Mermaid Etiquette

Ойын-сауық

In today's video I want to talk about some important things to remember in regards to mermaid etiquette. Remember that I am saying these things out of love and out of a hope that our community can improve. I love you all my little fishes and it breaks my heart when I hear some of your stories of being bullied. Let's share the love and kindness!
Thank you so much for watching my video, I hope you enjoyed it and happy swimming!

    1.) Protect your information. 2.) Do not claim another mermaid's work as your own. 3.) Be patient with new or young mermaids. 4.) Don't spam your tail makers. 5.) Don't make assumptions (that people don't like you for some reason). 6.) Don't make private conversations public (esp. if all parties think it will stay private). 7.) Be aware that anything you post, ANYWHERE, can be made public. 8.) Be respectful of public pools and other public places (don't ruin it for others). 9.) Don't be that person (who spreads rumors/creates drama). 10.) Don't assume that you know everything (be open to new ideas and concepts). All in all, the takeaway message here is BE MATURE. It doesn't take a lot to be a nice person, respectful to others, and cordial in the face of conflict. Thanks for making a cohesive video talking about this! Hopefully you'll inspire mers to follow your message and it will really improve this community ^^

    You forgot to add knowing how to swim properly befor slapping a tail on. Reason being weak swimmers drowning or almost drowning and causing safety concerns which leads to bans. Thanks to that I don’t really have anywhere to swim in winter I wish people thought more carefully about things.

    Exactly. It's part of the reason that my mom is very hesitant to letting me buy my own mermaid tail, and since I can't find good places at the beach or whatever, I wouldn't be able to do anything. Even if I had a tail.

    Can I add one? If you did say this and I missed it, sowwy. MIND YOUR TAIL IN PUBLIC PLACES. Oh gosh especially now that companies are making fabric/neoprene large fluke tails. A lot of times we don't realize how much space our tails take up, mainly the fluke, while this mostly goes out to other mers with the bigger flukes this can still go out to finfun, and what not, tail wearers. These flukes are hard! Maybe they don't seem like it when they are flowing gracefully in the water but if you accidentally hit someone with your fluke while swimming or doing a tail flip or whatever it is, it will hurt! At mermania (I'm not mad at them because there were hundreds of tails packed into one pool) I was swimming along and I got hit on the head by a passing fluke and it seriously hurt I had to take a moment to stop swimming, so I really must emphasis that if you are swimming with others, be it in a public pool the ocean your bathtub, keep aware of how big your fluke is, where everyone else is because that crud can hurt

  • @CourtneyMermaid

    @CourtneyMermaid

    6 жыл бұрын

    I did mention it and I have in other videos but this is definitely important so I'm happy that you put more emphasis on it! Mers often forget how much longer they are with a tail and it's super important to remember! Thank you for watching and commenting!

    So I'm new to mermaiding and I've had people tell me that I'm too big to be a mermaid, I didn't get upset I would just say mermaids are cold water creatures so they would need that fat on them to stay warm and not potentially die. Then I would smile and keep swimming.

    Omg I am so stealing that line of thought. Also have you seen the photos and videos of the young plus size ballet dancer? Those were so inspiring. I am kind of afraid of the body shaming aspect, I haven't really been exactly a bikini model type up till now lol.

  • @damemelusine4879
    @damemelusine48796 жыл бұрын

    This was very well said Courtney! I would just add that it is important to be kind to young mers who struggle to access tails and mermaiding and express their frustration with rude comments eg :"What, do you think we are all rich!" . Countless times they were replied to with mean responses by adults or other children berating them "yes, sillicone tails cost 2000$+ stupid!" People need to realize that mermaiding is a privilege that is not accessible for everyone, and that responding to a child's immature comments with condescending comments is not ok.

  • @CourtneyMermaid

    That is absolutely what I meant when I said what I said in the video. Heck! My first tail was a DRESS! It was cut up and re-sewn together and had NO FLUKE! I looked ridiculous but I felt magical and I was so lucky to not have anyone give me a hard time about it. There are so many ways to enjoy and appreciate mermaiding without a mermaid tail too! I wholeheartedly agree though. We all need to be a bit more patient and kind towards the young and new mers! Thank you for watching!

    Can I add another one? ASK BEFORE TAKING PICTURES OR FILMING! Again, I'm coming from the Jfashion community and people take pictures of us all. the. time. The thing is, there can be minors in a group or peoplemay not want their picture taken for work or family reasons. I don't get how people just seem to abandon human decency once they see something unusual. The entitlement of people who sneak or demand photos is INSANE

    Thanks for all the tips. I avoid it all and just swim without publication of my mermaiding. I am a word of mouth mermaid. So I avoid most of what you said, but I get it most mermaids want more than that. I just don't. I just love mermaiding & everything else is fluff I just don't go for. Love you Courtney! Those are values and can and should be lived with everything! Lol mermaiding is the one of the few place where I do get that genuine kindness and connection. Its what drove me most to it I realize looking back as a itty bitty child human who just wanted to swim and swim as a mermaid forever, but only as a more experienced human I am now can I say that's apart of what drew me in and keeps doing so. So YES I totally agree with it all! By the way spread that to all areas of life while your at it I advice to people's!!!

    regarding poimt 3. I go by the philosophy of "I'd rather ask one question too many than too few." I do that with lolita fashion too. If I have a question about washing a piece, I ask the appropriate group. If I have a question about styling tips, I ask the appropriate group. I'd rather ask than having to figure it out completely on my own and possibly messing up. Not that messing up is bad, but I'm talking dangerous levels of messing up. I'm talking buying from sketchy sellers, endangering yourself etc.

