    Great real world review. I just wondered how you were finding the battery life? I currently have an i9 MacBook Pro which is hot, noisy and eats its battery in a few hours doing work in photoshop which is really frustrating when I’m on the road.

    Well I have not really put the efficiency to the test but everyone is saying this is the most efficient laptop basically ever at this power level so I think it's a safe bet this will be worlds better than your i9 for battery life. My 2018 15" i7 lasts like 3 hrs and I think those have basically the same battery as the i9s haha. I think they said these have a battery life of like 20 hrs...I'd check a benchmark video for that haha.

    do you ever use the laptop on your...lap? the intake vents are right beside the feet, so if you place your lap right under the feet - to prevent the laptop from sliding off - does it cover the vents? and the 16" is almost the same size as the 15", so I assume it fits in the same pack(s)? also, did you ever take the 15" on an airplane and use it on the fold-down tray? did it fit or was it too big? will the 16" work on the tray? thanks

  • @OverlandEngineer

    @OverlandEngineer

    2 жыл бұрын

    - Rarely use it on my lap - the short answer here is it probably depends on the size of your legs haha. But this laptop has some of the best thermal performance out there so depending on your work load it may never hardly need to cool. -the 16" is larger and I think it will need to have its own new size. It fits in the universal sleeves but it is thicker so anything fitted for previous models will most likely not work. -always used it on my lap on airplanes. -too big for fold down trays - doubt the 16" works on a trays very well. I always found half the issue was the depth of the laptop. So I felt like laptops in general were not great on the trays. Fine but not great.

    Made the same order, there was 16gb vs 32gb, it took a HARD amount of work to begin SSD swapping, (MaxTech) due to high speed unified memory and the efficiency of UM, you’d be better off going for 1TB as it would help with swapping, we made the right decision. A little bit overwhelmed in the past view days by TechTubers who mostly discuss about video editing, M1 Pro/Max processors, and a maxed-out RAM capacity. EDIT: Quick question, how is Matlab behaving in M1? I remember Matlab still runs under Rosseta 2 and it looks like Apple Silicon supports for Matlab is still far beyond reach.

Even with it running through Rosetta I have had no issues with it. Sheesh, that is tough but I would say if you want to game then max out the GPU cores you can afford. Since you are in mechanical engineering you will potentially do complex 3D modeling where 32GB of RAM could be helpful. I am at the mix of Biomedical and Electrical Engineering so my need for the Windows operating system is a little less than if I was strictly electrical or mechanical. That will really depend on your work flow...like the size of files and how Bridge, Illustrator and Photoshop operate...I am not super familiar with those applications so I am not sure what is all stored in RAM while you work. I tend to lean toward 32 GB is plenty and people max out 16 GB more often than they realize. You would know if you need 64GB of RAM over 32GB based on your file sizes. But I would find an older video on someone else running those applications even on PCs to see what RAM requirements they set for their workflows and file sizes similar to yours. That should give you a better idea and then you can translate that to the new Mac.

    For sure! I would say do not really worry about thermals. From what I can tell they have done really good testing on apple silicon setups and the processors seemed to be dialed to work with thermals. Also the power efficiency of these laptops also seem to help with temps. But if you ran into issues like that I would guess apple customer service would take care of it under manufacturing flaw warranty. As for 3D modeling etc I think that if it can run through rosetta on MAC OS rather than parallels it should work great. I am mainly familiar with blender the open source since I am Biomedical/Electrical (did not do much modeling for class). If you have really complex models I would guess 64 GB could be helpful. However, it sounds like you may have a beast of a PC where you potentially already have 64 GB of RAM? If I were in your shoes I would probably opt for the 16" because screen real estate is super nice for all engineering tasks and creative tasks and I would go with the 32 GB of RAM and just plan to do super intensive stuff at home of the work horse PC. I do not really know your specific projects but when you have multiple computers that would probably be my approach. I used to run a MBP and Built PC setup in Undergrad and I found I almost never used my MBP and just did everything at home on my PC because it was super fast and was connected to monitors. Those are my 2 cents haha, hopefully that helps!

    Hi @@PTR2K. Just watch out that MATLAB is VERY hungry for RAM. I'm an engineer and I use a mac 15" 2013, 16GB RAM as main working computer. For computations I have access to a desktop computer with 128GB RAM (+GPU 24GB), and a server with 1TB RAM (+GPU 2x 48GB). Yes, 128GB sometimes are not sufficient and I run out of memory there. Once the big computations are done on the servers, on my mac I run some small calculations or data analysis. Only with MATLAB, I easily reach +30GB memory usage (RAM + swap), and in those cases, it is tedious and I risk crashes which cost me time (and money). This is the main reason I need a new laptop. Since I intend to keep the mac for several years and the RAM is never enough :-D , I decided for the 64GB (+400$). At the end the upgrade to 64GB is ca. +10% of the actual cost of the laptop, and hopefully I'can reduce the $/year by extending the lifespan of the laptop (e.g. by 10%). To consider also that you cannot upgrade the RAM in a second moment, and that you do not know what you will need to do on that machine in 2y. On the other hand, I do understand that these new machines have a huge bandwidth and faster components, and 32GB RAM might be totally sufficient. If you can afford it, I'd recommend 64GB. BTW, can't you get an "education" discount with your university? E.g. directly on the apple website?

My guess it 32GB of RAM would be plenty and you could have 50+ google chrome tabs open haha. Probably not necessary but its also impossible to upgrade in the future so if you foresee it getting worse, you may regret just not getting the right spec from the get go. With many things I have purchased, I typically regret the temporary setup until I do (*fill in the blank*) approach. That is an interesting idea. I felt like there was a good mix of space gray and silver. Silver is a more classic, traditional color so maybe that is why. I think it is personal preference too. I just like darker shades and cooler colors in general so that is why I went with it.

    Because I am more concerned with if it can do the tasks I want, not if it can do all those things on battery only. Not to mention battery life is so subjective. Like do you prefer keeping your screen twice as bright as me? Do you prefer having other things refresh in the background? Do you typically have twice as many tabs open as me in the background? I am not sure how I can make a real world battery test that pleases everyone...

    It's faster to type on a short-stroke keyboard. I have the infamous failure-prone (indeed, mine is failing) butterfly keyboard and it's the best one I've ever used (when it doesn't miss or double key presses). My older mid-2014 mbp's keyboard takes more effort and is slower. Can you say if it's still close to the butterfly? (I haven't tried the improved butterfly.)

  • @OverlandEngineer

    @@heh2k Yeah I see what you mean. I just think the new keyboard is like the old one but requires less force to press the keys. The old ones I liked the amount of key travel but did not like the rubber-ish resistance I felt like made it harder to press a key. I honestly did not mind the butterfly keys either on my MBP and none ever really failed. I like more key feedback when I am typing because I feel like I can be a better typer and I cannot type fast enough where the key travel would ever play a role in my words/min. I will say the key rebound feels great. You can spam any key and it seems to have no problems at all.
