skyler114 WELL I MIGHT AS WELL PUT SPOILER TAGS TOO EVEN THOUGH EVERYONE HERE HAS PROBABLY SEEN IT. In their cases they physically died, they didn't become witches. In the case of "become the villain" the OC meant becoming a witch, so I excluded the deaths of Mami and Kyoko.

The Sea Of Thy Soul Well in any case, they did die cowering, crying, emotional trainwrecks. They just did it in a way that was awesome. Mami was close to being the opposite, but well, Episode 3. Die the cowering crying emotional trainwreck hero or live long enough to become the villain.

This is telling their story all broken down in each parts of the song. **Homura:** "One day The light of love Though it may seem far away Will shine again in your eyes (Transcend and rise above) But there's only one dream And it has ripped at the seam. This world will end in ruin (And I'll lose all I love)Swallow all your doubt Make your lust cry out I will help you swallow your hesitation You'll trust me Cause you yearn with greed Though your heart may bleed Will we fade away from this world with no hope to hold onto?" *_Homura keeps repeating timelines over and over. Each 'world' ended in ruin and she is forced to do it all over again in a failed attempt to keep a promise that she made Madoka. Every single time, Madoka's fate became worse and worse._* **Madoka:** "I remember you from a dream I thought was truth You bright with magic and I blinded by my youth All is wish is for your hand to hold, you see Only your smile kills the dark in me With these hands I try to hold what I cannot seize I'm like a rose thrown into a violent breeze All my strength blown away With my heart I will stay Praying for light Guiding my wish with all my might" *_Madoka first remembers Homura during a dream she had where she witnessed Homura fighting a wish and seeing magic brought to her world. When she truly first met Homura in the original timeline, she felt like Homura gave her hope that there was a way out of the magical girl lie._* **Sayaka:** "One day It will come true That wish you have inside you To save the one that you love (Is that a selfish act?) They will Latch to your heart That's when confusion will start You'll say words you've never heard (Just how would you react?) She felt sadden that he spent days in a hospital bed and was deprived of using his musical talents. Sayaka was so in love with him, she willingly gave up her wish to heal him. After her wish turned completely wrong "the rose" is her father and using her wish literally stopped his life and destroyed everything. So she has a tough outershell which became her sheath. Sadly she lives with regret, but refuses to give up living._* **Mami:** "The stories that I heard as a child Kept me dreaming Where magic runs free And imprisoned suns remain always gleaming The fairy tales I loved have taught me (have taught me) That no matter what hurdles there may be Your wish comes true (Was I a fool to trust in those lies?)" *_Mami is partly a mystery. Mostly she is a bit naive which abruptly ended her life. In different timelines it is shown that she became unraveled and the burden of a magical girl wasn't as what she thought it was. It was dark and bleak. She felt like a fool believing in lies that kyubey fed her._* **Homura, Madoka, Sayaka, Kyoko, Mami:** "In the night wild with fright The old magic stirs Blooming with grace It rises up to meet my face" *_This is when Kyubey first met with them individually_* **Kyubey:** "With your hands you can change this whole world of yours. Everything that you wish for is in your grasp" *_Kyubey offering up a contract that can 'change their world._* **Homura:** "All I want is to forever dream with you" **Madoka:** "To live a life where all of me is a live" **Sayaka:** "Deep inside I will give" **Kyoko:** "All my love just to live" **Mami:** "I won't regret" **Homura, Madoka, Sayaka, Kyoko, Mami:** "making this sinful wish of mine"

I guess it's tough when you have a tune and general song meaning laid out, then have to try to fit it all together. Here's something to show how well crafted the show was, when Mami is talking to the two girls in her apartment, at one point while she is speaking the camera view deliberately does not show her head, instead it is reflected in the table almost like she is holding it in her hands ;)

Is this in the movie or series? I've watched the scene in the series, and whilst her head is reflected, so is a portion of her upper body, and her hands aren't in the frame. Perhaps the movie added that detail?

***** I've seen both the movie and series several times, I was just pointing out that I've never seen that detail. I disagree, the movie version is a horrific butchering of the original, all for the sake of cinema. I mean, to edit out important parts like the previous timeline "dream sequence", Mami's backstory, on top of that they censored some parts, changed music, shortened fights, edited out dialogue and in the end made the movies a horrible cut-up mess.

