I got my 16" M1 Pro a few days ago, mint condition, 1 month young and saved a whopping 800€! I prefer the Pro over the Max, since thermals and battery are much better and the GPU is still powerful enough for almost any task. The screen, speakers, keyboard, design, etc. are AWESOME

I do not think so. The 32 core GPU can be compared with an RTX 2070/ RTX 2080 depending on the application. And: Apple will only bring a 3D API competitive to DirectX 12 and Vulkan with MacO's Ventura.

I don't think one should buy it just for the sake of upgrading. Whenever a new Apple product hits the market, people are excited and you have hundreds of KZreadrs repeat the exact same things over and over. If one doesn't know that they really need it, they shouldn't buy it just because it's new and shiny.

Not sure why so many people like the MacBook keyboards I think my iPad Pro magic keyboard is better and the surface pro/book , razer laptops etc are all better. Obviously just preference though. But a I’m saying is I think it’s a woNderful laptop but it’s people over play what it’s capable of it’s still a laptop without a dedicated gpu and costs only 4k

Thanks! Enjoyed the video and found it useful. I appreciated your commentary on the Studio Display. My wife's 2014 iMac is getting slower and slower, so I may end up giving her this 2019 iMac and buying a 5K display to use with my 16" M1 Pro MBP. Speaking of which: Weight is relative. I'm a little (5'8"/160 pound) old (80 years) man in good shape. My biggest problem with the 2021 MBP and my 2015 15" MBP is how slippery they for old fingers with fingerprints about worn off, so I put them in inexpensive (twenty bux) textured cases - problem solved. For my use, the $200.00 cost increment to get the screen real estate trumps the slight increase in weight over the 14" M1 Pro MBP. The battery life of the 2021 is three to four times the battery life of the 2015 - a huge feature.

yes, thank you. I pick up my 16 McbPro Max 16" 64ram 4tb this evening. I know it might be too much to some people...but I'm running Pro Tools with a lot of plug-ins while mixing tv shows and other broadcastable mediums such as music videos, concerts, etc. (glad to drop that cheese grater Mac Pro finally), all Adobe products with multiples on at a time since I took publishing a monthly magazine as well. So with all of that said, I find myself at a cattle ranch and get an email (via Starlink! yay) from a tv or music client and I need to turn on that mode and with the computer I'm currently working with, a McbPro 16" 2019 that is 'maxxed out' at 32 ram, I can finally just 'get things done' as I need to and wherever I need to. I'm super excited to finally get a laptop that keeps up with me. Almost got the mac studio but then I'd have to get another laptop anyway, so why not just get one...for now, haha. Now I just need a nice monitor and I'm at the ready. thank you Mark.

My new 16” MBP is almost exactly the same size while better in any way. I was originally planning on getting the 14” but it just felt so small when I actually got hand on in the store. The 16” is fantastic, and fits easily in any normal-sized, 20L or so backpack.

I look at my desk with 3 monitors and a projector, I have to get the max. I’ve been carrying my 2019 16inch in my 25 pound backpack around daily all around my city for almost 3 yrs now. I’ve needed to have 2 screen replacements because there is so much pressure on my back that the dust on the palmrests have engraved literal holes on my display. The keyboard keys rub on the screen too and its just horrendous. Before this computer I used to carry a 2017 razer blade pro 17 inch that is 6 pounds heavy everywhere and taking 6 or 8 flights a year. I now have some serious shoulder and back pain and exercise is a must but damn, there are really downsides lemme tell ya

I waited years to upgrade from my 15" MacBook Pro early 2012, which also meant putting my desire of getting into film making on hold. I collected so much video material from travels and such over the last few years and putting it on hold on harddrives till I could justify buying a new mac (the 2012 MacBook still runs effortlessly). That was till the new 16" M1 Max MacBooks were release. And it absolutely delivers and puts a smile on my face every day since I bought it. Alone the screen is worth going 16". Yes, it is an expensive machine but if its keeps running as long as my previous MacBook it's worth every Penny to me.

My 2015 MBP has been AMAZING! But's she's tired, and as the programs get bigger, it slowed down. Battery is shot, 30 min max( runs like a champ plugged in). Sooo, I am ready to pull the trigger on one of these. You spoke about too much power, I see it like this. - Today > Tomorrow - . Today is peak performance (Higher the bar, slower the decline) Tomorrow peak demand (larger program demand, reduces power to meet in the middle). I think a cheaper machine dwindles faster, costing you more. The FCPX lag you mentioned, when they fix it, will chomp another bite of the memory. Spending 4k on it isn't nice, but I will feel good about it.

