You have to go through a few years of the good old British weather to really get this one, especially back then in the 70s before global warming took hold. When Mr Blue Sky and Mr Sun finally emerged it filled everyone with a positivity like Amber says. You just had to embrace it,get out there and soak it up before Mr Night came along and said time's up for today, boys and girls. I remember this, their most famous song, being out in the spring of 1978 when I was 13. In retrospect they released it a few weeks too early to chime in with the actual weather we were having, but who was to know? A drab, damp January ended with snow, which stuck around for almost the first half of February. Spring eventually tried to poke a little brightness into things but for the most part winter stubbornly refused to relinquish its grip. The school Easter holidays, while a happy, cosy time made all the better with the great music that was coming out week after week, month after month, started in late March with frosty days and nights. It was one of those early Easters, when it's still March and the weather is rarely good. That year's one came with a brief dusting of snow, especially at night. April and early May were very rainy, leading one of my school friends to quip that it was going to be "another pissy summer". However,Mr Blue Sky and Mr Sun did burst on the scene suddenly as Whitsun approached. It turned hot at times between the late end of May and the middle of June, and I found T-shirts and dinky late 70s-style shorts the most comfortable thing to wear by far. It was the only summer in which I got seriously sunburnt as we all lay on the lawns one glorious hit Sunday and I underestimated it staying there with my T-shirt off for too long. I couldn't sleep on my back that night and only tentatively the following night! Lesson learned. I guess the climate in Oklahoma is very warm and humid most of the year round?

As much as I love Jeff Lynne, equal credit for the brilliance of ELO also resides with Richard Tandy. As Jeff's closest friend, Tandy was there from the beginning until the end (may he RIP) and arranged and wrote as a partner, his keyboard contributions laying the foundation of nearly every song. Jeff himself would admit that it was never all him but their partnership that made ELO.

Haaa - Im in Australia - and growing up - I never understood why the Brits always sang songs about sunshine and summer holidays...coming from a land of "sand, sin and sorrow" where summers are brutal and you just wanna hibernate for 5 months..i dfidnt get it. THEN when we married, we went and lived in the UK for 16 months from a Novemeber to March the year after, (back in the 1990's) and one day in summer, after being sun deoprived for months, we were out during summer - and there was not ONE single cloud in the sky. I remebering turning my camera up to the sky and going "click" - and have this odd photo of just plain blue sky - JUST TO PROVE IT WAS POSSIBLE! haaa...my family at home thought it strange. When I first arrived in London, I couldnt understand why there were rows of deck chairs out on Green park with a guy with a money belt and sign "50p for half hour". I said to him, "what sad slapper is gonna PAY to sit in the sun for 30 minutes...????" urgh After 3 months of English winter - I got it!

MustardSeedish, you're close, but not correct. During the incessant rain Jeff had terrible writer's block. It was only after it subsided and the clouds parted, revealing incredible blue skies that his block went away and he was suddenly inspired to write, "Mr. Blue Sky", and many other songs on the double album over the next few days. (By the way, he was in a chalet he'd rented in the Swiss Alps for the purpose of writing the album.)

Toadally agree. Just after lockdown here in UK I bought myself a 1984 Honda Goldwing - a very vast & very silly motorcycle. I dunno why I did that but it made sense at the time 😁 It has a radio cassette. Bringing it 150 miles home the rain finally stopped and the sun came out, glinting on all the ridiculous chrome. As I came over a hill & saw the valley where I live, the radio played Mr Blue Sky. The smile near split my face. Can't hardly remember a moment of such peace n happiness 😁❤

The robot voice is done with a Vocorder, a keyboard instrument that you sing into, it is a different instrument than the vocal bag that Peter Frampton used on his songs, which was a guitar based based effect. Stevie Wonder, Peter Frampton and Roger Troutman (among others) used a Talk Box, not a vocal bag (there's no such thing). This was a small amplified loudspeaker inside a small and almost hermetic enclosure (box) where a tube protruded as only way out for the sound. The input of the talk box was linked to the line level output of any instrument (or any other audio source, like a headphone jack) Due to the fact pressured air vibrations from the loudspeaker could damage the teeth, people who used it had to be cautious with the way they handled the tube in their mouth. And the most proper name could have been "articulating box" since you only have to articulate the words (or any other resonant effect you could do with your mouth) while not emitting a sound with your voice most of the time. Oh, and BTW it's a Vocoder, not Vocorder.