My friend basically forced me to watch this, and at first I thought it was gonna be a weird, hentai-ish anime about "magical girls." BOY WAS I WRONG.

I love how these lyrics perfectly capture all of the pain and madness Homura went through trying to save Madoka. There are times where she's talking to Madoka, but also times where she seems to be talking to herself.

Kuroshi Kun It's hard not to cry after watching this show. It's such a tragic story that you can't help but feel bad for the girls, especially poor Homura. God did she get the shit end of the stick. When her full history and everything she had to go through was revealed, it was pretty messed up. That ended up being the most fucked up love story I've ever encountered in an anime. On another note: Another wasn't scary, more like it was dark as hell. Along the same lines is Corpse Party. By the end of either of those shows, you feel really bad. Hell, with Corpse Party it isn't "will anyone die" as much as it is "will anyone survive".

I'm gonna disagree with you on this one, it describes the mental state of Homura during the first season pretty well, it's about Homura struggling with finding the resolution to continue fighting a losing battle while beginning to doubt her reason for fighting. But the third movie is all about Homura having lost the will to fight due to not accepting the sacrifice of Madoka. Not at all what this song is about. Oh how I adore Homucifer

When the intro switches to this in the show you basically know you fell down the rabbit hole to hell, trying to climb back up but never being able to succeed.

Absolutely. It's my favorite anime of all time. It took the magical girl genre and turned it upside down, but that's not why I love it so much. In my opinion, it is extremely well written, the characters are likable and develop throughout the series, the animation and music are both stellar, and I was very satisfied with the way it ended (although the follow up movie, Rebellion, is a different story). Anyways, definitely worth the 4 or so hours it takes to watch the show from start to finish.

I like how each section of the song is broken up to describe each one of the girl's point of view or situation. For me I see Homura, then Madoka, followed by Sayaka, and then Kyoko and lastly Mami. The final part I can see them all singing together in unison. That also reminds me the part where "With your hands you can change this whole world of yours. Everything that you wish for is in your grasp" is obviously Kyubey offering up a contract.

I've watched this video AT LEAST 100 times, and yet I've never noticed until just now that there are 2 voices singing, simultaneously, for a lot of the song😅

I don't think a song has ever disturbed me this much or hit me this hard with such minimal context. I of course know about Puella Magi Madoka Magica (UGH, titles) from the Internet and Kalafina's amazing song, and I know it's basically a violent, terrifying, trippy deconstruction of the Magical Girl genre. (I'm still trying to force myself to watch past the pilot -- DAMMIT WHY'D THEY HAVE TO MAKE THE PROTAGONISTS SO ADORABLE? I KNOW WHAT HAPPENS TO YOU ALL!) But I was not expecting this cover to hit and disturb me as deeply as it did all by itself. Kudos to everyone involved! ...now I need to figure out how I'm ever going to get back to sleep again...

I have to admit, I found it to be very haunting from the first time I heard it. It has a very "the end is nigh" feel, and after a month after watching the anime I had to block it from my mind as a result. With this translation, along with the context, it seems so sad now....a beautiful sad, but sad all the same. (although I do notice paying more attention to the string instruments than the percussion makes it seem much less haunting =u=")

***** That's a bit dramatic, don't you think? Besides, none of those things will kill a Magical Girl in that universe, unless their Soul Gem shatters. Once that happens, they die instantly. Anything else, they can heal themselves from. Their bodies are just puppets; Puella Magi are their Soul Gems. So it's not EXACTLY like being a real soldier -- they can't be maimed or suffer the kind of slow, agonizing deaths real life soldiers risk.

***** Untrue. Case in point: Tokyo Mew Mew, Sailor Moon, Cardcaptor Sakura.... They all involve MGs, and they all are happy. PMMM is an outlier in the MG genre. Most MGs are cute and sweet, and while they face obstacles, they do in fact LIVE and have happy endings.

***** Interesting, I found Madoka to be a very uplifting work (in the end). And I've known magic girl anime can go very dark, back from original Sailor Moon (uncensored Japanese version, not the heavily censored American dub), which went pretty dark at times (they all die again at the end of the first season (the backstory has them reborn 1000 years after Usagi's teenage crush ended in genocide)). Sailor Moon almost ended up as the magic girl Evangelion, but the authors managed to restrain themselves. It did come close, though. However, in Madoka they really did troll the audience to the last minute. They even trolled before it started (Urobutcher's name got out, so he stated that he wanted to make something heartwarming for a change, which was technically true, in the end).

