Fully agree. The 16" is full comfort when using it, even on a couch or in bed (combination of screen real estate + less noise + less heat). These main advantages easily compensate for the more weight drawback, at least to me. Coming from a 2014 15" MBP, it practically makes almost no difference. And silver of course. Classic colour all the way!

I bought the 16" Max 32 cores and 32 GB 4TB - because I was fearing the 14" would overheat on regular tasks which I HATED on my 13" intel. When I received it I was a bit laid down by the size and weight compared to the 13" I was used to. Fast forward 2 months later ... I love this Mac, and would pick the 16" any day. I got used to the size and now all the other laptops and their small screens really seem too small to work on. The heat is very moderate and I have never heard the fan once! The screen is great, the size, the luminosity, the keyboard, the speakers are so great. And man .. 4TB ... I have a lot of sound banks for music productions and still 2TB free. Overall best Mac I ever had.

Interestingly enough, the 16" MBP is literally the same size as the 15.6" 2012 MBP. The 16" is considerably thinner. And of course, the slimmer bezels for a wider screen and larger speakers make the 16" seem much larger.

Interesting video. Seems like a solid example of consumerism and how marketing affects us. I appreciate your honesty! I went through a similar exercise when deciding between 14 and 16 inch M1. I also had a hard decision between 14 and 16", but i knew already- the base model is just fine for me since even that is an overkill af. I had only budget reasons since the 16" was out of budget with 1TB SSD. It was mainly for the sake of still using a Mac - I am running a 2010 MBP 15" since nearly 12 years, repaired and upgraded it multiple times, replaced 3x the battery, but since a fan bearing starts to make bad noises some days ago - i think its time to finally go on and get a new Mac, anyways time to upgrade after 12 years.

You hit it on the nose, Jerry! I currently have my 14 inch in a box with receipt and ready to go. When you mentioned going back to the 14 inch and not really being underwhelmed but whelmed was exactly the feeling. The benefits outweigh the extra weight, hands-down. The situation I went with was 10/16/16 for both models so I ended up keeping the base model 16 inch with 1TB. Also for kicks I realized my 11 inch iPad is exactly half my 16 inch screen when in Split View and I love that.

Size was an easy choice. I loved my 17" MBP, especially for couch surfing. The M1 Max was an easy desicision because I knew I wanted to power 3-4 4k monitors for work. I struggled with 32 vs 64 GB of ram. I went with the 64 GB even though it took an extra month and a half to arrive. I don't regret it one bit. 16GB was always a limiting factor for me on the 2017 MPB. 32 just didn't offer enough head room for the next few years. It's not rational and I don't need it but when I spend 8+ hours a day working on the machine it's nice to never be slowed down or limited.

The weight issue is a big deal if you are lugging it around a lot. I went from a 2012 13” MacBook Pro weighing in at 4.5 lbs to a 2016 MacBook Air at 2.96 lbs. The 1.5 lbs difference was huge! My current machine is a 2020 M1 MacBook Air. I barely notice it’s in my bag. For students who have to walk long distances on campus the weight consideration is significant.

Thanks Jerry. I have the exact specs that you suggested in a 16inch. The main reason I go this size is the viewable screen size increase is mainly in HEIGHT which is really important in viewing documents especially is you want to look at a whole A4 page - or two side by side. It makes reviewing and reading documents much easier instead of needing to squint or only being able to see part of the page with the 14 inch.

Initially I was interested in the 14" MBP but am tending toward the silver 16" M1 Pro 10-Core, 32GB, 1TB for use on my desk in clamshell mode with external 4k monitor and stereo speakers. When travelling, for most things I have other small Android and Windows devices and an iPhone - I'm not expecting to travel AND edit videos. Travel and e-mail or check-in online yes. So it will be occasionally portable but mostly static. The 16" has much better cooling than the 14". I'm pleased to see my rationale aligning with other people's.

