Love your techniques for splitting up roving and reconfiguring it with other roving/fiber to create new colorways and sequences for your yarns. So inspiring, and as a textile artist myself, being continually inspired is the way we push ourselves into new territory, in order to create unique work. Awesome! Thanks!

I love orange and shades of orange, coral being one of my favorite colors! This is beautiful yarn Grace! And I love all of the pops of color in it! What a wonderful technique! I did not know you were expecting a bundle of joy! Congratulations! Ok, suggestions for spinning...... I do all of my spinning and plying using only hand spindles. Could you do some videos on some techniques for making art yarn using different types of hand spindles? I would love that!

thank you! I really was excited about how nicely the colours turned out too. :) Thank you for your well wishes for my bump! She's already eager to be on film, she doesn't ever want to stay put under my shirt haha. I'm gonna do some research into spindle spinning. I taught myself to spin years ago Blackfoot style, holding it and manually twisting. It's been so long since I did it though! New project to marinate in!

Another great episode! I'd love to see what you end up making with this yarn in a future episode. :) I know you said you get bored easily but I have a massive collection of 4oz braids. If it tickles your interest, I'm interested in seeing how different ways of spinning these ends up as a final yarn and finished object. In fact...I'm so curious I might order some braids in the same color just to experiment on my own! :D As always, thanks for taking the time to film this and sharing your knowledge. 😄

I have long wanted to try out spinning one kind of roving as many ways as possible. I did several different colourways in ROVING but I'd like to see the differences in a scientific way. Hmm... I'm thinking of ways to do this. It could be several episodes worth of fun....! giggle! I'm thinking about dividing the braids in half to keep myself entertained haha. Thanks for your loving about the baby! We tried hard for her - and now she keeps trying to pop out of my shirt in my videos, silly bean.

Awesome video! I love the theme of the series and am excited to continue watching your creativity bloom! I have an interest in spinning but haven't had a chance to try it yet; I have been enjoying watching others spin. How did you get into spinning? Where did you learn? (I've found all these great resources on spinning but am lost as to where I can actually go to learn.)

yay! Welcome to our community! It's a beautiful place full of really great people. I taught myself fully, using KZread videos actually which is why I'm so passionate about teaching now. Ashley Martineau or How to Spin Yarn was my very first exposure to spinning. I highly recommend checking out her videos. She's got the very best way of teaching new people that I've ever seen. lol I'm a fan girl for her teaching skills :p

thank you :) I am so excited!! I have really enjoyed watching your videos, and I cannot wait to get more into spinning. I will check out her videos! I am thinking that I will have to teach myself with videos too; I haven't been able to find a place close to me where I can take classes. I also bought some supplies to make my own drop spindle. would you recommend starting on a drop spindle? or should I dive right in? also, what type of roving would you recommend when you first start out? Sorry for all the questions!!

  • @GraceShalomHopkinsFiberArt

+Sara never be sorry for questions!! Hmm. If you hate a spindle and absolutely can't produce yarn on it, then try a wheel. Some teachers have this thing about not letting students touch a wheel until they can spin perfect spindle yarn. I say, figure out where your natural skills lie and nurture the daylights out of them :) Then, when you feel in a rut, try out the other methods and grow outwards. As for fiber, my absolute 100% favourite is a bfl. BFL is the holy grail of fiber in my eyes ;) Paradise Fibers is a good place to get undyed roving and etsy is great for dyed :)

Hey Grace!! sorry for the terribly late response, thank you for writing back to me :D congratulations on your beautiful little girl!! I have recently bought a turtlemade turkish spindle! it is so cool :) and I was able to buy some roving all at this small fiber arts fair that was sort of close to where I live. I am going to the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival next year, and I am saving up for my own wheel :D I cannot wait!! I've also picked up some library books on spinning and I have loved learning about the history of spinning and it has been really neat to go beyond just knitting and crocheting to wanting to make my own yarn. I have to pick up my spindle again and get back into practicing. I really enjoy your videos and your creativity, it is really inspiring :) I'll have to get my hands on some BFL!!

Psh, my reply was 2 months late. Giggle. Thank you!! Ohhh that's so exciting! I am extremely jealous about the fibre fairs. A secret? I've never actually lived close enough to attend a real fibre fest! Enjoy it on my behalf! Which kind of wheel are you thinking of? Awh man I would love to discuss the history of textiles with you. I am a huge super mega geek about it. It's actually the thing that got me into fiber, I wanted to go deeper and deeper and deeper beyond historical costuming and such. :)

I'm not an orange fan either. The only time I've ever liked it is when I was pregnant with my first bubba and *only* for the duration of the pregnancy! However, if you subscribe to the idea that colours have meanings (blue is calm, red is passionate, etc) then orange is supposed to be happy - and everyone could do with extra happy ;)

That's funny - maybe my girl likes orange like your bump did. I know orange oil is my new obsession, I didn't even know what oils were before I got pregnant but now I want to spray orange on everything haha. I love that you brought up the meanings of colour, thinking about fiber through that lens is incredible. Soooo many possibilities!
