    My search for THE klone ended with the following two contenders: Ceriatone vs. RYRA. I built the Centura from a kit. But at the end I liked the RYRA more, which I couldn’t believe. So I started to buy diodes, which lead me into a rabbit hole inside a rabbit hole. I found diodes I love. They’re just not in the pedal you’d expect. I ended up modding the RYRA with the diodes I like and sold the Centura. Didnt expect that to happen. But then I decided to come out of the rabbit hole and play guitar. 😂

    I have the TC Electronic Zeus and I really like it. Pretty cool that you can get a good bit of the low end definition back with the FAT switch, unlike most of the other low cost Klones. Having the choice of thinner or fatter is what sold me on it.

    I love the formfactor of the Zeus. I hope we get more pedals this size with top mounted jacks. I never liked how clunky the mini pedals with the side jacks are and how you needed more space on the pedalboard for the jacks than for the pedals.

    Great video Guillaume! If one wants as close to a Klon as possible in the pedals here, the first 3 would be it IMO. I myself chose the Tumnus Deluxe and I love it! I push my Revv G2 pedal with it and it sounds amazing and I can give it back a little bass. As an OD, with gain at 3 o'clock and the hot switch on, it's barky cuts through a mix like crazy. Best klone for me! Thanks!

    I've actually owned Tone City Bad Horse for a while and I quite liked it. They have few really good pedals (Wild Fro and Durple are great drives). However I also had an opportunity to compare it to The Great Missing in this comparison - Joyo Tauren and while very similar soundwise, they differed in feel - Joyo felt a bit more "organic" and less "stiff". At this pricepoint both are really good options to scratch the Klon itch IMO ;)

    Seems to me that there may be a minor difference between one and the other, but it really doesn't matter much. In the end, if you are using this as a part of your individual sound, any of them can be workable and create a good tone. One tone vs. the other won't make enough difference to move the stars. In the end, you are the one playing, not the pedal. I use a Sweet Honey Overdrive, not listed in this shootout. It isn't a Klon clone. I like it better than all of these pedals. It has an adjustable dynamics that effects the amount of gain applied depending on what part of the sound-range you are playing in. Play higher registers, more gain. Play lower registers, less gain. It's all adjustable for how you like it. A feature I like quite a lot. Plus, if I stack it with another drive, OMG! Folks, there are alternatives.

    The Klon clones all sound beautiful. I have a mini one called a "Golden Horse", as well as one that is literally identical to the real Klon down to the type of resistors, wiring, and even the casing color, size, and centaur emblem on it, and sounds vastly different than my mini klone clone. On any one setting, other pedals can come very close to a Klon. However, what the Klon can do is to sound better than everything else at many different settings. Its higher gain settings are inimitable, and it's clean, slightly crunchy boost has a character that nothing else matches. There are no bad or unusable sounds in a Klon. Yeah, it's ridiculously expensive, but so is a Lamborghini, a Ferrari, a Rolex, a Learjet, or a '62 Strat. You don't have to have them, but...wouldn't it be nice.

  • @Falconryder

    @Falconryder

    Klon's aren't expensive because their construction or design is better, they are expensive because production stopped and starved the market, and now they're collector's items. Just like a Superman #1 comic isn't any better of a story than the rest, it's just very rare, and so worth thousands of dollars to collectors. The few of these pedals I know sound awesome in all sorts of settings as well, and many go well beyond the original in what they can successfully do. I doubt 1 in 100 people who think the Klon is superior would be able to tell it apart from half these clones in a blindfolded test.

  • @Glicksman1

    @@Falconryder As it happens, the Klon Centaur is expensive because it is both rare and better than everything else at what it does. An imitation is just that. The original will always be more desirable, and accordingly, cost more.

  • @Falconryder

    8 ай бұрын

    @@Glicksman1 "better" to snobs that are emotionally attached to name brands, but again, no one will be able to tell the difference between these if they're set right, particularly in a mix, and there's videos of guitartists comparing these in "blind tests" that routinely guess wrong about which one is the actual Klon. Only desireable to snobs and collectors. Practical guitarists that are focused on sound would be happy with several of the clones. Klon is great, and if they weren't hyper-expensive unobtainium, I'd be happy to have one. But it's nothing short of stupidity to assert that they are somehow objectively better than some of these really good clones. Lots of automakers make "clones" of the internal combustion engine, that doesn't make them inferior to a Ford Model-T. For my taste the Tumnus actually sounds better than the original to me, and given the choice between the two, I'd take the Klon, then sell it for it's obscene market cost to some silly snob, and then buy a Tumnus for my own board.

    Hey Guillaume, there's a problem wit your comparison relating to the settings of each pedal. You've adjusted the dials based on their location, not their function. So on some pedals you've got gain at 11, output and treble at 1, on others you've switched it around. Have a close look back over the video...

  • @joesatchton212
    @joesatchton212 Жыл бұрын

    Guillaume: Is there a reason that you didn't use a looper pedal for this? For these kinds of "trying to hear the difference" only comparisons, where no player feel or responsiveness is factored in, why would you not use a looper pedal into each one of the contenders? A looper pedal would guarantee that whatever you play will be exactly the same into each pedal, and then you could dial each pedal as close to the "master" as you can. Then you'd really eliminate a major variable, no? Just curious why no looper pedal here....Cheers!

    Hey Joe, thanks for your comment! I completely agree with you and for a more scientific approach a looper makes a lot of sense. I just thought that those pedals were quite different from one another and that the feel of them sort of dictated the playing. I should however have clarified that in the video, I also wanted to see how they felt to play, and not only have a sound comparison. But we might do a round 2 of that video since a few of them were not in stock at the time, and then maybe something quicker with back to back samples of a loop :) Thanks again for watching!

The foot switch is not reliable and when switching between the buffer/true bypass one needs to wait a day, while turning it on and off all the time, before it finally starts working. Literally all of these are fine for sounding like a “Klon”, as are the other 100 versions out there. So here’s how you make a purchase decision. What you like about the Klon is it’s a hard clipper that blends your unclipped signal back in, with an EQ profile. To me the best “Klon”, since you are likely to use it near the beginning of your chain, would be one that allows you to control the blend AND the EQ. Of coarse I’m in the studio 100% of the time and some people want to just plug in and hammer away on the weekend or stage and don’t want fine tuned control. Just something to think about. Eather way forget the magic diodes.

    You missed the best clone of all: the Spanish handmade Decibelics Golden Horse. You should have done a little more research.

    Is this the comparison you would like to see? No. You would like to hear the same lick on one pedal after another back to back without talking in between each pedal. Make the demo you want to see. You have wasted thousands of hours of other people’s time

    You can put an end to being a victim of having your time horrifically wasted and instead invest your own time to present a comparison video that satisfies you and which might help others. Please notify us when you’ve finished your video.

    I don’t think you will be able to sound like a Klon playing like that! Pretend you’re in a cover band and play a song. Useless video
