I think the new design is good because it’s really what those of us who are professionals need, something with higher thermal capacity so can maximize speed. If you want super sleek and light then go with the MacBook Air.

@@ThoughtsOnThings Yes, well I guess I don't see that as a bad thing or that the form is a step back. I mean the extra pound of weight is also a great heatsink. So rather I choose to see it that form meets performance.

I upgraded from MacBook Pro 2018 i7 15” 16GB/512GB Radeon 560X to MacBook Pro M1 Max 32 Core GPU, 64GB/1TB I purchased my old MacBook back in 2018 for $2799 and sold off this June for $2520. Been using my wife’s M1 MacBook Air 8GB/256Gb for photo / video editing. It’s been a hard couple of months since most wedding photos even take 60-70 GB. I ordered mine last night and BH told it will take a month or so for delivery.

Sadly, Apple took several steps back in terms of design as these new MBPs look very similar to the 2012-2013 models. The 16 is incredibly chunky and bulbous. I suspected it would be just a tad bit thicker but in person it is very thick looking and thick feeling. I was unaware how heavy it would be too. I cannot imagine traveling with the 16. It would be a real strain on my shoulders and back even if I were to carry it on my backpack. Can you imagine flying with this 16? I do like the extra screen size over the 14 and the better battery life but I think it will literally just stay on my desk forever. What is the point of buying a laptop if it’s not portable? The 14 is obviously more portable and while I haven’t seen it yet in person, I think it will be a little less chunky however when compared to the M1 13, the battery life of the 14 is inferior. I’m curious to see real world battery usage tests. 11 hours of browsing doesn’t seem enough. At the end of the day, I may just stick with the M1 13 and wait for the M2.

Keep the M1 Macbook Pro or get the Air if you care so much about the design, Apple went function over form for the first time now that Jony Ive didn't get in the way, and the same goes for weight. A majority of professionals don't care about the looks or how heavy it is, they care about the performance, cooling and ventilation, ports, and increased space for better internals compared to the previous design which always had thermal issues with more powerful chips. The M1 Macbook Pro still looks very good and is lighter, so if you wanna go form over function, you can always just keep that one. If Apple kept the previous design then all of the new upgrades wouldn't be possible. If you have such a big problem with both the form and weight, that just means these new MacBook Pros weren't targerted towards your user base to begin with. Personally, I'm gonna be getting a DBrand skin which is also an option if you want to make it look unique.

It’s so interesting though because I had the same feeling but actually the measurements are virtually the same, it’s just the tapered edge which gives the illusion of a thinner laptop on the old models, but sounds like they decided they’d rather go thicker and have better performance. They probably went too thin too soon with the old ones and realised they’d made a mistake. Still, I feel spoiled with thinness now and hard to go back 🤙

Photographers can imagine traveling with a 16 and 20-30 extra pounds of glass and camera. It’s a fraction of an inch thicker. Almost everyone using this for heavy cpu/GPU work as loves it. We want power and performance and the size isn’t a factor. Sounds like you want something that doesn’t exist, a 16” MB Air
