Hey everyone! I get asked a lot to do full song covers over TV-sized ones. As much as I'd like to, it costs quite a bit of money to commission really talented people to make kick ass, full-size instrumentals for me. I'm having to wean off the use of official instrumental releases because of how KZread is changing so rapidly as far as music content & copyright goes (if you haven't noticed, my Seraph of the End cover got blocked a while back). Alright, time to ramble about how I like the symbolism in the lyrics I guess. Not that I mind, I LOVE this and its symbolism. Immediately from the first few lyrics, I think of EMIYA. Stuck in a never ending dream, hopes and dreams that can't be seen, and all of that 'slowly killing me'. It definitely sounds like EMIYA, stuck as Alaya's lapdog, as a Counter Guardian, forced to kill and kill again endlessly through history. His ideal of being a hero is far away, out of his reach, and with every kill he becomes more and more jaded until he's a completely different person from Shirou. The next few lyrics on the other hand are a tossup between either Shirou, or EMIYA. *'There’s a sadness raining down on me* *And the future is looking oh so bleak* *But I’m holding on, so dearly, to precious memories'* These lyrics could mean either of the two, and I love that. It 'could' be talking about EMIYA, after all, he's definitely not happy as a Counter Guardian, and his future would most definitely be bleak since, well, he has none. As a Counter Guardian, he'd be killing people to preserve the order of the world for all eternity. And yet, he holds onto his memories, the ones that are important to him. He never forgets Saber, Rin, or Kiritsugu. Maybe Illya, I'm not quite sure there, its been a while. Memories are important to EMIYA. VERY important. For comparison, lets look at Counter Guardian EMIYA, and EMIYA Alter. EMIYA's led a shitty life as a Counter Guardian, but he holds onto his memories and though he doesn't show it, his fleeting ideals of being a hero. EMIYA Alter on the other hand has no memories. He abandoned his ideal, and slowly lost himself, until he was nothing more than a machine. He starts losing his memories, and even starts finding it difficult to recall what he did the previous day or further. All he would remember is his purpose and abilities, the only things a machine would find vital for its job, everything else would be useless information. Memories are what make EMIYA who he is, and its what ultimately stops him from killing Shirou as well. Does the line *'There really was such a man once, wasn't there?'* ring a bell? Seeing Shirou fight desperately to prove him wrong, that his ideals aren't wrong, EMIYA is forced to look into a mirror and see who he once was, and that makes him hesitate. If EMIYA Alter was in his position, he wouldn't hesitate to cut Shirou down and put a bullet in his head. And then, those lyrics could be about Shirou as well. For less dramatic reasons in a way, they could refer to him in the 'now' due to his realization on who EMIYA is. EMIYA is Shirou, (and people die when they're killed) and the fact that he turns into someone like that is a jarring realization. Besides all the crap he had to deal with, he has to come to terms with the fact that somehow, he ends up turning into EMIYA. Its probably not a happy thought for him, hence the rain of sadness. The future looks bleak if THAT is what he becomes, someone so jaded and seemingly evil, willing to trade sides and betray allies just because it seems convenient, unable to hold onto the ideals he's held since he was a child. But, memories make the Emiya, and Shirou's memories are also what helps him defeat his older self, just like how EMIYA's memories are what make him hesitate. Shirou's memories of Kiritsugu, the promise he made, the lives of the innocents and people who can still be saved, those memories help Shirou and keep him firmly rooted in his belief that his ideal of becoming a hero of justice isn't wrong. The last lyrics on the other hand, made me think of everyone's favorite tsundere, Rin (I'm not gonna analyze ALL the lyrics or I'd be here all night and its late. Yowzers.) *'You reached out to me, you let me see your light* *On the night I suffered most, you saved my life* *We found light beyond the blue horizon* *So no more tears, farewell, I’m done* *I’ll grant us love and peace for all time* *Yeah, I’ll shine'* Rin, though possibly without meaning to, gave Shirou a reason to fight. Shirou isn't just fighting to protect the lives of the many, he's also fighting for her, because the stubborn dork absolutely loves her. Despite her trying to cut ties with him and make them enemies with each other, Rin has helped Shirou time and time again, from bringing him back to life from his sudden death via Gae Bolg, to explaining about what the war was and taking him to see Kirei to get more info, to helping in the fight against Heracles. She didn't have to do any of that, if she was any other Magus from the Clock Tower participating, she would have left him for dead, stabbed him in the back, or leave him and Saber to battle Heracles while she looks out for weaknesses and for a chance to take down two birds with one stone. One of the key things about Fate/Stay