    When your not stressing the base 16” you can charge it using a 20 watt iPhone brick through USB-C. So no need to drag the 140Watt brick around. Just leave the big brick at your edit desk. The 16” recognises the iPhone brick, as an iPhone brick and reverts to a charge demand that doesn’t damage the brick. I suspect it also slightly improves the 16” battery’s future lifespan because that 20W charge is most definitely slow- but still not as slow as one might imagine. I find the 20w using usb-c is convenient when watching Netflix in bed. 1% of charge every couple of minutes with the screen at about 70%.

  • @slipoch6635

    @slipoch6635

    2 жыл бұрын

    The test I saw had 3 12k streams at 3:1 compression in BMRaw and the M1 couldn't handle 1 of them with a couple of colour correction layers in Resolve (Adobe are notoriously poor programmers, so I would avoid premiere for any benches). AVID would also be an option. So I think it would depend on the codec used, if you are using the Apple-owned pro-res, then yes it probably will work well, but if you use the unsupported codecs then you will see the raw power of the CPU has to come to the fore, and while I think it could give the old intel i9 14nm cpu a real run for it's money, the power limitation of the SOC holds it back.

    I bought a SanDisk G-Drive Pro SSD 2TB for my 16“ 16GB/1TB M1 Pro MacBook Pro. It’s as fast as the internal ssd. Leave all 6k/50 fps BMPCC BRAW 1:8 files on the external drive and work on a 4k timeline in Davinci Resolve. Some frames are dropped, but it’s not an issue. Very similar to my iMac Pro with 128 GB RAM. Render times for 5:11 minutes graded 6k/50fps BRAW footage to 4k H.265 with Davinci Resolve on the MacBook: 5:36 minutes and to 8k H.265 20:24 minutes. Same job on iMac Pro needs more than 10 hours for the 8k on my iMac Pro.

    @JRW yeah that was a big reason in my decision to go with the M1 pro. I’m not a video editor and even if I did I wouldn’t be doing 6k or 8k video editing. As a society, We’re just beginning to transition into widely adopted 4k. I though that using fast charging would account for the drop in battery life but I’ve been hearing a mixed bag of results when it comes to overall battery life. Some tests show that the m1 max has 1 hour less, mobiletechreview says 2 hours, and the verge says 6 hours. But what you mentioned about idle drain is what concerns me. Apple devices are great at maintaining battery life when idle or not in use. If the max drains more then the pro would be even more of a no brain for me

    Low-level software engineer here. Though I still haven't come up to speed on the intricacies of the M1 architecture just yet, my suspicion is that the screen capture is repeatedly flushing the unified memory cache, temporarily causing all render threads to halt while waiting on the data to be reloaded from the SSD. BTW, the M1 Max has double the memory bandwidth of the M1 chip, and though that wouldn't prevent the above scenario it would allow the system to recover a little faster.

    Be interesting to see how it handles 6-8k BMRaw, theoretically it should be quick as true raw codecs do not require huge amounts of CPU to decode. Did your old imac pro have a video transcoder card in it? Any prores should run smoothly due to the decoder/encoder chip in the M1. Be interesting to see it up against something with a dedicated quadro for video editing.

    "...theoretically it should be quick as true raw codecs do not require huge amounts of CPU to decode." Man, I am glad I finally hear someone say this. I was "suspecting" this to be the case, but I was never sure. You pretty much only see people testing PC's using RAW files, and I was wondering why!? I always thought that heavily compressed files, such as GoPro footage, should be used to test systems because they are compressed. I guess they use RAW files because most "pros" shoot in RAW. You mention something else I really find interesting: "decoder/encoder chip in the M1"... I remember wondering why my Dual XEON E5-2697v2, 64Gb, Gtx780Ti computer cannot playback GoPro footage smoothly, but my phone/GoPro can!? When asked in a few Forums why that is, I was told that my phone (Note 10+) and the GoPro have decoders/encoders build in that are "made" for playing back those files...If that is the, I was asking why no one makes a encoder/decoder card for a few hundred bucks that I install in my Pc and BAM, I can playback all kind of files...I never got an answer so I really do not know if there is such a card or not. I guess I have to Google it real quick... Thanks

    @@fc1133 There used to be decoder/encoder cards and often you will find the cheaper quadro and firepro cards will have onboard codec support (more expensive ones are primarily for 3d), but from the 20x nvidia gaming cards onwards it can use nvenc to decode/encode 264/265 footage and you can use the pro drivers and a few other accelerated codecs (unsure specifically what is supported). The GTX 780 was a gaming card for the time, it wasn't designed for 3d/video editing work so you won't be getting much in the way of acceleration. Yeah the bottlenecks on raw files are hard drive and memory speed. CPU is relatively low. BMRaw does have a 12:1 compression version which should up the ante a bit.

