He would have put newspapers on the seat to act as a booster seat so she could see out of the window, thus helping with her motion sickness. She likely had no idea it's purpose when she was a wee one. Not completely uncommon for those in his generation to use old dept store catalogues as booster seats.

I used to get travel sick a LOT, so i used to sit on newspapers too, but i also got travel sick at the exact same point every time we went to the nearest city, that point was next to a forest and i was convinced the trees made me sick, so every time we got close to the trees i hid away and tried to hide from the trees haha

Don't worry Lucy. Sitting on a newspaper was the done thing when I was a kid. My Mother swore by it. I think it has more to do with preventing you from reading it, so your eyes see the movement your ears sense, rather than staring at an unmoving page.

As a Yank, I must say we don’t hear nearly enough Northern accents from Brits on our TV, though I watch tons of UK shows, and I’m in love with Yorkshire and Geordie voices. (eg while I love Stephen Fry or even Rob Beckett, sometimes I prefer to hear Johnny Vegas or Ross Noble.) Quick question; would you transcribe her “No” at 4:25 as “Nehrr” or “Noo-eh”? All in good fun- I love both her and her husband. Just trying to figure out how I might spell out dialogue for those attempting to understand and replicate such adorable regionalisms. :)

@GavTatu

Sooo.... it's not really true.
It's an ancient reference, but she reminds me of Gracie Allen. Which kind of makes Jon Richardson George Burns.
Reading makes you travel sick, because what your eyes are seeing is not the same as what your balance fluids in the brain are experiencing. This disconnect causes the travel sickness. So, if someone is reading a newspaper and feeling sick, telling them to sit on the newspaper would actually work. Then they'd be forced to look out of the window and then what their eyes are seeing will match with the movement.
On Loose Ends today she was asked about Harl. I wondered where that was as she is from Hull, pronounced Ull.
