the Rough

A Short review of a webcomic that I've been following for some time.
If nothing else it's an interesting read, and it has a lot of thought behind it.

Eyyy, ValSalia here! Love this video; all the info is solid and makes good use of the panels to illustrate the points you're making, and all the ups and downs you mention are ones I totally agree with. It's clear that you didn't just skim the pages for some quick info too, as you definitely picked up on the themes and finer points going on! It's really interesting to get such a detailed analysis of this thing I work on pretty much every day. Thanks a lot for deciding to make this video, and putting in the work to make it good! I'll be sharing this around as a good summary of what to expect outta the comic if someone asks. >: D

Glad that You like it. I've been following the comic for some time, but in truth I did skim through it when re-reading it for the review. Looking forward to where things go in your comic.

Hi Valsalia, I don't know if you'll see this; Just wanted to saw that I really appreciate out-of-placers. I didn't know anything could be *as good* as this is until I read it. Incredible worldbuilding, very good art for yinglets and scenery, and what I like most is the exploration of the consequences of anything that happens, as well as the very realistic reactions of the characters. If you couldn't tell, I have a passion for hard science fiction. Truly breathtaking.

Underwhelming description after underwhelming description for the patriarchs, then you get to the Physical Manifestation of competence that is Beizel.

Just thought I'd mention three good spinoff comics based on ValSalia's work. Chasing Bolide and Drift by shard_of_confusion as well as Learn to Live by umbrascythe That is all, enjoy.

this video would probably have been good if instead of stiltedly explaining pretty much all of the base level lore, characters, back story and scenario, you covered the actual construction of it; the writing, the art, the themes, the history around it, the way it's paced and what kind of reading experience that it lends itself towards and how what it does is contextually interesting when compared to the massive backdrop of literature that comes out of the transformation fetish scene. y'know, the stuff that actually makes it worth engaging with if you aren't already familiar with the work. like... lore can be good and can keep you engaged with a work, but it is very much something that only matters to you after you are already into a particular series. I didn't get into this myself because I knew half of what already happens in it, the lore dump at the start of the comic nearly turned me off of it actually, I got into it cause it demonstrated very early on that it had an interest in exploring fleshed out gender themes and got me very interested in where it was going to go with that

Fair Criticism. I'm something of a worldbuilding junkie. Broader themes went by the wayside at the time. As an artist first and a writer second, I can break down character design and how that matters to the context of the character far better than examining the whole of the work's writing structure and how it reads/is paced. Probably should have gone with the standard Design Dungeon format, but oh well.

I would say the tech level is more early Renaissance. Val Salia is pretty much an Italian city-state in the likes of Genoa or Venice, a cosmopolitan city thriving on trade with its neighbors while neighboring empires eat each other. Books are readily available so someone out there invented the printing press. Literacy is on the rise even among yinglets. The only things lacking are early firearms and seeing caravels in dock. Fantasy realms these days usually have all the trappings of a Renaissance level society minus firearms. To find fantasy settings that are truly medieval you have to go back to Advanced Dungeons and Dragons or Mercedes Lackey or Tolkien. The thing with yinglets is, they are pretty well grounded in biology. They are monotremes with characteristics similar to some wading birds and with a similar diet. They use that tooth to open oyster shells, clams, and to deliver a nasty bite as we see Lopin do. I would actually hate to be bitten by a yinglet.

A interesting thing is the people of valsalia know about bacteria even if they cannot feasibly observe the microscopic universe. Its part of the whole "is this a sci fi and not a fantasy" thing the story has going on.

I’m like 90% sure that mammals are not native to that world. It seems like the ENTIRE rest of the ecology is invertebrate, and then you just have dogs, Yinglets, and Humans out of left field (and whatever Isher is. I suspect she actually might be a derived Human.) Add in the stun baton and hologram projector from the Artifacts brief, and the Val Salia planet could very well have started out as a failed colony that managed to crawl back from the brink. (Complete supposition, but I suspect that the Baxxid’s original environment may have been irreparably damaged by a terraforming effort, and it just took a few hundred years to completely collapse around them.)

All I can think of now is being some random yinglet and then hearing “Oi! Commissar! Do ya see this rat-birb! Ya think it could couch a krak grenade at something? Next thing you know yinglets are hired by the Imperium of Man as scouts and mechanics (for where the tech priest can’t reach). Now I want to see a yinglet tech priest.