    @@slipoch6635 Dude, I learned more from your comment then I did searching forums for answers! : ). Everything makes sense now! I used to just go by benchmark performance and though that the higher the number (score) the better it is for playing back GoPro files. I was wrong. But since I now know why I was wrong, and why benchmark numbers are not all that important, I still wonder why they are not selling stand alone H.264/265 cards anymore!? I mean, the CPU in my z fold 3 (Snapdragon 888) cannot be faster then my Laptops i7-10510U, but it plays back GoPro files with ease. Thanks to you I know that's because my phone has a h.264/265 decoder/encoder build in, right? If so, that hardware cannot be that expensive once you remove all the other hardware. Getting my point? Anyhow, I find this stuff really fascinating. Thanks!!!

    @@fc1133 Correct, I think GoPro have their own codec for video, like ProRes it is proprietary, so every implementation would have to pay for it, now on a lot of the cards they have the HEVC deccoder/encoder acceleration (HEVC is a codec in the x265 family I believe), but your card is a bit too old for that. I think Go PRo uses HEVC, but it could be custom as well. BMRaw is free so anyone can use it. Pro-Res is gimped on PC because Apple own it. (kinda similar to the pc versions of safari and quicktime), but i have found HEVC and x265 seem to work better on PC's than an Apple with the same hardware (x86).

Question-is that when you are using the MBP for Final Cut, or just generally, like when manipulating a lot of .jpeg files? Can you expound on the “half full” statement? Thanks. Great video, thanks. SSDs have a very limited read/write number compared to spinning disk hard drives, typically like with a phone battery you do not want to run them 'full' because then all sectors on the ssd are being read/written a lot (due to temp/scratch/swap storage for the OS), in particular the latest version of MacOS used on the M1 does use a tone of space, even just for web browsing (1.5tb per day in temp writes, just browsing the net) So if you keep your usage low (I would normally say ~75% but with the OS saving that much rubbish then ~50% is reasonable) your drive will last longer, because as it accruse bad sectors it will use others. So never fill up a SSD used for the OS. If they do not fix this, then the ssd will have a shelf life of ~2 years, the issue here is it is part of the soc system. Does the M1 allow you to boot from an external tb4 drive after the internal drive has died? no-one seems to know, Apple have not answered this question at all.

    Fantastic review! As a full-time video editor, the M1 Max seems overkill for HD, 4K, and occasional 8K footage. It’s interesting how so many reviews are focused on the Max and not the Pro as the Max seems to be for those who need the added power for real-time graphics and intensive rendering. For most, including me, the M1 Pro should be an enormous upgrade. Thanks for putting me at ease with the Resolve demo- the Pro seems really impressive!

    I agree, i think the M1 Pro is insane value specifically because it seems like it will handle like 80% of what people will throw at it. The M1 Max seems like it's for that upper 10% of content creation or even mainly just for future proofing.

    My guess is the max would be more geared towards someone developing 3-D graphics. I think if you’re going to use this as a gaming unit, it might be worth upgrading to the Max too. However, if it’s going to be used as a gaming unit, it would probably be better to save the thousand dollars and put that towards a real gaming desktop that can be upgraded. Personally I would rather buy this and use the thousand dollars on peripherals, like an external docking station and a large monitor. Most of my work is in Photoshop, Illustrator, and the occasional after effects and final cut to record and develop lectures for class. This unit will work just fine. I’m going to be going with the 16 inch, mostly for the monitor because if I’m going to travel with it on rare occasions or move it from room to room because I’m watching my kids, I want the larger desktop space. Anyway, I’m just throwing in some thoughts from other consumers out there.

    Just a guess but when your exporting its using the hardware encoder built into the M1 chip and maybe the screen recorder is also using and trying to use the hardware encoder too. One reason why export and playback works better on the m1

    Thanks for the vid. Looks good, but I suspect that 16GB isn't enough memory for your massive picture export (which is why it took so long) and may be a contributing factor in your screen capture issues. Not that I've any special knowledge there, but I've had screen capture issues on my Base M1 Mini that was apparently memory related. Also, a recent youtube vid I saw demonstrated the huge memory requirements for picture exports. You may be able to check/confirm/disprove my guess by watching your Memory pressure on Activity Monitor while you are doing the export and running screen capture in the manner you were when it hiccuped. Good luck, I hope you decide the base is good enough, for what you need, but if not, the incremental costs are not too steep, at least.

  • @slipoch6635

    @slipoch6635

    From a hardware perspective 16gb is plenty for image exports and screen recording (4/8 is more than enough for that task depending on what else you are running), this may be where the decoding/encoding chip falls over (where it accelerates video processing normally) and the system is relying more on the raw CPU power, rather than the sub-chip systems. If the export is flushing the memory cache, then as stated by @Mike-Simms below, it will cause a lag while it has to repeatedly reload the data.

It seems to be specifically created for screen capture, whether windows, specific regions, or the entire screen. Through options you can select where the capture goes, and if you record your screen a circle with a square in it appears in a status icon in the menubar - hit that to stop the recording. It may use the same framework(s) as QuickTime though - I'd test it to see.