Night is that the heroine isn't an 'end reward' that you get to. There's saucy scenes, but maxing the relationship isn't the end goal. No, the heroine is a key driving force. In every route, Shirou is fueled and driven on by three things. The fact that the Holy Grail War is happening and could threaten the lives of many innocent people and his friends, his ideals, and his love interest. In the main FSN route, he fights to end the Grail War, stop the bad guys, and mend Saber's heart that has been battered and beaten for so long due to the events that led up to her death by Mordred's hands, and her tarnished pride. He fights and does his best to show her that he loves her for who she is, without any lies. Shirou bares his heart for her, and for the first time in a very, VERY long time, Arturia leaves her own heart bare for someone else. Shirou. And even after the war ends, Shirou continues to fight in order to see her again. In Heaven's Feel, Shirou fights to end the Grail War, stop the bad guys, and save Sakura. Where do I even begin with this one? Sakura is a tortured soul, and the only prescription that can heal her is Shirou. And as the war drags on, things become even more complicated when bad things start happening because of Sakura. Shirou fights in order to save her, and bring her back to normalcy, to stop her before she becomes a monster (which sadly probably happens at some point in every other route besides HF). He even tempers and holds back from his ideal of being a hero at the end, because he has to stay with Sakura as her lover, and because his body gets destroyed in the end of HF and gets reconstructed from scratch thanks to best Imoutoneechan Illyasviel. In UBW, Shirou fights to end the Grail War, stop the bad guys, and stay with Rin. In this, she's the one who helps save him instead of the other way around. Rin anchors Shirou, reminding him of the harshness of reality and makes him realize the fact that he's distorted. Rin is Shirou's reality check. Not to mention that, if the Grail War didn't happen, Shirou would inevitably fall in love with her proper anyway since he admires her before the damn 5th Grail War even starts. But, I also believe that these last lyrics talk about EMIYA. Rin never really gives up on Shirou, whether its the present one or the future one, does she? She confronts EMIYA, tries to wrench out of him how he turned out like this, and even tries to make him return to her side. Even before she found out EMIYA was Shirou, she and him had a dynamic. Despite anything harsh she might say (She's a tsundere, par for the course), she trusts him. In a sense, without meaning to, she reached out to him, and helped him remember who he was. However its the *'So no more tears, farewell, I’m done'* verse that sells that these lyrics are also talking about EMIYA. For obvious reasons. At the end of the war, all the bad guys are dead or gone. Kotomine is dead, Gilgamesh is gone, Shinji is... incapacitated, the battle is won and they are the victors. EMIYA has finally seen the light beyond the horizon, a dawn that shines through the smog filled world of his Reality. Parting words with Rin after her promise to keep Shirou grounded, he says his final farewell to her. He's done. The very last lyrics, are almost a reply to Rin in a way. Rin promised to keep Shirou's head on his shoulders and keep him grounded so he doesn't end up like EMIYA and may even learn to like himself, and she tells him to do the same. In UBW, he replies that he'll do his best. And in this song, the lyrics symbolize his promise to do so with *'Yeah, I'll shine.'* Also, something else I felt happily about after listening to this, is that in the end, EMIYA does get his wish and becomes a hero of justice. In Fate/Grand Order. Which I do consider canon, I mean come on, if Nasu is the main driving force behind it then its gotta be canon. As a Servant summoned into Chaldea, EMIYA finally has his dream. He's fighting to save humanity, from a threat that will cause its extinction. No killing innocent people in order to spare others, no mass genocide, no 'Kill ten to save a hundred'. He fights to protect the human race, against a dire threat that is undoubtedly malicious in nature. *"I've seen many a battlefield, but this is something special. Saving mankind is too huge to really understand, but as long as you're fighting, I'll be there too."* He's finally a hero of justice. Christ, I went rambling again. I need to stop this. This must be my passive Noble Phantasm, Unlimited Rambling Works.

Of all Brave Shine Covers, this one (in my opinion) is the Absolute BEST! You kept faithful to the lyrics while giving meaning in an unique way the verses that are hard to translate from Japanese to English. I've been waiting so long to hear the full song and at long last, The Holy Grail finally granted my wish. FANTASTIC work Sapphire, you are amazing, keep it up! :D

My personal opinion is that AmaLee did the lyrics better, but Sapphire definitely sang better.

my favorite brave shine cover

Of all the translations I think this fits closer to the actual story of the game and Anime. You can really see this being Shiro to either Rin or Saber... or Rin to Shiro... perhaps Rin to Shiro more... I really like it.
