Being a mermaid is about so much more than just swimming in a mermaid tail, it is a way of life. It is a journey of discovering who you are and who your are meant to be and of sharing a passion for the water with others and forging friendships that will last a life time. It is about believing in yourself through the thick and thin and encouraging others to do the same.
Being a mermaid is about keeping that little spark alive, that little spark that reminds us that anything is possible with a monofin, some fabric and dream.

Fair enough, the Luna is comfier but the Mahina is just so beautifulllll and Nyoom! I'm very blessed in that it doesn't give me pain though. Its important to choose a fin thats right for you so I'm glad you shared your experience for a variety of opinions for the community!

I just got a Mahina two weeks ago and I love it. But of course I don’t have another monofin to compare it to. The other fins I have are bi fins. But one thing tho that came up with research was that you need a stiff foot pocket so the transfer of energy from your feet to the fin isn’t lost. I read a lot of reviews about the Mahina being uncomfortable for some Merfins. I think it has something to do with the shape of your feet. I wear size 6-7, medium width and adult small is loose on me. I have to wear a 3mm neoprene socks to make it snug. I almost bought the adult medium from all the suggestions I found to size up. Good thing I found one review that helped me choose adult small. Now I am on a search for a bag that would fit the Mahina for travel. I want to bring it to Cozumel. Thinking of Costa Rica too but I doubt it would work with surfing waves 🏖

I'm so glad you did this review! As someone who owns both monofins and has swam in both numerous times (and also reviewed it on my own channel), I can say that I agree with every point made here. I have size 9.5 Wide feet, and the thing I hate the most about the mahina isn't even the nubs in the heels, its the top of the foot pockets that cuts my circulation off! I think in order for me to comfortably swim in it, I would have to cut out extra space on the top, and that might compromise the whole thing. But the Luna is my love, and I can honestly sit in it all day! I am prone to cramps as well, and it doesn't happen in the Luna! Also the straps just make it easier to adjust to my feet! It's way easier to put on, especially on land, and it swims so naturally! That being said, I'm glad I got to try them both out, and while the merfin has more propulsion, it's almost too much and too big to make it comfortable. Thanks so much for the review, Courtney! SEA ya later!

Amen! And I had no idea you had the Mahina too and it hurt you the same way! So many other mers I know suggest socks and I'm like "um.. you do know that'd make the problem /worse/, right??" *lol* I can't wait to see her review of the FantaSea fin, 'cause I've been debating between that and the Luna. I loooove everything I've seen about the Luna n' liked it the one time I tried one on, but I love the width & size of the Fantasea (from what I've seen of it on its web page), so I'm stoked about getting Courtney's input on it, so I know which one to finally invest in. ^_^

I have to add a few experiences with the Mahina: when I first tried it, at a local lake, it went on fine over my neoprene socks, and I watched underwater weeds whipping by at a great rate. When I took it to the pool, I had various trouble getting my huge wide feet into the largest size they make... socks of any sort stuck and pulled on my toes. Yesterday, went to a beach on the Chesapeake Bay with friends. The wind was coming ashore off the bay with a few miles of fetch, nice big rolly waves but not quite like an ocean beach. Took the Mahina for a spin... A. zero trouble getting it on (was it the baby powder, that should have washed off???). B. Fabulous fit. C. Fabulous power; I could easily swim around in the waves, get up to "surfing speed" (like I do in the kayak) and surf in. Disclaimer here: I got an advanced open water scuba certification and have been swimming with fins and a dolphin kick for years. I had used the Mahina in calmer water before and knew how it worked. I also knew the beach I was on very well (a sandy, gently sloping bay beach, but with rocky breakwaters). This fin does have enough power to deal with conditions more challenging then a pool... BUT you need to know your water, your skills, and your limitations. And I still wouldn't play in harsher ocean surf.

