Priceless.

I am 62 years young and I remember my mom teaching me how to cut up a whole chicken and make butter milk biscuits for my parents and 11 siblings. My daughter hates cooking but her 11 y/o son loves cooking in the kitchen with me. I love teaching him and he says he wants to be a chef. He makes his own pizza dough from scratch and many other items. He can prepare an entire dinner for his nana, papa and mom now.

I'm 57 years old, but I learned to cook from my mom. My mother said before me and my brother were born and she and my father first married...my father couldn't do anything for himself...not even iron a shirt. She promised herself if she ever had boys she was going to teach them how to cook and clean for themselves because it was no guarantee we were going to marry a woman who knew how to do these things. She had 2 boys. Me and my brother...and we both can cook, clean, and a little sewing as well. My brother's wife couldn't cook a thing when they got married. If my brother didn't know how to cook they would've starved to death, lol.

@@greghunt7724 Wow Greg, Your mom & I had the same thoughts when it comes to rearing our sons.I to have 2 sons, I made up my mind to teach them how to cook, wash, iron, sew etc. While others viewed these as ladies work, I called them survival skills, by the same token they did things which are considered activities for boys also, like playing football, little league baseball, fishing, etc. Lol my older son married a young lady that could not cook also, my younger son is still single, & he plan & cook most of the holiday dinners @ my house.

I love her. She took that flour and parted it. She said well since you're trying to save money

I know just how you feel, sweetie. My mama got up every morning to get my daddy off to work by 5:30 and had him a full breakfast when he came downstairs. Eggs, bacon or sausage, ham sop gravy, white gravy, hash browns, buttermilk biscuits, fresh pot of coffee. Then we got up at 6:00 to a full breakfast. She wouldn’t let us leave the house without breakfast. This started for me from 1961 until 1974 when I graduated high school! Every day! Precious memories

Hazel, self rising flour already has salt in it. Baking soda too. So all this recipe needed was the baking powder 😉.

I haven't seen anybody make biscuits like my mother used to make. Hers were made in a cast iron skillet, and they had a brown crust (which was really the only part I wanted as a kid in some sugar syrup 😋😄). Everyone loved them. She had to make them for my dad 3 times a day because he ate them with EVERY meal. After he passed, she stopped (can't blame her). I just wish I'd paid more attention to the ingredients she used, but I was only 5 when my dad died. She definitely used her hands though, but didn't roll the dough out. She took pieces in her hands and placed them in the skillet. She did use a glass as the cutter AND the roller for pie crusts and fried pies though!

She is absolutely beautiful. I'm not sure what I enjoyed more. The recipe or Ms. B. This was beautiful!

This is my 1st time watching. I thought the guest (whose name I didn't hear) was fun and her history of the hoe cake was great. I agree that many my age and younger didn't learn to cook and missed out out many great stories. I was totally disappointed in the host's (Dariusi) immature giggling as she was explaining the cake though. He appears old enough to respect the story and her time explaining. Just my observation.

GOD bless you both My grandmother was the same way everyday we had homemade buttermilk biscuits for breakfast with eggs, sausages Fat back,bacon,fried apples or we would just eat them with sop syrups homemade preserves, jellies, or we pop open a Mason jar of some canned veggies like snaps,tomatoes, Ohh my goodness!!! And for dinner fried corn,chicken,collards black eye peas Everyday we had dinner like Sunday dinners and the pies made from scratch as well as the rice corn abd bread puddings.. My GOODNESS! They grew and raised EVERYTHING including the animals Yes beautiful memories and the most delicious food.. after she would come back from the garden it would time to prepare dinner, If we ate again it was called supper. Both set of my grand parents were Indian how BLESSED I am I EVEN spent time with both of my great grandparents I learned so much..about nature herbs. RESPECT for self my cultures Blackfoot and Cherokee They use to roll their long thick hair with brown paper bags..I am so grateful FOR THOSE TIMES AND THIS CHANNEL. I WILL BE MAKING THESE TODAY!! I remember biscuits with eggs, bacon, streak-o-lean and sometimes fried squirrel and rabbit w/gravy for breakfast. YUMMY! And talking about the brown paper hair rollers. My granny also had those brown leather type rollers that you could roll your hair and bend. Man those are memories!!

I love that the 2 cups of shortening turned into 1 cup and you played it off well. Sweet lady and you are so respectful and kind.

I can relate, I have 2 sons that love to eat, both of them can cook but every now & then they ask me how to prepare some of the foods I use to make when they were kids. younger son love to cook, and he usually help plan & assist with the holiday meals, sometimes he would even pay for the entire meal, lately I noticed that I've been forgetting so, I'm recording & laminating a lot of my recipes, so once I'm gone they will have them on hand.