Hi Mark, thank you for the review. I'm going back and forth on what I want to buy. I was interested in the M1 iMac for the screen but still want a laptop so was thinking either a 14/16 MacBook M1 Pro and pairing with the Studio Display, or just the 16 inch on it's own. I'm one of those people that don't seem to notice promotion (have it on 10.5 iPad Pro), but worried about colour. I compared the screens of my iPhone 11 with a 12 Pro Max and noticed the same photos on both had much better colour on the 12 Pro Max, iPhone 11 looked a bit washed out. Will I get that same sort of difference with the Studio Display compared to the new 14/16 MacBook Pro's since they lack HDR? or do the screens looks fairly similar except for the deep blacks and sometimes bright areas for HDR? It's an expensive monitor and very hard to know if it's the right choice for me when checking reviews. I'm aware anything will be an upgrade to be fair since I'm currently using a 2015 13 inch MacBook Air with no monitor. Interested in your thoughts since you use both, thank you.

I went with the 14in MBP but got a good deal on a higher maxed one than I planned for, simply because it offered 10 core CPU and 16 core GPU for nearly $400 less than Apple is selling the same model with the same specs. It also had 16gb ram which I wanted, and the higher rated power supply. I'm only on day 4 with it and so far I absolutely love it. There's a warmth to using the keyboard but it's not hot, and the screen is fantastic. I knew what specs I wanted, so I was able to decide on what model before looking for a good price. I went with the 14in mainly due to the price difference between it and the 16in. I also felt 14" would suit my space on my desk the best. I would have been quite happy to go with the M1 Air, but for the difference in camera specs. The camera on this is 1080p and the one on the Air Pro is still only 720p. I ordered a monitor for it, but it arrives tomorrow. We'll see how that goes. I have it connected to an older one - and let me just say - prores on a monitor not made for it is pretty sad and annoying! Also! KUDOS for not accepting any sponsor money from MacPaw and thank you for talking about how they've been taking care of us Mac users as well as their work for the people of Ukraine. They are an amazing business and fantastic people.

@@shotbybennihana I've found the memory 'just works' and have not run into any issues with it. At first I monitored it constantly because I was coming from and iMac that wasn't keeping up even with 100gb of RAM. After a few weeks of nothing interesting happening and no problems, I stopped worrying about it and have since gone on to using whatever apps I need to and haven't had a situation yet where the memory has had issues. I do have a thing that quits Chrome if I haven't used it in half an hour so that probably has helped squash any issues with Chrome using too much memory. Last week I edited a 15 minute video using iMovie (it's all I have at the moment) and had many other apps open as I needed some photos from my library and needed to create a thumbnail image for the video file. I didn't have any problems whatsoever. I did have a large swap file created, but creates and deletes or shrinks the swap file as needed. Aside from having to have USB dongles on either side of it, this MBP has really been a winner. Sorry it took me awhile to respond!

I now totally get your worry about carrying it but IMHO because it's heavier you will be more careful with it. I have found an old SwissGear model that is the only thing I trust on expensive laptops. I bought extra to save when it looked like they would quit making them. I usually only carry mine around the house but definitely has a "death grip" on it, lol! As noted on your survey I've carried around much heavier laptops for years so it seems light but even those, while expensive, were a lot less than my MBP and I only have the M1 Pro version! Personally after using PCs since the late 70s as a child then being in IT since the early 90s with tons of desktops and laptops, the M1 MBP models are indeed game changers, I've never used a laptops in as many ways or as many places as I have this one... ever.

Yesterday I bought 256gb M1 MacBook Air. I write and do admin and publicity for my local Branch of Samaritans. I use cloud or remote storage so HDD size isn’t an issue for me. However what I think unites us all is the efficiency of the M1 chip and battery time etc. Plus the Apple O/S just works for me. So I think Apple is serving both low end people like me and pro users like yourself. Thanks again for a great video.

I know you said you'll know if you need to go higher BUT I had the original 13" M1 Macbook Air after I was challenged to try it. I bought the base spec as I've never successfully stayed in Mac ecosystems and it was cheap. What a laptop! It was awesome. Its portability is unbelievable, battery life was impossible and performance brilliant. Within months I wished I had got the 16 gig RAM and 500GB as I probably would still be using it, instead, I was looking at an upgrade. Well, I managed to get the 14" Macbook pro base model and sell the Macbook Air. The Macbook pro is an excellent upgrade and I see the value BUT The air is so much lighter and portable and I never worried about the $1500AUD Air, I do worry about the $3000AUD Macbook Pro. I could see myself considering a downgrade to a new M2 Air in the future. That is a big win for Apple Silicon.

