From the 1976 album A New World Record, Jeff Lynne wrote this tune about suffering the loss of a love. From the Spanish orchestral beginning, it rocks on into a masterpiece. The beautiful strings throughout make an enjoyable setting for a great tune. Patti Quatro does the vocals, uncredited, during the "higher and higher" part. Such a great song. Great reaction. "Rockaria" - absolute YES - and "Can't Get it Out of My Head."
When ELO brought the orchestra into rock music, we had never heard anything like it. It made us feel like we never had, either. Just joyous music that is great to sing along with.
I have my older brother to thank for turning me on to ELO, Billy Joel, Elton, Stevie Wonder, The Doors, Gap Band….and on and on in the 70s and early 80s.
The bow moves that Jay mentioned are: Legato - normal smooth now movements Spiccato - short detached strokes with a bouncing bow Pizzicato - plucking the string instead of bowing I played the viola (similar to the violin but slightly bigger and lower notes) growing up and still love orchestral instruments.
ELO is one of the best musical groups ever, Jeff is an absolute genius. He has worked with so many musicians, & his “Traveling Wilbury’s” contributions were great as well. Y’all did this & keep ‘‘em coming!
I’m 62 years old and have been to many concerts in my life, I have to say ELO was by far the best. Showed up with a full orchestra on stage and sounded great, you would have thought you were listening to the studio recordings. Being dead center in the 11th row was sublime!

Saw them in the 70s and then saw them a couple years ago in Philly. Still awesome!
Jeff Lynn created a sound that could never be re-created. An absolute genius.
If someone ever asks me which artist I would like to be, Jeff Lynne would be the answer. The immense musical talent he has! He can sing and can play several instruments. He is a songwriter and a producer for his own band as well as for other artists. The list of people he worked with is awesome. And with all that he stays humble and he is funny & I like his Brummie accent. ;)
Jeff Lynne is simply brilliant. ELO truly are his brainchild. That’s why that music has stood the test of time.
Just to let you know Jeff Lynne was a good friend of George Harrison. He played at the studio with him You are going to notice Beatles’s music influence upon Electric Light Orchestra.
Some people have said to me that all the orchestral stuff is surprising. I have to point out to them that it is the electric light ORCHESTRA.
gotta share this. In 1977 my wife was pregnant with our first child "a boy" who is now 44. at the time i had just bought ELO " Out of the blue" double cassette tape.We played it cranked up as kids would do with great speakers. every time the baby would start moving around. to this day ELO is still one of his all time favorites.

The plucking technique is called "pizzicato," which comes from the Italian word "pizzicare" which means to pinch. BTW, check out ELO's cover of "Roll Over, Beethoven," it COOKS!
Not a single Bad Song. Saw them in 1978 Out of the Blue Concert & Jeff Lynne's ELO 2018. JUST FANTASTIC Jeff is a Genius he plays about 11 different instruments. Turn to Stone, is Fabulous, 🔥🥰. Everything they did was awe inspiring.

This magic song is all about SURFING 101. Just ask a Surfer!❤
Was a massive follower of ELO in the mid to late 70,s and early 80's. Saw them in concert so many times over that period in the UK.Great Band and still doing it today all be it with a new line up but Jeff Lynne is still the voice and leader of the band
Jeff Lynne is a musical genius. He's the best and he's what makes ELO such an incredible group my favorite British band of the early 1970' to early 1980's.
This group, just great and eclectic!
I made mixed tapes back in the day. I had a cassette player, set by the radio, waited for the song I wanted to record. Then push record and waited to stop it recording before the commercials came on. It was a pain. But it was great. Wouldn't of traded it for anything. Another great Old school tune.... BYE BYE MISS AMERICAN PIE.
"Fire on High," "Boy Blue," "Can't Get It Out Of My Head" are all EPIC ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA tunes to check out! Rock you, you two!! SORRY about your Bengals. As a die-hard 49ers fan, I can relate this year. Tough games in totally different ways.
Welcome aboard, youngsters! After hearing E.L.O. back in 1976, I became a dedicated fan and follower. Seeing E.L.O. live in concert, is a wonderful experience.
"Last Train To London" is an absolute must!!!

ELO was a huge part of the soundtrack of the '70's! They are everywhere!!
Jeff lynne is the GOAT when it comes to producing and writing music. He wrote songs for the biggest bands/musicians in history! He is a genius HANDS DOWN....
you finally got back to ELO - but I wanted to see you react to Turn to Stone but this is good too not as blood pumping though
I'd like to see their reactions to "Fire On High," "Hold On Tight," and "Telephone Line."
Jeff Lynn, Brummie extraordinair.God bless him!!! A creative genius, great performer, producer and arranger. I forget which one of the Beatles said that Elo were the band the Beatles would have become if they'd stayed together. But they meld classical, Pop and rock in such a seemless way. They're a sublime stadium band too.Mr Blue Sky probably their most famous track and is brilliant effort, but Livin thing is my particular favourite. It showcases their unique sound so well.
LOVE ELO!!💃🏻❤️🎻
Total 70's . The vocalist , Jeff , is a legend .
Oh yeah, BTW, Jeff is just too 🔥🔥🔥
The original band members here.. And yes, those are cellos. I saw the violinist play that same blue violin at one of their concerts back in 1977 at the Cow Palace in South San Francisco. One of the best concerts I've ever been to, topped off with a laser light show off and on during the performance..
It's important to understand that when Jeff Lynne split from Roy Wood to form ELO, it was due mainly to what The Beatles were doing in 1967-1968! Lynne was heavily influenced by that sound of a few strings blending with rock and roll ("Strawberry Fields Forever", "I Am The Walrus", "All You Need Is Love", "Hello-Goodbye", etc ..) and simply took it a step further by integrating the sound of classical strings into rock and roll as THE sound of the Electric Light Orchestra! Lynne is a musical genius who doesn't get the accolades he is so richly deservant of! He is every bit as gifted as Lennon and McCartney!
You gotta love a rock band with orchestra in the name. ☮💛🎶
ELO... happy music... so many hits... They combined rock, pop, classical, and opera lol... Great reaction. Thank you. 😊
There were two things in my childhood I grew up on .. Food was one and the other was E.L.O. Just awesome all around.

Its my 61st Birthday and they past their love for the best Music onto me with precoius memories of them together. They fell in love with those Orchestrations and this song had just been released and was on the Top 10 in the 1970s. WOW
Always loved the ELO songs from Xanadu. I know it was a young people movie, but what they contributed to the. Soundtrack was great.
Jeff lyn has over a hundred different instruments in his house and can play them all, his house is also used as a studio he has gold and platinum records all around the place. He has written so many songs for other singers. He's great, thank you. 🇬🇧 🌹

This is such a great song. More Electric Light Orchestra please. 🌺✌️
Jeff Lynne has done lots of great stuff with ELO and the Traveling Wilburys. I enjoy this song too. The pitcicato (I hope I got the spelling right, but it is the plucking of the instrument strings) works so well in the moments when it comes in. All the best from Australia.