Finally swam in the Mahina I got. Not in the same environment as the other fins (lap pool), rather in a lake. Visibility was to about arm's length, but swimming over the bottom, where I could see sand and the odd weed zipping by, I felt the Mahina is quite fast, faster than any other monofins I have (Luna, Fin Fun). Easy on, easy off (I could just pull a foot out with a wee wiggle, but there was no slipping as I swam). I have the large size Mahina, have tenish or elevenish feet with lumpy base joint to big toe. The Mahina foot pockets work well. Seemed a hair snug, but I'm using light neoprene socks (2 mil?). No rubbing with the socks. No cramping. Your experience will vary according to your specific physical needs and quirks. One's feet are close together in the Mahina while being farther apart in the Luna. I didn't have a problem with this, but some might find that less comfortable. The fin is a little more resistant to the mermaid rolling and spinning (not as agile as the smaller fins in a few moves)(or maybe that's just practice) because it's so BIG. It's also fast because, so BIG. I pretty much adore it. Still keeping my Luna tho...

I love my Mahina because I find it to be the easiest to swim in once you get used to the size. But everyone is different. I have considered giving the Luna a try, but sadly I feel like without a bit more propulsion I might get weighed down a bit which might make me panic. I like that with the merfin I can kick once and I'm at the surface.

I really can't say anything about how this fin works while swimming, but honestly, it already looks kinda uncomfortable. But then again, I kinda see that with all monofins that have straps. My left leg is actually 1cm shorter than my right leg, so every since I was a baby, I had feet, leg, hip and spine problems, I even have a slight scoliosis now, so I guess comfort would be the most important thing for me. To be honest, not really a fan of the shape or the colors either. I mean that cyan/turquoise kind of color is pretty, but the golden paint splashes just look like it got dirty or the color has rubbed off 🤷🏻‍♀️

Thank you for posting this! I've been wanting to get a monofin for a while now and I've narrowed my choices down to the Finis Luna and the Mahina Merfin, and your review has been so helpful. I also have chronic knee & back pain/fatigue problems so your insight really helps!

I love your reviews, and they're really in line with what I look for in a monofin. I currently have a silicone monofin, because I just do mermaiding for fun, and I don't want uncomfortable feet when I'm going for a relaxing swim as a mermaid. I'd like to get a fast fin at some point just to try it, but I think I'll be going with the Mermaid Linden adult monofin, because that one sounds a lot more comfortable, and honestly I find the shape of that monofin to be much prettier than the mahina.

I have a Mahina fin, and I too have noticed that this fin does rub and cause blisters. I have to use swim socks with it. And I also cramp like crazy in it. But still absolutely love it. The perpusion is great and it looks beautiful. I have had to custom make my own tail skins for it just because most pre-mades have to stretch so far to cover the fluke. But I noticed that I cramp less if I just use my leggings instead. Thanks for your review. Love your vids. Keep on making a splash.

I got the mahina, in large part because of how much Nerdmaid loves hers. I've noticed that it's hard to get on as well, and hard on the feet, but as I am getting used to it, I'm quite liking the control. I suspect I'll move on to a mertailor eventually, but this is my upgrade from Finfun and it's quite the improvement there. I think the idea of the nubs in the heel strap is to try and spread the pressure over as much area behind the ankle tendon as possible. It grips into the area quite well. I also picked up a pair of 1.5mm neoprene socks (I'm a 9.5 foot and got the size below yours) and it helped A LOT. Thanks for the review!

Cool video! I got a Mahina... I also have a Luna. (Looking for something with a little more power... ha ha ha)... I bet you got more power out of the Luna because you are verrrrrrrrrrrry tallllllllll ! Us short round women need a bit more butt kicking in the tailfin area. The bumpies are there to fit around your achilles tendon and keep the strappy from flappy... neoprene sox are your friend. I like the way it sits on my feet (I also have ridiculously huge feet, and arthritic big toe joint, so I got the ginormous size). But I use neoprene sox on both Luna and Mahina. It was easy on and easy off for me. I also like the softness and flexibility of the foot pockets, easier on the bumpy toe joints. Several people I've met do love the Luna, and one young mer felt the Luna was "lighter" than even the Fin Fun... aka, it flowed better and had less resistance.

Great video! I also recently purchased a mahina. I was looking for a more professional fin because I wanted to upgrade from a fin fun. I was drawn to it because of its large size and I like the shape. After swimming in it my feet were super sore and I had lots of blisters (and I was wearing socks). I also found my feet were slipping and it was too big. Other than that it makes me go pretty fast in the water.