For my current purposes (photography, 4K video editing), it has tremendous performance that will certainly be sufficient for the next 5 or more years. It replaces an old Mac Pro from 2010. I don't regret a penny from this great machine. You might want to mention how fantastic the XDR display is, so you can definitely edit photos or videos on the go in true color. I run my laptop off a Sony 55" 4K TV or an Eizo CG monitor. Mine was a new demo unit for which I paid just € 3,300.- instead of € 3,850,- 😁

I have 16 M1 Max, 64 ram and 1tb ssd. I’m pro photographer and use it strictly for photography. But I have problems with it. When I open Psb files, it takes between 2 and 3 minutes for them to open in Ps. Psd files generally are also not snappy, it takes between 10 and 20 seconds for them to open. In addition to that, when I’m in the process of saving the open file, and then in the same time go to create a smart object, a dialog box pops up with the forward moving progress bar, it takes about 4-5 minutes each time for this to finish. Can’t to anything but wait. I tried resetting and redownloading photoshop. But didn’t help.

I got tempted into getting the 14” base MBP and it’s an amazing device but it’s very heavy for a laptop IMO… I only got it as I had an extremely good deal on it, it’s over powered for my needs though in all honesty, the standard M1 is perfect for me, so I may look at selling and getting the new MacBook Air when it launches later this year… not sure yet though.

I bought the 16" Pro, non-Max. I find it to be pretty beastly for video editing (I mostly use Resolve but dabble with FCP) but there are things that can bog it down so possibly the Max would come in handy for people who do a lot of motion graphics and compositing. I have a 2015 15 inch MacBook Pro for my business and kept it in a sleeve with foam since new, carried it across USA 3 times , work out of coffee shops, restaurants and off tailgates 6 to 8 hours several days a week and it is very noticeably bent. The problem with the sleeve I have for heavy use is it has a outside zip up pocket which Inside the pocket I put the Apple charger and cable, backup hard drive and cable, pens, etc and keep it zipped shut. When zipping closed it is always a challenge as the extra gear in the pocket creates pressure on the zipper both the pocket zipper and the main sleeve zipper. This extra gear crammed inside the pocket has slowly, we are talking 7 years of slowness, bent the laptop. My new 16 inch Max will go in the same type sleeve this time without the charger because of all day battery life and without the external hard drive since this new one has a 2tb drive .

I have the 16" MBP with the M1 Pro chip, 16GB of RAM, and 1TB of storage. If I could do it all again, I would've went for more RAM. Yeah, 16GB of RAM SEEMS like plenty, but not if you do a lot of multi-tasking like I do. Generally, when I'm editing 1080p video on Final Cut, I also run Pixelmator Pro, Music (play some tunes), and Audacity for cleaning up audio. Running all those programs simultaneously definitely limits the amount of video frames I can edit in Pixelmator Pro. For instance, I convert multiple video frames to JPEG format to clean-up my green screen backgrounds and the app will cease functioning. So, I close some of the frames running in Pixelmator Pro, then the program resumes functioning. Very annoying!

The president of Ukraine was installed by the same Ukrainian Kos her oligarch Igor Makarov, that own Barimsa Energy, the same criminal that was paying crackhead Hunter Biden $86,000 a month for ?? For his father Joe, illegally giving special treatment to Igor Makarov such things as US funding and other goodies taken from the American people. You really want to help them, because that's who you'll end up helping in reality. Igor Makarov got his start of his criminal Kosher Mafia enterprise when the Soviet Union broke up and he took the spoils of the country by plundering it from the citizens. That's how all the other Ukrainian and Russian Kos her Oligarchs obtained their wealth - by plunging the countries upon the breakup of the Soviet Union.

Macs are "poorly" designed to have limited lifespan, so you will be forced to buy another Mac sooner rather than later. Coincidence? Apple's decisions to almost always provide insufficient cooling reflect this, so if you must buy a Mac, buying a lower level device which will produce less heat due to its less powerful processor is the best solution: e.g., all in one Macs are particularly stupid buys. I had someone that I know try to sell me an all-in-one whose gorgeous, outrageously expensive screen turned off after a little time of being on because it was overheating. I established that by pointing a powerful fan at the side of the thing's display, so it would keep it cool. Then, it stayed on longer, but who wants to work with a computer that needs a noisy, powerful fan blowing your hair sideways as it cools the all-in-one Mac. At any rate, the display would turn off after a longer while, so it was useless for working with it all day…