Having watched both Madoka and Sailor Moon in their entirety by now (along with Sailor Moon Crystal, Yuki Yuna Is A Hero, and Revolutionary Girl Utena, which isn't QUITE Magical Girl but pretty close), and being halfway through Mai-Otome, I can honestly say that "Magical Girl" is probably one of my favorite genres of anime. There are fluffy light slice-of-life series, like Cardcaptor Sakura (which is still gorgeous and everyone SHOULD watch it), but for the most part Magical Girl anime do not f--k around. Puella Magi Madoka Magica f--ks around even less than most. Despite that, the series does have a hopeful, uplifting, and touching ending...provided you stop at Episode 12. The Puella Magi Madoka Magica movie *Rebellion*, on the other hand, very much does not. And yet, I still love Rebellion. Mostly because it doesn't feel like an ending; rather, it feels like the second part of a trilogy, like there was always supposed to be something that was going to follow it. And that was before the 'Concept' promotional trailer was released. Even what happens to Homura in the movie makes perfect sense when you think about her character from the start. It's tragic, but it's also almost inevitable (thus making the name of her leitmotif, "Inevitabilis", a chillingly perfect fit). When you base your life around protecting one person, as she did, then that person becomes more important than the rest of the world. The ending of Rebellion is just a brutal look at what someone with that mindset is truly capable of.

I found this to be a very interesting anime. I loved how they turned a magical girl anime into a psychological thriller. Never thought a magical girl anime would be in my top 5 favorite anime. If every episode had been as incredible as the last few, I would claim this to be the best anime of all. Definately worth watching for the amazing story, characters, and emotion.

I can agree with this :P I am a big fan of the magical girl genre in general, but this anime had me hooked off the very first episode!

It still surprises me sometimes that there are people that haven't gone through the dark story that is PMMM. I mean it makes sense since there are people who are new to anime every year but I mean mostly the veterans who have been watching for a few years already.

Ah, I'm pretty sure AmaLee works with a Japanese native speaker as a translator, then edits the lyrics to flow better. No matter how much of it rhymes, you can't help but admire the fluidity despite it being an originally Japanese (?) song. So congratulations to Amanda Lee.

Please keep in mind that this cover is very old -- when I was still relatively new to adapting lyrics from a translation -- I didn't really understand it, only that I felt pressured to get all of the words in the song rather than to focus on making them flow. This is very different from how I work today as I've had much practice these past years. If I were to write these lyrics today they would have turned out much different~ I don't like how you say I didn't bother because I remember these lyrics being extremely aggravating -- to the point where I almost didn't finish this cover. I'm not sure if you've ever tried to adapt lyrics before but it is far from an easy task... And this song is certainly a little monster all on its own! haha I do agree that these lyrics have a lot that is so be desired, and looking back at them all of these years later there are many things I would like to change but at the time they were written they the best that I could create~ Whoo that turned into quite a reply! I hope you could enjoy this cover despite those roadbumps!

Hello! Well, because of copyright I cannot put a lot of older covers on Itunes/Loudr, but for my newer covers, where I've started to re-create the instrumentals, I'm able to get the licenses and permissions necessary to sell them on Itunes/Loudr. Sadly since this song uses the official instrumental, I can't put it up for purchase, but there's a free download link in the description~! :)

The lyric rewrite is just amazing, it fits the song and the series super well, you did a ridiculously good job on it

The Show Is Both Good And WTF At The Same Time....the first 2 episodes are happy and cute but then in episode 3 things get very dark...

I watched the first episode, i hated it because it was just "Yay, happy, HAHA!"...my god i was so, oh so, wrong. I DO NOT recommend this anime to ANYONE, the heartache!

***** What.. the fuck are you talking about? The Episode 3 reveal is supposed to make you feel bad. That's the fucking point. It's meant to be a shock, if you decide to watch after this, that's on you. I really somehow doubt that anyone killed themselves over Madoka. It's a deconstruction of Magical Girl anime, why would they do anything but play it straight on, and make it worse and worse, until you feel pain for characters. It's just good writing.

this is one of my fav animes, & magia is my fav ed of them all, & let me tell you that no one could do it any better than you did, i'm in love with the lyrics you came up with, really amazing job
