Vocal Arranger Reacts to ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA - “MR. BLUE SKY” (Analysis)

Ойын-сауық

In this video, I react for the first time to ELO performing “Mr. Blue Sky”, which I found to be gloriously happy. I analyse why that might be from a music theory perspective and come to some cool conclusions that I am excited to share with you. I also analyse their amazing performance, explain and demonstrate the vocal and composition techniques. I love this era of music, when things were so soulful and groovy!

Hello, gorgeous! I'm Lolli, your Fairy Voice Mother. I am a composer, arranger, voice teacher, & vocal anatomy nerd specialising in contemporary techniques. I have a degree in vocal performance, and I am studying for a masters degree in voice pedagogy. I sing all the time in styles such as pop, jazz, rock, metal, soul, Hindustani, Carnatic and I am constantly learning and practicing new vocal skills. I just bloody love singing. It's my favourite thing in the whole world, and because I love you, I want you to sing too. I believe everyone can sing, and my mission with this channel is to break down techniques that are so often portrayed as something to be exclusively accessed by people with a special talent. Well. This song came about when the band was trying to write songs for a new album. They were in a cabin and couldn't come up with anything, making them frustrated. Not helping the mood was the gloomy and rainy weather outside. Until one morning the rain had stopped, the sun was shining again and the sky was a clear blue. Inspiration struck and a hit song was born.

Mr. Blue Sky is the fourth part of Concerto For A Rainy Day, a four part suite. It starts with Standing In The Rain which transitions to Big Wheels which transitions to Summer and Lightning and then finishes with Mr. Blue Sky. Best listening experience is to hear the whole Concerto as a whole. Jeff Lynne wrote Out of The Blue which is a double album while staying in a Swiss Chalet for a couple of weeks. Most of the time in inclement weather. Eventually that led to the weather breaking to Blue Skies. So inspiration hits in the strangest ways sometimes. 😅

Roy Wood and Jeff Lynne formed ELO from the ashes of a great sixties band "The Move". ELO was intended to be a very experimental band, combining rock and orchestra. Roy Wood unfortunately left ELO shortly after their first album released. But Jeff Lynne stayed on to take the group to superstardoom. :-) I would suggest listening to "Overture 10538" from ELO's first album to hear the origins of the band's orchestral overtones.

This is part of a piece of Music by Jeff Lynne and Electric Light Orchestra called "Concerto for a Rainy Day." It took up an entire side of the Double Album "Out of the Blue." It is about how he felt during the relentless rain, as he put it, that was happening in Switzerland while writing the Album. This is the last of the four songs, about how he felt when the rain finally ended. It is considered by many to be the Happiest Song in the World.

I actually got to see ELO in McNichols Sports Arena in Colorado in 1978. There was a big UFO in the middle of the stage. The top rose up, and the band was inside. As the top rose, lasers shot out everywhere? It was very cool. A large screen that rose up behind the top, where they did all of these amazing laser light shows? I was maybe 15. You absolutely ROCK, sweetheart.

This song was taken from the "Out Of The Blue" album which was released in 1977 and by 2007 had sold more than 10 million copies.Written and produced by ELO frontman Jeff Lynne. Jeff Lynne wrote the entire album in three and a half weeks after a sudden burst of creativity while hidden away in his rented chalet in the Swiss Alps. It took a further two months to record in Munich. Side three of the original double LP consisted of the symphonic Concerto for a rainy day. In a BBC Radio interview, Lynne talked about writing "Mr. Blue Sky" after locking himself away in a Swiss chalet and attempting to write ELO's follow-up to :A New World Record. It was dark and misty for 2 weeks, and I didn't come up with a thing. Suddenly the sun shone and it was, 'Wow, look at those beautiful Alps.' I wrote Mr. Blue Sky and 13 other songs in the next 2 weeks.

That was one of the most delightful, insightful, articulate, downright enjoyable reaction vids I've ever seen. Thank you, Lolli, for making my day brighter. I was around when this song was released. It is a classic.; a five-minute, mini symphony. Interestingly, I was at a birthday party, oh, about 10 years ago now; a combined 50th and 18th for mother and daughter. The party crowd was thus a mix of old folk and 18 y-os who would have been just unfertilised eggs when MBS was in what we used to call 'the charts'. This song was played. All the youngsters sang happily and loudly along, apparently familiar with all the words. They don't write 'em like that any more.

As a musician of many many years, I always love reactions who are the reactor really does know what's going on and is good at explaining it to a wider audience, while still giving people like me something more substantive to chew on. This song came out when I was in junior high and I associate it with my first girlfriend because she bought the album and we played it all the time and then this song was on the radio constantly. It was such a great summer time song. You mentioned something about your sobriety, so if that is indeed the case then congratulations to you. And, as ChatGPT would conclude things, it is worthwhile to note that not only are you hot as hell, I really love your voice in that lower register.

I'm late to the party so I hope you read this. This is the fourth movement to Concerto of a Rainy Day. It is 18 minutes of music bliss. Jeff Lynne in a interview shared that he was on vacation to write for his new album when it rained for days and days. He had writer's block and in his frustration wrote about the rain; suddenly the skies cleared over the Alps and this song was born.

In my childhood home the back passage was a corridor from the living room to the kitchen. Years of endless amusement ensued culminating when Mum had the decorators in the back passage. I still snigger like a schoolboy when i hear the phrase.

BTW, this song is used to open Guardians of the Galaxy part 2...the orchestral and choral part at the end are used to good effect in it.

Bev Bevan did most of the voice synthesizer work...I was so lucky to see them in person back in that day. I've lost track of how many times I saw them in concert over the many decades (I'm 61). Such perfect performances each and every time. Grateful for the kinds of memories my generation have of real musicians...artists.

One of my go to feel good, feel better songs. I whistle the "operatic" part at the end of the song all the time, sometimes unconsciously, I'll suddenly realize I'm whistling it, whether from old age or just because it's burned into my psyche, I'm glad for it.