The very ending of Mr. blue sky where the tempo slows is actually the beginning of the first song on this album side which is part of a 4 song suite in which all songs blend together-Mr. Blue sky is the last song of the suite. Standing In the Rain is the first song-so the moods of the songs from rain (depression) to sunny blue skies (joy) is also transformative in sound and lyrics on the album side-a must listen when you get the chance-one of the best album sides from the 70s-the electronic voice at the very end of Mr. blue sky says "please turn me over" to continue playing the album or other side of the record..

This is my fav ELO song. Great combo of orchestra instrument with rock band instruments. They have such a unique sound. Not really hippie era music, but it is late 70s. I never tire of hearing this song. Can’t help but tap my foot and drum my hands with it. With the acoustic music you get lower sounds coming out of the larger instruments. Like a violin is small so it hits the higher notes comparable to a soprano voice, the viola is a little lower like an a lot voice, the cello is even lower sounds like tenor, the bass violin is very low like a basso voice. If that is helpful. In electric instruments you can tune it to whatever range you want but I love acoustic instruments for their richness.

A second vocoded segment at the end of the song was often interpreted by listeners as "Mr. Blue Sky"; it is actually "Please turn me over" as it is the end of side three, and the listener is being instructed to flip the LP over. This was confirmed by Jeff Lynne on 3 October 2012 on The One Show.

The vocal effects about 5:20 on your video is a vocoder. Also, there is a very unique 'instrument' used on this tune. That sound that sounds like a cow-bell, it's a guy hitting a fire extinguisher with a drumstick. As to the 'inspiration' behind Mr. Blue Sky, Lynne said that he was locked away in a Swiss chalet working on the follow-up album to "A New World Record". Apparently it had been very rainy and misty for about two weeks, and then one day the sun broke out from the clouds...and voila...Jeff's inspiration for Mr. Blue Sky! Thanks again for a great video, and for the great sound...love listening loudly on my headphones...all the best to you! P.S. - at the end of the song, when it sounds like the singer is saying "Mr. Blue Sky" again...however, according to Jeff Lynne himself, he actually sings "Please Turn Me Over"...ie., to the next side of the LP. This was a double LP, and Mr. Blue Sky was the last song on side 3. So, turn it over to side 4 and start up with the next ELO tune...Sweet Is The Night. This album, "Out of the Blue" was one of, in not the best selling album ELO put out. PPS....Have you ever listened to ELO's "Roll Over Beethoven"...a rocking tune, that I used to wake my next door neighbor in my college dorm with every morning during my freshman year...lol If Roll Over Beethoven don't wake you up...nothing will!

The string section in an orchestra has 4 main instruments: the violin (smallest & highest in pitch) is played tucked under the chin. Next is the viola which looks and is played like a violin but a little larger and lower in pitch. The cello is significantly larger and lower. It is usually played seated and resting on the floor. Those were cellos being played with a bow in this video. Finally you have a double bass (or stand-up bass) which is the largest and lowest of the string section. It is usually played standing up. You can catch a glimpse of one being plucked in the vid. Hope this helps a little.

Mr. Blue Sky is like a rite of passage, and is one of the most unique and happy songs ever produced. Once you have heard it, you will never forget it. I'm so glad you enjoyed this masterpiece.

Thank you for that presentation. Loved it. ELO's 'Eldorado' is one of my very best favorite albums. Might want that a shot.