I do mainly the same tasks that you do, and I've been contemplating which one to get. I had an M1 Macbook Air, which I loved, and was the best Windows laptop I had ever used. But the screen was too small. I loved the quiet, and I loved the portability. My previous laptop was a Dell Inspiron 17R, which weighs in at a hefty seven pounds or so. So I think the 16" will work just fine. My ideal configuration would be a Macbook Pro 16 with a Max chip (for future proofing) and 32 gig of RAM and 2 or 4 gigs of disk space. I do use Lightroom CC to process RAW images, so while speed is not imperative, a speed boost would be welcome. The Air that I had was 1.5 times faster than my current i5 PC desktop. Thanks for the review/comparison/explanation. Much appreciated.

  • @claytonpetree527

I can see why you like it. I have 2nd guessed my choice of the 14" when it was revealed just how poorly cooled it is. But I didn't buy a MAX so it's not throttling, the fans don't "come on", and the thing is darn fast. I also want to be able to watch it on the plane and the 16" is too big for that. The battery life isn't all that great, but 90% of the time it's connected to an outlet anyway. So I'm loving the laptop but REALLY missing gaming a bit on bootcamp. They really need to get that Windows ARM license sorted out asap. Apple has already said it's no problem to do it.

This is why i have been leaning towards the 14 replace both the 15' and M1 macbook air. I haven't seen measured the dimensions to see how the 16 would fit. In my current backpacks, They were designed for macbook 15 inch. I would agree that having a 16inch is amazing, but there are times when I truly appreciated the m1 air for it's size.

thank you, this is actually pretty helpful. I've been flip flopping on this decision since they came out. I've always been a 12-13" kinda laptop person. Right up to graphics and video projects on a 12" ibook. You know, the white plastic ones from the mid naughties. I have NEVER had a laptop above 13", that sounds like blasphemy. And now, the first time that a smaller MBP has similar performance (albeit louder/hotter) to its big brother, I'm over here like "maybe 16???" And you said something eye opening, and I think this is key: My style of travel changed. I no longer daily carry to class. If I needed a device to do carry-able note-taking for seminars or so, I'd get something else (ipad, an older air) rather than try to make my "workhorse" machine _also_ be portable. The "travel" I now do is from my desk to the sofa or bed. Or a longer trip, but once I get to the destination I can set up shop there so you only pack and lug it two ways. And having a bigger screen seems actually maybe *better* for that, AND it doesn't scorch your lap. On top of that, syncing notes from another device is now so easy, and NAS's have gotten faster and I'm told now you don't have to be tethered to an external drive on your desk , even for creative work?? (curious what your experience is there) Well, that cinches it. Or so I say now, maybe this is just flip flop #36. But I don't think I can swing the max, I hope that isn't a mistake but ghhh that's a lot of $$$ for something I probably don't need.

My current laptop, now 7 years old and needing replacement, was a top spec Dell 16inch with 4K display. I've owned, and traveled with, 17 inch laptops so 16 inch isn't a problem for me particularly since these newer laptops with minimum bezels are smaller than earlier generation laptops with 15 inch screens. I have an order for a 16 inch MacBook Pro Max with 64GB RAM and 2TB storage which is only lacking the even larger storage options of up to 8TB. Here's my reasoning for this model versus, say, the Pro with 16GB or 32GB ... I don't upgrade every year and as I mentioned before, my current laptop is 7 years old, so getting a laptop that will last me longer makes more sense than buying a lower spec model but replacing it a year earlier. Let's say a lower spec model lasts me 4 years and the one I order lasts me 5 years, after 4 years I'd get a new unit more powerful than the higher spec model I ordered BUT a year later, if I went with the higher spec model, I'd get a new unit even more powerful than the one a year earlier. And, for 4 of 5 years I'd have had the more powerful model all along. It's hard to make a pure economic evaluation, but if the higher spec model gets you one more year then the delta cost is kind of a wash. I should mention that mu current Dell laptop has been very good but the touchpad has been delaminating for a year or more and at this point is mostly useless -- I use an external mouse. I also have a 6 year old desktop I built for video and image editing as well as CAD work and it to is getting a little long in the tooth so replacing my current laptop AND desktop with a new laptop more powerful than both just makes even more sense.

the problem with your argument... We are talking more or less about the "1st Gen" of Apples ARM CPUs... If the M1 Pro is getting outdated and "too slow", you better dont hope for the M1 Max to be "fast enough" for another year, its probably already "as slow" as the M1 Pro. Thats btw the biggest problem i have with this generation of Macs... as much i like them (and ordered a 16" base model)... they will probably be the first Macs next to the regular M1 chip to be outdated. I have also upgraded my 2010 MacBook Pro. With fast SSD, maxxed out Ram.. but OUTDATED ARCHITECTURES are not getting usable again with "more power". And as sad it is... if the M1 Pro is outdated, the Max will be too, especially since the CPU is more or less the same while the biggest difference is the GPU.