I agree the art of cooking has been lost over the years nowadays everything is quick fix or prefix I didn't know what McDonald's was when I was going up I'm 46 years old and I'm still cook everything from scratch and I do mean everything from gravies to cake mix to cornbread everything is from scratch I take the time to teach all of the kids in my family that are willing to learn and they cook for their family as I do for them and they were coming up home cooked food always tastes better because it is made with love but that's just my opinion thank you for sharing God bless take care xoxo!

Suzyqs, We are close to the same age come And I know it was not like today when there is a McDonald's and almost every town. I grew up in what I'm pretty sure he's still Westchester's Largest city in New York.And we had to drive about half an hour to get To our local McDonald's when I was a teenager.1 of my best friends was working there, so I was able to talk my aunt into driving me up as a treat. My parents were not fans LOL So they may have been around then but they weren't all that easy to get to as they are now

When is very lovely, unknown woman, started talking about what it was like growing up and the recipes that are lost all I kept thinking of was PLEASE Show us them, teach us them. new generation, Let me give you a tip that worked for me?I spent well over 20 years trying to find an amazing recipe that my neighbors from Italy, who sadly have gone back to that country and I lost touch with them, used to make.I joined a hardcore Italian cooking group on facebook.I must have had 30 variations of that recipe with in 24 hours!So I don't know what would classify This recipe be it a particular ethnic culture, or location, or perhaps the years it was from, but I'd find that type of cooking group on facebook and join. Maybe even something like recipes out grandparents used to make.But I bet you you'll find your recipe that way! I only wish I had thought of it sooner! Good luck

Inevitably, the abused animals develop a virus that jumps from them to the humans who are abusing them, and then that virus mutates so that it can be passed among humans. TB, smallpox, anthrax, Ebola, etc, etc, are all caused by this same process.

Nowadays people think they're cooking when they take a prepared dinner out of the freezer & put it in the microwave. They're missing out on so many things - memories of cooking with mom & grandma in the kitchen. And they're missing out on flavor & the way it makes a house smell when something delicious is baking in the oven. Hopefully all of the cooking videos are inspiring people to learn to cook from scratch again.

For real! This made me laugh & cry. This is my Ma Dear. My grandmother would always say God always has a ram in the bush. Look how God works. He has just gifted me with a new grandmother. My grandmother passed away January 2019 at the age of 93 years young. I appreciate seeing you still spending that time with her because I treasured every moment with my MaDear. This video just brought me back soooo many memories, especially when she gave you that look. Darius, I fully enjoyed you and Miss Bert's lesson on the lost art of biscuit making. It took me WAY back to when I realized I needed some REAL food after I had moved to the big city from the South. You both reminded me of the time I spent with my momma learning how to cook REAL cornbread. I miss those lessons and the fellowship we shared. One thing I know is that real cooking ain't a lost art. I can't wait to try Miss Bert's recipe!

Reminds me of my Grandma making biscuits on the weekends for breakfast. I kind of remember her using an opened paper bag on the table with flour sprinkled on top & then she rolled out her dough & cut them & placed them on a pan & baked them. This is going to have me making some biscuits like my Grandma made. I also remember that can of Crisco. Thanks for sharing this.

Crisco was the only shortening back then. Oh, and I also remember that old tin can under the cabinet which would hold that 20lb bag of flour. The wooden bowl that the biscuits were made in. WOW!!!!

Thank you very much for sharing this video and recipe! This reminds me of my childhood when my granny would cook homemade biscuits, and many other great foods, from scratch. Nothing today, in our processed world, can beat the quality, taste, and techniques that went into those homemade meals. I hate that many don't see the value in these activities any longer. This should have been one of the life lessons passed on. Thank you again!

Yes you should teach your daughter! I've been wanting to create a recipe book to pass onto my children. I've been writing down some of my recipes... and if they're in the kitchen with me often, it'll be easier to execute those recipes when they read them later!

my grandmother was from union town alabama and she dipped her biscuits in melted butter before baking yum yum 😄😄😄😄😄 and then she used alaga syrup to dip them in she called them syrups

Courtney Sandy my grandparents liked to dip their biscuits in that syrup too. I didn't like it. I prefer preserves or honey.

Courtney my mother's family is from Greenville Alabama and this is exactly how my grandmother would make her biscuits as well.. I didn't like that Alaga's syrup..just preserves for me.

OMG! I'm shedding tears of joy. This brought back memories of me making biscuits with my grandmother and her daughters {my mom and my aunt}.