Good review! I have the Fin Fun monofins and got a Luna (heh heh based on your review)... which is gorgeous but no more propulsion, I think, than the Fin Funs. It is more durable, and easier on/off. My only issue is the foot pockets need to be boxier: it rubs on my bumpy big toe joint ( I have "Hallux rigidus is a form of degenerative arthritis, which can cause pain and stiffness in the metatarsophalangeal joint"). I am considering the Mahina (a cousin has one, but too far away for me to try it) and the Linden as future fast fins. The Linden looks boxier and roomier in the foot pockets, as well as adjustable. It also fits in Fin Fun skins... though of course, we'd like to have a Vancouver Mermaid skin... Anything larger than my feet (a generous size ten) is great, then I can wear neoprene dive socks, pad my feet, and fill in the space.

I suspect the deep spaces on the bottomside of the fins are to accommodate the foot pocket shape... those can't be flat, the top of the fin has to be streamlined, so the bottom has weird channels and spaces... if they made the bottom streamlined too, there would be extra material to fill in the space between a boxy foot pocket and the edge of the fin... and that would be heavier. Smaller recreational kayaks without skegs or rudders often have a sort of inverted keel, or set of channels on the bottomside of the hull to make the boat track straighter. Perhaps the spaces on the underside of the fins is similar.

I used to have the mahina merfin for years. It lasted about 6 years of full use. I must say that it was probably the best monofin I could have ever purchased. I washed it everytime I used it in a pool or at the sea with fresh water, keep it in places with shade, always facing the wall so as not to bend etc. But all things have an expiration date. The "shoe" like parts started to rip. I tried to fix it but the meterial that it was made of (I think a specific plastic) did not support hot glue (silicone gun) and it just got off the minute I placed the glue. I was kinda sad to realise that it was its time to go. It was the best birthday gift I've ever had. If you are thinking of purchasing this monofin I can highly recommend it.

the Mahina is the fastest and most powerful fin I've tested so far (timed tests vs Rapid, Competitor etc), it's an incredible fin, but also the most uncomfortable. No matter what kind of socks I wear (or even no socks- good luck with that), it kills my feet after a few minutes, and it's also very heavy, so doing tricks isn't very nice on your ankles. I'd like to try out the Luna, it's just really expensive here.

  • @Ylluria

I have really high insteps, so the Mahina is incredibly painful to wear- esp. over a long period of time, as well as get in and out of. So to help make wearing it a little less of a torture, I use water-based lubricant before I put mine on. You can get it very inexpensively at Walmart for I think just under $2, and it dissolves in the water, so it doesn't leave your feet feeling too slippery or sticky while you swim. :) (Though you do need to reapply each time you put the fin back on.) Either way, the Mahina still leaves the tops of my feet literally indented and in pain for several days after each use. But because of its width and propulsion, I'm willing to put up with the pain that it puts me in, you know? Anyway, I hope that helps!

Would you recommend the Luna tail for swimming in the ocean

I would recommend a different monofin, something with a stiffer blade. Finis has a options for that too.

I just got my mahina monofin yesterday. I'm 13 years old, and I have a small problem. I'm pretty out of shape, I'm the proper weight and everything, but I haven't been very active. I have fin socks so I don't get blisters and everything fits properly, but when I swim in it, it hurts my ankles and I don't know why. I don't kick with my knees I only use my abdominal muscles to swim in it. I wondering what might be causing this.

Unfortunately I can't really give medical advice but if you are concerned you could talk to your doctor about it. The Mahina hurts my ankles a lot too though to be honest.

The shape and size of the monofin really worked for you astectically. However, you didn't seem as smooth or as comfertable in it.

I really want to buy a monofin. I live in Europe and the shipping will cost a lot. So I really want to make sure I get the “right” one. Would you recommend the finis Luna or Mahina? Or is there a better alternative for beginners? I want something fun and comfortable :)

I'm not sure if you can or should remove them because it might compromise the integrity of the monofin. Can you try socks maybe?

I heard of people using a dremel sanding tool to get the bumps away.

I'm "SO negative" because it hurts me. Don't think I can be positive about something that causes me pain. ;) I can keep up just fine with other mers in my Luna.

You should create your own monofins haha! That way you can have the best of both worlds 😂 It’d be so cool to get a Monofin from you!!!