I am struggling with the choice. I had made up my mind to get the MBP M1 Max 64Bg 1TB when it first came out. It's physically barely any bigger than my current mid-2012 and I like big screens. I am not a gamer or a power user but my mid-2012 MBP has taught me that the more RAM I have, the more likely it will last as long as the current one has. However, in the UK, it's a 1 month delivery from order cycle. Also, I am wondering what the M2 chip will bring and, finally, my iPad Pro 9.7" 1st Gen is also reaching obsolescence because of its lack of RAM so I may have to update that. And I'm not made of money. I continue to procrastinate.

And I am saying this even as I like how the color looks in real life as well. The main reason is that dust, little crumbs etc visually pop on that color. I don't know why. I had a silver Retina MBP for 7 years and I didn't notice dust and crumbs so often or that severe. A reson for silver in the M1 Pro and M1 Max MacBook Pros is because the keyboard has a black background there is a nice visual contrast with the silver body.

I know - even the regular M1 is for 95% of the people overkill. The M1 Pro already for 98% at least, The Max for 99%+. Even when it comes to the content creators, rendering etc, there is barely any reason for "needs" of a M1 Max.

With only 5% increase in price from Pro to Max in a 16” 32 GB package is it future proofing or just foolish to get the Max.? We have no 4K video in our workflow and that $200 is half way to a fast external SSD solution.

My issue with the 14" is that the viewing angles are so narrow, you have to sit perfectly still infront of the display and you can't move your head a bit (not to the sides, not up, not down) or you'll experience colour and contrast shift. It might be minute but it's enough to make me feel dizzy and almost sick. So working with the 14" is not possible at all. I'd have to see whether the 16" is any better in that regard but I'm not too hopeful.

@@JerrySchulze it reminded me of how the first UHD IPS panels looked like, almost as if someone forgot to install another diffusion layer. In large format photography you get a similar effect when you use a groundglass without a Fresnel lens

In First Class, definitely. In Business Class, maybe. In standard coach, no way. Just wait until the SOB in front of you cranks back his seat to snore on a transatlantic and he shatters your 17 inch screen.

I got a similarly spec'ed-out 16" MBP for one reason: Future-proofing. This thing replaced my 2009 13" base spec MBP, yes, you read that right, I used that sucker for 12 years, and I feel comfortable knowing it will last me a while without buyer's remorse setting in, thinking I'll need to upgrade again anytime soon. Yes, it's hella overkill for me now, but get back with me in 5-10 years...

I had a hard time deciding between the 14" and 16", mainly because i wanted at least 1TB SSD since its not replacable/upgradable, but the 1TB version would be over budget on the 16". The "benefit" of the 14" could have been also that i probably like the smaller footprint and weight of the 14". But then there were these advantages: - bigger battery on 16", so longer battery usage - unbinned M1 Pro chip in 16" base model - I am used to my still running 2010 15" MBP, and since the 16" 2021 is the same size and still lighter i think the 16" is just fine to enjoy a proper screen. - resolution, im not really hi res addicted, but i wanted finally a proper "hi res" screen for photoshop and co! The biggest problems i hopefully dont encounter (otherwise i would be pretty mad at the MacBook...): The glowing areas around bright pixels, could be a huge problem in editing/stretching stacked astroimages. But on the other side... im still using a 12 year old TN Panel on my MacBook Pro 2010 for editing which is more or less.... BAD AF

@@JerrySchulze what finally settled me into the 16” was the size and space for cooling. From everything I’ve looked at it seems the 16” just runs cooler, and I’m not huge on the fans having to do a ton of work. At that point the extra $200 was a no brainer. And yea, I have orders and canceled orders all over my history there as well. Lol