    Mermaiding isn't the only drama magnet. I was in synchro for a while, and it was all kinda dramatic, as well as in ballet. Petty girls who love gossip go for feminine things, and mermaids have always been a very feminine and sensual kind of symbol. Sure, not all individual mermaids are those kinds of symbols, but the collective idea of fish women has been for the majority of their exsistance, so why would drama queens *not* be drawn to the mermaid community?

    #9 - I never cared about rumors in high school, so caring about it as an adult is just futile and childish. I'm guilty of the same thing you said you're guilty of (sharing screencaps). Sometimes it isn't outright obvious that something is private. How would you suggest to make that clear, especially in a chat that has a lot of people in it? Love these tips. Very spot-on and told from a great point of view. Thank you for sharing. xx

    I'm so glad you found it helpful! I could probably make a follow up video on that point specifically. It's something we've all done on different scales at one point or another. This is where living in a digital age can make life so difficult you know? Information is everywhere and accessible by everyone so it's difficult to draw those boundaries. I think it's more about not engaging with people that are going to bring negativity into your world you know? I also like to go straight to the source if I can by talking to a mod or an admin. I know people have said nasty things about me behind my back before that have gotten back to me and made me feel awful. I wish people would honestly think about what they are about to say before hitting send... So much nonsense could be avoided that way. Anyway, I'm going to think on this more and maybe do a little follow up post on my blog or maybe another video. Thanks so much for watching and for the support!

    I've always said I never want to be "an expert". Experts labor nurse doing her job 40 years almost killed me and told my family I was just being a baby. Turned out I had a 9" abscess on my right side and was near death in fact after my doctor induced me and my daughter was born it burst inside me and then they knew I was sick. Her response "I couldnt have known" she kept checking me out telling the back up doctor he didnt need to come down for a week straight I went in insisting something was wrong and she would let me stay a bit then send me home telling my family not to bring me back until it was actually time because I was being a baby. The guy who brought a lot to the table about sharks got his calf bit off moments after telling the camera man "Dont worry they wont bite you." Just takes one shark with a bad day to not be acting like you expect. He did bring so much knowledge about sharks to light but doesnt change the fact that he could say something as stupid to anyone as dont worry it won't bite you. Tiger sharks if I remember correctly. I dont wish the biting of anyone but I'm glad it wasnt the camera man who was trusting his expertise. It seems once someone seems themselves an expert this block comes about where they stop taking in new information or the possibility that they dont know what's happening. The #1 rule in science class we were taught is nothing is 100% science is always changing and evolving with new information being learned. I want to know a lot about a lot of things I never want to decide I know all about it and shut out the possibility of not learning anything new. I'm going to send this to my kid tomorrow because I think you make great points and shes just getting her first mermaid tail for her 12th bday this year. Also most of what you said is simple etiquette in general. New people young people etc are going to ask questions about anything and everything not just this. Being a jerk is bad in general. Most of these points are just good point about life in general.

I'll try to only swim in beaches or friends pool where it isn't as full, as I think it's a little more respectful where I don't kick someone or cause a herd of curious kids. I always find it important that you have patience with kids especially if you're dressing as a mermaid because they'll crowd up to you if they are curious or just love mermaids in general

    I had something like that happen to me at school and uh... yeah that was not fun. Someone was talking crap about me behind my back telling everyone that I had said something I hadn't and dissing my social media existence. I found out through my friend who had had a class with this person.

    Omg it sounds like the crap hairdressers go through. Im a new mermaid and I'm a hairdresser (not new at that) and I'm sad to hear that there's drama here too uhhhh y me. Y can't I pick a drama free hobby lol I stick by the I don't care what others do I mind my own business and I expect others to do the same. If only then the world will be a nicer place for us all!

    This was a GREAT video!!! BUT... The advice you give in this video should extend to ALL artistic endevours & professional work, not just dealing with merfolk and the humans they interact with. (Ha! And, you thought that statement might be derogatory!) Simply put, no matter what you are, what you do, or where you go, don't be a jerk! You get what you give. "Karma" might take a while to get around to you. But, you don't EVER want to get on her/his bad side. Because if you do, you WON'T have a "good day" of what happens next! Keep up the great work! This is, (and should be), useful to everybody, not just for "aquatic friends" . 👍👍👍🦈

  • @CourtneyMermaid

    @CourtneyMermaid

    Though I have not personally tried one of their Betta mermaid tails, I have heard they are a bit heavier. I would recommend starting with something a little lighter without so much extra fabric. Less is more when you are first starting off.
